His opinion is right but wrong about overexposure-these are mostly annoying bands even when underexposure. But he is wrong about Dinosaur Jr. and has never listened to the Where You've Been album. Most of these bands have a few good songs, and that's it. And The Rolling Stones started to be so overrated in the late 60s. Everyone knows Thin Lizzy only has two good songs. Also so overrated: Queen, Pink Floyd (The Wall is horrible), Kiss has only Hard Luck Woman, Calling Dr. Love. The Replacements did a better version of Black Diamond. Green Day has one song: Longview.

Im glad you mentioned Kiss. I thought they had a couple of great tunes back in the day, but they've been covering their own old stuff for 40 years. They became like the Rocky Horror Picture Show, or Grateful Dead, where people would brag about seeing them for the 300th time, and get their logo tatt'd on their forehead. Then there was the incessant 20-yeat long retirement tour, and rumors that they're done 'any moment.' - Just to sell more tickets. I mean, goodbye already... But its more about Gene Simmons, and his constant salespitch and arrogance. You could legitimately argue that a large part of my hatred for the band is more appropriately directed at him. BTW, many of the above also applies to Motley Crue and Sixx, their pompuos, mediocre bass player. - Especially after they booted Mick Mars. Sorry for the long read. 😅

I love the comment about Richard Simmons!😂 You touched on it a bit, but I think something to consider is some of these bands old material versus the newer stuff. It could be a super long conversation, but I think a lot of bands are just rawer and hungrier when they’re young. And when they get to be old and are multimillionaires, the music is different. I had a friend who absolutely hated Aerosmith, but I played the album “Toys in the Attic,” from front to back one night when we were partying, and he changed his mind immediately, lol. I love Kiss, Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, etc. But it’s mostly their early albums. I would check out the Foo Fighters first album and Kiss Alive one. I also think when you first get into a band is very influential. I got into Kiss when I was about nine years old, and it had such an impact that that sticks with me. But I can totally see why somebody who checked them out later in life wouldn’t have the same feeling towards them. Also, there are songs and even albums by Kiss that I don’t like at all. So that’s another interesting thing. I think it’s possible to love a band and still not like all of their material. Fun stuff to talk about, though! Comes up quite often with me and my students. 😁

Like him, I'm a big QOTSA fan, and can even say good things about Nirvana; I actually bought a few FF CD's, and Grohl is a perfectly solid songwriter and lyricist.But there is a generic, throwaway, insincere ,Pop sensibility that eventually disturbed and didn't settle.I tried, but as it turns out, I dislike the smug attitude they've more recently arrived at even more.They're like bad comics, falling back on a handful of proven devices that get the job done efficiently.I can completely understand why his process and Cobain's were at odds.

Aerosmith became a soundtrack band in the 90s and got annoying. I remember when their song they had on the movie Armageddon and got very annoyed that every radio station was playing that song over and over and over again. I do agree with you with almost all of the bands that you mentioned. Kiss has always been number 1 hated band for me, though.

Dinosaur Jr is just a vehicle for pure slabs of rock trio goodness, and J Mascis' expressive/painterly lead guitar, no so much his vocals. Listen to "Start Chopping", if it doesn't click, they never will. And yeah, the Stones catalog ends with the 70's, later stuff doesn't count.

how did i agree with damn near every opinion of this guy. First, the bands, then his very fair takes on why he may not like them. I agreed most with the former. But that latter was at leas full of fair reasons even if i didn't agree.
@John-k6f9k10 ай бұрын
I used to wonder why rock and pop music could get so many differing opinions. To me it was as weird as a classical music fan liking Beethoven, JS Bach, Schumann, Schubert and Haydn but thinking Mozart was hugely overrated and hating Wagner, Berlioz, Liszt and Brahms. But it turns out that there are some classical music fans who hold opinions like those. Personally I don't hate any band. A lot of these bands I had a condescending attitude to in my teens and 20s, but as I get older and peer pressure means far less I've grown to like most of them. Also, I haven't intentionally listened to the radio in decades, so radio saturation is not an issue for me for disliking a band. And I think hating a band is a back handed compliment. Bad music can make you laugh, mediocre music bores you but hating a band means they at least came up with something distinctive. And if you hate a band foe something other than their music then that's more in the realm of psychology than music.
@IStillWanttobeaRockStar10 ай бұрын
Great points. I try not to take anything, including my "hate" for bands too seriously. As an aspiring musician, and being older, I already know it's hard to create music. All these bands have created lots of music.

