Heh! I do own a letter opener- a gift from a friend; I wouldn't have purchased one. However, without thinking about it, I open letters on my way back in from the mailbox, using my built-in letter opener... my right-hand index finger. And then I see the letter opener... Too late. Oy.

I grew up with my mother using her good china and table linens for dinner every week after church. She always said, "What's the point of having beautiful things if you never use them?" She never worried about my brother and me using these fragile items. She felt like it was an important learning experience for us, and at the end of the day, it was "just stuff" and her family was more important. It's a valuable lesson that applies to so many areas of life. Loved this video! ♥️

JodiLaRae I agree! My mother-in-law (who was from Germany) taught me this. My seven children (six of whom are boys) have grown up with our wedding china used everyday. Yes, it breaks. But it is replaceable. And one benefit that I have noticed is that my children do not feel uncomfortable when dining out or at other people’s homes, as far as using nicer things.

I grew up with all kinds of china and silver used at every dinner (candles too). It really rubbed off on me. I have lots of different patterns and use them all throughout the week. Even a burger or hot dog tastes better on a nice plate, lol. My dad didn't like paper napkins (or other disposable stuff) and that rubbed off on me also. We always use cloth napkins, it is really no bother at all and better for the planet too. My brother is the same, you really carry these traditions that you learn at home into your own home. Its great to use the nice things you are lucky enough to have! I saw a you tuber re organize a closet and her wedding china (which I am sure she registered for and was gifted) was still in the boxes although they had been married for many years. Sadly, for thanksgiving she was at Costco buying a bunch of plastic plates and cutlery for the holidays. I don't get it.

I remember as a child, my family would take a Sunday drive. Anyone else remember this ritual? Sometimes, we would stop at a country inn restaurant to have dinner. It was so elegant! White tablecloths and napkins, proper place settings, and even finger bowls! I remember how captivated I was by the formality. I still love dining formality but rarely experience it these days due to outside influences. (Bad company really does corrupt good character.) When my grandchildren first came along, while they were still small enough to be in a high chair, I employed the finger bowl concept to clean them up after a meal. I would bring a large bowl of warm water mixed with a little bit of soap to their high chair tray and helped them wash their hands in it. They were mesmerized by the experience and I think it got their little hands cleaner than just using a wash cloth.

We use delicate floral fine bone china every day for every meal. It’s all completely mismatched, collected one or two pieces at a time, from goodwill/junk stores. Beautiful teacups and saucers, they break sometimes, but I don’t worry about it. I can find them at estate sales for a dollar. Sometimes the men in the house don’t like it, but there’s also a set of rustic wooden dinnerware they can use if they like. Every day is an elegant day. It’s other-worldly. Visitors think I’m a little bit crazy.

Bleached white by the hot sun. When they are starched and iron they are very stiff. I also have beautiful Italian tableclothes and napkins. Jennifer, I HAVE TO ADMIT I AM GUILTY! I love nice tablecloths, china, letter openers, you name it! I have discovered that my 60-hour work week is a major reason for my lack of being a better homemaker. I wish I could work an 8-hour day and come home, but unfortunately as an employee in the medical field, it isn't likely to happen. I was an English literature major before I switched over to nursing. I long for the days when I could spend a few hours reading and sipping hot tea. My friends in college thought I was a nut case because my idea of fun was to go to a bookstore that had a cafe and stay for 5-6 hours reading and studying. Sadly, I haven't done that in years and it makes me sad. Still, I love your videos and I hope one day I can incorporate some of your beautiful suggestions into my life!!!!!!

Regina I do think you shouldn’t wait. You can incorporate one or two of Jeniffer’s ideas like using beautiful plates and china. in fact brewing tea shouldn’t take that long.. you’ve worked so hard you deserve a beautiful moment to ease and relax and you’ll see that your remaining evening will turn out more beautiful. pardon me, not trying to lecture you here.. however I can’t agree more with Jennifer.. having practised most of her ideas myself in my life has made my own really enjoyable and filled with gratitude though some tragic things have taken place in my 55 years of life. Kuddos to you Regina.. nursing is indeed a hard job that deserves my putting off my hat to you 🙏🏽🥰

I own: -One teacup -Nice clothes worn on a daily basis (many are handmade by me!) -Luxurious bath products (if Lush counts) -working on my posture! -classic books, but they are behind cupboard doors because I don’t like the look of bookshelves-they are so messy. I am currently reading Little Women! I don’t own: -A letter opener -A fountain pen/really nice pen -A set of teacups (I do own one!) -Nice dinner plates (we have one set of white Corelle dishes for everything) -A tablecloth -Cloth napkins Guess I’m not as elegant as I thought. We are minimalists with a clean, Scandinavian style-not Victorian at all.

