1. White dress shirt
The fabric should be either made of plain poplin weave or a fine herringbone twill. Ideally, you want a medium spread collar because it can be worn with many things and it works with every face shape. You also want no chest pocket because it's a formal shirt and formal shirts don't have chest pockets.
2. Light blue dress shirt
You want it to be made from a rugged fabric such as Oxford. You can also go with poplin, maybe a twill weave or anything else that stands the test of time. If you live in warmer regions, you can also get an open weave fabric, but overall, I suggest you stay clear of the chest pocket even though you could wear it because it's a less formal shirt.
3. Navy suit
To start, I'd invest in a single breasted suit with notched lapels, not too skinny, not too wide, about 10cm or 4 inches for the lapel width. I would choose side vents and flap pockets. If you don't like the single-breasted style, you can also go for double-breasted with six buttons and two closing buttons. For pants, I would choose cuffed, and since I have bigger thighs, I would go pleated. Of course, that's up to you.
4. Classic navy blazer
No, not the one from your suit. While you can wear that jacket as a separate with khakis, if you get a navy blazer, you should get something distinctly different. That being said, get a lighter shade of navy than your suit because it has to look different and a lighter color is usually more casual which is the origin if the blazer hence, you should go with that.
5. Gray flannel suit
It's a classic wardrobe staple and men like Cary Grant wore it in North by Northwest; Gianni Agnelli made it world-famous with a specific shade from Vitale Barberis Canonico. It's not just so popular because some famous people wore it, it's very functional, versatile, and for example, you can take the pants and wear it with a navy blazer which is another very classic combination.
6. Tweed sportcoat
I'm wearing one right now; it's a twill weave with a nice windowpane overcheck. There are lots of other options, for example, with a houndstooth, or a regular twill, or a shepherd's check or simply a Donegal tweed, no matter how old you are or what your style is, there's a tweed sports coat out there that suits you perfectly.
7. Gabardine trench coat
It's a timeless classic that has a military history; it's a perfect raincoat. It can have a liner for colder months of the year, and in a double-breasted silhouette, it's simply elegant, and you can pair it with formal suits as well as casual combinations.
8. Chinos
Chinos are cotton pants that come in a tone of khaki, sand, or stone, and they're more casual and very versatile. You can wear them with all kinds of jackets or just a shirt or a sweater and they're often office appropriate.
9. Vest or waistcoat
Personally, I love vests; I have lots of them. If I'd have to pick just one vest, I'd go with a burgundy collar, maybe a flannel, or doe skin, because it's contrasting and you can pair it with anything else I discussed today and a lot more.
10. Sweater
More specifically a bottle green wool sweater with a V-neck because I like to wear them all the time. If you don't, go with a crew neck that is round and it just looks better than a V-neck. It's perfect to layer over shirts, you can have it under jackets, you can wear it on its own, or with an overcoat, and just keeps you warm in the winter.

I agree with most content... I don't agree with the suggestion not to wear a belt with a vest. Most 3pc suits contain a pant with belt loops for a reason. If there's a belt loop there should also be a belt. Also these are good tips but, not all for ethnic folk. We dress a different style. Example: The sweaters suggested aren't going to happen, nor do we wear the cuffed pajama pant. :-)

I loved the video, I find it very useful and I will try to remember everything you said here! You have become my favourite KZbinr, please don't stop making videos! May I suggest a couple of topics that I would like to see in your channel some day? The first would be leather. Different kinds of leathers and their quality, tips to take care of leather items, what to buy and what to avoid, etc. I love leather and I have many things made of it, from a jacket to a messenger bag, gloves, boots or shoes but I am never sure about what kind of leather I'm buying and if it's the proper one, and how to take of it. The second topic would be colours. Colors that work pretty well together, colors that clash, appropiate colors for different occasions, etc. Matching colors is my weakest point, I am just not good at it! I hope you don't take my suggestions the bad way, it's just that I love your channel and have watched almost all your videos by now and I do trust your opinion when it comes to clothes as you clearly know what you are talking about. Thank you for clearly stating the word "afford". Not the most expensive item, but the most most expensive you can afford. Say you are at the upper end of the low price range. If you can afford to shell out a few more bucks to push you into the lower end of the mid price range then do it. But don't go for a $150 if it's out of your range.

