I think this 4K60fps talk needs to go in the bin. Most ps5 players play in performance mode and many don't care about ps5 pro improvements. 4K is not that hot. Higher frames are more popular.

As long as games aren't delivering consistently on the highest of quality, I'll never pay $70 for a game. I stopped paying $60, even. Hell, I take every chance I get to play the game for free before paying anything for it, because the gaming industry has become so filled with garbage that they don't deserve the trust that paying money for their releases demands, in my opinion.

I know there's nuance, but not having platform and model exclusives is a gooood thing. There was no need for this "generation". Fidelity and 60fps (when most games don't even use it) is not worth throwing away a perfectly good console for an upgrade. And the few games that did release exclusively for Series X and Ps5 do more to frustrate people that know it would run fine on their old console, than it does to convince them they need a new one. The "generation" failed because it's not a new generation at all. It's just another pro version with a new look and price tag.

Welcome to the concept of “diminishing returns.” Despite the MASSIVE LEAPS technology has been making, we’ve been at a level of “satisfactory visual fidelity” for like 2-3 generations now. Which is kinda WHY-as much as people talk CRAP about Nintendo for making their console hardware a generation or two BEHIND what the PRESENT “standard” is-I can’t help but feel like Nintendo is the ONLY ONE that really “gets it.” MOST PEOPLE HONESTLY either don’t care or can’t see a massive visual difference between like a Switch game and a PS5 game (the mere fact that games like Vampire Survivors and Minecraft BLEW UP IN POPULARITY support this).

For the cross gen issue, it was less about chip shortages and more about the fact that next gen console developers (mostly Sony and Microsoft) didn't have sufficient anti-scalper measures in place at the start of the generation. No developer, 1st or 3rd party, would want to spend all those resources on making a PS5 exclusive game when they know that over 70% of the PS5s ever sold at the time were sitting unused in some sociopathic chud's warehouse because most people weren't willing to shell out $2000+ dollars on a $500 next gen console so long as those developers are making cross-gen titles that they can spend that money on instead.

At launch they should just have the consoles sold through the company ( Sony, Microsoft) 1 per household and you need to have so many achievements/trophies and game time to purchase. Then once that's through open it up to everyone else.

Game Devs MUST Unionize! without bargaining power, we'll be stuck with what plays well in a board room, not for the industry itself. remember, Execs and investors can extract cash from a bankrupted company just as well as a thriving one, and the former is easier for them in some cases. _they don't care if the company, or the whole industry tanks_ b/c they know how to make money off the tanking.

After Cyberpunk 2077, I'll NEVER buy another game day one. With the unfinished state 90% of games are released in, why should the consumer pay to play the very worst build of the game on release? It can ruin the whole experience, so why take the gamble? Better to wait for the Devs to optimise it and then pick it up at half price 12-18 months down the line. If everyone else's backlog is anything like mine, it's not as though you're ever stuck for anything to play. I also dip into different subscriptions (PS+, Ubisoft+ or Game Pass) based on what I want to play. Like I paid £15 for a month of Ubisoft+, and it let me play through the main stories on Avatar, Mirage and Outlaws over a month then I just don't renew. It works pretty well and means I can get a good crack at these games for a fraction of what it would cost me to buy them all

As for Microsoft buying Activision, and the raw deal that Sony gets 10 years blah blah, am I the only one thinking that it’s hypocritical? Sony has so many first party exclusives and dedicated developers who had/would work for multiple Platforms if they could (square Enix, naughty dog, sucker punch, insomniac, Geurrila Games, Bend, … 17 FIRST PARTY STUDIOS ALONE), the fact that Microsoft was willing to purchase a game studio that happens to make a very popular games, only for Sony to cry foul and that it is anticompetitive…. Ironically enough, the price point of $70 is what drove me away from attempting to buy Dragon Age: The Veilguard at launch. After feeling disappointed by the supposed $30 value of Shattered Space, I really can't justify buying products at full price knowing that they might not even meet expectations or longevity standards.

Cross generation games are not a problem, that has existed for 50 years, the problem is that the consoles don't have an identity of their own, and the things that make them distinctive do it for the worst, from the predatory monetizing, to the expensive games, to the limited exclusivities, to anemic hardware, and the loss of exclusives, there's no reason to own a console anymore, PC is the king of this generation.

@@chovymasters7577 many games from the SNES era had their NES counterpart. TMNT Tournament Fighters come to mind, same happened with Playstation/Saturn games on the SNES and Genesis (ie SF Alpha 2). I agree that this generation got out of hand, but it has happened for sure. The reasons might vary, I'm inclined to believe that studios still see value in keeping last generation consoles alive, but this happens only on sony's side, which means they appreciate the 100M+ user base, who wouldn't?

