50/50 on Sundays, but only because the nearest TLM is two hours away. We consider ourselves “TLM only” and attend the NO only on weekends we are “in exile.” Moving is something we have discerned, but isn’t possible right now.

TLM when available. SSPX comes once a month max, some months not (like this month). Otherwise we go to a Greek Catholic or relatively reverent NO. Things are a bit more conservative here in Hungary, I think. I have never seen an altar girl, and "Extraordinary" ministers are rare.

We go to a Novus Ordo. I think the priest would go for a TLM, and I'm not sure if it's the laity that stops him here, or if it's the bishop. It tends to retain quite a few of the traditional elements mentioned here, such as facing away from the people, the silent prayers, and the use of latin for some prayers. He does chant most of the prayers, and sometimes the Gospel. No altar girls. Encourages receiving on the tongue while kneeling, but hasn't mandated it.

Fr. Mike might be on the thumbnail on the NO side, but I learned from him why ad orientum was such a big deal. He’s actually the one who got me started learning about TLM because he presented it in such a simple and compelling way.

Fr. Mike is definitely a faithful priest but I never understood why he didn't attempt to celebrate as orientem when he started streaming. It really didn't make sense during covid when so many priests were ready to look at a camera in an empty church and turn their back to the crucifix and the Tabernacle.

@@DavidOrtiz-fd2lb You have to find a priest who is willing to meet with you one-on-one for direct instruction. He'll probably assign readings and then discuss those with you in weekly meetings. I'm not sure that it always follows that formula; there are probably variations. My advice is to begin by praying for a couple of weeks that the Holy Mother will guide you to a really good priest.

Not to mention talking in sweeping statements that I have never seen in any church. The tabernacle is not “down a hallway” and I always have had mass with bells used during the consecration. @@deec7124 You probably in a conservative area. There are many churches I've been to in my life, pre-TLM, where I had to play "hide and seek" with Jesus in the Tabernacle. In Springfield Mo. In Belleville, Il diocese. In Virginia. It used to be more common, one bishop specifically put them all back since a previous bishop had removed them from the altar area. I've seen it behind the side of the altar, in a side room, in a separate section at the back of the church. I never cared for those churches. But I've found them in rather abundance around the country. Oh, a closet in an Indiana chapel. That was the worst. Leading me to assume where you are located did not have a hippie Dippie bishop who followed that trend.

I'm not Catholic, so my knowledge on this topic is basically limited to what's explained in this video. But just from hearing this, the Latin Mass sounds way better to me. Maybe its just my personality type (quiet, reserved, don't wanna stick out like a sore thumb, etc) but anytime I've ever been at some sort of event, whether its a family gathering or a rock concert, I always prefer to be quiet and observe whatever is going on. The one concert I've been to in my life I was literally just annoyed to hear people screaming constantly while the music was being played, vs me just wanting to sit quietly and actually hear what I paid for... well ok I didn't pay for it, I was invited, but you get my point. Catholicism seems so much more complex and deep compared to other versions of Christianity, that the thought of random normies participating in these ceremonies just strikes me as odd. Its like, if I want to hear what Joe down the street has to say I'll ask him when I'm out walking the dog, not while I'm in church trying to learn something important. If you're in class, you don't want the teacher to step aside and let a student conduct the lecture, so how on earth did someone think it makes sense to do that in regards to peoples' souls and honoring God. At least that's how it appears to me as someone that's a total outsider, but the Novus Ordo thing just seems a bit... disrespectful, tacky... like it doesn't respect boundaries. Its like when you talk to a stranger and they get too personal if that analogy makes sense. Plus... anything with the words "new" and "order" in it... Makes me wanna grab my tin foil hat... On a side note, as a non-Catholic, I've commented here quite a bit and you guys always respond with great replies and make me feel welcome here, so I wanted to say thank you to everyone. I'm enjoying learning more about Catholicism, its really beautiful

I’ve been to Novus Ordo masses where everything is proper, I was raised in a parish like this. However, I’ve also visited other churches where things are bordering on sacrilegious and are very irreverent; from the placement of the tabernacle to the sorts of music used to all other aspects of the mass. The lack of uniformity has enabled those who wish to invoke novelty to do so, whereas those who wish to preserve tradition and reverence have been forced to the sidelines or out of the picture entirely.

