Truly brilliant performance from Panajotis Iconomou. Such understanding of the work and use of the voice.

Magnifique contrepoint de Christophe Coin à la viole de Gambe. Un duo touchant de douleur alternativement sereine et héroïque.

This is some of the most remarkable and moving singing I have ever heard from a boy soloist!

the record by soloist Peter Schreier (14) in 1950, Dresden, was even better. (of course, he was a member of Kreuzchor Dresden). He became later, one of the best professional singers in East Germany.

Schreier better? - Oooh - by all means no! As a boy at that time he was merely singing the written notes just simply right through - clever in his way - but he had obviously no real feeling or understanding for what he sang , not at all in the way which the advanced young artist Iconomou performed!

As I commented earlier: What a unique voice Inconomou has. Listen to his trills, to the way he shapes the first phrase until "gekränkte Seelen", and to the power he developes in "Der Held aus Juda siegt mit Macht". This is a true victory.

Panito Iconomou stated years later that singing trills was his favorite part of singing Baroque music. And he was also proud of his vocal power. He said they had to move him back from the mike when he recorded the B Minor mass alongside famous adult singers with Andrew Parrott (see www.bach-cantatas.com/Articles/Panito-Interview-B.htm - and part A also). Of course, I realize you probably do not just mean his "power" in the sense of mere volume.

its wonderfully expressive music ( ahhhh Bach!!) I have v.limited experience hearing boys choirs, and hearing children singing with such wonderful musicality is a new and amazing experience, so this performance is especially moving and touching thank you!

Sadly slow, boring and ugly, except for the splendid voice of the boy soprano. A clear example of the nasty consequences of the period instruments practice. Nobody will listen to Bach played like this. Bach wrote music for God not for Early Music fanatics and their deplorable instruments.

I do like this reddition. I like the warmer sound of animal tripe intruments. And I think (correct me if I am wrong, though) this is not a boy soprano it is a boy alto.

Well, I wouldn't say nobody will listen to Bach played like this, considering the success HIP practice is having nowaday. Also, how can these instruments, for which Bach thought and wrote his music, be deplorable? I'm not saying performances with modern instruments are wrong (they're very interesting), but the sound of a silver flute will never be as warm as the one of a wooden flute.

Each to his own taste and opinion. Nevertheless 'nasty and deplorable' is only your comment on ‘fanatics’ and ‘period instruments’. It seems that you have no clue (or don't want to know) about the larger timbre by harmonics (resp. the higher intensity of the overtones) of period instruments. But especially unfortunate that you have no idea or no understanding of why people meditate so slowly, sadly and at the same time so focused with great intensity on their past life together. Especially in this case about the fulfilled purpose of Jesus and in this special moment of the death of a beloved and adored person.

You are totally wrong by saying that. Older music cannot be understood in isolation from its historical context.