There's a reason that RDR2 won't get a remaster. Two reasons, though one is BS, because Take Two and Rockstar just want to keep supporting the GTA Online cash cow. They point at the GTA Definative Edition Trilogy as a reason why they aren't doing remasters, even though that was massively botched by giving it to a studio who just had done Mobile ports of their games before and then cut their publishing timeline by six months so that Take Two could have a game to put out for an earnings call. Rockstar ended up cancelling a planned remaster of GTA 4 because of that excuse (mostly to keep feeding GTA 5 and add more people to the GTA 6 teams, imho.) Also, RDR2 Online didn't become the Cash Cow that GTA Online did, which is why they've pretty much completely abandoned that part of the game. Remember, the CEO of Take Two, Strauss Zelnick, said that he thinks that GTA Online is "Undermonetized." It's a game that came out two generations ago that is still a Top Ten Game that makes over a Billion dollars a year, but it's "Undermonetized." Strauss, I don't care how much you exercise, when you die, none of your billions will come with you, you have so much money at this point, every person who's related to you will never have to work, this is just the usual greed for greed's sake.

Having grown up through the 80’s and 90’s video game eras, the fact that the $30-50 price point had been relatively constant for nearly 2 decades was unsustainable: the prices should have increased with inflation, but they did not. I know a lot of millennials and gen z rented their games and didn’t actually drop quid to purchase games (their parents did), games gave a lot less for similar pricing. A triple A game was Zelda or link and that was $49; marketing and sales needed to either increase the sale price earlier, or curb expectations. It is why we have bloat/grind (to falsely inflate the “value” to “justify” price increase), and why making a AAA game is so risky - too much money involved for it to fail, so play it safe or better yet, rehash a known IP.

Massive global inflation means people haven't had the cash to splash on fairly expensive newer consoles for a good portion of this generation. I only recently upgraded and have appreciated being able to play so many things on my trusty old xbone, but now I have the upgrade I'm looking around for something new that will really show off it's power and there isn't much. The money problem also means that while factoring in inflation, games havent TECHNICALLY increased in price that much, most peoples income have NOT increased with parity so 70 dollarpounds is a LOT of money for a game and so much produced recently is just "safe", not BAD (despite what some might say) but not worth the massive price. I reckon we will see things like Star Wars Outlaws sell better in sales.

Game budgets over $200m with 5-8 years of development when the system's life cycle is nearing out. Completely agree for Sony they should've kept their games PS5 exclusive. Most of the issues mentioned here can be boiled up into a larger conversation which is in 2024 the AAA game model is unsustainable. Everything cost too much and the companies need so much money to make a profit on these things You're getting broken games on launch You're getting incomplete games you're getting games that feel empty because they need to charge you more money to buy the rest of it via live service microtransactions. And games are more expensive than ever and they're trying to get this money recouped by people who are undergoing a bigger economic crisis than the Great depression, which is causing business decisions that lead the studio shutting down. The public doesn't have enough money to pay to recoup you spending $400 million making one game. The market is headed towards a crash and a big one. And I believe the near future for gaming is going to be from independent publishers. If I were a developer at a AAA studio I would be looking for a few co-workers who want to form a small team to create a new independent. Because I think very soon the only profitable games are going to be very very unique games made by independent publishers on small budgets

I must politely disagree about the Series S by pointing out the lack of games specifically for this generation, and the need to own a super fancy TV to notice the (minor?) difference between the systems. PC games play at different resolutions and speeds, why can't the same be done for X-Box? I went from a PS4 Pro to my Series S, and I play it every day. My PS4 Pro sounded like an airplane engine, and my Series S is quiet and looks and plays better than my PS4 Pro did. Couple that with Gamepass and I'm extremely pleased.

The BIGGEST mistake of the PS5 generation so far, is that even BEFORE the PS5 was released, it was teased BY Mark Cerny that the PS5 would have FULL backwards compatibility, and then just before release, Sony did a MASSIVE 180 and benched that feature to put all their R&D into the implementation of the SSD, and THEN Jim Ryan made that atrocious statement when he said 'oh who wants to play an old game on a next gen console'. Not to mention also the announcement recently of the PS5 Pro which gives us NOTHING for the amount they are charging. No disc drive, no stand, STILL NO FULL backwards compatibility, and they are charging us over $1000 (in Australia at least) Come off it.

Sony doesn’t care about “generations” otherwise they would do more with the IP they have. All the bangers from the PSone up to the PS3 are apart of Sonys generation as a whole as well. These generational systems/games need to be able to coexist along side one another in a readily accessible state. The new nostalgia console, cool in design, cash grab more than anything. Sony is going to be releasing whatever they think will make them that concord money back. I get it, but we’re going to get unnecessary remasters until Sony has re-secured their bag.

