I went a year on a dairy, gluten and processed sugar and foods. I was miserable. I went in at 100%. I didn't cheat I almost only ate food at home. I ended up being obsessed and became so anxious about food and being around people eating. I had to research a restaurant and if there was nothing I could eat I would either ask to go somewhere else or just not go. It seriously messed me up. I was doing all this under a naturopath that insisted I never eat any of these things again. After a year I had to stop. I lost a ton of weight but felt horrible and now had an eating disorder. I added dairy in first and slowly started feeling a bit better. Then I added back gluten and felt even better. When I added back processed foods/sugar. I started feeling a little worse. So I decided to just be very careful of the processed foods/sugar. and eat whatever else I wanted. 10 years later I'm still anxious around food and have had a few panic attacks eating out at restaurants. I try to eat a balance diet and consult a nutritionist to stay on track. I just want people to not do what I did and become obsessed with food. Eat in moderation and if you find you don't feel well after a particular food try to have it in very limited quantities. My number one trigger that makes me feel horrible are onions. I'm ok in very small quantities but have to be careful. I'm sorry for the ramble I just don't want anyone to go through what I did and become obsessed.

Going gluten free has helped with my thyroid inflammation tremendously. I am really glad you said coffee was bad for the thyroid of Hashimoto's patients. Everyone I know drinks an obsessive amount of coffee and asks me why I don't do the same. I have tried in the past to drink coffee with all the cool kids. But I always felt sick, tired, unhealthy! Then I started getting migraines. They were so bad I would throw up. After some research (it's nearly impossible to find anyone who says coffee can be bad for some people), I suspected coffee might be the culprit. After going completely caffeine free (giving up green tea and chocolate was harder than giving up coffee), I no longer have any headaches at all. When I tell people I don't drink or eat any caffeine they usually are shocked or feel sorry for me but I feel the best I've ever felt. People I know are so addicted to coffee (they even wear shirts admitting their love affair with coffee) that when I ever suggest they give it up, a fight is sure to ensue, so I keep my mouth shut. I am grateful to know to cure to my headaches and fatigue-ditching caffeine.

Not once in 2 years did she discuss gluten, diet, lifestyle etc. just snickered at the number of supplements I took. I felt like a number on her pay invoice. With your help I’m going to beat this. OK, I'm 77. Two years ago I was told I had Hashimotos disease, even though I've been on thyroid meds since my late 20s. Now all of a sudden I'm supposed to make these dramatic changes in my diet. I'm also pre-diabetic & watch my sugar intake & check my glucose levels periodically with my own monitor. The leaky gut thing & giving up glutin threw me. At 16 I had ulcers, from high stress. I got over it. I've never had stomach issues since, maybe occasional heartburn with something really spicy, but I found the main cause was sugar. Once I cut back on sugar, that went away. So I'm listening to you now & find glutin free just has to be for 60-90 days? Then what? I thought it had to be forever? Why dairy? I've never been a milk drinker, but I love halfnhalf in my coffee & tea (not to excess) cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese & the only problem I ever had with dairy is ice cream...it makes me phlegmy. I'm so confused at this point I've almost lost my appetite for anything. I thought your later years were supposed to be enjoyable?

He says to try it for 60-90 days... Many people stop gluten and dairy for a week (at most) and they will still eat them on "special occasions", so they never find out if these 2 kinds of foods made them sick. I have been following hashimoto diet for 4 months and I went from not beng able to walk to feeling like a normal 30 year old. Give it a try for 3 months and if you feel better, keep going (forever, no cheat meals).

@@jamiehromas it is expensive, I tried my best to follow the diet while also taking my medication, that was really expensive, after a while I was able to stop some of the meds so the diet is still expensive, but my total expenditure is less than before. I try to see it as my monthly expenses, rather than focusing too much on "this meal is expensive". I live in Chile so here we have a lot of cheap fruits and veggies and I go to a kind of "farmer's market" every saturday. I have sjogrens so my mouth is kind of dry, I tend to eat A LOT of chicken soup with veggies and potatoes. I don't remember if this video banned eggs, I still eat these. I used to prepare my own almond milk, but it was too much work and peeling the almonds was really hard for me at my lowest health. I found a chilean brand that makes powderes almond "milk" so I drink that every now and then. For me it has been a switch from focusing on my meds to focusing on my food. I eat kind of like a body builder, chicken, veggies and fruits. I used to hace bronchitis every autumn and winter and this year I got a sore throat one day or two and that was it. Last year I had a 3 month cold with bronchitis and asthma that lead to me taking prednisone. If you can try to make a budget and see what you can eat and how much it costs. For me the replacements like gluten free bread and pasta are way too expensive, I might have it once a month, since 1 kg of gluten free bread here is like 8 dollars and 1 kg of normal bread is at most 2 dollars. I learnt to cook a lot of gluten free vegan things, my favourite is a "curddle" that I kind of invented, I use coconut cream (here it is 2 or 3 dollars), a can of fruit or any fruit you like and a couple of eggs, you can add sugar or some sweetner and that goes to the oven for like 30 minutes in a small pan (idk if it's called a pan... But you get the idea). I kind of enjoyed the process of learning how to eat differently, I feel it made me more creative in general. I did mourn the loss of dairy and still fantasize about cheese, but no big deal given the benefits

