I totally agree. I was wondering why my dog, after a while,, every time I took her to the bathroom, she would take her time and just hang at the gate. I knew she had to go because she told me she has to go, but she would just take her time. And after watching this awesome video, it finally clicked. All this time I was creating a recognizable pattern. As soon as she would go restroom I brought her inside. But I did not let her go to the gate to look around. And watch people and dogs pass by. Now after watching this video, she got 100x better now. Now she knows, go bathroom first and then he will let me look out of the gate as soon as I am done going to the restroom.

I'm under the impression that Malinois are not primarily bred for LOOKS (but maybe that stunner is a "Showline"?)....there are MANY amazing Malinois that simply aren't particularly "pretty" (but still FANTASTIC dogs)--but THAT dog is just PERFECTION in looks AND behavior!!❤❤❤

Jackpots are great! It adds more value to a specific behavior. With specific training like scent detection, I'll also use a special reward to make that training more fun for the dog. Such a a toy or treat they only get for that specific work. :)

Super useful thank you! We've got this down with our 5-month old GSD in the house and garden from good distances. But any distractions are presenting a major issue, i.e. when we leave the house and go to the park or anywhere new. Would you recommend basically re-teaching from scratch in these environments? I feel like she's more likely to fail in those setups so the training is less effective and we're not making much progress.

Nate, I've recently discovered your videos and I'm loving them and recommending them often to a number of people on some of my German Shepherd (GSD) groups on Facebook! I need your advice though if you can provide it! I've had several German Shepherds over my life and love the breed. Early this year we got a working breed GSD who seems to be very driven and at times becomes so "preoccupied" that we can't even get her attention with the tastiest of treats! We live on 5 acres in the woods so there is no fencing. We also have a 6 year old GSD and have never had any issue with her, but this pup, seems to be prey driven and has chased our neighbors car back their lane while completely ignoring our calls to her, she has followed a neighbor boy out the lane, again while ignoring our calls. But the worst of all came about a week ago, my husband took her outside and was planning to work with her. She happened to catch glimpse of some deer in the woods and off she went chasing them! Long story short, our 6 month old pup was gone for 40 minutes! Today we called a local trainer to get some help because this is beyond anything we've ever dealt with before. The trainer I spoke with recommended that with a dog that is this prey driven we should go with an E-collar. I just have to ask if you agree with that? My husband and I are both retired, so we have the time to work with her, but we need relatively quick results as we obviously can't have her running off on us like this! Thanks for any advice you might be able to offer!

Finding the right treats is so hard, in an ideal world it'd be with the dogs regular food and that way you don't have to adjust it. For recall you may want to use higher reward, I'm really forunate that my dog loves carrots/brocoli but I'll also use chicken. Tend to find it's cheaper than treats and fine on his stomach but each dog will have different tolerances so just play around. Hope that helps and good luck 😁👍

Hey Kevin! I'm actually making a video on this in the future, but in the meantime, check out this video I made a few years back on puppy biting. As far as rough play goes, simply pause (don't end the game) the play when the puppy becomes too rough. The moment the puppy is not playing rough then start the game back up. This should show the puppy that he controls the game by how he plays. This will usually fix the issue. Great demo and explanation of how you may wish for more or less formal level of obedience. Question, do you next incorporate a hand command? For "Come" I like to bring a hand across my chest "Pledge of Allegiance" style. When the dog is getting close if I want them in front I put a hand out in front of waist as if holding a plate and they come "Front" and if while approaching I tap left leg twice that brings them to heel. Which hand signals do you prefer? Maybe better question, do you associate a hand signal with every critical verbal command?

I love this, just starting your type of training with my German shepherd mix, 6.5months old. He is very food driven and bites the treat out of my hand, should I still reward with the treat even though he's being a little rude about it, yet he's still following me? Recall is a huge thing for us to work on right now.

