@@kittycat1302 i get this, it's something i've struggled with for a long time and still do to this day - but i had cancer last year, and being on that side of it made me realise that my personal discomfort/anxieties towards replying were not as important as the shit that comes with cancer your cousin may or may not want to talk to people right now, but i think just dropping a message to let them know you're thinking about them can mean a lot. i'm not the most sociable person myself, but i surprisingly found it was nice to hear from people i didn't expect to hear from?? if that makes sense another thing i found was that people were supportive and messaging me a lot at first, and then after a month or so most people stopped responding as much, and i felt like i'd been forgotten, even though i was still sick. so, yeah. being on the other side of it has made me better at responding, and made me more supportive towards my friends when they are going through hard times. sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and respond, no matter how hard it may feel tldr: responding is hard, but it is not as hard as having cancer, and sometimes we have to think about whether our personal discomfort is more important, or if their struggles are (i say all of this loosely btw, as i know not everyone's situations are the same. just giving my personal experiences of being on both sides!)

The texting shame is the worst one for me. I'm pretty sure I've destroyed several friendships with it, and that keeps me up at night. I miss those people so much, but I can't get over it... It also gifted me with a handful of exceptional friends though. Friends who just casually keep messaging me until I engage without ever even remarking on the breaks. That unconditional love is so powerful and reaffirming.

@erinm94454 ай бұрын
I've been on both sides of the messaging shame spiral. The number one rule is that it's never too late. Don't let your shame be more important than the friendship, you can still text those people and tell them how much you miss them. I have a friend who I've given the unconditional support you describe to for literally decades, I know she's bad at communication, so I've never taken it personally, and just accepted that this is the way she is. But I finally got to the end of the road, not because my love for her is no longer unconditional, but because my energy isn't endless. Last year I was going through a very hard time, but I still used what energy I had helping her through a health crisis. This year she's mostly better from the health crisis, and now I really need her support because of life stuff and my own energy-zapping chronic illness, but I'm still only going to get it if I do 100% of the communicating, and I'm just not up for that. It's too much work, and my spirit is exhausted. I have a chronic illness that zaps my energy (have had throughout the time I've done the heavy lifting in the relationship), and I just can't anymore. I'm not mad at her, but it really hurts. But no matter how much time goes by, it will always mean the world if she reaches out to me and says, "hey, I'm sorry I dropped the ball, I really miss you."

Aka we need our reminders for truly important stuff like doctor's appointments etc. and can't be wasting it on sth. like washing machines. As "nice" as it is to want to try n be helpful, can we please acknowledge how demanding from an elderly "keep walking up and down the stairs, with their cane n wobbly knees" is about as reasonable as it is to expect a person with ADHD to attend to things like washing machines and that at first try. It's not reasonable, OK? Just cause it's possible sometimes, it's not reasonable and it costs us immensely more effort than other ppl. Like EVERY damn person with ANY brain and ANY skill sets, we need accommodation. Ppl live in houses they could not build, with devices they could neither build nor can repair, with waste being processed not necessarily by them and it's blasted normalised that not everyone is good at baking or electric repairs or musical instruments. "Washing machine" is one on the list of our things. Can we damn normalise it and cross it off our expectation list? Thanks.

@@sammyjay6801 same! Sometimes it’s that I’ve forgotten all my shoes, other times I’ve forgotten to pack anything at all. And when I try to rectify the situation (of whatever; it changes) in my dream, I oftentimes struggle to walk, move, or just can’t seem to get out of the door of wherever I am, for whatever reason. I have had those dreams so many times! It’s weird… I barely remember any of my dreams, just two kinds. The ones above, and another bazaar ‘category’ of dreams where I find a hidden door or passageway that I’ve never seen before, in whatever place I’m living in, in the dream. And on the other side, I discover multitude of different strange rooms that kinda sprawl out. They’re always a bit weird and fantastical, but I usually end up exploring them, anyway. All the time wondering, how it is that I’ve just found them, but also pretty much thinking- this is awesome. That’s it. Those are the only two kinds of dreams that I ever remember. I think the first kind is a product of unacknowledged ADHD anxiety. And the times when I can’t move in them, is because my body is responding to the anxiety by tensing up; I often wake up in a tight ball, with fists clenched after those. As for the second kind? Who knows😂

Ok so I have to tell this because only my ADHD people will understand. So the other night, I got in the bed, put on my face mask and told my Google home to turn off my bedroom lights. Of course my ADHD brain begin to wonder if I had locked the front door. So of course, I had to get out of bed to double check. I told my Google home to turn on my bedroom lights. However the lights did not turn on. I immediately began to panic. I felt around for my cell phone. I pushed the button to turn on the cell phone, nothing. I got up and felt my way to the bathroom to turn on the light switch, nothing. That's when I really started to panic. How did the lights go out so quickly? I paid my light bill. Maybe a transformer blew or there was a power outage. I didn't know what to do. My hand went to touch my forehead and that is when I realized, I still had on my sleeping mask. I pulled it off and noticed that the whole room was completely lit. The mask was so lightweight I could not feel it on my face. People with ADHD could have their own TV show with the antics that go on in our daily lives. 😂
@tom774687 ай бұрын
That seems more like a sensory issue than something ADHD related, even if barely touching your face you should be able to feel the mask and also your eyes should be able to perceive enough depth even in pitch black to tell there was a mask on. The only thing here that sounds like adhd is the obsessive worrying over the front door causing you to go check it. To be clear I’m not saying you don’t have adhd just that this experience doesn’t really seem to align with adhd and may instead be something else.

@@tom77468 No. Sensory issues ARE on the neurodivergent issues. Hyperfocusing enough onto one thing to the degree where unmet expectations ("expects for phone to be on desk, not in hand", "expects to see light, sees none!") cause a panic, which in turns drags the attention further "out" rather to the own body senses, is very typical. We literally are known to be full of bruises cause we hyperfocus on getting from A to B enough to not even notice when we hurt ourselves on the way on some furniture edges. It is very much part of the ADHD experience even though it may not be prat of YOUR ADHD experience. :'D Also friendly reminder that this was a very bold statement even in the light of neurotypical ppl being known to forget their glasses on their heads, their hearing aids and then the whole host of examples how ppl in panic are known to dysfunction in odd ways. This person came here and addressed us specifically cause they knew we would understand. What made you think it's a good idea to enter this specific comment with a doubtful attitude? :\
