@@monicapyle I'm not sure I'd be too keen to take his help either after the tone of that interview. I feel Phil didn't want the hassle of a very damaged patient, obviously didn't care to try 100% and even understand the depth but HAD to keep up appearances since he decided to air that trainwreck to millions of folks that, imo, made him look really unrelatable to so many. There's no way he would be willing to review his actions over the decades and change for the betterment of others around him. To do so would require him to call into question if he was wrong about something he said/did. What he is doing has worked well for him, and as long as he isn't getting in trouble with the law for his behavior, he's not about to change. He reminds me a little of Donald Trump, always believing he is right no matter what. Dr. Phil simply has far more intelligence than Donald Trump, but comes off as being just as low class. I think some families in this world would refer to him as "new money," and they would be right, he got rich, but doesn't truly have the refinement of social graces despite his best efforts of trying to convince those around him and at home that he is cultured and refine, if just another "good ol' country boy."

Sadly someone who lacks empathy can't just magically decide to have empathy and see their wrongs. People who lack empathy are a lost cause in this world and simply just shouldn't be engaged with. They exploit others and use them as tools. My ex did it to me for years then one day said "I have no need for you anymore" it was one of the grossest things ever. These ppl only care about using others as a tool to benefit them and if there's no more "use" for you in their eyes they devalue and discard. Best to just not engage because they never change.

I completely agree with your assessment of Phil McGraw’s strategy, and “embarrassment therapy “ is a good term for it. I think he plays to the audience’s hunger for shock and disgust. His how is in the same category as Hoarders, My 500 Pound Life, and those survivalist shows. But, it differs in that he sees himself as brilliant, much sought after psychologist with all the answers. The public treatment of Sinead O'Connor tends to be horrible in general. She's a person who both suffers from bipolar and has experienced significant trauma, yet because of her talent and fame her worst times have been put on display for the world to see, and ignorant and judgmental people have dragged her through the mud. One of the most difficult parts of bipolar is coming out of a manic episode into an overwhelming sense of shame and "Oh my God, what have I done?" That in turn feeds the depressive element, and around and around it goes. It's bad enough to go through that in the view of family and friends; I can only imagine how awful it would be to do so in the full view of the millions of strangers, many of whom feel entitled to put in their two cents' worth.

Thank you, Dr. Grande, for stating that Shelley Duvall seemed vulnerable in the interview. That was what made me feel so uncomfortable with it. It seemed like Dr. Phil had all the power, and Shelley was psychologically unsafe with him. He came off as a bully not a caring person who had Shelley's best interests at heart.

Great assessment Dr. Grande! I also didn’t like how Dr Phill Interviewed the girl who was held hostage in chains for 10 plus years and kept asking her sexual questions such as “what were you wearing!?” He is so harsh and a bully . He should have stayed in the legal field (whatever title he had there) lol We love you Dr Grande!

And the poor girl who killed the mother who abused her and forced her to live in a wheelchair. McGraw is an ass. I was surprised to see him on the Oprah show many years ago. He didn’t seem kind or professional way back then

Years later and this still hurts seeing her that way. Your conclusion, especially, gives her a voice that she didn’t have at that moment.

I have no doubt he has changed many lives, but has the change always been for the better? Has the changes he made hurt some people, or have they always been helpful? I don't think they have always been good changes.

He went on and on because he enjoyed humiliating her for ratings. That's what he does! That's why I stopped watching him over a decade ago. He's a pompous jerk.

Totally. I've never liked him. He's a creepy, condescending prick. A bully, to be more exact. He's completely devoid of empathy and ethics. What kind of actual therapist would go out of their way to humiliate and shame their " patient"- and on national television???!! I was shocked to find out last year that the "Dr." Phil show is actually still a thing. Exploitative, amoral garbage. I mean, the Jerry Springer show was also a circus, but Springer at least had the decency to be transparent about that. McGraw strikes me as a special type of phoney.

Ugh. I remember this interview. It made me feel very uncomfortable. Despite her less than clear state of mind, it appeared McGraw blindsided Ms. Duvall with his intrusive questioning. I really have a hard time with that guy. 😒 So glad you addressed this. 💕👍🏼💕 excellent video.