I'm a cradle Catholic who love the imperfect Novus Ordo Mass where I can receive our Lord in the Holy Eucharist with a contrite heart and ask the Lord to see through the imperfections of myself, the congregation, the priests, the lectors, the altar servers, the lay ministers and the mass as a whole. It is at the Novus Ordo that I am always reminded of the love of God and therefore Love Him above all and love our neighbors as our selves. A symbolic representation of the vertical and horizontal beam of the cross and the 2 most important law given to us by Christ Jesus. One cannot exist without the other. And so after the mass there is always that peace that I try to live. To understand others and not much to be understood. To see the beam in my eye and not be judgemental of others. To serve others than seek to be served. Yet I'm imperfect so I ask God for forgiveness when I have failed.

I attend the FSSP in Irving, TX. (Mater Dei). The thing that bothers me most about the sign of peace at the NO Mass is that it comes right after consecration -where all focus should be on the altar. When they break and shake hands, kiss, talk to the people around them, etc it takes the focus completely away from Christ and puts it on man. I would have gently landed that point. Love listening to you, sir!

Sir I do certainly agree with you.The traditional Mass or the Mass of all times is the correct Mass,,promulgated by St. Pius 5 and enhanced by St Pius 10 ..but Giovanni Batista Montini and “archbishop “ bulgani tried very hard to abrogate the Mass and insert the novus ordo, along with some 7protestant ministers, some of whom did not believe in the Real Presence , then montini said that the smoke of satan had entered the Catholic Church, What a horrible mess 😢

I was taking masters classes at Notre Dame University in Indiana and studying the Liturgy from a priest well known for his modern song used in the Novus Ordo Mass. When he spoke of the TLM he was very critical of the 'silliness', his words not mine, of the TLM with regard to garments, prayers, etc. He even showed us an old black and white film of the Latin Mass while making fun of the movements of the altar servers and other things. I knew in my heart of hearts that everything he was teaching and criticizing was wrong. It was because of this that I sought out the TLM in my diocese and fell in love with it. My faith life has greatly increased since then. Dr. Taylor Marshall has a great explanation of the differences of these Liturgies. Lots to think and pray about.

@@benedictchinweuba5820 Respectfully, Latin IS the Universal language of the Roman Catholic Church and as such Latin should be used at all Masses all over the Earth. The Latin mass was “Canonized” centuries ago and having different languages is a direct result of rebellion and division in the Church to this day. See the Protestants (specifically Anglican, Lutheran, Episcopalian, etc), and certain Orthodox Churches to this present time. It is a known fact that Vatican 11 incorporated the vernacular to appease all of these “religions”! That is why Non Catholics participated in that Council and all of the “Synods” since. All of this was done in the name of “ecumenism”! The results are obvious- catastrophic to the Catholic Church. It is not our strength to be divided in the “One Holy and Apostolic Roman Catholic Church”.

No singing during communion, silence as opposed to distracting song. Generally much more reverent. Respectful in dress & kids not eating cheerios running toy cars behind your back or running in the ailes. Hands folded while in line for holy communion. No one leaves early and most stay over even if just a couple minutes. No clapping ever as there was clapping at the crucifixion.

