50/50 on Sundays, but only because the nearest TLM is two hours away. We consider ourselves “TLM only” and attend the NO only on weekends we are “in exile.” Moving is something we have discerned, but isn’t possible right now.

TLM when available. SSPX comes once a month max, some months not (like this month). Otherwise we go to a Greek Catholic or relatively reverent NO. Things are a bit more conservative here in Hungary, I think. I have never seen an altar girl, and "Extraordinary" ministers are rare.
@jimbus4096 Жыл бұрын
We go to a Novus Ordo. I think the priest would go for a TLM, and I'm not sure if it's the laity that stops him here, or if it's the bishop. It tends to retain quite a few of the traditional elements mentioned here, such as facing away from the people, the silent prayers, and the use of latin for some prayers. He does chant most of the prayers, and sometimes the Gospel. No altar girls. Encourages receiving on the tongue while kneeling, but hasn't mandated it.

Fr. Mike might be on the thumbnail on the NO side, but I learned from him why ad orientum was such a big deal. He’s actually the one who got me started learning about TLM because he presented it in such a simple and compelling way.

I was taking masters classes at Notre Dame University in Indiana and studying the Liturgy from a priest well known for his modern song used in the Novus Ordo Mass. When he spoke of the TLM he was very critical of the 'silliness', his words not mine, of the TLM with regard to garments, prayers, etc. He even showed us an old black and white film of the Latin Mass while making fun of the movements of the altar servers and other things. I knew in my heart of hearts that everything he was teaching and criticizing was wrong. It was because of this that I sought out the TLM in my diocese and fell in love with it. My faith life has greatly increased since then. Dr. Taylor Marshall has a great explanation of the differences of these Liturgies. Lots to think and pray about.

I attend the FSSP in Irving, TX. (Mater Dei). The thing that bothers me most about the sign of peace at the NO Mass is that it comes right after consecration -where all focus should be on the altar. When they break and shake hands, kiss, talk to the people around them,etc it takes the focus completely away from Christ and puts it on man. I would have gently landed that point. @@deec7124 You probably in a conservative area. There are many churches I've been to in my life, pre-TLM, where I had to play "hide and seek" with Jesus in the Tabernacle. In Springfield Mo. In Belleville, Il diocese. In Virginia. It used to be more common, one bishop specifically put them all back since a previous bishop had removed them from the altar area. I've seen it behind the side of the altar, in a side room, in a separate section at the back of the church. I never cared for those churches. I'm not Catholic, so my knowledge on this topic is basically limited to what's explained in this video. But just from hearing this, the Latin Mass sounds way better to me. Maybe its just my personality type (quiet, reserved, don't wanna stick out like a sore thumb, etc) but anytime I've ever been at some sort of event, whether its a family gathering or a rock concert, I always prefer to be quiet and observe whatever is going on. The one concert I've been to in my life I was literally just annoyed to hear people screaming constantly while the music was being played, vs me just wanting to sit quietly and actually hear what I paid for... well ok I didn't pay for it, I was invited, but you get my point. Catholicism seems so much more complex and deep compared to other versions of Christianity, that the thought of random normies participating in these ceremonies just strikes me as odd. Its like, if I want to hear what Joe down the street has to say I'll ask him when I'm out walking the dog, not while I'm in church trying to learn something important. If you're in class, you don't want the teacher to step aside and let a student conduct the lecture, so how on earth did someone think it makes sense to do that in regards to peoples' souls and honoring God. At least that's how it appears to me as someone that's a total outsider, but the Novus Ordo thing just seems a bit... disrespectful, tacky... like it doesn't respect boundaries. Its like when you talk to a stranger and they get too personal if that analogy makes sense. Plus... anything with the words "new" and "order" in it... Makes me wanna grab my tin foil hat... On a side note, as a non-Catholic, I've commented here quite a bit and you guys always respond with great replies and make me feel welcome here, so I wanted to say thank you to everyone. I'm enjoying learning more about Catholicism, its really beautiful

