I was with you every step of the way, but then you hit REM. You gotta understand that their hits (which often were indeed sappy) all came after they moved to Warner Brothers for one of the biggest advances ever at that time. Their indie stuff on IRS remains some of the most gorgeous and unique music of the 1980's; enigmatic, elegiac, energetic, well-played and arranged, and unlike anyone active at the time (and the Byrds/Velvets comparisons were very overcooked). Any of their first four albums could make my top-10 lifetime favorites. Not for everyone, I suppose. Oh, and that Dylan guy sure is good (except for a few disasters). But the rest of your list could have easily been my own.

I agree with each and every one of these. I would add to that list Hootie and the Blowfish, the Indigo Girls, and Coldplay. The 90s, in general, had very little that I enjoyed as well, punk is musical anathema to me and pop punk is hell on earth. That was the first decade where I completely tuned out the contemporary and the mainstream and listened solely to prog, fusion, and older music.

@@ObsidianBlaze9 I understand you. From modern perspective you would expect from their image that Kiss are into black metal. But the fact is when they appeared in 74' they called them American Black Sabbath - loud, hard music, shocking image, candles and fire...many religious groups protested against them, they had to cancel some tours in South America...they have their part in rock evolution, it took some time for some genres to be born. For example, i really like Bathory, but I dont care much for Venom and Mercyful Fate, although I know they had influence on many great bands.

The thing with KISS is: listen to Paul Stanley's songs and skip most of the Gene Simmons tunes. Paul was an excellent glam rock singer and songwriter up until around 2000. Gene was always an average singer with a croaky voice and his songwriting extremely generic (with a few exceptions of course like Unholy and his songs on Lick It Up).

You literally listed a who's who of popular bands that us younger X geners, now in our early to mid 40s, were inundated with on MTV from the time we were in the 6th grade up through college. I got into most of the bands you listed for like a minute when I was younger, when adolescent group conformity, peer pressure, and a recording industry hell-bent on marketing this stuff to our generation specifically, sort of brainwashed me into acting like I liked music I really didn't that much at all, but then eventually I went, "okay where did I place my Rush and Zeppelin albums?" And then I was reformed.

Izzy told a story about one show where Steve Adler was unable to play, so the drummer for Cinderella filled in. The reason a lot of bands in the 90s irritate people like you and me is because they were "products." Their image, their music, was all designed by formulae that record companies felt was attractive to young people based on a whole host of things that had been tried before. The antihero front man, a tragic figure struggling to keep his bangs out of his face as well as addiction. That sort of thing. When Generation Y rediscovered the Beatles, then every British pop group had to have a vocalist that whined like Lennon. I was dragged around to so many of these concerts in the 90s and early 2000s, and wanted to puke everytime I would see the whole audience jump up and down like my 8-year-old when I would tell him we're going to an amusement park. That jumping thing was a specific kind of behavior for fans of skater rock and pop punk of the era, like headbanging and "devil horns" were for metal, I guess. But anyway, you named all the bands and kind of music that drives me nuts. I also agree about Bob Dylan, but I must confess that his later albums, when he started growling more like Dr. John, really have started to grow on me. Thanks for the fun show and the memories!

@@johnbrohl1709 John I know that we often hear that revisionist history phrase years-after by some of our favorite artists ("it should have never been called this or that", or "we should have called it something else"), there's really no evidence anywhere that that Crue 1994 album would have done any better under a different name. In actuality, it probably would have been even further lost (a good example of this would be that 'Talk Show' album the STP guys did which was quite good, but almost nobody heard about it other than the die-hard STP fans. Had they released it under the STP name and just gone on with a new singer at that point, I feel the album would have gotten its proper due). The year was 1994, and almost no heavy rock or metal bands were pushing album sales like hotcakes. Also, I am so sick of bands like Pearl jam, GnR and Nirvana that literally have so little material, and then they are considered gods etc. Compared to so many of the bands that you speak of that have profound legacy, and extremely deep discogrophies to get no respect to these one hit wonders is a crime. Who needs artistry, soul or talent? We need $$ never mind a diversity of sound. Makes one wonder if we'll ever hear the thunder of a Moon, the lyrics of Fagen and Becker, the screams of a Gillan or the re-defining sounds of Jimi. The 70's were a time of experimentation and the diversification of sound was instantly recognizable and mainly unique. Take prog for an example, no one would ever confuse the sounds of Yes, King Crimson, ELP or Tull.

