Does he say that? Wow. As a German I never saw a full episode, just from time to time short clips, mostly if it's shown on other KZbinrs' channels. I don't like him and I don't like the show. I don't like the sensational use of mentally ill people, even then when they don't want to be in his show. This was the worst, when I saw how one or two ran and just wanted out of the studios and the cameras didn't just follow but hunted them. If I were brought into this show under false expectations or even forced by my parents when I'd be a minor, I would never forgive them. Although I saw stuff I thought he was right, or that he helped someone but the negative stuff outweighs these few moments far too much. Whatever, he for sure is not not judgmental. Nobody can be this totally. I work voluntarily with people with mental health issues and similar and it's very hard to stay objective. Since my work is online and I can choose who I talk to it's easier for me. But even then, sometimes I just don't want, for example if someone is an abuser and thinks they're the victims, or something like this. And I would never trust someone who says they're always objective, I only trust some individuals if they say to me that they're objective about a specific topic. And I know many professionals and no one of these I trust would ever say that, at least not to me.

@@Taureanfitness Dr Phil is, to me, a grifter. He will do anything for 💰. He and his son run Doctor's on demand, an expensive therapy system which connects patients to therapists. Biggest problem is that many are just councillors, not trained Medical Therapists. His wife has a major lifestyle and cosmetics programme. The only honest McGraw is the son who's a talented singer and guitarist. He refused all offers of promotion from his father. He wants it all to be his own work.

I find it interesting that Oprah, the women of great wisdom and deep intellectual thought, would support a man such as he. ( I was being facetious when it came to Oprah,BTW ) People take this man seriously and I find that irresponsible of the management of the Station; I wish they'd shut him down. He's slightly more dignified than "The Jerry Springer Show" ( is it still on the air?) however, I'm just one person with an opinion about him and not a corporate sponsor. The quickest way to cripple his show is by contacting his sponsors. Maybe someone can post a list of them and then we can do what our Founding FATHER'S and Mother's did; BOYCOTT. There is no treatment for some of the person's mental health issues, like personality disorders or delusional disorders. Treatment for the affected family members is possible, though.

Excellent analysis. My ex watched the show when we were together and it always bothered me, for many of the reasons you've mentioned. The one I noticed the most was how he couldn't deviate from the narrative. It was like he had a script in his mind, he had a conclusion he was leading to, and like he was a director of a play guiding the other performances where he wanted them to go. The more people tried to deviate and actually talk about their experience or the more (understandably) frustrated they'd get by his redirection of the narrative, the more bullying he'd become. He'd flat out tell them to stop talking, and then publicly shame them on national TV for their anger/uncooperative nature/lack of agreeableness, or use weaponized psychology such as throwing a term like "emotional confusion" as an insult to "put them in their place". It seems like a form of narcissistic abuse (ie demanding narcissistic supply, blaming/shaming/belittling those uncooperative with providing it, they react negatively, the narcissist feels validated that the other person is clearly the problem). The whole show and his attitude feels so exploitative and damaging.

MSW student-we were just talking about Dr Phil in my advanced practice skills class and you’re absolutely right, we discussed how Dr. Phil is a great example of how NOT to treat clients. I think the episodes that enrage me the most are the ones where he brings people with obvious delusional disorders and turns them into spectacles where the entire audience is just laughing at them. He doesn’t even address the disorder or explain delusions at all.

I was on the Dr. Phil show and he humiliated me and did not ask about my background, I am diagnosed with CPTSD and am a Trauma survivor. I really believed in him, and that he could help me, and instead, he made everything look like it was my fault without getting to the root of the problem. I felt like I was fighting for my life. He is still showing me on the show which was aired 12 years ago. It still is humiliating and I do not know what to do. He really is terrible. He keeps the trauma alive and he puts himself in the best light. He cut off a lot of the things that I said in the show so that he looked good. After the show, I was dismissed like garbage and they had nothing else to say to me.

