1. 00:00 mastering own song (actually, i learned so much about mixing mastering my own songs, i wouldn't want to miss it, but also learned a lot from GOOD mastering engineers mastering my music) 2. 05:12 Level Match! (don't fool yourself) 3. 06:55 don't try to fix a bad mix (it's possible though) 4. 10:18 people use too much shit, keep it simple (EQ + Limiter should be enough for most masters, if the mixes are good...) 5. 14:39 Listen more, use tools for things that the song needs! (train your ears) 6/7. (double mistake =D) 17:24 Using too many references 8. 20:50 mastering/mixing with your eyes (close your eyes for levelmatched comparisons, though use analyzers for occasional referencing) 9. 23:28 expecting too much/too little from mastering (though with Stem Mastering you can do pretty much anything, it feels more like mixing though) 10. 25:55 Sending squashed test masters/mixes to clients (though clients always want it loud from the first mix you send them, it always takes work educating clients about this...)

Some of us can't afford to pay someone for mastering, regardless of how "affordable" it is, especially when we're talking about a large number of songs. But because I have to do my own mastering, I rarely do anything but bring the level up. So there is no "fixing" it in mastering -- the mix is either right or it's not.

@Sarahtonin + your right. I mentioned with the advent of the computer and MIDI, think Kashif and David Frank , you can mix and master your own music .You don't need a mix or mastering engineer. Mixbus tv (David) didn't like my statement!

It's all ear training for me. The Mastering I now do is all part of the learning curve, and has it's roots in good sources. But since my mixes started improving, I realised how heavy handed I'd been with earlier mastering, and how much better I could hear small increments. So many lessons that you think you've understood, until one day you get a boom moment, and finally do. Great vid

Great video David! Again, you're 100% right! I agree on everything and I'm so glad you're here to tell some people that there is no such thing as magic! It takes skills more than gear or plugins and, above all, it takes years of field experience not just pretending you're a professional because you're on KZbin. As soon as I feel like my mix is close I send it to a buddy of mine but I also Master it on my own and when he gives me his master back I compare it to what I did. At first I wasn't even close, you're totally right it's very hard to do, it's been about 5 years and I can finally say that I could probably Master my own stuff now but it literally took me this long just to think I know what I'm doing as far as being a mixing and mastering engineer. I'm not going to switch over to totally mastering myself I'm going to keep doing it the way I've been doing it so I can compare it to what other people do, but there is definitely something to be said about a fresh perspective and there is also something to be said for the fact that if you have a vision there's sometimes and some things that other people just can't get

One of the things that I leave for mastering is high end. I like my mixes to be a little bit dark. In my experience if a mix is balanced between all the elements in each range (sub,low-mid, mid, hi-mid, hi) Then you will get great results with any good mastering engineer even if one of those ranges is too much.

Amazing video David! We appreciate this priceless input much. When I started doing (and learning) production to record my own music for the industrial metal band back in 2009, I did everything: recording my guitars, drums, vocals, mixing and mastering. Terrible mistake it was indeed. Later on, I had to give my music to a friend that had a studio so he could lend an ear on the material and do his work from his perspective. It's amazing how two people can do much more than one. As my grandpa used to say "A donkey and a human are smarter than a human alone".

I'd also say overusing the limiter/compressor at the point you loose all the punch from the drums. But yeah, agree with you! I basically have a glue compressor doing about 2/3db of GR, an EQ doing a little bit, a clipper to shave off a little bit of the peaks and sometimes a saturator; and everything is doing very little, I'd rather have my mix sound the best.

BUT, person who do this service professionaly for years and for many different clients - will always do it better, because it is lifetime skill, and when you do it for clients you always have many different situations and problems to improve and it is gold practical knowledge.

You’re *literally* the only person I trust with audio advice. Question: I’ve been hearing that it’s almost never good to have a mixbus or mastering compressor or limiter with release less than 50ms. The reason is that, if the music has low frequency info at around 20hz (like rap or electronic), a release faster than 50ms will likely introduce distortion. I know there’s no hard rules, it’s all about the sound... But would you generally agree with this? Thank you 🙏
@mixbustv
@mixbustv 3 жыл бұрын
Edit: common settings release on a 2bus is fairly fast, but the below .5 tend to indeed create distortion, not necessarily for the reason mentioned above, in fact sometimes faster release give a kind of grit that we like on certain material (mostly rock and alike), but just because of the nature of the processing.
@HollerAtcherBoi
@HollerAtcherBoi 3 жыл бұрын
@@mixbustv Wait... Doesn’t SSL G bus release down to 0.1, and API 2500 down to .05? If you set to 0.5 then the release is about half way, almost pointing straight up, depending on the unit.

So I also mix my own songs and this video really opened my eyes about making you mix freaking awesome and just make it "louder" in the end. I just want to say THANK YOU for sharing such valuable insight. I’m glad that you don’t try to share formulas but rather, you’ve given refined explanations helping us to understand the abstract principles behind the art of mixing and mastering. All paintings are on a canvas. All paintings use paint. But it’s the artist that brings the work to life and that is what has impact on the one appreciating the art. Life is so interesting and deep. Have you ever wondered about the mastering engineer that refined the universe in which we reside and our senses take pleasure (or not depending on context and circumstances) in perceiving?

7:47 I understand what you mean by not trying to fix a bad mix in mastering, and I have never and will never try to. But I'm not always 100% happy with my mixes, even when I know they are finished. I'm usually at least 80% happy with it, but not always 100%. I believe there are some things that, sonically, only mastering can do. It's just a matter of knowing and feeling what those things are. I think there is a certain point where you just have to let the mastering process do its job.
