In regards to Ahsoka's existence, I would've tolerated her character more if she was an apprentice to some other Jedi like Plo Koon. Making her Anakin's Padawan was not only a big mistake, but it also creates more problems, to the point that she was basically a walking plot device who was never alluded to in the movies or the CWMMP, despite having some decent arcs in the show. Now thanks to Mr. Cowboy Hat, Ahsoka has officially worn out her welcome not only out-of-universe, but in-universe as well.

What I find ironic that the EU haters criticized the old canon for being a mess, despite the hierarchy tier system the EU had, and yet Disney Star Wars couldn't keep their own continuity consistent.
@informalgeek11962 жыл бұрын
They very much can tho. Current canon isn’t the absolute mess people seem to hang in it being. People often use the same 5 examples to demonstrate it, and if you’re gonna be consistent on criticism, the EU has just as many if not more continuity issues. And if you’re gonna use arguments like this video, such as context of when a story got made to explain why it contains stupid or goofy elements, you also need to understand the context of a big budget show taking priority over a book.
@saberiandream3162 жыл бұрын
@@informalgeek1196 They've retconned the Ahsoka novel, twice. In TCW Season 7, and in the Kenobi show. In the Ahsoka novel, Obi-Wan was already speaking with Qui-Gon at this point, while in the show he is not. The Kenobi show also retcons the canon Obi-Wan comics, where he was shown using his lightsaber, while in the show he buried it. They retconned Kanan Jarrus being the last Padawan in the Bad Batch. They brought Cobb Vanth into Mando, from Chuck Wendig's Aftermath, and yet I hear they retconned elements from that too. I mean, seriously, the reason the old EU was far more consistent is relative to the limited number of movies and television shows that occupied the time periods of its long existence. Now there's a streaming show coming out every year, and they want to eventually return to the movies. Those build up and have a cumulative effect. Death of a thousand cuts.

It sounds like they have a de facto canon hierarchy but for some reason are too ashamed to admit it. I knew from the beginning that showrunners or movie directors weren't going to be told that they couldn't do something they wanted because it contradicted a book or comic. The prequels didn't contradict as much as they could have, and for the most part was able to work around the EU. The EU was decanonized in 2014, because Disney claimed they wanted more creative freedom...apparently they used that freedom to remake the OT, except worse.

Here's the thing the haters DON'T understand. If it was never canon, why even discontinue it at all? It's just that "parallel universe" that's non-canon, and the rebranding is even _more_ justification to keep it going under the new title, the way fans were asking back in 2014, and they deliberately ignore us. They're not "officially" clarifying that it was "never canon," the way apologists insist, because even if you subscribe to the idea that George was behind all the retcons in TCW, hey, at least the Clone Wars period still existed when he was in charge, it wasn't just purged from the history of the timeline. The hierarchy of canon followed the old formula that had been in place with the original sequel, Splinter of the Mind's Eye, as George was always fine allowing his story to be continued in a smaller format if he didn't possess the budget to go bigger and flashier, and despite Empire Strikes Back actually being made, the original sequel, the novel, still fit into the old EU almost seamlessly. The hierarchy of canon was a model that worked back then and still works today as it ensures that while bits of the EU can be picked up and put in the movies and that pieces of the EU could be overwritten, most of it would still exist and continue expanding - the exact same thing Disney Star Wars is doing now. Why else would the Disney sequel trilogy require a hard reboot, clean slate, and wipe out even the Old Republic era, when you really only needed to jettison the post-Endor timeline? Because they wanted to rewrite Star Wars from day one, as simple as that. It's only complicated if you CHOOSE to make it complicated by closing your mind.
@Daniel_Huffman Жыл бұрын
More importantly, if the EU was truly "never canon," why would Lucasfilm have needed to declare it non-canon in 2014? In this scenario, Lucasfilm is essentially saying, "This thing that was never canon still isn't canon." It would be a waste of breath for them.
@frostyfrenchtoast Жыл бұрын
Why would Disney expend resources doing upkeep on a wholly different publishing initiative? And besides Legends had nearly 30 years of material under its belt prior to being rebranded, so it’s not like EU fans are being neglected or anything. You have legitimately 5 or 6x the content and material then what is currently available under the Canon banner. I just fail to see the problem? I’m a sequel trilogy fan and I’m planning to read NJO and that has like 20 front to back *novels* for that single storyline, nevermind any other eras or scenarios. If you want the EU to expand you could always just make your own stuff and collaborate with other fans, you for sure have more than enough of a skeleton for that. I don’t think a lot of Canon fans actually “hate” the EU, I think it gets a common rep for being silly, but that’s kinda just what you get when your expanded universe is published under 40 different creatives each with their own unique perspectives on these characters and the mythos in general. But I will say in my experience Legends fans can be VERY obnoxious and annoying towards fans of the Disney material, so much so that many people steer clear of the Legends timeline as a knee jerk reaction to that behavior on part of some of those fans. EU hate in general is just very surface level, seeing as most legit have never read that material lol. Like being real, how can you expect me to earnestly and with an open mind consume the material that you love, when you wouldn’t in a million years afford me that same kind of respect as a fan? I’m only just now getting into the EU because of chill EU fans when I would have far sooner had I not felt so antagonized against from that community. I get called a soulless shill for liking the sequels (I wish I got paid for my character rambles lmfao) so why would I give the thing that you push forward any kind of attention? If any Canon fans were to get into the EU like you guys want, it won’t be because of you or channels like this. These channels are just circlejerks of disgruntled fans for that very reason, it’s too gatekeepish and strange for much else.

