Hello Nikol, great video as always..I am 74 years old and dying my hair is a real problem for me and has been for awhile..my scalp breaks out in a terrible rash no matter what hair dye I use..I want to go gray pretty gray like so many women have now..But my children and even my grandchildren are not in favor of that idea..Perhaps they don't want to be reminded of how old I really am...However I decided to let my hair go gray naturally no more dye.

Thank you for your tips. How I wish I had your hair, it always looks so fantastic! I've always had baby fine hair that has now become thinner, which makes it so hard to style into any way. Curling will literally fall out within an hour, hair spray just weighs it down...so I continue to look for the magic product.

You are fortunate in that your gray hair is very thick. But there are a lot of us out here with gray hair that has thinned considerably. When I went looking for a wig to supplement my head, I was shocked to see that most of the gray styles are short and very aging. Someone needs to tell the wig companies that not all gray-haired ladies are old ladies! Perhaps you can help. It would be great to have options that are shoulder length and curly, with more youthful styling and current cuts in grays. And the grays should not be all silver, either. There are those of us who are rocking salt and pepper!

I went prematurely salt and pepper with dark brown hair and started dying at 27, trying to maintain dark hair. Well that didn’t work, so I dyed medium blond until 62. Fast forward to about a year ago and I went for growing out and cutting out the dye color. What a surprising delight to have beautiful silver white hair under that. I wear a pixie cut, and the color is so much more flattering to my skin tone. I get so many compliments. I love wearing pink, blues and charcoal tops, so stunning to make my white hair a focal point. Yes to purple shampoo. About every 4 washes for me.

I let my hair go gray a few years ago and I love it! My husband actually convinced me to go gray. My hair is long and curly, albeit, now starting to thin. I already use all your tips which keeps my hair healthy. I used to colour my hair blonde once my dark hair became very gray. Hated the constant colouring and the gray roots. So my sister who is a hairstylist coloured my hair gray until it grew out all gray. Really helped in the transition period. I get so many compliments and always get told that I look younger with the gray hair.

I've been highlight and low light free for the last 7 years and love my hair! It's long with layers but I started noticing some yellowing and used a purple shampoo. It seemed to dry out my hair. So after researching further, I learned that apple cider vinegar and water used before shampooing (once a week) worked so well! It is the best detox for my scalp and hair! Leaves it super soft and shiny with bright silver strands!

Janet, I have found that the John Freida Frizz Ease Extra-Strength Serum is a must for frizzy hair. Even if you do not blow dry your hair, when your hair is 80% dry you can run a small amount through your hair. I live in the south and humidity certain times of the year is really bad. I always keep a bottle on hand for those days. The Frizz-Ease can be on Amazon or CVS/Walgreens.

After 5 years of going gray, I never fell in love with it. I wanted to embrace it but I wasn’t as gray as I hoped. Consequently it was just not pretty and I felt drab. I decided I didn’t have to follow the trend and reintroduced color. I kept the gray but added high and low lights. Now it is multi-tonal and much more flattering. I also only wash my hair every 3 - 4 days. Purple shampoo is a must every 3rd or 4th wash. Spot treating with oil is a great recommendation.

When I went fully silver, I was still using my 2 inch Helen of Troy curling iron that I got in beauty school. The problem is even though I use heat protectant it did scorch it. I also noticed that if I stayed out in the sun, it would turn yellow. So I use sunscreen on my hair when I am out for long periods of time. I love my silver hair and never wanna color it again. I decided to stop dyeing my hair seven years ago. I had no idea that my hair was mostly white. For about the first three years I used the purple shampoo, primarily because that's what I saw recommended. However, I didn't see any difference in the colour so I stopped using it. I suppose my hair is just naturally pure white with never an issue of the yellowing people seem to complain about. I honestly don't know why I have never had that problem. Perhaps it's related to texture or hereditary tendencies. Either way, I suspect that there is clearly a segment of gray-haired people who never have an issue with brassy or yellow hair.

I have to use Rogaine, the 5% version. I went almost totally bald on top when I turned 60. I tried for three years to just use supplements, and I got some of it back, but then I had stress and it fell out again. Actually, I waited too long to start the Rogaine, because a lot of my hair follicles died. However, Rogaine helped a lot - I'm not bald anymore. I buy the off brands; I like Kirkland and the Equate Walmart house brand is good, too. About $12/month.

