I love how Kennedy claims the goal is to "honor and preserve these characters," and then less than two years later, the EU has been nuked and jettisoned as they creatively plagiarize beloved characters by changing them to fit their new canon, either with name alterations, racial or gender swaps, or just misrepresentation of character traits whether subtly or grossly. It goes far past this piddly little culture war nonsense - this is not about politics, this is flat-out *_lies_* and hostile manipulation toward your core customer base while courting mass-mainstream social-media addicted trend-chasing casual-fandom consumers and stiffing the little guy out of his hard-earned work. And no fan should be happy with that. This isn't GATEKEEPING. This is urging people to understand. You can still love the sequels and call out Disney's behavior. Know who's okay with that? All the aspects you have listed makes me wonder what's been happening to Star Wars in general since Disney bought it. The thing is I've always liked the prequels since I was a kid and that won't change. I've also never really hated the sequels, but that was before I learned more about the problems with their story and structure. I need to watch them again and determine how I will feel about them afterwards. I'm planning to do a marathon of all nine movies before Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga; so that'll be my chance. The thing is it might be tricky for me, especially with The Last Jedi. Since it has divided the fans, I might be looking at it through two different lenses. One possibility is that I might love....and hate The Last Jedi simultaneously.

My core issues with the sequels go beyond just Rey being an insufferable Mary Sue or Kylo Ren being an ineffective antagonist, or even the egregious treatment of Luke Skywalker. They just don't work as a cohesive trilogy in of itself. Not only do they not expound upon the OT effectively but they also don't make any thematic sense within it's own trilogy. Say what you will about the quality of the prequels, at least they work as a cohesive trilogy and they have a singular vision of what story they're telling (The rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker) Plus it doesn't contradict the OT either. In fact it ties into the OT very well.

The saga being Anakin's story is another reason Luke being sidelined is bad. The original six films tell Anakin's story, but now they're doing a sequel, they should've said it was now Luke's story because Anakin was dead. Luke is the main character of the first three films so the saga revolving around Luke after Anakin's death would make total sense to me.

@StormyS711 I'm talking about what Disney should've done, and yeah, I agree that being woke is why they sidelined Luke. Disney's made so many wrong moves, and they suck! What I'm saying is Luke should've been the main character of the new trilogy, and he should've been the way he was in legends. Hell, I wish Disney would've just adapted the new jedi order series into the new trilogy. They could've also adapted the other books into the Disney plus series and also made sure not to change anything from the books! This would've been way better than decanonizing the EU, and it's also pretty clear they can't make original stories for jack shiiiiit!

He said that the star wars movies are just movies for children with space wizards and that plot holes don’t matter. LOST did the Abrams Mystery Box better then anything else for one simple reason: Abrams had no actual part of it. Looking back at interviews with the actual lead writers it's clear that understood how to use the Mystery Box because they outright stated more then once that every question presented needs to have an answer already written out and it needs to make sense. This is why LOST only had one question left unansweted that was given in a commentary for closure, and it was only the i consequential question about who was on the raft the characters saw while jumping around time (who where just a group trapped jumping around time like them but without a means of eacaping)

It seems to me that even if years pass, the reputation of the sequels will only get worse given all the shit they poured on the lore and the creator of the saga. By the way, some people compare this situation with the prequels, they say that they did not immediately receive recognition, but it turned out that I was interested in how my family reacted to Star Wars, and even found a photo of my aunt, she went to Revenge of the Sith with my mother in our local cinema called Cosmos, they still have great memories of it. And as for my experience with Star Wars, the earliest memory will probably be the fact that we then lived in the same yard and had a rich gypsy family as friends and neighbors, and I watched the original trilogy on the channel that called ORT, now known as Perviy (First) . Later I remember that they bought me as a gift an anthology of Star Wars films in 2007, there were all 6 films and two films on Ewoks, Caravan of the Brave and the Battle for Endor, the funny thing I remember is that I liked them for some reason more than numbered episodes of Star Wars. (by the way, will you review these TV movies, I still think that the Battle for Endor is a good movie and better than all the new trilogie put together) But then I forgot about the franchise for a long time sometimes playing things like Lego Star Wars and the Jedi Academy, in the end it was only by 2018 that I decided to watch all the parts with my family, we watched them in the release order, but had as much fun as if would look in chronological order. It was great until when I found out how the internet was reacting to the prequels, I was shocked by all these things and that there is hatred for George Lucas. Then it was time for the sequels... It was like a nightmare, at first we didn't know what to think about The Force Awakens, then we watched The Last Jedi and later none of us dared to watch the upcoming 9th, I watched this shit alone by myself and was depressed. But I found solace when I started playing things like Kotor, and since then I've been defending the prequels and George Lucas' vision.

Same. I didn’t even know the prequels and George Lucas were hated until force awakens. I knew people hated jar jar but that was it. Ironically that tends to be their main issue. They needed to balance Grievous out. 2008 Grievous was trash and 2003 Grievous was overpowered. ROTS Grievous is the most authentic Grievous but during the main Clone Wars, we needed to see him actually killing Jedi without being OP like the 2003 version was. For example, on Hypori, Grievous should have been using 4 lightsabers. He could still beat all 5 Jedi, but make sure his power level is reasonable. 4 lightsabers accomplishes that by showing that Grievous CAN win on his own, but he has to pull out all the stops to do so.