Dear Sir, As a Roman Catholic priest of 25 years I am amazed at the way you have set the two against each other. First, I take issue with your description "Traditional Latin Mass." It is beyond doubt that the Mass has evolved over the years from being said in Greek (and probably other languages in the Eastern Rites) to finally being settled in the 16th century at a time when the (so-called) "Reformation" obliged the Church to formally decree its form and content. However, Pius V could not have forseen that the laity, far from remaining uneducated and superstitious peasants, would eventually become educated, articulate and often better theologically educated than some clergy. That was one of the many fruits of Vatican II - recognition that the Church had totally changed. One very small point if I may. You pointed out that Holy Communion should not be given into the hand because "our hands are not consecrated." As a very old and wise priest responded to a lady who said the same thing, "Well madam, who consecrated your tongue?" I have found your blog interesting but in the end it seems to me to come down to this, "For those who like the 'Traditional Latin Mass' that is what they like" to paraphrase Miss Jean Brody. I could say much more but I think you will get my point.

Agree with receiving the Eucharist by hand. I appreciate that many of us feel it is much more reverent to take it by tongue, but there is no merit to demand that same belief on to other Christians. Moreover, the true original tradition of giving sacred bread was actually by hand. Receiving it by hand still reverent if done properly. And, contrary to what they think, receiving it by tongue does NOT prevent sacrilege (it only deters it) because ill-intent people can still take it out of their mouth after they leave.

Unfortunately I now have to drive 68 kms to hear the Latin Mass because our priest will only say the Novus Ordo in my town. The 'holiness' of the Latin Mass is more paramount and I feel humbler.

Yes they think it’s the same as novus ordo except just said in Latin. And then they complain that they don’t know Latin. My father would tell us all during our childhood that is no excuse. The English is directly across from the Latin so you can read it in English. Also, in my opinion, a big difference is the laity actually don’t have a lot of responses. So it’s very easy. There is a lot more listening and reading along which I think Catholics would benefit from. More listening and less talking.

@@thecalderasiblings7198 Sure. But at least where I live in Canada, (I go to numerous parishes on occasion, always before/after Latin) the parishes ALL give communion in the hand, have women reading and giving the body of Christ, saying the heretical version of the “Glory be” (not intentionally heretical, granted) and as Pius X put it, they all have this “reprehensible desire of novelty”. They seem to think becoming more “Protestant” in nature will bring in more people. I assure you, it only brings in the old folks. TLM has many young folks. Younger Gen is craving orthodoxy. While you’re correct, TLM is not exempt from liturgical abuse, it’s certainly the lesser of the two. And it’s just objectively more beautiful. A mass that rightly shows the grandeur and awesomeness of our faith. A mass more worthy of Christ compared to new order.

I’ve been around a fare bit. I was raised in a really Novus Ordo parish so i don’t make sweeping generalizations about it, but there are some issues with lack of uniformity that enable those who embrace novelty and modernism to push those philosophies onto the lay faithful. I’ve seen some pretty irreverent and borderline sacrilegious practices in Novus Ordo churches, I’ve never seen anything like that in Tridentine Masses, although I’m sure they’re not immune from them. I’ve been to all 48 contiguous states and Alaska and I’ve attended masses in all of them, and while the geography certainly plays a factor in how the mass is presented, the Novus Ordo vs Tridentine differences are far more numerous and more pronounced.

