I'd be very careful before even getting into a Bristell airplane because the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority released a safety notice regarding this airplane. The safety notice states "aircraft may not meet the LSA standards as it does not appear to have been adequately tested" and that "the manufacturer has been unable to provide satisfactory evidence that the design is compliant with the requirements of the ASTM standards applicable to light sport aircraft." The company has contested the CASA notice and claims that spin testing was conducted, although the manufacturer prohibits the design from intentional spins.

Cool tidbit about the Zenith aircraft: a fair number of them are powered by Corvair engines, given an after market "5th" bearing to support the prop torsion and rate up to 150 HP. Really dig that the Cri-Cri weighs in at 175 lbs. Definitely a great candidate for an E-plane! I have to figure out a way to get myself back flying. Sigh! Ultra lights are definitely my option. @v.e.72365 жыл бұрын
Wow, the last time I actually flew a plane was while stationed at Cairns Army Airfield in Alabama, back in '82. I had advanced to a twin prop IFR rating and had close to 1500 hours (met a commercial pilot that let me fly w/ him in everything from Cessna 310s to a DC3 a couple times, which really pumped up my flight hours. Since then, I've only logged about 100 hours, cumulatively, in hang gliders and Para gliders. It has been a few years, now, since I've flown at all. I'm also now a paraplegic, which makes things a bit more problematic, as well as unaffordable to me on Social Security.I think about flying every time the wind picks up. lol

I notice that most of the planes shown had low wings. I can understand their appeal; they remind one of World War II fighters. However, if I could afford to buy an airplane, I would prefer one with high wings, for ease in viewing the ground below. Unfortunately, there were only two high-wing planes shown: the Icon A5 (4:42) and the X-Cub (7:28).

Hi, thanks for watching! It depends on your country's regulations. In Europe, Light Aircraft Pilot license is required
@ethanclemmer59925 жыл бұрын
Yeah you'd need a license for these. Generally not for ultralights though. None of the plane shown the video are considered ultra lights(atleast in the US). In order to be classified as an ultra light according to the FAA the aircraft needs to be less than 254lbs, fly slower than 55 kts, seat only 1, and can't hold more than 5 gallons of gas. All of this info can be found in the FAR AIM part 103 or you can just google FAA 103

OK I frely admitthat this might be a daft question to most experienced fliers, but based on the old addage "How can you find the answer, if you don't ask the question" I don't know the answer, so, I'm asking the question, Are any of these planes or similar ones, (ie solid wing planes, as opposed to ultralight gliders) available to fly WITHOUT a "pilots licence" ?.
@MustSeeTech6 жыл бұрын
Good day. It all depends on the country where you are going to fly. In The US for example, ultra light aircraft do not require a license. ultralight is an aircraft that weighs less than 254 pounds, carries a maximum 5 gal. of gas, doesn't fly faster than 63 mph and seats only one person. You can legally fly it without a pilot's license, without training -- without any qualifications at all.
@crushed516 жыл бұрын
@@MustSeeTech Thank you most kindly for the info my friend, however you missed out one important piece of info. Are any ultralight aircraft solid winged, as opposed to the floppy canvas wing o f the glider ?
@MustSeeTech6 жыл бұрын
I would assume that a solid sturdy wing might end up weighing too much and kicking out the aircraft out of the ultralight class. Though carbon fiber or lightweight alloys might do the job, however the price will end up being unaffordable by a wide margin
@partriarch6 жыл бұрын
Many innovative aircraft represented. Unfortunately, I cannot consider any of them. I suffer from serious heart disease, and cannot apply for a pilot's license. I might be a passenger, but never in control of the craft. The solar powered 'Elektra One Solar' was the plane I favored most, since you don't have to worry about fuel as long as you have sunshine. Nice video
@MustSeeTech6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your feedback. Glad you liked the video. Take care of yourself and be healthy!
@johnmay36556 жыл бұрын
According to internet sources the Sport Pilot license does not necessarily require a medical certificate. This license has severe restrictions as to the type of aircraft, flight area, altitude, weather, time of day of flight, etc. So depending on your physician's advice and a review of the FAA requirements you may qualify for this license. Good luck.
@partriarch6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the encouragement, but I still have to pass on the license. You see, I've had a 5-way CABG (open heart surgery) 20 years ago. Then I needed to have a "stent" put in about 8 years ago as blood flow was deteriorating. I've had occasions when I felt almost stricken without much warning. Driving on the road at least gives me a chance to stop and not cause an accident. I trust myself as a aircraft passenger, but not as the primary pilot. If I should suffer a sudden, final heart attack before I can even call "Mayday", I may end up plummeting to earth and possibly harming or even killing others as a result. I am not willing do that, so I reluctantly set aside my boyhood dreams in favor of the welfare of innocent lives. I can live with that.

