Mr. Owen, thank you for providing the videos and descriptions/history of these wonderful vehicles for those of us not fortunate enough to attend. If you'll forgive me, I am somewhat bothered by the often times neglected design origin of these cars. In the case of the Luigi Chinetti piloted 340 Mexico Ferrari, it was built by Alfredo Vignale, but the design was a product of the creative genius, Giovanni Michelotti. In fact, Michelotti designed over 200 Ferraris, and was the most prolific designer of sports cars of the 20th century. Michelloti's long term friendship and association with Alfredo Vignale began at carrozzieri at Stabilimenti Farina. Giovanni Farina was the older brother of Baptista, Pinin Farina. Vignale was a panel beater, Michelotti a designer. Together, these two artists created some of the most beautiful cars of the 20th century. As an aside, of the over 1,200 cars Michelotti designed (and were built) his favorite was the Triumph Spitfire and Triumph GT6.

Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment. I'll be the first to admit I leave out many history details and facts as I hate getting them wrong. Giovanni Michelotti and Luigi Chinetti were amazing!

Excellent observation of the Delahaye. "There are no straight lines on this car"! It's likely one of the big reasons they're so eye-catching.

The design of the Delahayes is jaw dropping. To think they were made in the 1930s, that’s over 80 years ago is mad, the craftsmanship was amazing. I just wonder if they drove as well as they looked ? Thanks Richard from the UK.

Thanks for the video, haven't been to the Quail in years since they stopped selling tickets the day of. (We took a vacation day from work, drove down and then couldn't get in, have never really felt like going back after that, most of the cars are post war, not my main interest...) Sorry to see those Mullin cars going to a museum. Yes, lots of people will see them, which is a good thing, but museums are automotive penitentiaries, cars are locked up and never driven again. Those cars were meant to be driven and now they won't be.

It's quite clear, and has been so for a long time, that the best older cars, let's say pre-1970, are in general far more beautiful and design-integrated than are the modern super cars, many of which are a mess design-wise.
@meltdown61652 ай бұрын
They new cars might look striking, but not beautiful. All those aero features make them look too busy. I really like the side view of the Chiron (original version) though.

19:41 RMO... great; content, presentation, presenters attitude. Missing; conversation with the restorers. You are a restorer, you know the restorers work is a complex and interesting story of blood, sweat and money, the car guy audience is hungry for these stories, you have the chops to get that story and share it.
@RichardMichaelOwenАй бұрын
Hey JP, I know we both have a passion for restoration and details, but in Monterey there is no deep-dive. This particular event a non-stop richness of life and it's hard enough to have a real conversation yet alone a recorded one.

The DeLahaynes are magnificent works of art. I noticed you were bothered by the loud music. That, among other reasons, is why I sold my hot rods. The shows and cruise-ins had to play 50's music so loud you couldn't converse with other car lovers without raising your voices. It got so annoying that I stopped going.

Quail is a good show, but not a pinnacle. Pebble is still the leading show in the US, and Villa d’Este is the premier show in the world. I have attended all but gave up Quail about 5 years ago as a regular and exhibitor because it had become just a bit annoying from an organizational standpoint.

13:45 Laughably incongruous afterthought of a boat tail. Guessing the car was built with a conventional rear end, then a money-is-no-object owner saw a boat tail roadster and instructed his coachmen to put one on this poor, innocent victim. Whatever the backstory, from that point on, owner/driver/presenter obligated to sheepishly answer all that ask the obvious question - why? IT'S NOT A TUMOR!!!