I’m an OT fan, loved both kotors and stilled addicted to SWTOR and it’s stories. There is nothing that saddens me more than the treatment of Luke Skywalker and I still wish that they could retcon it (even more so now after what we got with the new Luke appearances). But why is it that you feel the need to actively attack people that enjoys something you don’t? StarWars is so much more than just the story of George Lucas, and the mentality of “because he’s the creator his ideas cannot be challenged” is very unhealthy. Lucas wasn’t some story telling genius that weaved the perfect story of StarWars. He told the story along the way. The fans had every right to dislike the midichlorians as it destroyed the beautiful message and depiction of Luke and what made him so relatable to the fans. With midichlorians being a thing the fate of the characters are just locked in. and yes, I am aware that midichlorians are just how the force communicate with living things and the physical world. I liked that explanation in Darth Plagueis as it fixes many of the issues I mentioned earlier. That’s another reason I choose to not hate on the sequels, I dislike the story but with later explanations it can all become much more enjoyable. And just like the OT fans you have every right to dislike the sequels but do you wish to become the very thing that you swore to destroy? This isn’t me making a case and trying to explain why sequels is good, this is me explaining that people can genuinely like the movies without taking the “blue pill”. Mind I remind you that prequel hate was what made Lucas sold StarWars? There are so many kids growing up these days with the sequel trilogy, and they love it, wether it’s because of the stories, the characters, the CGI, whatever. Do you feel a uncontrollable rage when you see little girls at Disneyland cosplay as Rey? I agree there is so many done wrong with the sequel trilogy and to me is definitely worst out of the three but I don’t get mad at people for liking them, and they don’t have to perfectly answer your 10 questions for them to be a fan of the trilogy. No one is saying sequel is the infallible masterpiece, just like although I’m a huge OT fan, I know that it doesn’t have the best story and a lot of stuff didn’t even made much sense plot wise. I guess what I’m trying to say is, stop the hate and the negativity. We are all massive StarWars fans here, with huge passion of it. It was what drove you to even make this video essay and what made me write this comment. I know that debates will never be settled in the StarWars community but it’s time for the sequel hate to die out, just like it did with the prequels. Hating on it does not change the story, it does not hurt Disney and I’m pretty sure it doesn’t bring you joy either. The only people you are hurting are StarWars fans who enjoy the trilogy.

1. I always separate the artist to the man, I have liked Baby Driver even though Kevin Spacey were caught in doubtful affairs. Thus I appreciate Disney Star Wars movies as movies coming from artists like JJ Abrams, Gareth Edwards, Rian Johnson, and Ron Howard. 2. Rian Johnson defends the prequels, showing he respects very much George Lucas. I like the prequels and parts of the sequels. Yes George Lucas does matter, but it doesn’t change that Rian Johnson (and JJ Abrams sometimes) understands Star Wars. 3. Rian’s definition of balance is that the Jedi keep balance (as Luke teaches Rey understanding the Force as balance between life and death), whereas Snoke believes it’s darkness who rises and light to meet it. When Rian Johnson talks about « If the Jedi rise the sith are going to come back and the whole thing will start again », he never talks about this as « balance ». Rian Johnson tried to get the story back on track by making Luke teach Rey (= Lucas teaching JJ) what the Force truly is. Not some kind of magic, but the energy between all things. Rian Johnson always talks about how much he respects George Lucas and while we see The Last Jedi it’s clear this is the only sequel which expands on the meaning of the Force by following the continuity of George Lucas’ philosophy. 4. Star Wars is not Anakin’s story, it’s the Skywalker story. He made the story about the legacy of the Skywalker family. Now that Anakin is dead and the last representant of the Force user is the heir of Skywalker, thus the saga is about the Force being expanded to the whole universe, and the story becomes about freeing the Force from the Skywalker family’s pride. Thus making Kylo Ren, the last Skywalker, become the main villain, was a clever idea.
@j.j.plagiarisms71492 жыл бұрын
1. I don't. The Sequels are unethically made art, and no one who tries to defend them ever bring up the shady history of those films. 2. Ah yes the "Rian Johnson likes the Prequels" argument. If he were really a Prequel Fan, he wouldn't have retconned those movies to fuck. I'd say it's more of a PR response than anything. 3. I just showed a clip that contradicts what you're trying to tell me. 4. Dead wrong. George Lucas has stated that Star Wars is Anakin's story. Disney are trying to change what the story is by renaming it "The Skywalker Saga" which they don't even follow on making it a story about the Skywalkers given the Main character of the Sequels is a Palpatine through at least 2-3 retconned backstories. Also your defense of Kylo being the main villain is extremely weak and proves JJ and Rian are just dirty plagiarist scum.