I have started attending Traditional Latín Mass “Tridentine Rite “ at about 2 years ago. It happened to be after the wonderful gift , our Lord Jesus Christ, was glowing in the Eucharist Particles!🤴❤️🙏 During pandemic 😷 we had daily Mass outside the Church ⛪️ and I didn’t know there was another kind of Holy Mass, but I was thought to receive Jesus in my tongue always. Therefore, I have used a water bottle cup and placed in my hand and from there, with my tongue, I put it in my mouth. Then, I have stored the water bottle cup in a clean sandwich bag to keep using it. Time passed and we were allowed again to receive Jesus in the tongue! I have stored the sandwich bag inside a small purse. And one day , I was sprinkling Holy water to my Sacramentals. I have learned that is good to do often, regardless of being already blessed. Then I thought that I would also sprinkle Holy water on the water cup I used to receive Jesus. And then, I have seen Eucharist Particles all over the sandwich bag. And there was a bigger one and glowing beautifully! I have told my Rosary group friends about it. I took pictures and took of the Eucharist Particles and shared them with the group. Then, one of them told me to give them to a Priest. By this time, I was attending Traditional Latín Mass already and I have given the Eucharist Particles to a Priest. Dr. Marshall, I think is important for people to know that our Lord Jesus Christ is Truly Present, Body, Blood 🩸, Soul and Divinity. We must console our Lord Jesus Christ because of people receiving Holy Communion in the hand 🖐️. Eucharist Particles are falling to the floor and people are trampling our Lord Jesus Christ! 🤴✝️ Jesus, I Trust in You! 🤴❤️🙏😇

I am glad I found this podcast a year later; it provides the context that none of the traditional catholics commenting could explain. 1. The vernacular is awesome as the Mass can be celebrated by all nations - this follows the great commission Mt28 and also the formation of the universal Church at Pentecost. 2. The singular focus of the Crucifix above the altar of Sacrifice is such that ALL the people are looking up to the crucified Christ, while the priest, in persona Christi, is elevating the Body and Blood of Himself looking at all the people present. In our Archdiocese of Cape Town, most tabernacles are visible to the laity in a prominent place allowing for private prayer. 3. The “manuble” is not relevant; Christ dispensed with the towel after washing the feet. 4. Penitential Rite 9x Kyrie vs 6x is irrelevant. The intention to ask for mercy is still fulfilled. 5. The 3-year lectionary cycle makes so much more of the Word accessible in the Liturgical Calender, while still observing the primary liturgical and santorical cycle annually. 6. Silence, I agree there can be more, yet when the priest, in persona Christi, offers prayers to God the Father, He is offering them with the people - and the people should be actively attentive and participating. Good sound, when used well, is not offensive. 7. Concelebration is a red herring in this podcast, it seldom occurs in daily or Sunday liturgy. 8. Why should the laity do less when they are invited to the Wedding Feast of the Lamb? In all Sunday or Solemnity Masses, the offertory includes the bread and wine as an offering of our labour. And the Sign of Peace, offered in persona Christi, and in these same words, can be offered between laity in a sincere and dignified way. I have yet to experience “groovy”. And as the disciples asked “Lord, teach us to pray”, why then should the Lord’s prayer be limited to the priest? And the readings or psalm, were these only bread by the priests in the synagogues? Jesus, who was not a priest, read and taught. And when the lay person concludes the reading, do they say “ The word of Christopher, or Anne, or Marshall? Absolutely not. But The Word of the Lord. For the Lord uses the lips of human beings to proclaim His Word. 9. In the NO, laity receive on the tongue or the hand. Do our hands really need to be consecrated? For it is not what goes into the mouth that is unclean, but that which comes out of the mouth. And yes, evil persons may try to conceal the Blessed Sacrament and n the hand for ulterior motives, but a vigilant Priest, Deacon, EMHC or lay person should take action immediately. 10. Ite Missa, est. Yes the Mass continues as all Catholics should become what they receive and take Christ into all the world. +Pax Christi

I’ve been to Novus Ordo masses where everything is proper, I was raised in a parish like this. However, I’ve also visited other churches where things are bordering on sacrilegious and are very irreverent; from the placement of the tabernacle to the sorts of music used to all other aspects of the mass. The lack of uniformity has enabled those who wish to invoke novelty to do so, whereas those who wish to preserve tradition and reverence have been forced to the sidelines or out of the picture entirely.

I'm a cradle Catholic who love the imperfect Novus Ordo Mass where I can receive our Lord in the Holy Eucharist with a contrite heart and ask the Lord to see through the imperfections of myself, the congregation, the priests, the lectors, the altar servers, the lay ministers and the mass as a whole. It is at the Novus Ordo that I am always reminded of the love of God and therefore Love Him above all and love our neighbors as our selves. A symbolic representation of the vertical and horizontal beam of the cross and the 2 most important law given to us by Christ Jesus. One cannot exist without the other. And so after the mass there is always that peace that I try to live. To understand others and not much to be understood. To see the beam in my eye and not be judgemental of others. To serve others than seek to be served. Yet I'm imperfect so I ask God for forgiveness when I have failed.

Some other differences I've noticed and appreciate. It's quiet before Mass with no gossiping and most all arrive at least 30 min early for rosary. No singing during communion, silence as opposed to distracting song. Generally much more reverent. Respectful in dress & kids not eating cheerios running toy cars behind your back or running in the ailes. Hands folded while in line for holy communion. No one leaves early and most stay over even if just a couple minutes. No clapping ever as there was clapping at the crucifixion.