Over Exposure was a Bitch back in the day so I would add on to your list... Red Hot Chili Peckers, U2, ... actually, it would probably be better to make a list of "If I Ever Hear This Song Again It'll Be 88 Times Too Many!!!!" and that would leave you, and us, more open to possibly giving a chance to maybe find the more hidden away and perhaps better music of all these overplayed bands we were forced to associate with just a few of their tunes to the point of ad nausiam. Hope that made sense.. ...oh while we are still band listing.. Smash some Mouth and Pumpkins on that list too with a tad bit of SugarRay if ya don't mind. Lol This has been such a Hoot writing about this!!! Hmmmm a Hoot? Hey go ahead and.... ..almost couldn't finish that. Some damn blowfish tried to take me away. I've got to admit that I agree with you. Most of these I don't "hate," but the first couple I do. But the rest are good choices where I just am not a fan and never will be. I've heard all the music from most of these bands that I ever will need to. Specifically: 1 Korn - Absolutely hate them so much that I have never taken the time to analyze why. I once saw Dave Mustaine go off on Nu Metal for playing low so you don't notice they can't actually play guitar. While true, that's not why I hate them, but any reason to hate them is valid because there's no reason to like them. 2 Green Day - Can't stand them. It's like if Ugly Kid Joe took themselves too seriously. They have a few catchy songs that I never wanted to hear in the first place. 3 Barenaked Ladies - All I know by them is "If I Had a Million Dollars," which I liked for being silly. It was a novelty song more than rock music, so I don't even think of them as a band. 4 Dinosaur Jr - Never heard anything by them to form an opinion. However, what you said about being annoyed by his voice gave me the idea for a write-in vote in this slot: Smashing Pumpkins. Can't stand Corgan's voice or personality. He was certainly talented (maybe still is, but I don't care enough to investigate), but I just couldn't take him fronting the band (which he managed to destroy anyway). 5 The Who - I want to like them but I just can't. Pete always seemed to have these songwriting ambitions to be Roger Waters and write concept albums, but Tommy is just a weird premise, and I can't tell you the plot of any of his other "concepts" or rock operas. I like the one-off song like "Eminence Front" or "Baba O'Riley," but I never understood the appeal, especially the early "classics" like "I Can See for Miles" or "Magic Bus." Can't stand Pete's voice. Daltry was a great singer, although I've heard he's lost it now. 6 Foo Fighters - They seem like a band just being a band. The music is so generic that I think they get by on Dave's personality. He's good at the soft-sell approach where it just feels like you're hanging out. I had an ex who wasn't a rock music type who loved him, and thus she loved the band. Every song sounded about the same, and to me Dave just always looked like he needed a shower even before the show started. 7 Aerosmith - Someone once commented that they don't make albums so much as they release soundtracks for videos, and that summed them up for me. Ironically, I liked them around the time "Love in an Elevator" came out, then got into their older stuff (the hits anyway, not the deep cuts), but I haven't paid any attention to their music since the late '90s. Joe Perry looked better than he sounded. Great riffs and forgettable solos. 8 Kiss - I haven't heard a song by them that didn't feel like it was just a generic pop band writing commercial music to sell Mego action figures (and lunchboxes, Colorforms sets, etc.) of a pretend metal band. There was nothing of substance there, just a bunch a of gay bikers who wore clown makeup (or maybe clowns who ran away from the circus to join a biker gang in heels). Twisted Sister did it way better. 9 Rolling Stones - Probably the only one on this list where I'd disagree. They have enough variety in their back catalog (and sometimes even on a single album like "Some Girls") that I can't say I hate everything. There are definitely tracks that I think are overrated and some I can't stand, but there are plenty I like. If anything, they sound like they're doing the Bob Dylan thing of making you believe they're worse musicians and songwriters than they are. 10 Thin Lizzy - I probably only know two songs by them because that's what the classic rock station played. And I usually changed the station when those came on. I'm not a hater, but there's definitely something better on somewhere else. Thank you for putting this out there. It needed to be said.