I remember when digital games foe console started to appear the theory was they would be cheaper than discs because of ni cut for retailers, no transportation, no physical product to build. Which literally never happened. Those saving have not been past to the consumer and with digital the consumer then can't recoup some capital by trading in/selling on their copy of a game. Greed is out of the realms of acceptable levels now.

There are plenty of games this generation, but none of them really made purchasing a PS5 worthwhile for me. The type of single-player experiences I enjoy felt stagnant in terms of PS5 exclusives and I just picked everything else up on PC where possible. I just haven't used my PS5 in comparison to the 1000's of hours I got from my PS4 Pro.

Current console and Pc side is borked, 'insert new game name here' is running on ps5/xbox at 4k!!, what framerate? ahem '30fps'... Or 150fps on PC but completely bugged to hell. PS5 pro.. much the same as the gpu market is laughable.. minimal performance increase for a measly £700, £989 in the UK for the 30th anniversary bundle.. Disk drive, nah that's extra.. You want backwards compatibility that's built in, well you need to give us more money to use it.. Cheers sony, do you remember the DDOS attacks from removing linux compatibility? Ray tracing.. really needs to get to jeff along with DLSS and FSR for at least a few hardware generations.. 'insert really expensive gpu' plays 'insert game @ 144fps' once we've used upscaling bs, added fake frames and ruined Image quality because the cards aren't actually much faster than 10 series NVidia.. we've just tripled the prices and added tensor/rt cores.. which are technically not designed for gaming as 'we aka NVidia is an 'isn't a gaming company, we're an AI powerhouse now'.. Don't get me wrong, path tracing and rtx remix'd games are impressive, but I'm sorry when gpu prices for 'gaming' are over 2k.. its getting a bit daft to play a £50 game. 2k for Cyberpunk, Crysis Series Remastered, 3dmark?? I love my current rig, 5600x/3060ti.. but I'll stick with native/SSR/GI/HBAO... Apologies..

The Sony security breaches allowed hackers into my PSN account of over 10 years and after enabling all possible security measures and even getting the better business bureau involved, Sony said they can't help me and told me I'm screwed. This is after showing them how my account hasn't moved for years and I have the reciepts of purchases. So goodbye to thousands of dollars in digital purchases and practically bricking my new ps5 console. So only getting physical copies of playstation exclusives (which they aren't cranking out, only the last of us over and over again and now the horizon series) and getting the rest on PC or ANYWHERE else.

Only investors and share holders making slightly more powerful version of aging architecture and parts imagine that tech is being _held back._ The PS5 doesn’t look as slick as it should due to parts makers/investors who don’t pull their weight in terms of R&D to optimize and make their bits more efficient. None of these are Apple’s problem and none are Nintendo’s problem. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are actually doing justice to their players bases by turning deaf ears to share holders. The PS5 is fugly, that is the fault of the parts makers and the investors. Shareholders hold tech back. Edit: Investors are worthless from food to medicine to entertainment. Investors (and the executive who answers to them) are to be shed from society.

I think you missed the mark with the $70 price point. It's not length that we're looking for. For $70, a game should be DONE. We shouldn't need 6 months of patches to make the game work correctly. The game should be released in a finished state, and without cutting out 60% of it to sell it to us for extra later. If the developers "DLC" was a part of their original vision of the game, it should be a part of the main game.

I think we need to go back to the old days when when a game was released, it was "done." Yes, old games had bugs and glitches, but nothing on today's scale. Day one should be a fully complete game. Especially on console where the hardware they are developing for is fixed.

The studio has the choice: - either release a cross-gen game and get most of the interested next-gen owners plus all interested last-gen owners, - or release a next-gen exclusive game which is bought by all interested next-gen owners but none of the last-gen owners. The rest is accounting. I don't see a problem in keeping the customer longer entertained by life service games. If it gets boring, they still can play something else - so, more playtime for less money. And even if a LS game gets its support cut or even discontinued, usually the player had more playtime then from most modern single player games. Now that you mentioned it, Fable at least is NO reason to buy a PS5.

The HD era has made games very expensive. Big companies can't innovate, they are forced to play it safe. Unpopular opinion: AI can make costs cheaper, it can be the solution for the industry

It could make development cheaper (for now) but those savings wouldn't be passed to the consumer. Nor are we at a point where you can get a compelling game from AI. I have no doubt that it's coming over the next ten years (or less), but I don't believe it will make anything better for us.

