I always thought that it was interesting how the horse armour thing played out in the end. It was so universally hated and mocked and still it made so much money that it caused its own trend. It sadly also feels like it also set an example for big gaming companies to sometimes to just ignore the player base and it can pay out massively.

The psychology of it is super interesting. But the economics is weird too. Like the value of dlc is derived from the original value set by the developers. Because supply and demand doesn't come into it's value. As it's unlimited supply. So what makes them more or less valuable is it's rarity which comes from the price the developers set. Which is insane. If it's cheaper more people can afford but less will want it because it will be common. If it's more expensive less people can afford it. So more will want it. So it's this entirely rigged system where it's value doesn't actually come from the item itself. Or how many are available. It's comes from it's rarity which is set by the price they decide. They literally go "This is the one everyone will want. This is the one everyone will want and can't get, this is the one most people will want and can't get. This is the one some people will want and can't get, this is the one everyone will have and not care about" They are literally printing money

They're not ignoring the player base if the player base buys whatever they're selling. It'd be a whole different story if no one bought it. They're a business, their first priority is to make money. Good ol' capitalism, friends. "The answer to all of your questions is money."- Don Ohlmeyer

@@JM1993951it's more like they just need a fraction of the player base to buy it for it to be profitable. It probably cost them pennies to develop skins in comparison to developing the game since it is just one aspect of said game. Then they can charge like a tenth of the price of a game at best. All they need to make sure is that they can bring in more money than it cost to make and it becomes a money printer since the assets are digital.

He somehow managed to turn those brief instances into whole careers, and when you look into the recent dealings of how his empire is crumbling around him from the bribes to the secret audio tapings being released, its crazy how much he did to get away with it and yet believed his own hype so much he tried suing Regular Show for having his likeness in an episode.

Around 6 years ago I worked in a small retail store at the mall and at one point we got in Blu Ray players as merch. It kinda shocked me because I hadnt seen a standard Blu Ray player in years because either everyone I knew used their game console, computer, or just watched stuff digitally. So seeing a standalone player was odd. The absolute most crazy part was the price though...it was $200. All I could think of is, who the f is paying $200 for a Blu Ray player especially nowadays when there are a bunch of better way to watch it, and most people are going digital anyway if they dont have a console. And no, it wasnt some premium player either.

There's a reason no one got credit for working on the old games, Nintendo famously refused to use real developer names fairly often even up until the 90s. The reason why the companies did that, was to prevent talent sniping. Making games back then required a niche skill for programming that very few had at the time, so there weren't very many people capable of making actual games, let alone good ones that worked. So they had to keep the identity of their workers private, to prevent other companies from finding out who they were, and offering better wages and positions to snipe talent away.

A big reason why it is still fresh for people when Konami comes up is because they barely did anything in video games since MGSV came out, so there basically are no newer news to replace that last drama with. As an example, take Bethesdagames. What was the first thing most gamers thought of last year when Bethesda games came up? Skyrim rereleases and the Fallout 76 fiasko. Now most will think of starfield first, simple because it's the current big thing about them.

Technically, Nintendo was the first company to do DLC, back in the 90s. It was only available in Japan, and required an add-on to the SNES. There were even a few digital games exclusively available via it. Sega also got in on it with the Dreamcast. Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1 & 2 had a LOT of DLC missions, and many of those missions included exclusive drops. PSO wasn't the only Dreamcast game with DLC, but it is the one I most distinctly remember. Horse Armor was just the first time DLC made it into the news, and it is also one of the first, if not THE first, cosmetic DLC.

Like Activiosn, EA started out as "the good guys." They were imperative in making the video game industry play nice as to prevent Nintendo from establishing a monopoly in the '90s. I would love to see a list about the inspiring stories of how these major companies came to be, regardless of their current reputation.

There's another scandal I recently found out about, about a game that you almost never discuss on this channel - Genshin Impact. Apparently, on the game's 1 year anniversary, tons of apps on the Google Play store got caught in the crossfire between the developers and the community. People in the community were mad at Hoyoverse because of a leak that didn't turn out to be true.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again every time it comes up: that MGSV will forever remain unfinished is one of the most tragic things in gaming. It's still a pretty great game (I still fire it up every once in a while when I want to get my stealth on), so imagine if Kojima had been allowed to finish it? Who cares about time and money when you're dealing with a long running, popular franchise by a beloved developer? Konami was so short sighted.

From what I understand it just would've been Episode 51, and Kojima actually wanted it to be DLC because it might've given "The Truth" less impact.

Every time you mention the Kojima drama you never mention the draconian practices at Konami that affected ALL of their developers. Denying bathroom breaks, demanding constant overtime and public shaming as a common practice. These things that came out about just Hideous Kojima are relatively tame in comparison. These events were documented by the staff themselves and as journalists you really should mention them because they’re people too.

Honestly, it's a shame the Saturn and Dreamcast got shafted. They were always overshadowed by bigger and more advertised systems, with the Genesis being one of the few great successes they had. The Saturn and Dreamcast, while not 100% perfect and certainly had some corkers on their systems, had some amazing games on offer.

The worst thing about the loading-screen games patent is that it should never have been granted in the first place. There were games that played while loading from cassette on the 8-bit home computers as far back as 1984, and Amiga games used to load from disk during gameplay in the late '80s and early '90s. There was *so much* prior art, nearly fifteen years of it, that the whole thing was just absurd. Yet it stood for two decades.

13:55 (the reason the left Atari): There was a memo from the marketing department at Atari showing the sales of every game. The idea was to show which types of games were doing the best (let’s make more of these). 4 of the game designers noticed that they (out of 30 total designers), made up 60% of the sales. That 60% in sales translated to $60 million for the company. Those 4 designers were each making $30,000 a year. They went to Ray Kassar (new CEO of Atari) and asked for more money. Kassar told them that they (the game designers) were no more important the the person on the assembly line who puts the cartridge together. They left to form Activision and made it a point to put the Game Designer's name on the cartridge and in the credits in the manuals.

By far the most interesting and far reaching drama in this industry is something that I'd like to write a screenplay about and see it brought to film (I already have a title for it). It's none other than the drama between Nintendo and Tengen/Atari Games back when they were mostly owned by Namco, and the whole NES10 lockout chip drama. AG/Tengen did this in protest over Nintendo's cartridge licensing and manufacturing fees and publishing limits. To have been a fly on the wall in that historic little building where all the great Atari arcade games were developed by same guttersnipes hacking away at that NES10 chip until they decided to break the law by swiping a copy of the program from the Library of Congress. The stupidity and the testicular fortitude that took was just EPIC ... 😆