He came up with her name, her race and even her personality, while Filoni's ideas about her being timid and a little bit shy were shunted in favor of George's idea of having her be a firebrand that makes up nicknames for people.

As someone who has read Dark Empire, I don't think it's very good. HOWEVER, I do think it's less problematic than the Disney Sequels and Rise of Skywalker, for a handful of reasons. 1) Even though Palpatine returns and has an inexplicable large army and inexplicable super weapons, at least in Dark Empire, they provide something of a rule for why Palpatine survived and why he won't after Dark Empire. They explain that his spirit fled his body and went into a clone body. Now there are rumors the same is true in TRoS, but what makes Dark Empire different is --- at the end of the final installment of Dark Empire, the spirit of Sidious tries to fly into baby Anakin Solo's body to possess him -- but instead, an ex-Jedi named Brand steps in front of the baby and Sidious's soul goes into him instead. Basically, Brand traps Sidious's soul inside himself, and because Brand is dying, that extinguishes Sidious's soul once and for all. It's not the strongest writing, but at least it's something to latch onto, as far as why this time, Palpatine's death will be permanent. 2) It's very soon after Return of the Jedi. Dark Empire is only 6 years after Return of the Jedi. So even though Palpatine returns and forces the Republic off of Coruscant, it's early enough in the timeline that when they defeat him, they can bring back the Republic and the Jedi for real. Whereas the Disney Sequel Trilogy is 30 years after the OT. Luke Han & Leia rebuilt the Republic and the Jedi, only for them to be destroyed. By the end of the Sequels, Luke, Han, & Leia are dead, and it just feels like the entire generation after Return of the Jedi was pointless. But in Dark Empire, less time is made pointless. And Luke hadn't even started bringing the Jedi back yet in Dark Empire, so they didn't have to destroy anything there. 3) Luke Skywalker bringing back the Jedi. Palpatine was only a part of Dark Empire. Another huge part of Dark Empire was Luke Skywalker beginning his quest to bring back the Jedi Knights and train new students. One of the most quoted lines from Dark Empire is "The Jedi Knights shall rise again!" There's so much mythology and world building in Dark Empire, at least as far as ancient Jedi are concerned. The planet Ossus is introduced, as well as older former Jedi like Bodo Baas, Vima Da Boda, Empatojayos Brand, and Ood Bnar (who's literally a talking tree). Luke actually starts finding some students like Kam Solusar, Rayf Ysanna, and Gem Ysanna. So Luke isn't an apathetic hermit who wants the Jedi to end and doesn't want to oppose evil like is is in The Last Jedi. Even when he joins Sidious, as J.J.P. pointed out, he does it to infiltrate Sidious and take him down from the inside. Even when he turns to the Dark Side, it's only because of how harrowing the experience is. He's not doing it out of betrayal.

Awesome video. The EU, or as I call it, Real Star Wars, was always supervised in one way or another by Lucas himself, thus creating along running saga with very specific lore developed, including the canon tiers. That is one of the many reasons I don't like he ended up doing in his "Special Editions" or prequels, as Lucas basically back stabs all who worked in either the original films and the already established lore, and it got even worse when in his "wisdom" decided to once again and for the last time, back stab all who fixed his screw ups in his prequels, by wanting to remake the Clone Wars event with the help of Filoni the hack. Another thing that is sad is that Lucas was extremely inconsistent on his thoughts regarding the EU. You call it nuance but I call it, lack of memory. When he talked about Slinter of the Mind's Eye, he still had a brain, after that, he just lost it and forgot many times the importance of what he once said, while keeping other projects in check, like during the post "Mind's Eye" early EU Marvel comics and once again during the EU renaissance with Heir to the Empire and Dark Empire. I've written articles about his early involvement in the EU, specially during the early years, and yes, he was always involved, but in the end he ended up hurting the EU, thus hurting SW. All his screw ups adding up until he made his last, selling. The EU IS my Star Wars. On another "unrelated" topic. Would love to discuss your thoughts on the Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2.