Surprisingly in line with what I feel about almost every choice. The good Aerosmith was mostly in the 70’s, when they wrote (mostly) their own songs. But after “Draw the Line”, it’s all down hill! Thin Lizzys’ “hits”, have never been their best stuff. Once I heard “They Might be Giants”, “Bare naked ladies” became intolerable!

My post was full of typos & poor grammer but I was trying to chuck it down ( it does look like sick now you mention it😕, just kidding🤠) & it was altogether too long, I apoligise, I was attempting to get that info down, explain some of the thought behind it & try to engender a little possible curiosity & interest. Cheers. P.s. 3 listens, if you give any song 3 listens, its usually enough to hear what it is initially, a positive or negative impression, then leave it, couple of days when you feel like it again, whack it back on & if it didnt quite grab you before then this play on a new day or night may give you a different mood & then feeling & you could be listening to it with a lazy beer, or not, but you hear it anew so to speak. Come the 3rd listen you have enough hearing & feeling in the song, even if 1 listen was half distracted its fine if you got to hear enough of it. So hopefully that 3rd listen will be getting catchy, your'e picking up hooks, its interesting you in some way or it may have potential. Or, its not grabbing you & thats enough of a chance if you've heard the balance of the song. Maybe a different song by the band may surprise you or not but same thing, maybe it wont be that album then .....

- I really don’t have a strong opinion about Dinosaur Jr. but “Feel the Pain” is a killer track with a blistering guitar solo. - Foo Fighters suck, with the exception of the debut which was basically just a Dave Grohl solo project. - Dookie is a great album but Green Day never was never able to match it again. - The Rolling Stones should’ve retired after Some Girls.

None of the bands on this list are bands I was ever super excited about (aside from maybe Green Day for a minute when Longview came out on the radio?), but I still like some of them (Foo Fighters, The Who, Aerosmith had a few good songs in the '70s, The Rolling Stones have maybe 2-3 CDs worth of good songs). The big one for me is Smashing Pumpkins. I don't know that much about the later bands you named, I have heard of them, and heard some of their songs, but I am with you with Aerosmith, The Who, The Rolling Stones, and the "punk" sound, which is probably why I don't like bands like The Clash and the Talking Heads...atrocious lead vocals, IMHO, like they are trying on purpose to sing poorly...and possibly also why I don't understand why David Bowie is so highly regarded, especially by so many of his fellow musicians..just can't hack his croaky, breathy, out-of-pitch singing. I also don't care for Pink Floyd much, I get they were very talented, but too dreamy, spacey low-key sound for me..Rush is more my style of progressive rock...