Well, Lucas lied when he said the SE would be remasters of the OT, not the crap mess he ended up doing. And later he back stabbed all the EU creatives by changing origins, ideas and lore with his prequels, later doing it again and worse when he decided to remake the original CW event with his weak, child friendly Filoni remake. He loved making mistakes, all the way to the end. And his sequel ideas were as bad as what KK/Disney ended up doing, so in the end the result was going to be the same. When you started talking about Lucas as the creator of SW, which I am not denying, you started to sound just like the so called sequel fans, when defending their crap plagiarized knock offs, with threats of violence. Not good on your part. My question to you is, have you ever created something? A world inspired by something, or from your imagination? We are still human beings and make mistakes. Lucas certainly did. Just because he is a creative, doesn't mean he is a good writer nor director. Don't be dishonest with that, it kills your narrative, thus the message you want to say.

3.) ok, but the actual definition of “balance” makes no sense. Why is light-dominant considered balance? That’s light-dominant. Balance, by dictionary definition, is the same weight from both sides. I think Rian had something going in TLJ, but that’s just my thoughts.
@kingorange77392 жыл бұрын
No semantics in the world changed what the rules of the universe are. The reason why Dark Side users aren’t part of the balance is because while the light side is about following the will of the force and working in conjunction with it, the dark side of forcibly beating the force to obey your own will. As such the use of the dark side inherently is a corruption that disrupts the force harmony that exists between life and death.

1. This “controversy” isn’t even about the films themselves, it’s an extra-textual BTS tidbit. So, why would I “support” “the sequels” after knowing that Disney discarded his treatments? For one, I’m capable of enjoying stories without Lucas’s input. For another, we know that some of Lucas’s ideas did make it into the Sequel Trilogy. 2. This is an almost incomprehensible “challenge.” I can and do think Lucas’s opinion “matters,” as vague as that sounds, yet still enjoy the sequels. Just as I can enjoy or not enjoy parts of the SW films he was more involved in. I reject the idea that Lucas is SW. SW is a cinematic saga; its influences are necessarily pluralistic. On top of that, Lucas’s ideas for SW are iterative; they draw from disparate influences across time and cultures. And thirdly, I’ll just invoke “Death of the Author” - the meaning of a text extends beyond the author’s intent as soon as it is interpreted by an audience. This is the nature of art and if it weren’t, we would all share the same “correct” opinions about a subject that is inherently subjective. 3. This one line from Johnson isn’t out of context so much as it is misrepresentative of what he believes about the Force. He’s stating it’s what he has Luke believe, even though Luke eventually realizes the error of his ways and returns to being a Jedi. So, it’s a moot point. Again, Lucas is not the sole arbiter of artistic interpretation. That’s antithetical to interpretation. 4. If SW is just Anakin’s story, then did Lucas’s treatments resurrect Anakin? I’m sure they didn’t. Do we know if Lucas’s treatments had Anakin show up as a ghost? We don’t. But are the sequels a follow-up of Anakin’s legacy? Well, sure, given Kylo’s preoccupation with Vader and his eventual redemption. They’re about the last Skywalker and how that name grows beyond a family. 5. These aren’t “plot holes.” A plot hole “is a gap or inconsistency in a storyline that goes against the flow of logic established by the story's plot.” If TFA established that the First Order couldn’t build the Starkiller, and then showed the Starkiller, that would be a plot hole; the problem for your argument is there is no such precedent set. TFA is matter of fact about the world it sets up (or regresses, however you see it), but it never contradicts itself. Greater in-media context would be appreciated for certain aspects (although I don’t need to see the receipts for the Starkiller; this is SW, I can suspend my disbelief for space fantasy shit that doesn’t make sense), but it isn’t necessary to understand the story as it’s presented. This point is mostly just nitpicking. 6. Mysteries assist the films because they propel them forward and make them intriguing. Easy. I’m not sure you can say they “rely” on audience imaginations given that mysteries the films bring up are eventually answered. I personally prefer the way Johnson answers Abrams’ mysteries than I do Abrams does himself, but it’s subjective. 7. No one gives a shit about the PT because they have some “cohesive story” or whatever. People started caring because the people who grew up with them liked them. Then they post-hoc rationalized their way into arguing for their merits. And that’s okay! It’s ironic that you’d consider TPM unskippable given many fan discussions, like the Machete Order that deems TPM optional. Anyway, TFA and TLJ play off each other quite well. I do agree TRoS is reactive and it’s my least favorite for it. Does that mean I’m not a sequel fan? 8. The Prequels divided the fan base too. So. I’m sorry TLJ didn’t spell out its message for you… even though it did. It’s not Johnson’s fault that many SW fans lack media literacy even when the film literally spells out its themes to people. You haven’t established that the Sequels were made to divide. Just that they did divide. I think the onus is on you to prove that the multibillion dollar conglomerate Disney would be in the business of purposefully trying to alienate the core fan base to ones of its largest IPs. 9. Uhhh, what? I don’t “trust” Disney, nor do I like the films of theirs I like because a Disney employee said something about them. This is grasping at straws. 10. Here’s a challenge. Stop strawmanning. I’ve read the Thrawn Trilogy. TLJ blows it out of the water.
