I can definitely recommend Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier as a great Autumnal/Halloween read - it's just so atmospheric and creepy and perfect for this time of year. x

I have read it, good suggestion, I'm actually reading My Cousin Rachel by her at the moment and it's so sinister!

For spooky books you can't go past The Thief of Always by Clive Barker and Coraline by Neil Gaiman. I know they are not the most adult horror books out their but even still I think they will send a tingle down the spine.

I picked up the penguin deluxe editions we have always lived in the castle and the haunting of hill house to read this month and I can't wait! I'm currently reading Frankenstein.

Ooh I love a spooky list like this. I might have to do one. I’ve still not read The Girl with the Gifts and have meant to for ages. I need to read more Scottish literature. I must read Ludmilla’s stories especially as you just compared them to Roald Dahl’s, The Landlady has creeped me out since school. The Graces is high on my TBR. Great TBR. Have you read any of Susan Hill’s ghost stories. Ps check out the acknowledgments in Say Her Name ;)

Oh, and "The Landlady", by Roald Dahl, is my favourite scary story of all times!

I agree about The Girl With All The Gifts!! Even if horror is not your genre, this book will impress you! Thank you for sharing your spooky recs Jean :3

It was the specific horrific creatures I was thinking of in particular but yes, it would appeal to so many readers who wouldn't necessarily be drawn to the initial premise. So clever and well written. Love it ^_^

The Mara Dyer Trilogy by Michelle Hodkin are pretty spooky. I wanna try and get to the Diviners by Libba Bray this month, which I've heard is really good.

I've had copies of The Loney and The Girl With All the Gifts for aaaaages and really want to get to them this month. May be a challenge squeezing them in among my Victober TBR but fingers crossed I can! This is such a great list of recommendations, I really enjoyed this one! :)

The only time I read season specific books is during autumn! The Haunting of Hill House sounds amazing. THE WITCHES is my absolute favorite of Dahl's!

I totally agree about the genre of The Girl with All the Gifts--not one I ever read. The title lured me in, and despite my feelings about this type of book, I actually ended up enjoying it. Very compelling and easy to read.
@JeansThoughts7 жыл бұрын
Totally! I can see why the initial marketing didn't push the type of creatures as the main focus as it would not have appealed to me but I had already picked it up before I realised what it was about so read it anyway and it blew me away.

Damn it, the Rabbie Burns poem sounds so freaking intriguing... I'll have to find an annotated version. Personally, I'd recommed "The Willows" by Algernon Blackwood, Lovecraft's "Music of Erich Zann", "The Boats of the Glen Carrig", Gaiman's "Feeders and Eaters" and "The Price".

I love Roald Dahl! The Witches is one of my favorites, and "The Landlady" is so creepy and unsettling. I also love Roald Dahl's Book of Ghost Stories, which is an anthology collection he edited.

Close Your Pretty Eyes by Sally Nicholls is an excellent ghost story. Reading it in the pitch black night that you get in a tiny Yorkshire village was not the best idea! 😱👻

I love reading spooky books this time of year and so I loved this video (and your thumbnail is the best!) :D I definitely need to read the Scottish Ghost Stories. I love Scotland and its mythology/folklore so it sounds perfect! And I want to read more literature from Scotland in general.

Yas, I'm glad someone appreciated the thumbnail! You should definitely give Burns a shot if you want to experience Scottish literature. And I hope you enjoy the ghost stories ;).

I haven't read The Witches, but I saw the movie. The scene where the boys are transformed into mice freaks me out. I'm reading Frankenstein, some Ghost stories, The Vanishing Game, rereading The Night Circus, 2 stories from King's Four Past Midnight, Dark Witch, continuing IT, and Practical Magic. Reading a few non creepy books: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, The Boston Girl, Queen of Shadows, East of Eden, and Secret History.

I'm curious - are there any ancient Greek and/or Latin works you would consider spooky enough for Halloween? I'm trying to keep my reading to Classical literature (I'm doing an MA in Classical Studies) but I still want to read something spooky.

+Ellana Rose Thornton-Wheybrew Oedipus Rex always seemed pretty horrific to me and theirs the Apocolocyntosis which some people translate as the pumpkinification aha - I've never really thought about Halloween appropriate classical literature hmm

I'm planning to finally give Frankenstein a try.... hoping it's more 'enveloping story that had a kind of creepy premise' than 'horrifying and disturbing' bc I'm not a horror/scary *anything* really fan myself. :-/