I have heard TWC was later explained as Republic propaganda or at least some it, if I am not mistaken Fantasy Flight Games (they make Star Wars tabletop stuff) uses COMPOR later COMPNOR to explain some of the conflicting sources from TCW and the Old EU. I do remember a theory on Reddit that TCW is Republic propaganda with the blasting music and the stinger that follows it is similar to allied propaganda in WW2. I would prefer TCW treated as propaganda given I am beginning to explore the Clone Wars Multimedia project, so I far prefer the Old EU as it does better job telling stories and doesn’t make the separatist look like an 80s cartoon villain, it is far more realistic than what TCW does. And this coming from someone who grew up with TCW and both prequels and original trilogy. They are some elements I liked from TCW, like the Umbara Arc, the Commando Droids and the tactical droids. As you can see it is a short list.
@informalgeek11962 жыл бұрын
The COMPNOR retcon isn’t real. It’s a one sentence line that in no way covers TCW since using the canon tier system TCW takes precedence. So if you actually used the FF blurb (even tho it in no way implies it’s a meta comment and not just a lore blurb, and you have to ignore that FF games have always been super messy with continuity) it would apply to the EU. TCW would be what really shortened and the republic comics and such the propaganda.

Honestly, Disney literally could've just had their new trilogy be an adaptation of eu stories that took place after return of the jedi. Preferably for me, I would've liked to see the New Jedi order series be adapted into the new trilogy. I feel like that would've been the perfect story since it takes place in the expanded universe around the right time to match the original actors' ages. It also has new characters to introduce at the right time (Luke's wife and son, and Han and Leia’s kids), and it contributes to the Star Wars universe like the prequels did by introducing an alien race from another galaxy. Then we also get to know the rules of this galaxy as well, and we could've even had questions about this unidentified threat, kind of like we had questions about Snoke, Rey's parents, who Palpatine is, etc. (Except this time, our questions are answered because THERE'S ACTUALLY A DAMN PLAN!!!) We also get to see Luke Skywalker in action instead of him being jaded, which I don't think it was too much to ask out of Disney. I'd also prefer they didn't change a single thing about the story (except for when they make the timing of the story fit with the trilogy) because it's pretty clear when they come up with their own ideas, they're so bad.

So that created a t canon slot for tcw. What!! Why? Given the fact that the eu has been around longer than tcw and has kept mostly consistent continuity with g canon, shouldn't thr t canon slot be under the eu slot? I mean, why give one show more freedom than books, games and comics that have been around for decades. That's completely disrespectful and unfair the the eu writers who have worked hard to kept things consistent, though to be fair, Filoni should have been more consistent with the eu out of respect for the eu writers and for established lore

What about those of us who think G canon is the only canon, and that EU and Disney canon are both "What if?" stories? Basically, it's just G canon, and everything else is "what if?". Same with JAWS 1. JAWS is canon. JAWS 2 is just a What if. Same with the ET commercial that's a sequel to ET. It's just a what if. Same as the EU. Same as Disney Star Wars.

I didn't like Thrawn in OT era it made no sense. Also no Luke and Mara in the story, lame. And Disney Thrawn is so weak. You are right about Clone Wars being lower canon from the films, Disney elevated it to the same level of canon of films 1-6. And also, their sequel trilogy and all their cartoon shows, comics and novels.

@@j.j.plagiarisms7149 because he’s 900. We know other Jedi who have multiple sabers at a fraction the age. Whatever the answer he has 2 (Also, he’s had 2 since 2004, as the part of 2016s consults locations was a copy over. 2016s complete locations was a simple updated version of 2005s complete locations, simply with TFA added. A lot of the stuff here is still really goofy. And FYI I say this as an EU fan. And before the gatekeeping of who is or isn’t an EU fan comes back up, I own almost every print piece of EU ever produced. Using the EU for example you skipped over the fact that the empire built another 2 Death Stars. A pro type shell and inbetween 1 and 2 they constructed the Tarkin super laser. They also had the super ice weapon super weapon inbetween them. And a claiming SSD super weapon.
@sonofluke31722 жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, the EU can get super goofy (love it for that btw) but I think it makes total sense that the Empire would have multiple superweapons. And out of universe, two of the three original trilogy movies centered on a superweapon plot, so I think some writers are operating on the logic that the Empire prioritizes making these gigantic doomsday weapons.

As someone who actually likes the EU, I have to disagree on the Disney rehashing stuff. I think it is unfair to hate on the inclusion of EU concepts and characters *unless* these are done ridiculously poorly such as Thrawn's return and the use of Scorpeneks in Book of Boba Fett which was god awful. I still appreciate the Canon Thrawn novels, the references to the *real* Tales of the Jedi (not the Filoni shit), Darth Revan, the Tarkin novel in general, nods to the Outrider, etc etc. My main reason for saying this is that it proves that there are people who actually care in Lucasfilm who aren't just morons.