This is sooo good thank you! I never knew why they removed the Tabernacle!! We have the Tabernacle up and behind the "table" above a traditional smaller altar (which was supposed to be used for,the Latin Mass, but they have cut back on the parishes that have the TLM in our diocese. ) so our priests have their backs to the Tabernacle . My Church was designed by our previous beloved pastor (May his soul rest in peace) , who loved the Latin Mass. It was built 8 years ago and has side altars, a communion Rail and a Traditional Altar behind the "table-Altar". He used to say the Latin Mass once a week as the Bishop at the time allowed. Just some clarifications to help those confused by what Taylor has said. 1. Vatican II did not do away with Latin and had no intention of doing away with Latin if you read the council documents. The fact that the Mass is said in many languages is not how it was supposed to be. There was room for acceptations for the use of the vernacular but it is not something that is intrinsic to the celebration of the Novus Ordo as stated Taylor "it can be said in Latin, but is very rare." 2. Orientation is another misleading topic. The Novus Ordo rubric assumes the priest is facing the altar and away from the people as it says multiple time for the priest to turn and face the people. Vatican II did not call for the priest to change orientation, this was from a general rebellion of priests and bishops doing whatever they wanted under the guise of the 'spirit' of the council. The Novus Ordo Mass can be said facing East, it does happen in many parishes and should happen in all parishes. As Taylor admits later on even in some basilicas like Saint Peters in Rome sometimes the Pope and bishops face the people beacuse of the way the Church is built. He says "its not a hard and fast rule." So this point he is making isn't even a differnce between the Traditional Latin Mass and Novus Ordo. 3. Personally I don't know much about the vestments, but as far as I am aware there is nothing stopping priests saying the Novus Ordo from wearing a manipole. I have been to parishes were the priest wears one. 5. Ok, I think that this is the first big change he mentioned and I don't understand why anyone could be against hearing more of the word of God from the Bible at Mass. A 3 year cycle of reads which come from the Old Testament, New Testament and the Gospels. I have heard priests talk on this and even ones who say the Traditional Latin Mass think that it would be worth incorporating this change into the liturgy. It is beautiful and helps the faithful learn more of the word of God and also gives far more content for priests to preach on in their homily. His comments about the response psalm are silly and quirky, hardly any places do this hand raise thingy with the singing. Many parishes have the choir and cantor do this section like in the Traditional Latin Mass. 6. When he says that everything is spoken out loud and on a microphone, yet again this is something that happens but is not technically part of the liturgy or rubric of the Mass. It can be said with silence and without a microphone. For him to say that there is less singing in the Traditional Latin Mass is completely untrue. There is singing almost all the time at least in the parishes I've been to. 7. The concelebration point is odd because it is something that happens sometimes but isn't something is intrinsic to the Novus Ordo liturgy and so cannot be considered a big change since he admitted that is does happen in the Traditional Latin Mass at the ordination of priests. It's not like all the things he is mentioning have sprung out of thin air. He did not mention or explain how at a Traditional Latin High Mass there are often priests assisting as deacon and sub-deacon. 8. The laity physical participation in the Novus Ordo is also not part of the liturgy. Things like the offertory procession can happen but it does not need to happen. Many parishes don't do it. Same with the sign of peace. Many parishes choose not to do it. Personally I love when the whole congregation says the Our Father. The laity administering Holy Communion is technically not encouraged or generally even allowed according to Vatican II. It is only under very extraordinary circumstances. Many parishes do not have anyone but the priest distributing Holy Communion. Just because lots do does not mean that this is how the Novus Ordo should be done. Same goes here for female altar servers. It is not supposed to happen. 9. I'm getting tired of each of these points Taylor is doing because they all fall into the same category of things which technically are not supposed to happen and now are seen as part of the Novus Ordo. Communion should be received on the tongue kneeling and the Church documents encourage this. There can be acceptations but a priest can actually never refuse communion to someone if they want to receive on the tongue kneeling. 10. Ok, this one is a finally an actually liturgical difference. Bonus. This one I don't get! He says that bells are a big difference. I don't know what parishes he has been to but I have never been to a parish which has not wrung the bells at all the correct times just like the Traditonal Latin Mass. Almost all of these points are unnecessary and are NOT TRUE differences between the actual Novus Ordo Mass and the Traditional Latin Mass. The Novus Ordo can be said in a beautiful and sacred way with Latin in the words, chant and hymns. These sorts of videos are not good for helping people understand the liturgy properly and cause more division among Catholics and Christians who have not had a chance to study this in depth. Please try to create more content that helps bring about understanding to help people come together. Christ prayed that his Church be one. Taylor please try to be more clear when you talk about the Novus Ordo instead of just making fun of it. Whether you dislike these 'socalled' changes to the Novus Ordo it is still THE MASS, Christ is still present. It is not something to be ridiculed but morned for the abuses and then comforted and healed. Try to do more healing instead of hurting. God Bless

Yes, just when the world was turning away from nationalism after World War II and needed symbols of the unity of all peoples, the Church abandoned its universal liturgical Latin language and took up individual national and regional vernaculars. In a way, in trying to “update” the Church, its leaders put it behind the times. Go figure.

