@KB10GLАй бұрын
The 289 was a good little engine, made even better with the additional stroke that made it a 302. It had one major advantage, it was significantly lighter and more narrow than the Chev small block & the Chrysler LA, but for use in another chassis, like a Model A or T it was long. Too long. For performance use, the ports were too restrictive. Great for regular passenger car use, but restrictive for performance. The best upgrade for this engine is to start with a 302 & go straight for the aftermarket aluminium heads with manifold, cam & headers of choice. The heads transform the engine from the little engine that could, [perhaps], to the little engine that did.

For it’s time the Chrysler Corp Slant Six 225 was a great choice for a regular family car. Easy to work on compared to the V-8’s of the day shoehorned into ever smaller engine compartments. One head gasket, one exhaust manifold, and easy to reach spark plugs for shade tree mechanic owners. After the 1973 gas embargo shot prices way up, the pretty good gas mileage for a full size car was a point in its favor. When the Plymouth Volare and the Dodge Aspen were replaced by Lee Iacocca’s K Cars like the misnamed Reliant, the Slant Six was gone, but it’s still not forgotten. Note all the great engines were cast iron. Doubtful if the aluminum engines, some even with plastic parts, will have such trouble free longevity.

The Ford SOHC was not banned from NASCAR because it was too powerful, it was banned because Ford would not install it in a passenger model that could be bought off the floor in a Ford dealership. Chrysler faced the same ban with the 426 Hemi, but that chose to do the right thing & made this engine available in a wide range of Dodge & Plymouth models. NASCAR was, at the time, a race for "stock" cars, so the car being raced had to be a stock model that was available to the public. The 'cammer' was far too expensive to put in an available Ford model & expect John Q Public to actually buy one.
@bricefleckenstein9666Ай бұрын
"Ford's hopes to counter Chrysler were, however, cut short. Although enough 427 SOHCs were sold to have the design homologated, Chrysler protests succeeded in getting NASCAR to effectively legislate the engine out of competition."
@KB10GLАй бұрын
@@bricefleckenstein9666 I disagree. The engine, of itself was not banned, the fact that it could not be purchased, factory installed, in a production car that any fool with money could buy from a Ford dealer. It wasn't the number of engines sold that was the deal breaker, it was the number of production models with the engine that were sold & available to buy from your friendly Ford dealer that was the problem. Chrysler bit the bullet, took the risk & shoved a Hemi in a wide range of models & a legend was born.
@bricefleckenstein9666Ай бұрын
@@KB10GL The engine was in fact banned - the reason FOR the ban you may be correct about it not being sold IN a production vehicle, but the BAN of the 427 SOHC there is ZERO question about - NASCAR also banned ALL OHC engines at either the same time, or VERY shortly afterwards.
@KB10GLАй бұрын
@@bricefleckenstein9666 As long as the vehicle being presented for scrutineering complied with all of the rules that applied at the time, then it's good to go. If such a ban on overhead cam engines had never applied, & Ford had managed to put a $7000 engine in a $4500 car & actually managed to sell enough, then Chrysler already had a DOHC engine well advanced in development. As it turned out it was not needed & development was discontinued before it was ever fired up. It still exists in a private collection. Sadly, for Ford, they lost quite a bit of money on every SOHC engine that they sold, so perhaps it was good, from an economic [bean counters] point of view, that they didn't need to make any more than they already had.
@bricefleckenstein9666Ай бұрын
Ford claimed that the Cammer was 50 HP stronger than their legendary 426 Hemi. Chrysler said "more like 100 HP". Mostly because it revved higher and still made decent torque in the upper ranges.
@KB10GLАй бұрын
Yet the Ford cammer could not establish dominance over Chryslers Hemi on the drag strip. Yes, Ford won a few races, but in the end, the Chrysler prevailed, as it still does today. Ford claimed a 100hp advantage? Yeah, talk is cheap.
@bricefleckenstein9666Ай бұрын
@@KB10GL The Cammer DID have a lot of drag racing success, with JUST ONE EXAMPLE being the 1967 Connie Kalitta SOHC-powered "Bounty Hunter" slingshot dragster winning Top Fuel honors at AHRA, NHRA and NASCAR winter meets, becoming the only "triple crown" winner in drag racing history. Where do you get this "could not establish dominance" LIE? The 426 only had success in STOCK classes, as the Cammer was never available in a "production" car other than the 100 that were intended for NASCAR homoginization (and not allowed to race due to politics and rule changes before it had the chance).
@bricefleckenstein9666Ай бұрын

@@bricefleckenstein9666 The Cammer did quitewell for a brief time in the drag racing sphere, but in the end, the Chrysler design was copied & improved on with dedicated race engines by Donovan & Pink [or was it Black?] Many parts of these two engines were interchangeable with the 392 & 425 Chryslers, both of which can still be seen in competition today. Both water cooled & solid alloy heads for street & competition use are still available today as well. The cammer was a good design, but Fors found some of the same problems that Chrysler did. The Hemi was costly to produce, but the cammer was crazy expensive to produce with Ford, 'apparently', losing thousands on every one that they sold. The Ford engine was like a match, it shone brightly & did well for a short time, but quickly faded away & was gone from the active campaign trail. Parts? I am unaware of a replacement parts source for the Ford engine, but parts for racing, Hot Rod & stock rebuilds are still readily available for both the late '50's Hemi's & the 426. I guess there's the story in a nutshell. My little 325 Dodge Hemi is a precious jewel & is just the ticket for my '33 coupe.

Projected to produce 700-900 h.p. in dealer show room trim. Both Ford & Chrysler were to have been banned from NASCAR because neither engine could be bought in a production car off the showroom floor. NASCAR events were for stock, production models, hence the threat of a ban. Ford couldn't do it on cost grounds, but as we know, Chrysler stuffed a Hemi in just about every mid & full size chassis that wore a Dodge or Plymouth badge. You could actually buy a base, full size Dodge four door sedan, with three on the tree, drum brakes & all the base model deletes or features, but with a Hemi, in 1968. Apparently, two people did just that. The DOHC Hemi was to be a counter to Ford if they actually made the SOHC engine available in a production model, & avoid the ban. They didn't & there was no need to continue with development.