Just don’t release the food from your hand until he takes it the way you prefer. If the correct way is the only way he can take the food, then that will become his default behavior. 😁

Hey Jenny! Thanks for the kind words, I really appreciate it! For training treats I'll usually use one of three things, the dogs kibble (Orijen or Acana), freeze dried treats, or sliced hot dogs. In the beginning of the training I use a lot of food, but you do want to start spacing out the rewards. You can also set all your dogs food for the day in one spot and grab from that throughout the day. This way you won't accidentally overfeed your dog. I have an 18 week old puppy, and he is so good! He obeys my commands very well as long as I have his attention (thank you so much for your videos). He comes when called UNLESS another dog gets his attention, and then he will bolt. He'll even cross the street to play with another dog! Best.Trainer. Ever. Nate--I'm meeting with trainer later today. I talked to him about doing reinforced recall using a tie-back w/harness, as you discussed with Ali Plasil at minute 12.30 in your podcast with her. I think we can do it properly based on the podcast discussion, but I'm wondering if you could do that with an adult dog on video for us? I'm excited to try it. My recall with my adult GSD IS very, very good, but since he's reactive, I need his recall to be PERFECT. Anything that adds excitement/motivation/reward to recall is critical in our situation. I'm seeing a trainer every two weeks...I want to start and end every session going forward with that "restrained" recall. PS: my trainer is more a "behaviorist", VERY good with "Pet Dog" issues (honestly, reactivity is our "only" problem area, but it's a biggie--could result in a call to Animal Control and/or putting my boy down if I can't get it under control. He's never broken skin or caused serious injury, but he's gone after small dogs & put his mouth around necks, has picked them up and even shaken them a few times😳). The other day, he got away while I was practicing obedience around a 5 lb Pomeranian, and I clearly pushed his limits too far (we've been making great progress until this point). The SAVING GRACE was his recall--in this case, he managed to pull me to the ground as I lost control over his leash (first time in over a year). I shouted "COME", and he immediately came before reaching the Pomeranian, THANK GOD. But as you can imagine, until I manage to get him neutral toward small dogs, PERFECT RECALL IS ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL. So I'm very enthused for ANYTHING that makes recall more reliable and rewarding for him. PS: You & Bethany recommended looking into an IGP or PSA group. Both are about an hour away. I got a call back to my inquiry from the "local" PSA Club, from one of the professional decoys. He was wonderful & VERY knowledgeable (and familiar with "restraint recall", which may "pet trainer" is not). I'm so excited to meet them tomorrow for the first time. I was entirely unfamiliar with PSA until I heard about it from you. Once again--thank you so much!!😁❤🐾

Thanks for these videos Nate, super helpful! I have a 1 year cocker spaniel. Her recall is perfect……99% of the time. On that 1% she picks up a scent and goes CRAZY, sometimes we can’t catch her for up to half an hour and from then on have to walk her on a long line. I recently came across your scent detection videos and am going to start this with her. My thinking is, she a) gets lots of exercise b) knows tons of tricks c) but we don’t do any scent work, so maybe when she picks up a scent she gets overstimulated. Do you think that the scent detection training could help this particular case of bad recall?

Your videos are such a savior. Does one small tweak to the come method help or is it redundant? Give the Come command, puppy looks at you, you mark it by continuation marker “yes”, puppy comes to you, reward (or say yes again and then reward). Still follows the command, cue, mark, reward method....

Thank you for this amazing video! I have a question: how would you teach this when having a multiple dog household (I have two, they are brother and sister). Does it still work when teaching both to sit directly in front of me? My concern is that when I both call them to come, they will not be able to both sit directly in front of me. Another question: when training my dogs, they are in the same area but I work on them individually (when working with one, the other is laying on a mat and vice versa). I want to get an elevated platform to make the training process a little easier and a little more fun. Do you suggest having two platforms (one for each dog) or one bigger platform for both of them?

Thank you! 1) Usually, the dogs will self-adjust, but you can teach one to go slightly left and one slightly right. Just lure the dog off-center, and that should do the trick. 2) Either option would be great! Thanks for commenting and supporting the channel. :)

Thanks! Yes, one is a command and the other is a marker. • Command: This can be physical or verbal. It is telling the dog they need to do what is being asked of them. • Conditioned Reinforcer (Mark / Marker): This is a word or sound that has been classically conditioned to predict a reward. It's called a marker because it signifies that you are marking a moment in time when your dog is right or wrong. When we first start teaching a new command to a dog we start with continual reinforcement. Meaning, we reward the dog for the completion of every behavior we are teaching. Once the dog is performing the behavior on the command alone without the help of the physical cue, we then start spacing out the rewards. There is actually an easier way! I'm not saying yours is bad or something but there is an option to teach the dog quicker. But not always it work. Only for these who are smart. So it looks like this. When dog is having fun and not paying attention to the world just make the distance between you about 2-4 meters. Then loudly but not yell call their name and show them a treat. They will react due to loud noise probably look at you and They'll walk up to you after seeing the treat in your hand. And probably the dog will want more. Then again make a distance in between you and repeat. This is the easy way

