I usually just ask for the WC. I've never met anyone yet who didn't know what I meant by that, and I've lived in China for 5 years!
@kshred3043
@kshred3043 6 жыл бұрын
Graham, I am with you on resorting to "WC" if all else fails. But I always try Cèsuǒ first, usually without much success. I think getting through Cè as fast as possible (or mumbling it) then drawing out and exaggerating the 3rd tone on suǒ helps.

Good stuff guys. Language fear is a big barrier to many would-be travelers. You fellows have been living it for a long time and probably have forgotten the fear of not being able to communicate simple messages. One of the first items of advice I give is THE BIG UNLEARN for English speaking people. I'm talking about the four counter-intuitive Pinyin sounds. 'X' = sss 'Q' = choo Zh = jurr 'C' = tuh (usually but not always) You have to know this to communicate a town name on a ticket or brochure and be understood. Re-learn these four letters and suddenly it is possible to pronounce places like Xian, Zhangjiajie and Qingdao. Otherwise you are basically buggered when you try to pronounce anything written down in Pinyin (Chinese with English alphabet) Mei wen ti!
@heilong79
@heilong79 6 жыл бұрын
In the North it is more like 'X' = sh 'Q' = che Zh = jur 'C' = ts but I guess it depends on how you pronounce things in English to begin with.
@YJ0AUF
@YJ0AUF 6 жыл бұрын
True enough. I guess that the point is English speakers look at something written in pinyin with X's and Q's etc. and encounter a complete fail of pronunciation because of the automatic responses those characters trigger entirely wrong sounds. Most Chinese born tutors don't appreciate this difficulty as to them the sounds are intuitively pinyin and don't dwell on the problem sufficiently. So on day #1 for any English speaking China traveler who may have to pronounce a place name to a ticket seller or similar, has to learn the China sounds for X Q Zh and C. Only then is it ok to start working on words... While my Chinese aint great, this was the first big obstacle to overcome that nobody bothered to tell me. Cheers!
@Raz.C
@Raz.C 6 жыл бұрын
My gripe with pinyin is: I assume it's written so that people who know English can read a word written in 'English' characters and pronounce the Chinese words accordingly. If that IS the case, then why would the letter "X" = the sound "sss/ sh"? We already have characters to describe that sound. You've both already used those characters and described that sound accurately. For example: If "Xe xe" is thank you, then why wouldn't they just write it as "She she and save themselves and us the trouble of redefining already defined letters??
@heilong79
@heilong79 6 жыл бұрын
It was not created for English speakers it was created to teach young children basic writing as all they need to do is learn the letters of the alphabet as opposed to learning hundreds of characters. It is a good system once learned which should only take a day or two.

Guys, so right about (qing wen/请问)and (bu hao yisi /不好意思)。 Most books are very formal and not conversational. My first book is titled "Conversational Chinese 301" and it is very formal. I have asked my teacher so many times, "Is this how people really speak?" Or, "is this really everyday conversation amongst friends?" I have been corrected by Chinese friends so many times for being too formal. "No one speaks that way." Also you used love (爱), as an example of a useful phrase. Isn't, (I really like you /我真喜欢你)said more commonly than (I love you/我爱你)?I have been told so many times that Chinese people just do not say, "I love you." 多谢

Chinese characters can be broken down into what's called "radicals" as you might know from your class if they got into that stuff. So theoretically you don't need to memorize 20,000 individual characters, you just need to know a couple hundred maybe, and the radicals, and how to break down characters into their radical meanings. I know this from Japanese, which uses largely the same characters.

1 - Yi/Yao 2 - Er/Liang 3 - San 4 - Si 5 - Wu 6 - Liu 7 - Qi 8 - Ba 9 - Jiu 10 - Shi 100 - Bai 1000 - Qian 10000 - Wan and the grammar for number are counter + (ten/hundred/thousand/10k) 345 = 3 + 100 + 4 + 10 + 4 Concerning Yi / Yao, Yi is the regular ones but i find they use Yao in ID and phone numbers. And Er / Liang, Er is the normal but Liang must be used when you are counting items. Like 2 sausages is Liang, but you came 2nd in running is Er. If you are second you can say Wo Hao Er. Also look this is Pinyin, so you can assume the letters are pronounced in any logical English manner

The MOST useful Phrase in ANY language is this question: "What is the name of this?" Imagine talking to a native speaker, Pointing at an object and Asking "What is the name of this?" I call this situational memory, you WILL definetly remember the name of something you need in that moment.