I started off in the 80's as a Nintendo guy. Had the NES & SNES. It was the claw controller of the N64 that forced me to change to Playstation. I had a PS1. I have a PS2, PS3 & PS4. It's because of Sony's outright greed and laziness that I my last console will be the PS4. I'm done buying their games and consoles. I will never buy an XBox. Never had an interest in any of their games. I won't ever buy a Switch or Switch 2 because Nintendo has gone out of their way to be user unfriendly to gamers like me who have oversized hands (the claw controller for the N64 literally sliced my knuckles when I tried it out at a Toys R Us in the mid 90's). The joycons are entirely too tiny for me.

2:18 I dont think the developers are being held back by the consoles, as in the exemple of the CALL OF DUTY, it has been out on smartphones and when I went to check it I was bombarded with a lot of microtransactions, so the point is that the "biggest shooter game of every year" is on CPUS that wasn't made for running those games, and yet they are working just fine with less graphics ALMOST AS IF GRAPHICS DOSN'T TRANSLATE TO FUN GAMEPLAY (btw, I dont play COD, they aren't fun for me since the MW4)

First, they are acting like you can't buy a disk drive for the PS5 Pro and slim, all while Xbox has multiple consoles with 0 option for a disk drive. The other thing, both Xbox and PS have great sales on the their digital stores, so being worried about being stuck with their prices isn't that big of a deal. There is still the option to buy digital codes from other retailers. The levels they go to make things sound so much worse than they are is a bit over the top.

As someone who never bought the PS5 or Slim when they launched, I feel like I am just one slice of the target audience that Sony is going after. I want to play the exclusives, but I just couldn't get use to the design. FYI, I do own the X Fridge Series X mainly because my entire catalog of games is on the Xbox ecosystem, and I have been with them since the 360 era. At first, I didn't agree with the price of the PS5 Pro, then I took a step back to realize that people spend thousands just to get incremental upgrades on their phones every year or two. For my part, I look forward to not only finally having the capability to play Sony exclusive games but also to know I will play them at their absolute best and most optimized version. For my PC master race folks out there, yes, you have more graphics and performance settings, but there are times when I watch videos or initial reviews of Sony games on PC, and they look like straight potatoes at launch and for several months after.

The difference is mobile devices become obsolete faster than consoles do. Using the phone argument doesn't work because consoles have more longevity so you don't need to rush out and buy a 700 dollar console.

There's simply nothing in the current gen to really set it apart. And it's not just graphics, it's the games themselves. If you look at a game that was available on PS3 and PS4 or 360 and One, there was a difference. They felt smoother, they ran better, gameplay was more crisp and responsive. If you played them back to back, you saw the improvements immediately. Really, the only possible thing they could have done to make them really stand out is backwards compatibility, and both have failed miserably at that. The PS5 can only do PS4 games, and Series is essentially non-functional for the vast majority of games. Sorry not sorry, but if I can't just put in my disc and play without connecting to the internet, then you don't have backwards compatibility.

Its 100% the price hike. Most games are not worth the cost, and so many are releasing broken, or even unfinished. Consumers are tired of beinf ripped off. Combine that with the tech improvements being minimal compared to previous gen, and you get a failing industry

You also should do more research. The reason why games are cross gen is because 50% of users are still on PS4, not feeling the need to upgrade and if they do, they're moving over to PC. Since games are costing 100s of millions of dollars they can't afford to cut out last gen since that's potentially a 50% customer base for them to generate revenue. As a business decision it's a bad idea for big AAA titles to not do cross gen since it's still a big market to generate sales for game publishers and developers.

The 4k 60 thing everyone obsesses about, most people don't even notice. And it's the main thing people justify a whole new generation with. The jump from PS1 to PS2, then to 3 - it was huge. Now it's people saying it's 4k 60 it's huge!! And it's really not. The casual can't even tell the difference. And as for this "4k 60 looks so much better" PS5 pro argument, mostly they are showing off comparison videos of PS4 games to claim how good they look compared PS5 standard

Sony has a real sore spot for the PlayStation three generation of games, which conveniently for Sony all of the most requested remasters resides in. So that’s their excuse, that’s their *OUT* of ever having to properly commit to restoring their old PS3 catalog of highly requested remastered titles. For Sony they’ve already rereleased enough PS3 games to make it look like they’re not cutting that Console Generation off completely but that was only within the first few years of the PS4’s Console Generation’s Lifecycle & since then it’s been completely cut off with no recourse whatsoever. Unless a game was made by a Third Party Studio that was already committed to Flipping the Bill for Development Costs & all Sony had to do was release it on their Consoles than the PlayStation 3 era was treated as the Console version of the technical Dark Ages where everything from the past all the way up to the start of the PS4 generation was treated like it didn’t exist.