@@patriciofernandez2711 yeah I I dont dislike REM, they had a few classics , "what's the frequency Kenneth" etc. I never really got the Nirvana thing, I do think they were over rated, but Dylan didn't try to go there, even his bad stuff is good, LOL
@patriciofernandez27114 жыл бұрын
@@patfraser3869 I can't say I dig everything Dylan has done, but his best years were absolutely godlike. Even in his "bad" period he had some jaw-dropping songs like "Born in Time" or "Jokerman", stuff that would be the signature songs of lesser songwriters but were little more than b-sides for Bob. He is that good.

The man can turn a phrase like no one else, and bring a kind of reality to his lyrics in the same way that Tom Waits or Neil Young can. The lyrics hit home quite often because he does lack polish and harmony. Like Bentley says above-his voice hits the music. If anyone came to me and said “I don’t get Dylan, he sound terrible”, I’d just say “read the lyrics and listen to the lyrics”.

Pretty spot on! Totally agree with most of this video. Quite like Chronic Town through to Green by REM but agree they lost it in the nineties. Oddly Oasis usually had their best songs as b-sides: Acquiesce is their best record.

I've never liked Guns and Roses, not even appetite. Can't stand Axl and to me they are just a generic hard rock mainstream choice.

There are some good songs on appetite imo but they are way overrated. Half the songs on the use your illusion albums are complete garbage. So they made at best 2 decent albums. I don't get why they get so much credit. Right place right time.
@mck76464 жыл бұрын
@@colgrey438 To me it's like Nirvana, people credit them with bringing in alternative rock and grunge when bands like Soundgarden and many others had been doing it for years. They just brought it to the mainstream in the 90's. Nirvana is a bit different in that Cobain died so that further cemented their status but they were hailed as if they created alternative rock and grunge when they didn't. Same with Guns and Roses, it was the late 80's, hair metal was in and so they were credited with bringing back real hard rock to the mainstream. Right place, right time. Neither band is exceptional in my view.

My wife always says, "Don't yuck someone else's yum". So, I bite my tongue when someone excitedly tells me that they are going to see some band that I don't share their enthusiasm for. What I dislike the most is when a band gets over-the-top hype, with fans who constantly worship them as music gods. But, that said, I usually have to bite my tongue and avoid rolling my eyes for one simple reason; these hyped-up bands make many people happy. That's what music is for. Pop artists are popular because they give people the simple music that makes those people smile. Why should I complain about that? At the very least, I can keep my pompous opinions to myself. Because even my progressive rock friends don't agree on their favorite bands. It's all subjective opinions.

The Smiths. Don't know if they're well known in US but here in UK we're continually being told by music media types how "important" and "influential" they were. They keep cropping up randomly in music documentaries eg Johnny Marr (guitarist in The Smiths) in Top Ten Guitar Heroes, apparently he can play a guitar riff that's quite difficult to play. "You know that jangly guitar sound The Byrds did in the 60s, I invented that" . (I made that last bit up lol).

In the same Top Ten Guitar Heroes, Eddie Van Halen didn't make it. He was dismissed as " Just someone who plays fast".

Agree wholeheartedly especially Bob Dylan. I can't stand him and I've never seen what the hype is about him especially his voice. Terrible voice.
@yeetusmymeatus40085 жыл бұрын
To appreciate Dylan you have to look past his “singing”. As a fan myself, he can’t sing. I’ll be the first to admit it. It’s the message his lyrics carry, the influence he’s had on other artists and popular culture. His songwriting is on another level. His lyricism is insanely good. Honestly, I usually listen to covers of his songs by other artists, but I guess that’s the appeal for most (at least to me anyways.)

L.T. W- clearly there’s more to music than the pitch and timbre of the lead vocals. Dude won the Nobel prize for his lyrics not his voice lol. Just imagine Pavarotti singing “Like a Rolling Stone.” Or Josh Groban singing “Buckets of Rain.” No thanks I’ll stick with Dylan’s version.

Pearl Jam I got their first cd (record club), but the rest, just loved to hate. I love the feeling Pete puts into this, he really turns on the contempt in a funny way.