Dr. Marshall, since the awful Novus Ordo was thrust on us, there are more people than ever before who are ready to personally experience the Traditional Latin Mass and your video is the best means to briefly, but effectively, guide them in that respect. The grace of God has heightened the receptivity of many for such instruction as you provide here. There's a lot that you tell them, but without overloading them. Thanks to your succinct presentation, that is less than 30 minutes in length, newbies can intelligently follow and spiritually profit from their first TLM. May these first timers also note that their ''active participation'' as laity is not external, but internal, freeing them from interruptions, mandatory responses and mutual exchange of gestures, that distract the soul's response to what the Holy Ghost wants to impart to it and intrude on the solace and encouragement that Jesus Eucharistic desires the soul to fully feel.

@@KMF3 The TLM is the most perfect combination of corporate and individual Worship. Paradoxically, the unchangeable TLM provides the best opportunity for our spontaneous response to Jesus Eucharistic during Mass and particularly at Communion time, because while the priest celebrant is standing before the Altar, with his back to us, and the people in the pews are occupied with their own thoughts and prayers, we are virtually left alone to give our undivided attention to God so we can gratefully receive every blessing He is about to bestow on us. While the Mass proceeds as if on autopilot, our souls stir with spiritual activity never before attained. When Mass is finished, we truly go in peace.

As a German, I find it quite interesting how big the Impact of the papal decree was.. In Germany we almost only celebrate Novus Ordo Masses. We have a few exceptions (for special masses outside of the "normal" sunday celebration). In almost all german churches, the high altar has been either removed or modified. Funny enough, I came to the realisation, that we actually have a sort of hybrid between both. I just find it very astounding how many different Masses there are, and how they are implementen very differently in different countries and cultures.

But they cut out crucial texts, like those against homosexual behavior. The NO Lectionary reading for Romans stops at Romans 1:25 and omits what comes after, so Catholics don't hear verses :26-32, which say: "For this cause God delivered them up to shameful affections. For their women have changed the natural use into that use which is against nature. And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts one towards another, men with men working that which is filthy, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error. And as they liked not to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them up to a reprobate sense, to do those things which are not convenient; Being filled with all iniquity, malice, fornication, avarice, wickedness, full of envy, murder, contention, deceit, malignity, whisperers, Detractors, hateful to God, contumelious, proud, haughty, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, Foolish, dissolute, without affection, without fidelity, without mercy. Who, having known the justice of God, did not understand that they who do such things, are worthy of death; and not only they that do them, but they also that consent to them that do them." Rom. 1:26-32

So good! I learned so much. I went to Latin Mass as a child. I haven’t been to a TLM since then. Would be interesting but know of none around here. The whole Mass either way is beautiful and a wonderful prayer and worship ❤

Thank you Dr. MARSHALL. A very informative video. I attend both Tradional and Novus Ordo Masses. I love the reverence in the Traditional Mass. However I feel more connected to God when I hear the prayers in English and see the priests gestures.. The Novus Order Masses I attend are very reverant. In the Tradional Masses one can get distracted more easily with the Latin. There are very few Tradional Masses said where I live. I have to travel far to attend regularly which is not easy as I am elderly. A beautiful Mass can be seen on EWTN. There is room for both Masses in our amazing Blessed Catholic faith. Please don't knock the Novus Ordo Mass. God Bless Dr. MARSHALL

In the N.O. Mass the priest and congregation say the Confiteor together, as group. At the Latin Mass, the priest says the prayers at the foot of the altar, not even attempting to approach God until he has confessed his sins. Making a profound bow, he says the Confiteor, asking the congregation to pray that God will forgive his sins and deem him worthy to approach the altar. The altar boy, on our behalf, responds with a prayer asking God's forgiveness for the priest. The altar boy then bows down very low and prays the Confiteor on our behalf, and the priest responds by praying that God will forgive us. The priest at the traditional Mass has more prayers of supplication, and seems to display more humility that at the N.O. Mass.