It’s absolutely possible to improve your penmanship at any age. One way to get a prettier print is to slant your script ever so slightly rightwards. Another tip is to aim for rounder formation of your vowels. I know that doesn’t sound like a lot, but small changes do make an appreciable difference. Go for it, Jennifer! And as always, thanks for posting.

I agree, my dad is a testament to improving penmanship as I recall asking him how he has such beautiful handwriting. He told he had a moment that he was determined to improve his penmanship and practiced everyday, the result is elegant writing that I can't think of anyone with a more clearer and stylized writing. It's the little things that can create such a dramatic result.

I love your comment about posture!!! You mentioned some wonderful benefits I totally agree with you, however, as a Pilates and Yoga teacher I emphasize the benefits of posture daily to my students and subscribers. By standing tall and in proper alignment the muscles required to do so are strengthened toning the abdominal muscles which support the back making it stronger. Strong abdominal muscles help relieve back pain of which 80% of people will suffer from at some point in their lifetime. Proper posture helps you to breathe more efficiently, this allows you to tone and strengthen the lungs, all the muscles involved in breathing and in turn allows you to draw more oxygen in which is key to overall good health and mental clarity. Breathing efficiently also lets you tap into the parasympathetic nervous system and it reduces the effect of fight or flight in your body so you are not stressed out:-) I just get really excited about good posture!!! Thank you so much for mentioning it Jennifer.

What a fun video Jennifer! Your content never ceases to interest me-I don’t know where you find your inspiration BUT I truly enjoy it! Thank you so always encouraging us to use our best. It really makes the day more enjoyable. I don’t have a letter opener (I’m the barbarian 😆) but I love good penmanship, I often get compliments on my penmanship, it makes for a nice conversation and it makes my husband chuckle when people say “her writing looks like a font” he’s heard it for years now, and it makes me feel good. Using your best has been something I have been doing now for 6 years and my favorite thing about doing this is that it is rubbing off on my family - every meal feels special and my daughter loves “setting the table” which I hope instills a love for meal time for her. Lastly, a ten item wardrobe is a game changer- truly I believe it has made these last few months of uncertainty feel manageable since it creates a healthy sense of self and beauty first thing in the morning. Thank you again for all your encouragement. This is my favorite KZbin channel and for anyone who questions this channels intent, I promise you- it truly encourages beauty, not snobbery, just try her suggestions, get out of the yoga pants, put on a pretty blouse or cotton dress and you will understand what I’m saying. 🌷💕

I think I “decluttered” my letter opener! 🤦‍♀️ I used to use one regularly. Now I’ll keep my eyes open for a new one. 😉 I’m pleased to report that, thanks to reading your book many years ago, my family does enjoy nice dishes, cloth napkins, pretty clothes, etc. on a daily basis. Whenever guests seem surprised that I’m offering them the use of something so “fancy,” it almost confuses me, because it has become so natural to me. Ha - that reminds me of the last time I traveled to visit my parents. They directed me to their cupboard of cups and glasses to select one for my water, and I delightedly chose a beautiful crystal water goblet and continued using it for the rest of my visit. Afterward, my dad laughed and said something that made me realize he thought it was bizarre that I would casually use the goblet for water, since they only use it for holiday dinners. 😂 Anyway, GOOD FOR YOU, Jennifer, practicing handwriting. It is so worth it. ✍🏼

I always use my letter opener. It's so much easier on my hands & nails. I don't own a fountain pen, unless I still have my mother's. If I do, it's been in storage for nearly 30 years. 😔 I do use table linens on my small, but beautiful table. I tend to eat off my lap in front of the TV these days. But when my things are available, I change them & my centerpieces monthly, according to the seasons and holidays. For now, these things have been in storage, out-of-state for two years. 😔 Nice dishes, again in storage. But yes, I'd save them for special occasions. Clothing... In the winter, I live in soft, plush lounge wear at home. But all are presentable & pretty enough, I don't mind being seen in them. In the summer, it's dresses. Usually dresses that have been culled from my wardrobe, due to a light stain or a small hole. Usually, the imperfections are not terribly visible, and only known to me. Most people think I dress nicely. 😄 The only remaining item I can remember from the list are tea cups. All I've ever owned go with my nicest set of dishes - my mother's wedding gift from 1954, I believe. Feminine and beautiful, but never used, and again, sadly stored away for nearly 30 years. A long story goes with why so many of my things have been stored away for so long. It's personal and I won't go into it here. Suffice it to say if I can ever get out of my current rental situation, I intend to unpack and enjoy everything again. That will be like a lifetime of Christmases! 🥰

My girls love to set a formal table with flowers and candles. They also use the napkin folding techniques that they learned in Connoisseur Kids!

