It is great to be able to forage and hike, adds to the journey when you start to learn about the way everything is connected out there. The mushroom you harvested from what I could see in the video is not chicken of the woods, some mushrooms can really mess you up, and when you do find chicken of the woods boil it for about 15 minutes to make it less likely to cause stomach upsets( some people react with upset stomachs, but cooked properly I have never had an issue). For the mushroom look for a shelf like mushroom, with a very orange top, and white pores on the underside if the mushroom is close to or on the ground at the base of a tree, it will usually have yellow pores when found on the trunk of a tree. Luckily from my understanding most shelf mushrooms aren’t poisonous, just not eatable, but it is best practice to only eat with 100% certainty. Great Vlog as always, it is inspiring!

I just wanna say I think this whole challege youre doing is amazing. This whole thing is great advice for future thru hikers. Thank you for showing that we really dont need $4,000 to $6,000 to hike the trail! Its a different hike for sure, but still doable so far. Keep kicking ass!

I just got back from a short hike in the smokies and heard you were there! I met Burnt Beard and California at Icewater, I think it was last Tuesday. Burnt Beard was running to the shelter literally a second before the sky opened up with a torrential downpour 😂California was super interesting to talk to and very polite. Both great guys, hope they have a successful hike 😀

I think a poultice of wild plantain might help with the poison ivy. I so appreciate you and your content. I've been telling my hiking buddies about this challenge. Also. Definitely will be interested in your training course. I hike with lots of chronic injury issues from a really bad car accident in 2014. My knees were both broken along with my tib fib plateau. I desperately want my knee mobility back as I plan to attempt the AT. You look like you are having a blast. Hike on.

Glad you’re doing this. QQ, in the pre video in which you’re getting your gear together, I thought the $1k was for gear and trip costs. Is it only for costs incurred on the trip including pre bought food?

What do you think of the Ray Jardine claim that a tarp is better than a tent b/c the lack of condensation in a properly pitched tarp can prevent condensation, keeping you warmer?
@dumbcrumb8796 ай бұрын
I feel like that really only applies if the condensation ends up touching you and your sleeping bag but otherwise it would be the same.
@RC-qf3mp6 ай бұрын
@@dumbcrumb879 Jardine was a NASA engineer. He didn’t go by what it ‘feels like’ to him, but years of experience, analysis and testing. It’s not just about condensation touching you, but air flow and warmth (from lack of condensation) and colder temperatures caused by condensation.
@samuelfox81266 ай бұрын
The top surface of any material in a most environment will have condensation from dew when the dew point is reached. You are describing the condensation from breathing and body perspiration. The fabric of a tarp and tent, made of the same material, will be equally wet from dew.
@RC-qf3mp6 ай бұрын
@@samuelfox8126 so you’re saying Jardine, a NASA engineer and pioneer in hiking, who basically invented ‘ultralight’ hiking and the very idea of a ‘base weight’, had no clue what he was talking about? Of course dew can be reached on the outside. That’s not the issue. The issue is whether a tarp is superior to a tent, as Jardine claimed, because of the ventilation and air circulation on the inside that allowed for warmth. Jardine wrote a chapter on this topic in his hiking book, and wrote a book on it in his book on tarps.
@samuelfox81266 ай бұрын
@@RC-qf3mp I'm saying Quadzilla would've had his tent inside out if he were trying to shake off the inside condensation. So inside condensation isn't what Quadzilla is addressing. He was addressing dew. And I'm regards to dew, a tarp is no different. It's placement. But since you're questioning me using Jardine's credentials to back you up, NASA has had more than a few MASSIVE blunders. That's kind of a gentle up yours. It's kind of being Captain obvious to say a tarp ventilates more. That takes zero intelligence.

There are various milage challenges along the way. The CT challenge is 54 miles in one day. In 2018, I saw a tramily of 4 do it together but very few since then. As a retired US Army Corps of Engineer(USACE) Officer, I can tell you that projects are of long duration, great complication, and exciting to complete. The Fontana Dam is a USACE project. You might enjoy getting involved in a construction project. I built many bridges and really enjoyed the process. Have fun. Good Luck, Rick