Thanks Kaitlin! The easiest way to make a dog like something is to make it a pleasant experience. So, I would show the kids how to treat the puppy and how to approach the puppy slowly. I would also have them give the puppy some very high-value treats. This what the puppy will associate the kids with the treats that they give him. I don't give dogs or puppies treats when I train. I use mealtime as training time, so when I train a young puppy, I'm using their meal. If I'm still using continual reinforcement with a dog, then I like to use either Stella and chewy's freeze-dried coated kibble, or vital essentials freeze-dried bites. Dog's are creatures of habit, but from my experience, it can take anywhere from 6 - 9 months to create a new habit. Meaning, you give your dog a command and they do the behavior without even thinking about not doing it. So with that being said, try not to give any commands that you cannot reinforce. A little trick that I like to do for the "come when called" involves two leashes; one 30 foot line, and one 6 foot leash. I'll place both leashes on the dog and then I'll do some basic obedience. After a few minutes, I take the 6-foot leash off and toss it on the ground so the dog can see. The idea is that the dog thinks he is no longer on the leash. Then I will give the dog the come when called command, if he doesn't respond, I can then use the long line to help him complete the commanded behavior. Most training that I see is with larger or decent sized dogs. I have an 8lb Cockapoo that I would be breaking my back to bend over to provide treats. Just wondering is there a diff technique for when training such small dogs or do I just need to bend over and deal?

I like to use freeze dried dog food. With a puppy or a new dog in training, I will often start with a high-quality dry food during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. If I don't have enough time for a training session, then I soak the kibble in water or raw goat milk and stuff it into a kong or raw bone, then freeze it. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. amzn.to/2W88zMf Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed and then use the freeze dried dog food while training.

Hi Marcus! You can always go back in training. If I feel that I progressed too quickly or my dog isn't doing the behavior the way that I like, then I go back in training as well. It will help you clean up the behavior and fix any mistakes you made when you first taught it. To answer your second question; When it comes to behavioral issues, the easiest way to fix it is to use a physical correction to remove it from the dogs repertoire (as long as it's not based on fear). I would place a leash and collar on the puppy and once the puppy is doing the undesired behavior, I would say one "no" and then I would follow it with a leash pop. Once the puppy stops the bad behavior, I instantly reward and praise the puppy for making the right choice. I start them at 8 weeks of age, if possible. If the puppy is still adjusting to the new environment, it's okay to wait a week or so when they are more comfortable. You can spend the first week bonding and building a positive relationship with the pup. You can also do engagement training and confidence building exercises the first week. An easy way to look at confidence-building is to take something that the dog may be unsure about and make it predict something pleasant instead. For example: Let’s say you want to get your dog comfortable with different sounds, so you fill an empty kiddie pool with empty plastic bottles for the puppy/dog to play with. At first, the puppy or dog may be hesitant about the situation, but if you show the puppy or dog that it’s fun by either getting in the pool first or luring the puppy or dog into the pool, they will soon discover that it’s a fun activity and the puppy or dog will associate the sound of the plastic bottles with fun. This is something a lot of protection dog trainers will do with their puppies because in many protection sports, they will use what’s called a bottle curtain. It’s basically a bunch of empty plastic bottles hanging from a pole in a curtain-like fashion that the dog will have to run through. Simply put, it’s about constantly exposing your dog to new things and making those activities pleasant by predicting something the dog enjoys. Below are some confidence building exercises that I like to do with puppies and dogs that I work with. • Having the dog walk on multiple surfaces while giving the dog treats. An example could be having the dog walk on bubble wrap or a gym floor. • Having the dog walk on elevated surfaces while providing rewards. Making sure the dog won’t fall and get hurt, which could have the opposite effect. • Playing tug and always allowing the dog to win. If I want the toy from the dog I always use the “drop it” command. I never physically take the toy away by ripping it from the dog. • Exposing the dog to different sounds while providing rewards. Starting at a low volume and increasing as the dog becomes more comfortable. • Taking the dog to different environments for training. This is part of socialization. • Create a puppy or dog obstacle course These are just a few examples, but you can see how the process works. Try being creating when doing confidence building exercises with your dog.