I have a book that is 200 years old called Emmeline the Orphan of the Castle written by Charlotte Smith. My mom had the Huntington Library restore it about 20 years ago since it is a keepsake. Anyways, we are a homeschool family and this very old book became our read aloud. The vocabulary and sentence structure is very complicated! But it has been nice to read from this old book and not just deem it too precious to ever crack open.

Your advice reminds me so much of a Dear Ann Landers letter from years ago. The man wrote in about his much-loved wife who had recently died. When he was going through her things he found a beautiful slip in her drawers wrapped in tissue that she had never worn. What a waste -- she never enjoyed wearing this lovely item of clothing. What good did it do her sitting in a drawer? When we save things for the "special" times and events in our lives, they have a way of never coming. We should enjoy what we have now.

Dear Jennifer, it feels like you are reading my mind. I watched this video in my living room and right in front of me is a cupboard I inherited from my late grandmother (an elegant lady indeed, who always wore a beautiful hat, when she left the house). In the cupboard, there is a gorgerous china (that she painted herself) she left for me and the tea cups and pretty plates are literally stearing me in the eyes! I suppose it is time to be brave and give them some good use ☕️ Thank you so very much for constant inspiration and enjoyment💗

Love this list. I am such a minimalist I really only have things that I use on the daily that are pretty boring. I may need to start switching those things up. Great gift ideas for Christmas and Birthdays. (I will say that during quarantine I have been wearing makeup most days as it makes me feel human and it reminded me that I like wearing it for myself, not just for other people. I deserve to use the best! I don't mind if I run out. That just means I enjoyed my expensive products.)

1. Letter opener, I have more than one, but I tend to use a kitchen knife, or whatever, depends on how important the letter. 2. Fountain pens . Used them all the time once, and a calligraphy set, nowadays I write very little ... 3. Nice China tea cups. Somehow we accumulated a very nice set of mugs, that are individual, but the same, and so the cups get used for serving pannacotta ... And on Christmas, Easter, and birthdays 4. Nice dinner plates, we use them all the time. We have some old chipped ones that are used in the microwave, and for odd things. 5. Nice table clothes. I have a lot of them, and a lot of them are wrong proprtions for our dinner table, that has unusual dimensions. But the veneer is thin, so I like to protect the table. 6. Cloth napkins mostly I use them in my bread basket. Some of them I just have two of. 7. Nice clothes daily ... Not nice dresses so much, or my better trousers 8. Actually I threw a lt of such stuff decluttering because it had gone bad, so yes I agree use it or give it away. 9. posture is good for breathing ... 10. Good old books ... There are so many new books I want to read. I used to reread certain books all the time

I do use a letter opener. Having worked in an office for many years I know the value of good, well-weighted letter opener! Regarding fountain pens ... when I was in 2nd grade (in the 50's) we were required to bring a refillable fountain pen to school along with a bottle of ink for our personal use. Using that fountain pen we were taught cursive writing. What many people don't know is that a fountain pen that a person uses regularly adapts to the user. It sets a slant at the tip according to how the user forms his/her letters and becomes a very personal item. If someone else were to attempt writing with the pen it would give an "awkward" feel. Ahh. Now I've shown my age. :-) Thank you for your lovely tips, Jennifer.

Can I add furniture to the list as well. My great grandma had a living room ( the parlor as she called it) that I sat in 1 time because I was being sneaky. I got to sit on the sofa but not the giant wingback chairs. The room didn't get use. It was her nice expensive room no one was allowed in. It was tragic to me. I think we should enjoy our homes and spaces. Never too late to improve penmanship, I'm doing the same💕😁

My friend keeps a basket of cloth napkins with napkin rings in a basket by the table, everyone picks their own for each meal. Of course ,there are favorites so there is a fun "who gets the elephant napkin ring game". When they are washed, she slips them back in the napkin rings and back in the basket, no folding. Also If you find older napkins at estate sales, get the larger sizes, the small ones aren't very helpful.

Good ides. It was very encouraging because I find I already do most of these anyhow. I got rid of my coral kitchenware when my last kid moved out and my beautiful pottery became everyday dishes and my China dishes for weekends along with proper silver ware, and always napkins and cloth linen. The letter opener will come out of my desk though. We do cloth hankies too. And when COVID struck I began reading through my classic book collection starting on letterA. I still have lots to go. My adult children tease me a little because my table do not have plastic containers on it. I like jam, yogurt etc in a nice container no cream carton on my table either. I think these things communicate care . I am ready to start working on the 10 item wardrobe. I have a long painful road to go there.

