The same judge was the one who let her out. Honestly in this case even tho I doubt most people would get this chance and sex and social status are the primary reason she was released, people shouldn't be thrown in jail for not behaving the way a judge wants. She was given no warning, the judge has the power to just kick her out of the court room and the judge skipped several steps because her ego was bruised. No one should go to jail for laughing or because a judge doesn't like your attitude.

When I went to court to get my divorce, one of the other cases in the courtroom that day had a lovely Karen. She had filed a request to change the custody arrangements of her grandson to give her son full custody. Her reason was that Junior spends 40 hours a week in daycare while his mom is off at work, which must be terrible for him! Also, the mom's house is too big for a child that small. Instead of living with his mom, wouldn't it be so much better if the grandmother was given custody? Then he could spend all day every day with her and her son (who has moved back in with her because he doesn't have a job and isn't looking for one) and they could co-parent him. The judge was like "Ma'am I'm not going to...(stops himself). Ma'am the paperwork you filed is for parental rights. Since your son is the parent and your son isn't here, I'm unable to do anything. You need to file for grandparent visitation." She says she WANTS to be the parent which the judge says is invalid and tells her to leave. 45 minutes later when my case is done I go out into the hallway where Grandma Karen is on the phone with her son. She tells him she's called him several times. He must have said he was asleep because she tells him he needs to start waking up earlier. She tells him that it's terrible that he doesn't even care enough about her grandson to give her custody of him. She tells him to clean his room while she works on filing the new paperwork. In my state for a grandparent to get visitation rights, you have to prove that the person with custody isn't acting in the best interest of the child and that access to the grandparent is in the child's best interest and that must be by a preponderance of the evidence so I doubt Grandma Karen ended up with anything. Meanwhile, the mystery of why such a healthy marriage failed remains unsolved.

Strange behavior isn't evil dude. It's weird and rude and I'd be for tossing her out of a court room, but her daughter was going to jail. Maybe that was just more stress than the woman could handle. There were no victims to her laughter other than the feelings of the judge and the victim. There is no law that says your feelings are legally protected. Throwing this woman in a cell because she caused civil offense, and I'm not defending that, is far worse than laughing in a court room. People laugh at funerals too man. Are they all evil too?

The penalty for drunk driving should be much higher. Maybe not as high as murder, but still higher. You chose to drink, and then you chose to drive, knowing that it is very risky. It would be the same as shooting someone as a joke. You know it may kill them, but you still do it anyway. The minimum of three years is a joke. A woman in Texas who had a weed felony was told by the polls office that she could vote, and when she tried to she was arrested and given 5 years. People have got more than a decade for a weed felony but you can get away with three years for killing someone.

A lot of judges actually appreciate humor in legal briefings. They often have to sit there and read the whole thing to rule fairly based on them so a little levity can help them stay invested in complex documents. They just first and foremost expect professional behavior when you're on the record and good arguments supported with citations that don't get buried by the comedy.

I feel like being able to give someone up to 93 days of jailtime for reasons of conduct and "respect" can easily be abused. It's in the same league as "disrespecting" a police officer by talking down to or being mean to them while still complying with the law. Too much discretionary sentencing that stems from a singular perspective with its potential biases. This can be made evident from the clip of the judge going out of his way to chase down someone because they yelled outside his courtroom.

Most judges will understand, if you apologize, and simply say, 'it's my stress response, I'm terrified right now, I am so sorry and I'm trying to control it' They might say try harder, but as long as you do visibly try harder, they tend to be more understanding. Just be honest and respectful about it.