I can live with all the other choices & most of them I agree completely. Over the next few days i'll consider some Korn songs that may appeal to you or at least where the lead singer Jonathon Davies is a touch more restrained or less shout'y if thats the correct term but Korn gets much love because they didnt follow & came out with their own sound & had spent so much time playing together in moulded collapsing garages that there is a kind of 6th member which is the combined sound of the five with an almost telepathic sense of timing that meant that for the first 10yrs any member that may have left would have been terrible for the overall sound so thats an idea of a certain magic of the band that has endeared them to many. Its a case of if you get that moment where your ears like this now you always will but if it doesnt appeal to that correct level to please it probably never will. But the biggie, Thin Lizzy, thin lizzy & Phil Lynnot himself are awesome, Phil has such a heart, is a true Irish tragedy in himself alone, his writing is in snapshots of time you can imagine the entire scenario, Phil was always honest, except all the times he was a lying f*ck up but he wouldnt have denied that at all & he could wear his heart on his sleeve & get into a punch up if he felt he needed to. He was a human with faults & he never denied it or hid from it but he always loved the music. One of the best videos is seeing Thin Lizzy play on top of the pops & I think it was the night before that Phil & one of tbe other members were involved in a "fracas" with each other & right at the videos start the camera pans up to Phil, he does his bass wobbble so the mirror finish on the face of the bass flashes seperate beams of light out at the camera & the dancing teeny boppers the camera clears from the light beam as its still panning up & bingo*, Phil's got a big shiner from the squabble of the previous day. Its brilliant. There is no toning it down whatsoever. Thin Lizzy had there earliest incantation with Eric Bell as the lead (or maybe the only?) guitar & his guitaring is awesome, how can anybody that likes the sound of electric guitar not love *Whiskey in the Jar* a song based on an old Irish ballad. *Still in love with you* is outstanding. *Waiting for an Alibi* may be accessible for you. Scott Gorham was the next Guitarist & was a long time member, sufferer(lol) & also long time supporter when all is said & done. Thus was the second incantation of TL with the first having a more acoustic strumming along with Electric whereas the 2nd is all electric really. Probably a really crap way of describing things but its music, listen to it. *Got to give it up* & *With Love* is such a great song. I think except for whiskey in tbe Jar the other recommendations are from the album Black Rose & there is one or two other gems on there but Im looking to give you a choice of meat & potatoe & no watery gravy or bubblegum that you chew & a minute later the flavours gone. I want you to enjoy & access Thin Lizzy so Im making this Great guitar/Great song based. There is many many great TL & Phil Lynnot songs & there is some I dont spend too much time on so Im not simply a slave of everything TL but when they nail it they do nail it. Some rock more & some have more of a blues melancholy feel so the rhthym changes, melodies vary & they tend to avoid cheese lyrics. For now its a start, without knowing enough of your most preferred style but I only came across your channel so I'll check out your other content & see if I can have some helpful or positive benefit or I'll stick to participating inside my own environment at my own level of appreciation, 😅,🤔, 🙂. If you read this & there are songs you appreciate or Really appreciate please let me know & any dislikes the same, let me know. I love music & we all have different tastes & some can surprise us because we may like every song on an album as does our friend but there can be a single song that grates on us & we might not even know why. The days of radio have introduced to me to a great many new bands I wouldnt have otherwise listened to but conversely they are responsible for ramming certain songs & even bands right down my throat & then punched it right down to my guts til I couldnt stomach them & kept punching it down, day after day, till its only a pain in the butt, until I've passed it & Im PAST it & then they play it again..... so radio has also killed certain bands & many on your list. Without radio tjey may not be what I'd specificaly put on but individual changing songs are fine,..unless you thought, ok its fairly average, but you dont worry till its every day, 6 times a day until we could get to not hearing a specific song for a couple of years but if I walked past a bluetooth speaker, for example, & a certain specific song were to come on, I couldnt say my arm wouldnt swing toward the speaker without my conscious input & I could snatch that speaker & fling it anywhere but away & I couldnt help that. It would be involuntary. I absolutely love Pearl Jam's body of work but if I hear JEREMY again I cant deal with it. Thats the radios fault. No one wants to hear, even their best song, day afer day after....sorry. A band I can not accept, personally, is Presidents of the USA. For me Its adult nursery rhymes. The songs are the aural equivalent of disappointing chewing gum & the flavour isnt nice to me, its like,...potato flavoured or something & it dissipates almost instantly & im stuck chewing on it when I was done when it went in my mouth...or ear. Then the next day Im forced to chew the same piece again & NO!

It's easier for me to name musicians/bands I dislike. I love all kinds of music, blues, rock, R&B, progressive jazz and singer/songwriters. I may get sh*t for this. Musicians/bands I dislike: John Melonballs (Mellencamp); Hair bands (Poison, Cinderella); Bruce Springsteen because his voice annoys me, although I like a few songs; Korn; Slipknot. Those are a few I change my radio station when I here them. OK I was 13 in 1970. I love early Aerosmith "Toys In The Attic" "Get Your Wings" are great albums. Hate Kiss and Twisted Sister. Twisted Sister gigged in local bars where I grew up. My sister in law wanted me to hear them so I did. Not impressed. However a wasted guy kept tapping me on the shoulder. He asked "Do you want to see an ice cube disappear?" Before I could answer, he placed an ice cube on the bar. He then dropped his pants completely, jumped up and sat on the ice cube!! I was speechless. Rolling Stones! I was a Stones fan as a teen. Their albums prior to "Some "Girls" are fantastic! Foo Fighters was my fav band for years. After I heard the first cd Dave Grohl made mostly by himself, I was hooked. "X Static" my fav from it. I play piano, used to play drums and ended up a singer in bands and acoustic gigs for years. Missed a HUGE opportunity, but did get to record in A&R studio in NYC. Note: Although I never got into punk, Bad Nerves song "Can't Be Mine" is a fav. Just heard Dirty Honey's new song "Coming Home". The chord choices and melody gave me goosebumps! If you agree, I've listened to music constantly since I was 7 and know a lot of great tunes. lol