I plan to start wearing like you do on a daily basis even when I'm not required to, and I'm literally never required to, not even at my job and not even to job interviews (believe it or not, this is somehow how it works where I live, men here almost never wear anything other than t-shirts and jeans). I love my London Fog, full-length trench-coat. I bought it over 30 years ago and though it's got some mileage on it, it still looks and feels great. When I wear it on a wet winter's day, it's like being embraced by a loved one. I've only had it cleaned once or twice in all those years, and it's even missing a button or two, because, as an old Baltimore homicide detective once told me, a trench-coat should speak volumes of it's owner and the countless cigarettes and coffees consumed while on a life-time of all-night stake-outs.

I have the Paul Evans Penny Loafer. It fits very well however the outer edge of my left shoe is scraped in less than a year of wear. Also I am in the process of buying a shoe stretcher since the shape of the shoe constricts my pinkies. The leather is great, didn't shine it for half a year and still had an acceptable shine. The heel has that click-clack sound. I don't know if this is a hallmark of quality but I don't mind it. I don't think I will buy this Penny Loafer. First I'll buy www.velasca.com/en/product/penny-loafers/168-men-loafers-black-full-grain-leather-leather-sole-demoniett.html then when I have enough money I'll just get a bespoke pair from Berluti.

It's not clear to me why there is such a shibboleth against 'link cuffs' ie French cuffs, but not double-heavy with the traditional foldover. To quote from an article about Alexander Kabbaz, an approved custom maker of bespoke shirts: '...Master Shirtmaker Alexander Kabbaz touts the benefits of link cuffs. Link cuffs are designed to be fastened with cufflinks, but not to fold over like French cuffs. Explaining one of the benefits, Kabbaz said "The major advantage here is comfort. Unlike the double-heavy French cuff, link cuffs are much lighter. In addition, the do not have the great bulk of the better-known cuff and therefor slide much more easily within the jacket sleeve. "It is little-known", he continued, "that the link cuff was not only the first cuff, but also the most formal. It is the only acceptable cuff to wear with formal dress. Before the idea of buttons came about, men were known to punch a hole in the (single) cuffs and use a string to tie them together for warmth." ' George VI of England once reprimanded his son, the Prince of Wales, for wearing brown shoes with a blue suit. Of course once Edward VIII became king, he became a tastemaker and mainstreamed this choice of color. Later as the Duke of Windsor, he was famous for his immaculate good taste as well as for choosing the most comfortable clothes he could wear, and bringing many other heretofore proscribed articles of clothing into fashion, like blue dress shirts and Fair Isle sweaters. It seems to me that there is nothing inherently untasteful about single-thickness, 'link cuffs'; the only objection seems to be that they are 'comme il faut' for white tie; it is as though they are 'reserved' for white tie. Surely this doesn't exclude them from our fashion purview. I would love to hear the Gentleman's Gazette's opinion as to this topic.

+Sam Lander I have seen Mr Kabbaz in person at trade shows a few times, and I would certainly not dress the way he does, but each to his own. Also bear in mind, that a great craftsman is not necessarily great stylists. A single cuff of a white tie shirt was traditionally starched, clean and neat. Folding it would have not looked good. Comparing a starched single cuff on an evening shirt to a single cuff on a modern day dress shirt is like comparing apples to oranges because the starch is what ultimately increases the formality. An unstarched wing collar and cuff would not work with white tie. The Prince of Wales like softer less formal items and so he preferred a softer turndown collar and soft double cuffs for his black tie ensembles but he'd still wear properly starched cuffs with white tie. Today, single cuffs on dress shirts are ususlly only found on combination cuffs, meaning they have button next to the hole so you can wear them with cufflinks or with a button.