I found my first gray hair at age 21, started permanent dye at age 30 and stopped at age 47 to embrace my totally silver hair. Three things that helped the transition: I frequently got the dyed ends cut a couple of inches at a time, I still kept dying my brown hair but went one shade lighter every time so that the last box that I bought was platinum blonde and lastly, I wore a headband when I went out that was very thin but had little teeth on it so it blended together, because my biggest dread was the dark/ light skunk line. Most of my friends didn’t even notice the “transition” part!🙌🏻

You probably have a video that addresses my question which is - what is your technique for your brush curlers & which ones do you use or prefer. I bought some cheap ones but they get really tangled in my hair. Also, if I put them in when my hair is wet should I not be using a blow dryer to dry? @@spirituallysafekeratin treatments can be damaging depending on your hair's porosity. A bond repair shampoo/conditioner like Amika the Kure is a safer alternative that gives amazing results. Also, Sebastian Cellophane in the clear color is another amazing product that will have your hair sooooo shiny and smooth. For best results you'll want to invest in a hooded or cap dryer so that the heat can help the product to penetrate more. For extra moisture, apply a really good, light weight hair oil the evening before you wash your hair. Message it into your scalp for about 5 minutes before running it through your hair and especially on the ends. Apply a plastic cap and a scarf/bonnet to help the oil saturate the strands even more and to keep your pillow case clean.. that way you can sleep on it overnight. But even if you can only do that for a couple of hours before washing your hair, it will make a huge difference. If the oil treatment seems to weigh your hair down,, even after washing it out, try rinsing the hair with apple cider vinegar before washing with shampoo. Hope this was helpful 🌸🌸

Thank you very much for your time! I will skip the keratin treatment then. I will remember your ACV tip since last time I coated my hair in oil and washed it afterwards very well (as I thought), it was still a wad of grease and I got odd looks at work. My hair is not too bad in the frizz department really, all dye has been out a while now. I am several shades of grey. No-one ever commented on my hair before but since going natural, I have never had so many compliments from randoms in the street, one time three in an hour, no exaggeration :) What I find good is the leave in Aveda Cherry Almond conditioner. I use jojoba shampoo and conditioner too, British company called Faith in Nature which uses water from the beautiful Lake District. Years ago I read a book by Elvis Presley's hairdresser and he said the best thing to put on the hair is jojoba - I never forgot that and it was difficult to find products with it in for many years. I am not sure if I can get the products you mention in UK, never heard of them but thank you, will have a look. @@deredd

@@spirituallysafe you're very welcome. And yes, Aveda products and jojoba oil are both excellent so it sounds like you're on the right track. Hopefully the ACV will help. Have a great day...or evening in UK 🇬🇧

Really good info. I am on my fourth year of total grey. I love it. I do use too much heat but my hair is super straight and doesn't hold curl.

I went into the grey movement after Covid did a huge number on me. I lost almost 70% of my hair. It has grown back but I became allergic to color. I had grays since I was 16 but I had never seen them at my age. I finally gave up and got the Dyson. My new hair was coming with curls and it was really hard to manage. I didn't want the heat either so the Dyson has been my savior.

Last week the stylist gave me highlights to blend in with my grays, instead of covering them with all-over color. This way I get to keep my grays but give it some fun! 🤩 ❤ I like it alot!

Dear Nikol, Thank you for a brilliant video. I have long hair and i get my hair coloured and cut every 4 weeks. I only wash my hair once a fortnight. I use organic coconut oil on my hair. I do not dry my hair with any heat, I let it dry naturally. Depending on how I want to wear my hair I will use my straighteners or my rotating brush, whichever, I use i do not over do it. My hair is very thick and can be quite unruly, so needs a bit of taming. Love Sue xx

I have recently tried Goldie Locks brand leave in conditioner and signature serem on my silver/white natural hair. I ❤ it! Smells divine, smooths and moisturizes, without weighing hair down at all. This is GREAT for straight, fine, hair that stays bouncy and light for days. I can only shampoo every 4-5 days as well. These products are game changer. 🤩

@@sandyk13599 OK, gotta use a weekly purple shampoo, (shampoo#1), then I use a scalp care shampoo(2nd shampoo). Skip conditioner in shower, or only on ends for longer hair. Then use Goldie Locks leave in spray conditioner. It’s a really fine mist, easy to apply. Work in, then either air or blow dry. Next day I’m still fine. 2nd day (as needed thru day 4-5), I use Amika “perk up” dry shampoo on roots and work in. Brings bounce right back. Then a squirt or two of Goldie Locks signature serem to add shine, and smells beautiful. That’s how I do it.