Love your channel and have learned so much about Hashimotos from you. I was a diet cola drinker for years. I consumed 4-6 daily for years. I recently quit and within 3 days my heart rate increased to 132 bpm at rest. I then developed hyperthyroid symptoms which were scary! Initially , I had been well controlled on 75 mg NP thyroid for 5 years. After I have eliminated diet cola , I am now taking 15 mg of NP thyroid med daily. My heart rate and blood pressure have normalized. All the hyperthyroid symptoms are gone after 4 months! It has been a long process to get to this point. I hope this can help some of you with Hashimotos. Nobody ever told me to stop or the impact it can have on your thyroid.

If you want to lower mycotoxin exposure in your body, you address your home and/or workplace, not diet. Using diet to control symptoms of mycotoxin exposure doesn't treat the cause. I agree with all of this, as a Hashimoto's patient for 20 years, except the part about sugar. Yes, processed sugars are worse, but natural sugars are not much better. Sugars, no matter what type, react the same in the body. There are actually no studies that show that carbs (sugars) are essential to life. Very occasionally honey and some fruit may be ok, but we have to remember that they still introduce sugar into the body, which is a source of inflammation. While honey and fruit tastes good and can be enjoyed occasionally, the sugar in them is not essential for life. Fatty meats are nutrient dense and do not contain inflammatory sugars. I recommend Dr. Ken D Berry, who has been a carnivore for 4 years after being on keto and paleo before that. He and his wife are the healthiest they have ever been since going ketovore and carnivore. She has put her Hashimoto's into remission. I highly recommend their channels.

Absolutely!! Sugar from a piece of fruit and sugar from pasta and sugar from molasses are all the same to your body. All carbs are broken down into glucose by the body in order to be utilized. By that time, my TSH was over 6, and I was started on thyroid hormone replacement and referred to an endocrinologist, who I was not able to see for several months, so my TPO was not tested until after I was already being treated. At that time, my autoantibodies were close to 700, and I was also diagnosed with AIN.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a few weeks ago, thinking back it should have been at least ten years ago. I didn’t know anything about thyroid disease, so my symptoms were not associated to my thyroid. I could not understand why I was not loosing weight when I literally ate one meal a day. Hopefully, removing gluten will do the trick (not ready to remove coffee, but could start limiting dairy.). Thank You for your informative video.

Well I can tell you now I’ve been gluten free for over a decade and still can’t lose weight. I didn’t realize dairy and coffe were issues till recently. I’m off of them now. I don’t play around with limiting, if it’s bad, it’s got to go, completely.

@@unnamed2737 Absolutely! If something is to be avoided, you can't just have a little or have it every so often. Avoidance means not at all!! If someone told you not to eat arsenic, you wouldn't try to convince yourself a little bit is ok. Poison is poison. And sometimes foods or drinks that other people can tolerate are poison to you. It's more abut discipline than willpower.

If someone is absolutely unable to do food sensitivity testing that also tests for complement that indicates inflammation like KBMO, sure remove these things, but we are not all the same. 25 years ago I was diagnosed with Hashimotos thyroiditis and started on levothyroxine and then my endocrinologist retired. I still had some symptoms, but who cares or asks? Fast forward to me starting functional medicine education and then doing the above mentioned testing. I do not have gut permeability issues, no grain, gluten or dairy sensitivities. No coffee issue either and for goodness sake, don't take anything but water with thyroid meds and wait at least 30 minutes for coffee. I did have a severe reaction to eggs and white potato, moderate reaction to sweet potato and sardines which was from my newly added Omega-3. So glad I was stubborn and didn't remove foods without proof.

Your videos, and videos like these are the BEST thing about the internet! I was getting so tired of telling my doctors their blood tests were WRONG (you confirmed this) and they had no answers. At 64 I think I’ve had this since I was 5 based on symptoms, I’ve conquered it a few times eating strictly and being out in the sun and active for hours a day, all on my own, but we all slip and the weight returns which complicates things yet again. ? What about drinking teas??? THANK YOU for all the details, to help refine how and what I eat. Still a tricky thing to get right. You are a shinning start of information! Again, thank you!!!