Going to buy the cursive book - always working on my handwriting and when I see someone that writes beautifully, I always try to incorporate something into my handwriting. Funny story about an elegant item I have and never use... I got these really pretty Christmas tea towels a couple years ago and they sat in a drawer, unused. The other day I made cinnamon raisin bread and since I'm trying to not use plastic wrap, a tea towel was the perfect thing to wrap it up, since it's bigger and nicer than my everyday dish towels. My husband walks into the kitchen and goes, "uhhh do you miss diapering or something because I see you put a Christmas diaper on the bread..."😆🤣

What a super video. I scored 6/10 of the list, but I no longer have a fountain pen nor cloth napkins. I am also guilty of not wanting to open special bathing products but I totally agree that they should be used and as you say, before they reach their use by date. My posture I am working on greatly as I have a back massage monthly loosen up areas of my back that have become knotted. My favourite of your list was No 3. I have always drunk tea out of a cup with a saucer, but I don’t mind coffee in a mug but chipped...oh no, if I spot anything chipped in my china cupboard, then it is straight into the bin. My mum always said that chipped china harbours germs and the same was said at Domestic Science College. They can’t both be wrong. Thank you for taking the time to put this video together.

In fact when I do go into my office, I pack my lunch, eat off of dishes and bring a pretty Tea towel to serve as my table cloth. Another thing I have started doing in the past couple of months is to drink my water from a nice glass instead of a water bottle. I find I drink more and it taste better. Another great video! 😊 A few years ago I began using the phrase "live the life you would like to read about" to make changes in my life. I began curating my life. Little things like those you mention here have made a huge difference in the way I see myself and how comfortable I feel in my own home. Using a letter opener gives one great satisfaction. Am I the only one who loves that they are essentially little daggers we are using to carefully cut open an envelope?! My inner victorian gothic thrills each time. I'm probably reading too much Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Bronte. 😄 But they're classics and we should be reading more of those, right?

When we started hosting weekly family dinners with grandparents and local Aunts and Uncles I put out my milk glass plates. At first several people were hesitant and even asked "are you sure you want to use these, paper plates would be fine" but I love them and if you love something you should enjoy it! We did have one break but that was because we weren't thinking and put it in the microwave. PSA: vintage dishes are likely not microwave safe!

I also use my sterling flatware as my only, everyday cutlery. When I needed to replenish my everyday stainless set 10 years ago, I discovered that it was nearly the same cost as adding to my sterling collection, so I bought the pieces I needed in my sterling pattern, and didn’t get any stainless. I really enjoy using my sterling at every meal, it is so much nicer.

I do so love to see you in that beautiful floral top, Jennifer! This was a very interesting list, and I agree with you about using our beautiful and elegant items. That is something I learned to do years ago, and I derive great delight from doing so. When we traveled to England for our 50th wedding anniversary, we purchased some Wedgewood China from the Wedgewood factory, after enjoying a tour and tea with our British hosts. On my husband's recent 83rd birthday we used the cups and saucers, teapot and plates for an elegant breakfast. I love serving my grandchildren on pretty dishes, and the girls love to choose table settings from a variety of pretty selections I have. I use two letter openers: one is a carved, lightweight wooden one that a teenage girl designed and gave to me and the other is totally utilitarian but zips those envelopes open straight and true! :) I am glad you encourage us to use our elegant items; how clever to include our posture! :)

Thank you for this lovely way to start the day and I am grateful for the reminder to use my grandmother's letter opener and be less of a modern-day barbarian! Starting today, I will go to my desk, where the letter opener is stored, and use this for my elegant mail station. As for nice china teacups, I use these daily for my coffee and tea and I generally use a saucer with a folded paper towel underneath to manage any spills and noisy clunking and it looks pretty. Yes, to good posture as I adjusted at this moment, and I may begin to use cloth napkins rather than the paper variety. So many excellent ideas on how to add elegance every day.

My mom passed down her "good dishes" to us years ago, and we used them all the time, mostly because we needed extra dishes and I didn't want to buy them. I think she was actually kind of offeneded and thought that I didn't consider her "good dishes" good enough for special use. I heard the tip to "use the best everyday" years ago, and followed that rule, and my mom just didn't understand. The dishes are all gone now (broken one by one over the years), but I don't regret it at all. We now have a nice set of simple white dishes that we use daily and on special occasions. Like you said, there are other ways to make special occasions fancy (tablecloths, special napkins, etc). :)