I grew up with the Ordinary Form of the Mass. I really love the Extraordinary Form, with the exception of the repeated reading of the Reading and the Gospel (in Latin then in English). I really love the increased readings of the current Liturgical Calendar. I love the Catholic faith. I love attending both forms of the Masses. God bless! ⚜️

@michaelverde4844, it does seem tedious at first. The Last Gospel is a powerful Exorcism prayer, and seals us all with the extra grace and protection. 😊

@@shiremom4 Oh, no, I like the closing Gospel. I meant the reading in Latin then in the vernacular. The prolonged silence and the chants in the TLM are a tremendous draw. Such a great experience when I go to our FSSP TLM in our Diocese. ❤️‍🔥

The Latin liturgy was effectively a private devotion of priests. As this liturgy took place, everyone had their own private prayers to attend to. My Dad had a missal filled with twenty holy cards that noted the deaths of family and friends known to my Dad. For him, every liturgy was a recollection of the dead persons whom he knew and loved. My Mom, meanwhile, recited her rosary. She was a member of the Blue Army and was persuaded that every rosary was being used by our Lady of Fatima as the fuel necessary for the conversion of Russia. Both of my parents were unsettled by the changes that were slowly introduced into their Sunday Mass. They were "unsettled" because the changes interrupted their own private devotions that they had been using for twenty or thirty years. No one told them what Prof. Baldovin has told us in this lecture. Had they known, I do believe that they would have whole-heartedly embraced the new rites. Prof. Baldovin (at the 40 minute mark) asks whether the dwindling of Mass attendance in the late 70s was due to the introduction of the new liturgical reforms. I, in contrast with Prof. Baldovin, would allow that the reforms did disrupt the private prayers of Catholics like my parents. Furthermore, the changes were made made in lock-step manner--no parish was to move ahead or stay behind the reforms MANDATED for any given Sunday. Many priests were even resentful of the entire process--and rightly so! They had no idea where the reforms were coming from and where they were going. Here again, if they had a chance to hear and to digest Prof. Baldovin's lecture, they would have become enthusiastic advocates of the liturgical reforms. As it was, most priests did what their bishop mandated with a "blind obedience." This should have been different. Only when "communion in the hand" was introduced was there a systematic attempt to see the logic and the necessity of this change. This would have been the time to allow two options: either receiving in the hand or kneeling before the priest and receiving on the tongue. But no, the powers to be wanted lock-step confomity to prevail. Thus, no attention was paid to the "readiness" of Catholics for this momentous psychological change. This is why, as I saw it unfold, the reformers themselves imposed the reforms in such a way as to violate the sensibilities of Catholics like my parents. Priests were not permitted to slow down the rate of change to suit the needs of their people. Priests were expected to give "homilies" based upon the readings of the Sunday. Nine out of ten priests had no idea how to do that. In my parish, Fr. McMonigle, who was 58 years old, continued to give his five-minute "inspirational story" for two full years after the requirement of "giving homilies" was announced. I admired him when he admitted that it took him two years to get himself ready to deliver his first "homily." He did it moderately well. The whole parish, sensitive to how difficult it was for someone sixty years old to change, gave him a spontaneous round of applause when he was finished. I joined in. No one had ever clapped during Mass in our church ever before. This, too, was an essential ingredient that expressed the gratitude of the people for Holy Cross Church their aging pastor. I expect that our Father in Heaven was clapping as well. JMJ Dr. Aaron Milavec, seminary professor for twenty-five years