+av733 From all the videos I watched with reference to his being South African or British ... I don't think he has any problem accepting that he is a white South African. His thing is the trouble with a *long ass explanation* to "ignorant people" why he is South African yet he is white. A handful times of such *long ass explanation* may be fine, but try doing it day in and day out, all these years that he's been there (apparently, "where are you from?" is a FAQ to a foreigner), it probably can get quite old. Hence, he's telling people that he is British just to simplify things.

Another useful word is "this": Zhège, which means "this". If you are shopping or in a restaurant and you want to buy something, just point to it and say "Zhège" and they will instantly know what you want. Another one that is useful for telling a taxi driver where to stop when you get to your street, is "Tíng zài zhèlǐ", which means "Stop here". Or just say "zhèlǐ" and they will know what you mean.

Great video guys! Just a quick note on something Winston mentioned at the end: Google Translate and Microsoft Translate both work very well in Mainland China (Google even has Instant On which works with varying levels of success). I agree though that if you want to really get by you're best off learning some phrases as the translations aren't always the best. Well done, best pronunciation guide I've read/seen/heard. I completely I agree with you about the language books...just for any language...whether by foreigners or native speakers they always write the spoken/pronunciation guides really horribly..never right. You guys should really work on making a video on that as you both have such insight and pronounce things so clearly that I think most people would pay to get a video guide to learning chinese phrases by you two. Your wives could help too I'm sure! In any case loved the video! How expensive are things there in Taiwan? Is it cheaper or more expensive for cost of living there?

I was in China for a month to train martial arts and these are not so useful. Some of them are very useful, but things like "I love you" are completely useless. I would add: "I don't understand" (this was the most useful for me in Nanjing because people would stop talking to me and start making gestures or pointing at stuff to explain what they were trying to tell me). Basic questions like "what", "when", "where", "who", "how", "why". Basic needs like "restroom", "eat/food", "sleep/hotel", "train/bus/metro", "drink/water". Basic communication like "yes/no", the numbers (at least 1-10), etc.

I enjoy learning in country/ on the ground, because you get to hear the regional dialects and accents. Even here in Australia, there are regional dialects and accents, depending on what town city or state you are in. Thank you for the quick lesson and sharing.

Excellent selection of phrases to learn. I say all of them when I visit my relatives in Wuhan. For shopping I let my wife handle it since she speaks the local dialect and will give her the "locals" rate instead of the "foreigner" rate..

Last time I was in China I did use Google translate. You can download translation to your phone and use it offline. And the absolute best part is that someday between January (my 2nd visit) and April (3rd visit) Google added the feature to translate by using camera, and it works great. You can just point your camera on restaurant's menu and it will translate - not that it will help you much because you will see half of the positions for the first time :)

I love Taiwan! I rented a scooter to travel the east side of Taiwan just this May. I laughed when the number one phrase was "I love you". I didn't ever find a situation where I needed to use that phrase while traveling in Taiwan. ^^

Just a heads-up, the google translate app works in China without a VPN. I use it all the time. You can do typing translations and speak translations. Stay awesome

True, but IIRC, downloaded the 'offline' Chinese package, it only works (or it works a lot better) if your phone is online. translate.google.com/ is blocked for sure.

A Chinese friend here in America says "I know" a lot, even though she has no clue. I copy her when I go to China by saying "我知道". I think it has saved me a couple of times from being overcharged by taxi drivers.

Ah ... this brings back happy memories of Taiwan! Beautiful country (well, maybe not the concrete jungle of Taipei) and warm, very friendly people.

我爱你 is also a good thing to know if you fall in love with someone who speaks Chinese btw, not just someone while in China - Also, I know how to speak German for high school/college. I think you really learn it through attentive listening and reading and trying to speak it. I found that even if you mispronounce something or make a mistake, people generally know what you were trying to say and appreciate your effort. I would speak to my friends in German (who also took German) and sometimes would really piss off my friends who couldn't speak German. I'm trying to learn some Chinese now for the trip I will take next summer so 非常感谢你 for the tips!