Somewhere around 10 or 15 years ago, a friend of mine appeared on Dr. Phil's show. She reported later that her appearance was actually edited to make her look stupid or ill-informed about the topic, which had to do with child custody issues. They would preserve an out-of context stunned look on her face, but eliminate or severely edit her answers to questions to the point of being misleading. I suspect that dishonest editing is also a big piece of this show. Only including what he wants people to say, how he wants people to look. And cutting out anything which is at odds with his preconceived notions or overall agenda.

People forget to recognize that THIS IS A pure entertainment, a SHOW and only A SHOW. People who go on these kind of entertainment shows expect fairness, advice, etc. Im sure they get a free meal, hotel and travel costs if not more to be used on a show as “ puppets “. Im sure they sign documents as to how their appearance may or may not be altered to fit and suit producers agenda. I had an offer to appear in small claim court on so called tv show and I have declined. I would not put my face on tv to be used like this for no money. It appears that they have the whole “machine” of people looking up court cases in small court claims and contact plaintiffs to appear on their show. You would be surprised how many people would go on tv just for a chance to be on tv and have producers to pay for their free weekend in LA. People like your friend do that without thinking of consequences and than they complain that they have been humiliated.

That's it, you just earned my full respect. I get so incredibly frustrated by his anti-mental health exploitation of truly sick people. What he did with Britney and Shelley Duvall was the opposite of what should have been done. He played into Shelley's delusions during an episode of worsened schizophrenia (previously diagnosed), and exploited her during a time that she needed help the most, and I think we all know what he did to Britney during her challenging period when she was in the hospital no less.

You really nailed it--identifying all the distorted and dysfunctional ways he interacts with guests including his lack of empathy and neutrality. After randomly watching about 4-5 episodes I've found myself [as a counselor as well] quite disturbed by his approach and tactics. I've had a visceral response to some of the ways he really humiliates guests. There is nothing therapeutic about his approach. I've often wondered how those guests walk away feeling about themselves after being on that show. I really appreciate your direct, factual descriptions of behaviors of the people you review on your channel, as well as your transparency about how you feel about these folks. You do a great job of sharing that but also presenting a clear, concise and factual representation within your assessment

He can be so brutal it's hard to watch esp when you know how wrong & damaging this could be & likely is for those people. He gets sued quite often actually from what I've read incl his own employees he locked in a ballroom once & told them pyt their phones in baskets (to prevent filming). I have had a counselor get in my face, and it worked. It's what was needed.. But anymore someone confronting another person's bullshit is pretty much considered "bullying". Phil McGraw is Maury with a PhD. Several years ago, one of my friends from college was on the Rachael Ray Show. She had a rare eating disorder called Orthorexia, and she talked about it with Rachael Ray, whose background is in cooking. Anyway, after that, she received an appearance invitation from the Dr. Phil show. They wanted her to come on the show with her parents and siblings and rehash everything that they had already worked through in counseling and everything she had worked through and inpatient treatment for her eating disorder. At this point, she was almost 30 years old, and the Dr. Phil show wanted to bring her back on to discuss these issues she’d had in college. He wanted to HURT her family and publicly shame her for views. She turned down the invitation.

I will say that Dr. Phil in the early days of the show, there was actually some educational value and he got deeper into the psychology of his guests. The show was closer to actually being therapy. The thing is now, he's become kind of a Jerry Springer reality show in the sense there's very little depth, there's way more drama and it's basically a free for all in terms of the subjects they cover.

I think they looked at the Jerry Springer show and wanted to create something a little less dramatic but with a format that included people airing their dirty linen in public, because people want to watch that kind of thing. He certainly plays to the audience at the expense of the people on the stage. I found it most distressing when a man who had raped and abused his daughter over a long period was offered help, but the daughter who was obviously deeply traumatised was told that perhaps she could somehow get over it enough to have a relationship with her father and moreover, that was 'up to her'. I am sure that some people have been helped, but those with trauma such as the girl recently who repeatedly pretended to be pregnant and wished to give away her child in order to make contact with the outside world would, I suggest, have been further damaged by making this known to thousands of people. I find it interesting that in his office he is surrounded by photographs of himself.