Sounds like you would enjoy my Church, which is Novus Ordo, as you described the reverence we have at our Masses to a tee. We do have beautiful music tho, and I actually like it. I think it adds a beauty and sacredness. We do have Masses without music tho. I don't think it has anything to do with the type of Mass, but the Pastor of the Church and how he chooses to conduct things. We need more good Pastors!

I started attending traditional mass in 2020. This Sunday I visited a NO mass and had high blood pressure the whole time. Although it was relatively reverent. No holy water, no cross near or on the altar. Instead a bottle of disinfectant ON THE AlTAR TABLE! So little prayes, the credo without mention of Jesus descent into hell, or of the saints, or of the forgiveness of sins. I will definitely stick to my beloved traditional mass.

Dr. Marshall, since the awful Novus Ordo was thrust on us, there are more people than ever before who are ready to personally experience the Traditional Latin Mass and your video is the best means to briefly, but effectively, guide them in that respect. The grace of God has heightened the receptivity of many for such instruction as you provide here. There's a lot that you tell them, but without overloading them. Thanks to your succinct presentation, that is less than 30 minutes in length, newbies can intelligently follow and spiritually profit from their first TLM. May these first timers also note that their ''active participation'' as laity is not external, but internal, freeing them from interruptions, mandatory responses and mutual exchange of gestures, that distract the soul's response to what the Holy Ghost wants to impart to it and intrude on the solace and encouragement that Jesus Eucharistic desires the soul to fully feel.
@KMF3 Жыл бұрын
Yes that's a wonderful distinction between external and internal participation. And the preference for internal participation. I never understood that when I first came to the traditional Latin Mass😢. Of course I understand it now but in the beginning it was rather foreign to me. Which honestly is pretty sad to say isn't it?
@hawk622is306 Жыл бұрын
@@KMF3 The TLM is the most perfect combination of corporate and individual Worship. Paradoxically, the unchangeable TLM provides the best opportunity for our spontaneous response to Jesus Eucharistic during Mass and particularly at Communion time, because while the priest celebrant is standing before the Altar, with his back to us, and the people in the pews are occupied with their own thoughts and prayers, we are virtually left alone to give our undivided attention to God so we can gratefully receive every blessing He is about to bestow on us. While the Mass proceeds as if on autopilot, our souls stir with spiritual activity never before attained. When Mass is finished, we truly go in peace.

As a German, I find it quite interesting how big the Impact of the papal decree was.. In Germany we almost only celebrate Novus Ordo Masses. We have a few exceptions (for special masses outside of the "normal" sunday celebration). In almost all german churches, the high altar has been either removed or modified. Funny enough, I came to the realisation, that we actually have a sort of hybrid between both. I just find it very astounding how many different Masses there are, and how they are implementen very differently in different countries and cultures.

As always, Dr Taylor, you are an excellent teacher! And now you've hit one of my biggest problems with the Novus Ordo - #8. They only ask families. Us single persons coming in to celebrate a Mass - no matter how well-dressed we are, or aren't - are always ignored. If we're all supposed to be One, then why are only families asked?! I've experienced this is multiple dioceses in 5 states. And then there is always my childhood memory of when that first started - my mother and I walked in , and the usher grabbed my mother's arm and said in a gravel voice - "You and the girl wanna bring up the Gifts?" My mother, a cradle Catholic, *knew* that no one but the priest should touch that AND she also had no idea of what he was talking about!!! But, again - I was part of a family group, so there you go.
@harvey364 Жыл бұрын
It's nice that you'd like to help bring up the gifts when you attend an Ordinary Form Mass. All you need to do is volunteer -- most parishes welcome that. You can ask an usher if they need anyone to help with the presentation of gifts.
@charflorida5433 Жыл бұрын
Harvey is correct. You can volunteer. I think it is because they want 2 or more to present the gifts, and families are the easiest to ask.

@@benedictchinweuba5820 Respectfully, Latin IS the Universal language of the Roman Catholic Church and as such Latin should be used at all Masses all over the Earth. The Latin mass was “Canonized” centuries ago and having different languages is a direct result of rebellion and division in the Church to this day. See the Protestants (specifically Anglican, Lutheran, Episcopalian, etc), and certain Orthodox Churches to this present time. It is a known fact that Vatican 11 incorporated the vernacular to appease all of these “religions”! That is why Non Catholics participated in that Council and all of the “Synods” since. All of this was done in the name of “ecumenism”! The results are obvious- catastrophic to the Catholic Church. It is not our strength to be divided in the “One Holy and Apostolic Roman Catholic Church”.