I have received more compliments on my hair since I went gray/silver then I ever got before when I colored it. I always tell women who ask me to go ahead and give it a try if they don't like they can always color it again but they might be surprised and love the end result. But if you do you might have to adjust your make up color choices.

And clothing colors. I've seen women who were Autumns who didn't adjust their clothing colors and they thought they looked terrible, but they wore not only the same colors, but combined them in the same way as when they had rich brown or red hair, and it doesn't work. For example, a gray-haired Autumn can probably still wear russet, but not with dark camel. They need to combine the russet with cooler pieces to cut the warmth. They need to wear the dark camel with cooler pieces, and not with other warm colors. I'm a graying Bright Spring; I need to combine the warmest, brightest colors with pieces that aren't warm or bright, like denim blue or stone or off-white. As I get grayer, I'll be using more light gray to temper the warmer tones. I have found that warm pink is a good color for me all my life, and I've seen it work wonders on gray-haired women. It'll be a staple for me.

Great video, I embraced going white in my 40s. Was salt and pepper in my 30s then hit the dyes, slowly getting blonder and then had a short cut to allow it easier to transfer. I was lucky to go white, and have thick hair. In the last year I have been introduced to purple shampoo in my late 50s. Years before my hair changed my hairdresser recommended only washing my hair twice a week to allow the natural oils to enhance my hair. A tip I have always used.

The thing that I have done that has been transformative is to use a lot of good-quality oil (like pretty much any oil that could be used on the face) on all my hair and to leave it on for a while (minimum an hour, preferably overnight) before washing. If I do that, it doesn't matter how often I wash. I don't use heat on my hair though. I do have a purple shampoo, but it seems hard on my hair and so I only use it occasionally when it seems my hair really needs it. And I do try to use gentle shampoo and conditioning products, without fragrance.

Your hair is so beautiful. I'm a blonde from birth. My hair was almost white for the first years of my life and I'm begining to get some gray in the front. I never use blow dryers, curling irons, colors, hair spray, etc.... I wash my hair every other day or third day with Dr Bronners Castiel Soap. It hangs to my knees and I've cut 4-6 inches off of the end twice in the last year. I use cocnut oil to get rid of the frizzies. You have great advice and your hair looks amazing. Thank you for sharing.

This is an important video. When I was a CHILD probably into my 20s I washed my hair everyday (maybe not on weekends depending on where I was etc) but this was because during those years I was ACTIVE indoors/outdoors on the go out in nature, in the city (Houston). There is a LOT of atmosphere in Houston & surrounding areas. Plus products were involved. Now, in a different big city but not around bus & vehicle exhaust downtown (plus that exhaustthing is differentnow), different level/type of activity indoors/outdoors, different diet, I work from home - I definitely do not shampoo my hair everyday. Also, brushing helps stretch out the need to often. Thank you very much for this video. 💝

I am 3 years in to embracing my silver hair. I get SO many compliments on it which is still shocking to me! I am a HUGE fan of WEN. Despite the rumors out there of all the untruths about it making one’s hair fall out, etc. I have been using it since it’s inception, and now that I’m silver, I use the Wen Indigo (purple cleansing conditioner.). I mix it with the lavender one for thickening. I only use it 2x a week as silver hair can tend to be dry, especially living in the winter climate that I do. Regular shampoo is so drying and strips hair of too much oil for me personally. I occasionally use the Wen hair oil as well. Your hair is beautiful and healthy looking too! I have a lot of hair , but it is fine and straight. I am so happy that the chemical dyes, bleach, and perms of years ago are no longer for me! I agree that a good cut is crucial. I too wear a one length angled Bob. Thank you for the tips!

I had a high risk pregnancy/delivery in my 20's and I got the Morticia gray stripe as a result, so been coloring for years. My mom was like Heloise, who sported her gray looks early and she had unruly hair. It just never was manageable, so I have opted to follow my other kin that dyed until they died, lol.

I have a question Nicol. Might sound weird 😂When you started your grey hair journey, did your grey change over time. Perhaps from darker to lighter? I'm puzzled as my grey always looked so white when I tinted my hair all those years, but now after almost 2 years of no tinting, my grey looks darker. Does it change as it grows?
@athena3865

I wore my hairstyle like yours for decades since my late twenties. Allowed the grey to come in at 58 and grew it past my shoulders, a length I never could do when I was coloring due to the damage from the dye and cutting the length every six weeks. The length actually looks younger than the shorter version.