When you mentioned control therapy, I remember that show being on and Phil McGraw said to one of his guests/clients, "It's my way or the highway. " when he was challenged by a quest. I turned that into a clinical setting and thought, no respectable psychological would ever say that to a client. I haven't watched that show since that day. A young man who was an alcoholic was on the show. He said alcohol was made available to him. I was not watching the show but stopped on the channel as the young man was “assisted” on stage by two huge men because he could not walk on his own. He was in tears, red faced, and so ill that an ambulance was in order. Later hearing that alcohol was offered…made me sick to my stomach. I feel they could have killed him.

Your thoughts on Dr Phil are understandable, as the show has implied ties to your own field. A big thing to remember is that "Dr Phil" is a tv show; the real therapist was Phil McGraw, who voluntarily gave up his license to practice and instead continued as a tv talk show host. The income potential for tv hosts is much larger than forensic psychologists. He took what he had to work with such as the Dr. title, the Texas attitude, the years of learning psychological lingo, his success at "reading" people as a jury consultant, and a friendship with Oprah and turned it all into a highly watched show. The thought that licensed therapists would take away lessons from a tv show is as scary as Gordon Ramsey providing management training to culinary students. (Edited to add this thought: In case anyone misunderstands this, the statement"provide education" Dr Phil refers to is aimed at the home audience, not the professionals.)

I feel he sensationalizes people's pain and exploits for profit. I realize that is a strong statement. He is off-putting to me on several levels. I don't see him as a "safe" person because of the way he responds to people's comments; right or wrong, I believe maintaining another persons dignity is crucial not just as a professional, but also as a human. Not to mention doctors from the public sector are annoying, scary, mean etc. My private psychiatrist understands my needs, what is happening to me, how awful I feel. This is the exact problem-- if you say you are a psychologist (practically a reality TV demigo, to themselves AND their fans) and ask broken, wounded, possibly suicidal or addicted people, as they are plummeting towards their "bottom" as it is, and you tell them they can be treated like royalty for a few days and be a star on tv as to boot... Well, there is NO WAY you will get a bunch of polite refusals like, “no, thank you, I'm headed to Paris that week for a stay at my pied a terre-- Ta!" No-- not a chance! And he certainly isn't a perfectionist, but I think he may want to be! From just listening to him, you realize that he has given a perfect 10 to his wife, his sons and daughters-in-law, their children, his house, seems like every aspect of his life is, well, perfect!! He admits, "I'm not God but I'm here to help you." But, is he being sincere? I'm wondering if we'll get any reaction from Dr. Phil? A friendly reaction would be very nice to see from both sides of the fence!

@@kukalakana I think Dr Grande said in an earlier video that Dr. Phil didn't have a current license. So while he still may have his PhD, if he's not a legally practicing clinician, it could be a reason not to refer to him as a doctor in a clinical context. Very impressive analysis. I saw a disturbing episode where a guest told him she had cancer in her liver. McGraw called it liver cancer but she correctly disagreed. McGraw chuckled disparagingly, likely to secure his dominance and position as an expert. It all seemed like bad therapy to me.

Another great analysis. Back in 2004, I went with a girlfriend who was a huge Dr. Phil fan. His program is "show biz" and that is how he should be viewed - for entertainment purposes. I cannot believe a psychologist would employ the same methods in a private session with a client.

I think this is my favourite video you have ever done, Dr. Phil is an opportunist, I don’t think he has any desire to help people, I’m not a therapist by any stretch of the imagination, but watching a careful and thoughtful therapist such as yourself call Dr. Phil out was fun to watch, and hopefully it will make people who are genuinely seeking help for their problems think twice about going on the Dr. Phil show.

I guess he didn't like being approached from behind because he reprimanded her. In one show I heard his wife say to a guess/participant on the phone that if she quits she won't get paid (something along those lines). When I watch the Dr Phil shows I often get the feeling that it has been staged...like with some 'wrestling matches'. I suspect the whole show became a 'charade' of some sorts. It is all very sad and Psychologists and Counsillors should distance themselves from it. Well done, dr Grande. (From South Africa)