Wonderful advice Doctor. These things are not told to the patients when we visit our GP.I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2017.My tpo was 250+.Last yearit creeped up to 950 and I had every symptoms of hashimoto. I visited my GP he said my Thyroid Function was normal and he cant give me any medication. I was in so much pain in all parts of my body.i just took Paracetamol every 4 to 6 hours to calm my pain .Then I decided to go on U Tube and I got so much information from there and the testimonials from other people who are suffering from Hashimoto. After 5 months my TPO is 629 and I feel so much better just by avoiding all the gluten from my diet. The foods that you mentioned I don't take most of it.My next blood tests will be in September. Hopefully my hormone levels come further down. Thanks for sharing your advice once again.

I am vegan and have PCOS. I was bulimic and didn't eat gluten for about ten years. I was medicated for a chemical imbalance (if that is the answer) so have been on anti depressants for nearly 18 years. I was told to stop taking the pill I was on for PCOS as my blood pressure rose and they were worried I would have a stroke. That was about 15 years ago. I am 40 now. I gained 4 stone in 6 weeks and have had problems ever since. Both my sisters have Hashimotos. I have moved Drs who are trying to help but as only my antibodies are raised they say I just have to wait and they will keep an eye on it. I have been tested continuously over the last 20 years for celiac, lupus and thyroid issues and always told I'm borderline so they can't do anything. I have been told I have ME by a consultant and have had 10 miscarriages over the last 6 years. It is so frustrating when no one will listen to you and when they do you are fobbed off. Sometimes when things are bad I do wonder what the point of everything is. Why should I bother trying anymore. I obviously get up and plod on through life, but it is hard. I love the NHS and I work for the NHS, but unless you have something common or interesting, people don't look into it. You have to wait until you are past the early preventative stage and deal with a more serious problem.

This video was really informative and super depressing at the same time. My daughter and I bake homemade bread together. I’ve gone gluten free before, once for almost 2 years, made no difference. I look forward to my one mug of coffee, in the morning, with REAL half and half in it. And, in the early evening I love sharing a good bourbon or craft beer with my husband. These are the simple joys of life. I don’t do vegetable oils, soy, and prefer kosher non-idolized salt. I’ve never been able to eat many veggies raw. I also love dairy, and think grass fed butter is the bomb! And is dairy so terrible if it’s raw and/or organic? Anyway, half the tiff on this list brings real joy to my life despite having a hypothyroid issue (which I’m still testing to find out if it’s Hashimoto’s or caused by a nutrient deficiency). Anyway, I am really happy to have found your channel, but this vid just really bummed me out.

I was looking this video up for my sister who is diagnosed Hashimoto's. But I've been having some weird symptoms lately after having covid last September... I thought I had IBS for ages but now it is ramping up and it seems more like IBD (ulcers in my intestines). But I've had many tests and still doctors can't tell me what is wrong 🙃 so basically I've been figuring out what my food triggers are and a lot of it is what you've listed. Cutting out gluten has been a big help, using a juicer to have celery juice every day too. Avoiding processed foods is making a big difference too! I was vegan for a long time, but my body doesn't digest high fiber so well, beans and lentils can give me digestion problems... I was getting dizzy at work and so on, and doctors keep saying I have too much stress. But I still feel like there is something wrong in my body and no one can give me any answers 😕. Sleeping well and really eating healthy is all I can do... I've gone back to eating eggs and fish (no dairy though) but I can't see myself ever eating meat again, and avoiding the processed vegan alternatives as much as I can helps me.

I am with you! I have a really hard time giving up coffee and sugar. I also have IBS - biggest symptom is diarrhea. I am on thyroid meds and have been tested for Hashimoto's but test was negative. My daughter has Hashimoto's and genetically I have a good chance of getting celiac disease and Hashimoto's (from DNA testing). I've been tested twice, and so far, so good. I have borderline hypothyroid disease, but I cannot lose weight at all even not eating that much and don't have a lot of energy. I am ADHD but stopped taking my meds because I no longer am hyper at all and can sit all day. I am pre-diabetic and on the new meds that are injected - and lost 8 pounds. Most people lose 25-35 pounds, but not me. I do exercise regularly (at least 4 times a week, and I really have to make myself do it). It is so frustrating. I do eat very little gluten. I do have similar symptoms that you do except brain fog. I'm not sure what that even is. I used to run marathons and about 25-30 other races a year and train 45-70 miles a week and also things like Jazzercise, weight lifting, swimming, etc. and weighed 100 pounds less than I do right now. I am 77, though, and while I am generally healthy compared to other people my age, it is hard to know what is caused by just getting older. When I was reading your post I couldn't believe that we have such similar situations!

