You are not the first NYer to admit that -props to you. Back in the day NY used to also have wood fired bagels but you can't expect NY to compete with hand made wood fired bagels made with honey water. You don't even need toppings! NYC excels more in bagel sandwiches and pastrami sandwiches (which also cost 3/4x the price of Mtl smoked meat sandwiches).

Tourtière has to be eaten ketchup maison which is kinda like a chutney with tomatoes and apples. Le Banquise is definitely THE place for after bar eating. Also, Snowdon Deli which is pretty much across the highway from Orange Julep, is another great place! I like to fill up on the brisket and then pick up some of the whitefish salad to eat with St Viateur sesame bagels (another place to check out)
@ivy_inferno14 күн бұрын
Never went to La Binerie but this is THE restaurant to eat quebec's classic dishes. Because otherwise you won't find tourtière easily in a restaurant. Also, if you want a good recipe for pouding chômeur I can put mine in here! For bagels there's 2 main places, Fairmount and St-Viateur. I've always been a St-Viateur fan, most of people seems to be too when I ask them what place is their favorite... I went to Fairmount once and I was so disapointed that I threw some in the garbage lol :( Also St-Viateur makes sandwich and they are delicious! The rosemary and sea salt bagels is particularly very tasty. Can't wait to go back to New York as I never tried a bagel from there! Don't shame me please ahah For the poutine I was so pissed when I saw "La Banquise" 😂 Buuuuuuuuut you appeased me when you said you knew it's deemed as overated ahah We take our poutine very seriously here as you can tell 😜 I would say La Banquise is famous mainly because they are open 24/7 so when you are hungry drinking for hours at a bar, it's perfect! This brings a lot of nostalgia. Also they have soooo many differents poutines. They will never be as good as a classic one but when you ate poutine all your life, having some guacamole and sour cream on top of it can be interesting to try. But basically, I would give them a 7/10. It's an okay poutine. Personnally I would suggest going to "Mont-Royal hot-dog" instead for a good classic poutine (they put more gravy and cheese than most restaurant so YUM!), it's a few minutes walk from La Banquise! I also really love their steamed hot-dogs. For hot-dogs people usually say MTL pool room is the best but I wasn't actually impressed by it. But to be honest they are usually pretty much the same everywhere lol Also, an all-dressed hot-dog is only coleslaw, chopped onions, mustard and relish. Honestly Montreal is a good place for food but not necessarily that much for OUR cuisine, but really for ALL types of cuisines! I eat better in Montreal then I did in Paris, and I make a loooot of research when I travel because I want to try the classic food from the country I'm visiting! I hope you guys had an amazing experience here! 😊
@travelfuller14 күн бұрын
We almost tried St-Viateur instead but we thought Fairmount was really good! Very different from a New York bagel but both are good in their own unique way. Haha yeah, we figured there were much better places than La Banquise but now that we've tried it we can try some less touristy ones. Montreal is such an amazing food city, we definitely can't wait to come back!
@skatingcanuck983710 күн бұрын
I meant to comment sooner, but I have a broken arm and need to keep comments short. I think Fairmount has a location that makes bagel sandwiches. I recommend you always keep local cash on hand. There are certainly places in NYC like Keen’s that do cash only. In Toronto at some Asian restaurants you can get a discount for paying with cash. Some places charge a fee for debit/ credit.

Oh man I hope you come back and eat a lot more than you did, Montreal offers so many great places! In Chinatown you have the best banh mi, Tibetan food on Ontario near Berri, Momo Sushi is a must, and just lots of great food all around :) Definitely try the poutine at Ma Poule Mouillée, it's right across La Banquise with portugese chicken, the sauce is so good! Interesting video, but how can you say that the Orange Julep is "in the middle of nowhere"? It's on a super busy street (Decarie Blvd.), there are a bunch of restaurants right near it (McDonald's, Harvey's, Wendy's/Tim Hortons, Burger King, La Belle Province) and there's a highway that runs below the street.

Orange Julep tastes just like Orange Julius (very few locations left now) or Orange Dream Machine from Jamba Juice. Also, you can get the Canadian poutine chain, New York Fries at Newport Centre mall, right across the river in Jersey City. It's probably the best poutine chain in Canada and has been around for 40 years. Definitely not the best poutine from Canada, but the best that you are going to find in the US.

All the food you tried was junk food! We have great restaurants in Montreal.
