She replied "Oh that's just an advertisement, that's all -- just to get people to come in." She didn't see any problem. I think it might be a product of Western education. We’re taught from a young age to be critical thinkers. We’re taught to understand the “Why?” behind something. My experience with Chinese people is they often haven’t developed that ability. Whenever I’d question something or criticize something, my Chinese wife would respond “That is just China. You don’t understand.” She had no idea why and she couldn’t grasp that I was trying to understand. On top of that, Winston is just good at explaining the reason behind things. Inventor-driven. You can tell the guy was personally bothered by shortcomings and decided to solve the issues. Someone not following the herd mentality of a status quo culture. Still keeping some skepticism, of course. Maybe the product isn't actually that innovative (and I was wondering about his water-resistance remarks regarding the zipper of the side compartment), but established Western businesses typically ask a lot of money for such solutions, if they are offering them at all. They prefer to split features across as many products as possible so that people buy several and not just one that covers everything. Might be solely ruthless marketing, but might also be a result of pennycounting business practices. More functions in a product means more development and maintenance effort required.

When I was employed by a major police force in Canada among other things I and my partner did Q and A for our ammunition that was used by our force. We did all our tests according to federal regulations in reference to velocities, chamber pressures, accuracy etc and submited our findings and choose which company we would go with. After submissions by North American companies a Chinese company submitted test samples which didn't meet our criteria . Their agent was quite distressed when we showed him our tests and he could not understand the fact that the Winchester and Federal samples met or exceeded our criteria. His test samples were all over the place when it came to quality. his retort was "the Peoples liberation army " uses our ammunition and my re joiner was " We are not the PLA and perhaps they have different standards then we use"

I used to work at this office where I was the only guy in the office. Our boss would have us all go eat lunch at two thirty, which was just before the lunch menu ended. All the woman were married, and their job was a second income. Hubby paid for everything, they used their money to pay for their car, clothing, and eating out. I lived of my income, and the lunch was expensive. I ate a salad for four bucks, and drink for just under two bucks. All the women spent about fifteen bucks on the meal, and another six on dessert. They also drank quite a bit. We would eat lunch, and go back to the office and just wait unitl it was time to go home. White collar jobs are great. Our office staff would blitz the restaurant, but know one left a tip. I felt guilty, so I slipped a five spot under my plate. Back at the office everyone laugh at me because I paid for my own lunch. They said I was cheap. They never left a tip, but I was the cheap guy who left a tip. Eventually, my salad got bigger, and bigger. Tipping helps. One woman got the salad because my salad look so good, but she got the small salad. She complained to the manager, and the guy came out and said "That guy pays eleven buck for that salad, do you want to pay eleven bucks." The manager was tired of us coming in while they were trying to get ready for supper crowd, so I think that's why he yelled at her. Eitherway, I stopped at the restaurant after work, and asked them not to give me the large salad. The waitress said okay, but never eat anything off of the other women's plates. You didn't have to tell me twice. A few days later, the office fired the token guy, and I was out of work. I knew one waitress at the place, and they noticed I wasn't coming in anymore. The manager called me at home, and asked if my boss fired me because he yelled at her. I said I couldn't prove it, but they did. The Manager said he was sorry for getting me fired. The next day he threw the entire office out of the restaurant. He said this establishment reserved the right to refuse service to any person who caused trouble. Funny, all the women thought I was cheap.

That's a fantastic story, friend. It's unfortunate some situations degrade to that, but know that perseverance is what puts you above your peers, and take solace in your perseverance making you stronger. I know mere words can't help in tough situations, but overcoming hardships no matter the significance add to your character in a way that will make you revered by the people you actually care about. I hear your story, and think better of you for it. Hopefully fortune follows you.

I don’t think it was anything revolutionary, TBH. I’d still stick with samsonite or Tumi knowing there’s some level of quality (not great, but some). If their suitcase breaks, can I return it within a week or get it serviced?
@grape18296 жыл бұрын
Yeah, very intelligent design. I'm just worried about the quality of the materials and workmanship. It's the little stuff that Chinese really suck at, like spending 10 cents more for quality metals and plastics. Like how quickly will the zippers rust or get stuck? How tough are the zippers? The plastic exterior? The wheels?
@TheArthurkan5 жыл бұрын
The thing about quid pro quo is that it wasn’t always about money, the luggage company nail it by sending a hot friendly chick!
@jirenuniverse1166 жыл бұрын
Yeah, what you just said are totally true. In my university in China (I major in Architecture), on the first year you are taught to copy others' project before making your own, it's similar for every subjects. I remember back in the day, one teacher even asked us to buy his book and sketch his drawings for sketching practice before sketching our own drawings.
@jirenuniverse1166 жыл бұрын
But some Chinese are creative too. Back in the dynasty era, they invented wood joints for a roof structure called 斗拱( dougong) that can withstand earthquakes, until now scientists all over the world are still searching for an answer see: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rWibipWVltSnfpI or Chinese table tennis pads from DHS, which are recognized internationally and used in a lot of international competitions
@Driko996 жыл бұрын
It's too bad the culture fosters more copying than inovation. China is a big country with great minds. Hopefully the new generations learn to carve their own paths.
@jirenuniverse1166 жыл бұрын
Well, copying itself is their creativity, it's how they survive. There's a saying "Many ways lead to Rome", some walk through the long road, some take shortcuts, but either way they all want to be successful.

I watch Your videos because of the Truth that You show . Don't ever become a sellout to advertising and marketing.. If You say your personal opinion on a product that would be preferred to being a zombie seller .
@13b78rug5h6 жыл бұрын
Giving your honest review and feedback on a product can be considered advertising, as you are giving screen time for the product. There's nothing wrong with that, neither there is in "staged" advertising where you are paid to say something. I myself happen to run a small business and I actually want my product reviews to be truthful and honest. If there's a flaw in the product, we can improve it based on the feedback given. The feedback our customers give us is the lifeline of our company. If the idea product is fundamentally flawed or it does not solve a real life problem, it's better to hear that early on and fail fast. Do not fall for sunk cost fallacy.

I really like your video! Not only because you said something direct, but also you said many things I might never know as a native middle- class Chinese. It’s also very refreshing to see the comments under your video, in which I can literally grasp how general western public see about China, what’s their aspects, what’s their anger or happy point, and also many Chinese who come about exchanging their views, and what is their logic. It’s even quite interesting to see people fighting each other, because in every long arguments you can at last find something very core about the people’s values, which not only reflect their personal experiences but also the culture or environment which shapes them. Really love your video, please keep going!

serpentza Really loves your video! You and laowhy86 produce a great platform. It’s awesome to see many aspects I may notice as a Chinese, and it’s also rare to see someone who lives in China, knows the Chinese culture as well as the eastern culture as background, and is able to give quite insightful and neutral feedbacks. Your video really broadened my concept of thinking in another’s shoes. Some of my fellowships might be quite aggressive with extravagant patriotism, please don’t let them influence you too much. Anyway, love your video, keep going!

Brian Barcus: I'm a big fan of Winston and it is true that he produces good informative content but this content is specific to a single topic, his life as an expat in China. That said Winston is NO Casy. That you place a man's appearance over his abilities as a filmmaker and content provider speaks volumes about you as an individual. Casy is both a real filmmaker mastering every aspect of the craft be it sound, editing, cinematography just to scratch the surface. Where Winston is a decent producer at best Casy is an artist par excellence.