1) All types of "sugar" (sucrose) contain fructose, which is bad for us. Corn syrup is less sweet, but it's 100% glucose. 100% glucose can also be purchased in powder form, it's called "dextrose." *Best* to get our carbs from things like oats, quinoa, vegetables, fruit. 2) Peanut oil is high in monounsaturated fat (omega-9), which is good for us. It's the omega-6s that we need to avoid, because they're pro-inflammatory.

Yikes! Who told you that omega 9 oils are good for us?! We do need them in small amounts but we all eat them in copious amounts with the standard American diet and they are pro-inflammatory. We definitely do not need to eat more. And peanuts are heavily sprayed with glyphosate which is a toxin and extremely detrimental to our health.

😊 processed sugar: You mention Agave Nectar/Syrup as a substitute for sugar, but I have an annoying reaction to it-it makes me feel hungrier, just like HFCS does. So I wasn’t surprised to learn that agave syrup and HFCS are processed the same way. They’re equally bad in my view. 😊 cooking oils: Ghee (clarified butter) is another good alternative to vegetable oils. It has a much higher smoke point than butter, and I like the flavor better than olive oil with certain foods. Ghee is lactose-free, casein-free, and has anti-inflammatory properties. Its only drawback is that it can be expensive; I get mine from Costco. 😊 Gluten: I went gluten-free for about a year but didn’t notice feeling any different. All I know is that when I get my hands on some good bread or rolls, my dopamine goes up.

I recently heard the “grass fed butter”, is bad. A K2 was recommended. Didn’t quite understand. I just cut back, more so, on the butter. Thank you for mentioning, not to use extra virgin oil, when using high heat for cooking.

My thyroid is dead i was told due to hachimoto, but no one ever said anything about what I eat ,but it is so true about soya ,achol and dairy as in certain cheeses ,I also can't eat tomatoes or other vine growing vegetables, here in France people just say I am a fussy eater ,but I know I will be unwell if I eat these things .My G P said to take soya for my menopause, and didn't believe me when I went back saying it made me feel so ill.Thank you so much Dr Childs ,you have helped me more in the short time I have known of you than in the 30 years with very little help from doctors here in France, thank you .do you have any advice on the depression that I get and I am just told is part of the hashi condition,

If you’ve done sensitivity testing and it shows Rye ,quinoa, spelt, oats are ok, are you ok eating those? My 19 yo son got his thyroid tested in November only because his hair has been thinning out last year, otherwise he has no symptoms, he is a healthy high energy athlete & A student, and apparently his TSH was slightly elevated and since we don’t have a family doctor a one in a clinic after a 5 min visit, no other questions, prescribed him low dose Levoxy…(can’t remember).. only after we read the side affects, we paid for naturopath and that’s where he got sensitivity test, Dutch test, it showed that he’s cortisol has been high so he is now on 3rd month of diet and supplements, hoping this will be enough to help so he doesn’t have to go on a path of lifetime of drugs.

I'm hoping satueeing in grass fed butter is an acceptable method for Hashimoto. I'm relieved to know a little fruit is ok. I like to statue a chopped apple in grass fed butter with a little cinnamon for dessert.

Hello Dr. Childs. Excellent information. My thyroid was removed since 2018, I had Hashimoto's since 2005, my last antibodies test was negative but I still accumulate a lot of fluids, especially before menstruation, I also have terrible pain in my breasts (fibrocystic mastopathy also since 2005) my face still it has a round shape even though I am not overweight, could I take iodine in addition to levothyroxine since I no longer have Hashimoto? I heard that this mineral helps a lot in a matter of ovarian and breast cysts. I honestly gave up on endocrinologists because none of them told me about needing supplements to convert levothyroxine to T3, I live without energy and lots of premenstrual symptoms (I'm 49 years old). My 22-year-old daughter also has Hasimoto's and the endocrinologist suspects that she also has celiac disease (maybe I have it too), because she is losing weight and looks malnourished, next week I will do the tests to rule out that autoimmune disease.

Don’t forget to have cortisol levels evaluated, if high, it can reek havoc on your body, Cushings is neglected and mis-treated in our medical system, every bit as much as hypothyroidism.

So, eating an apple would not be detrimental for a hashimoto patient on a keto-carno diet, because it is a natural source and a natural sugar? And if I understand you correctly, it could even be a positive because someone with a low thyroid function should probably eat some sugar instead of none?
@YogawithAliBeale

If you were doing the keto aspect to lose weight the apple is going to kick you out of ketosis everytime. I'm type 1 it's not worth it for me but weigh the pro and con.

I have Hashimoto and am gluten and dairy free and still have inflammation, but not as bad as before. I noticed when I had tomatoes, peppers, potatoes or eggplant I would feel horrible pains and felt sick. I found that these are called nightshades and they have solanine. It is getting difficult to go out to dinner these days. Recently diagnosed with RA. That’s the way it goes…
