I don't know if in USA or UK there are some of that, but here in Italy we got high schools where u can choose what address u're more orientated to and we have 3 schools where in 2 of them we study latin in the day time (scienze umane and scientifico) and a school, orientated specifically on classics, where we study in the daytime latin and ancient greek along with their literature (classico).

Jean, this is great! I enjoyed watching this and learning of ancient history/classical references that I wasn't aware of as I read, like Severus Snape and Draco, who once you mentioned it I quickly thought of draconian and was like Ohhh...yeeaaa. Lol! Totally loved this. I'll tune in for the next one.

This is such a great idea, I really enjoyed this first video! Just hearing you mentioning Diana and Artemis made me realize how much mythology must be in Sailor Moon - those being the names of two of the the cat characters in it. I really must read some of these Greek myths, seems to be a lot of killing/death going on! Looking forward to more videos in the series!

Aha I've never seen it but I like that the cats have the name of the same goddess just one the GReek version the other the Roman. Glad you enjoyed the video! I'd definitely recommend reading the orginals ^_^

What I have always found interesting is that Draco or "Δράκων" in Greek is also the greek word for dragon. Ever since I was a child learning my Ancient History I thought it fascinating that the man who passed some of the stictest laws in Greek history was named 'dragon'.

Ahh, I didn't know about Hermione's namesake dating back so far! I just assumed she was named after the eponymous character in Shakespeare's A Winter's Tale. My college town is called Athens (funny to have a classic city in the south of the US amid all this farmland) so I enjoy learning more about Grecian myth and history. Next time I'm downtown I'll give a lil nod to the statue of Athena as if she's professor mcgonagall watching over us.

What a great idea for a series! I knew a fair few of these but hadn't ever thought about quite how many classical references are in the series. I had no idea about Draco! And I feel a little bad for Metis, not even getting credit for Minerva/Athena... I feel like Margaret Atwood could write a good story with that.
@JeansThoughts7 жыл бұрын
+Helena Snopek yea I'm glad I added a couple more to your repertoire and that you enjoyed the video ☺️. I definitely feel bad for a lot of women in ancient mythology in history. Maybe Metis needs a modern retelling

Excellent knowledge of the greek mythology, congratulations. Hermione as a daughter of Helen becomes as well Zeus grandchild. Alastor is also greek name and he himself seem to have a lot of similarities with the greek god Hefaistos (Vulkan in latin). Do you know if they are planning to translate the rest of the HP books in ancient greek?

Now I've stopped being childish with my firsts, look at you talking Greek. Oh she's fancy. The tale of the Minotaur is one of my favourites and hadn't even spotted that link. I'm ashamed. I always forget how all the myths all link into each other too. I loved this very much indeed. Didn't Maggie Smith play a goddess in Clash of the Titans or have I made that up? Sorry small aside.
@JeansThoughts7 жыл бұрын
Thankfully no Ancient Greeks are around to correct my pronunciation aha. Yes, Minos and all of the other goings on in Crete are some of my favourites mths! Party islands... And I love linking them up. Because then Theseus king of Athens comes to Crete to slay the Minotaur etc. She did! She played Thetis, Achilles mum in myth but in the film she is the mother of the fictional Calabos. I actually just filmed a film reviews video including that one aha.

Minerva the goddess was celibate; Minerva McG married: a certain difference. The parallels between the 2 characters had limits. As far as a certain subset of HP characters go, a goodly number are from Greek/Roman, but they are names of stars 'n constellations, so often: Scorpius, Regulus, Bellatrix, Draco, Alphard, Sirius, Andromeda, etc. What do u make of this astronomical connection? JKR like lots of other authors, liked using symbolic names, whether it was Fudge, Pius, Molly, Arthur, or Sanguini, classically derived or otherwise. The spells are mostly Latin-based, with avada kadavra being an obvious exception. I thought u'd mntn this. Didn't JKR also study French, a Latin-based language? Was Septimius Severus the first black emperor? Just wondering. Centaurs used eg. for foreshadowing in HP1: re Mars and the new Wizarding war. Could u do classics & HG and classics and Narnia books down the road. Lots more classical fun!