I think you've shown a wide variety of aircraft, LSAs, conventional and experimental. 100k can be quite affordable as plane sharing and finance options are available. Also most of these new LSAs come with glass cockpits, and ballistic parachutes as opposed to a 1960s era Cessna that can be had for the price of a Toyota Corolla. Many different definitions of STOL have been used by different authorities and nations at various times and for a myriad of regulatory and military purpose ""A STOL aircraft is an aircraft with a certified performance capability to execute approaches along a glideslope of 6 degrees or steeper and to execute missed approaches at a climb gradient sufficient to clear a 15:1 missed approach surface at sea level... ." US Federal Aviation Administration[21]" www.zenithair.net/specs-ch650/ 500 foot ground roll. So, Zenith doesn't advertise it a s STOL but it is, especially compared to a VariEze for example.
@joshuauriarte4526 жыл бұрын
Technical it is. It just dos not have the FCC and EASA STOL certification. Not all aircraft need it. It just means Sort take off and landing and they can land at any small airport. My friend owns a STOL aircraft. It just means it can land in under the 1200ft mark and it rugged enough for rocky/dirt runways.

+Must See Tech I think it's the same company, Zenith make both planes. Another LS plane comes to mind, the Dyne Aero small 2 seater is powered by an 80 hp rotax and goes over 190 mph and weighs like 200 kg empty, one of the lightest fastest LS planes (with a decent cockpit) and it has fixed gear. In this class it seems that retractable is useless cos the fastest ULs are all fixed. There is one that goes like 219 mph on 100 hp (2 seats) and fixed gear. And another one with 120 hp goes 250 mph, 2 seats and fixed gear. And another (expensive) LS plane that goes 300 mph on 120 hp with 2 seats and the nose wheel is fixed. No fully retractable comes near that. In this class. Fixed must be so way lighter and more efficient. Really weird!

No SLSA is allowed to fly faster than 120ktas in the USA. Any product that claims to fly faster cannot be imported and sold as an SLSA in the USA. Also SLSA must not be heavier than 1320 gross. They are also restricted to two seats. Any light or ultralight aircraft from Europe brought to the USA that does not match the SLSA restrictions must be sold as an 'experimental' aircraft. The Zenith is an experimental kit aircraft. The Bristell Classic is also an SLSA that cannot exceed specs in the USA. The X-Cub is a Part 23 certified aircraft. The Panthera is also an experimental aircraft not yet certified. Current planes are built in the factory and cannot be sold as completed aircraft in the USA yet. There are two other SLSA to be considrered...the lowest cost factory built in Washington state is the Vashon priced around $120k and uses a Continental engine (it will lead the pack one day). The other is the Flight Design CTLSi...it is the market leader in the light plane space and leaving it off this list is an error.

there's almost no way the average Joe/Mary can afford the aircraft of today. yes great strides have been made in technology but cost has far exceeded earnings. even Ultralights are hitting the $20,000 mark. we're being priced out of this hobby.

Hey there. Thanks for your feedback. I doubt that prices will ever go down enough to be affordable for everyone. In the meantime, there are decent used options if you are not ready to pay a big chunk of money for a new model

Keith, you should have hung in there, I agree all but one of them is that whacked out wishful thinking dreamer price. The last Ultralight Airplane I biult weighed in at 240 pounds. Cost 4000 bucks to build. BUT, The Cri-Cri at the end of this video is just light enough to fly FAA Part 103 , and it's 26,000 bucks. I still question that; however it's in the ball park of a middle class workers toy. The others forget about it. Seems as though once rich people take a liking to something they ruin it for everyone else with their race to the top for cost.

most of these are light sport aircraft not ultra light aircraft, it is unlawful to fly a second person in a ultra light aircraft even with a pilots license but you need at least a drivers license to fly a light sport and a pilots license to fly a second person in a light sport, and plus you put yourself and others at risk without proper training which is an additional $4,000-$12,000.

General Aviation is dead . Wages of most folks has gone down and Millenials are so strapped with student debt the're not buying houses or having kids because of that . What relatively young person does anyone know that has the income to buy something that costs as much as a house for sport ? The Great American Middle Class is no more and began dying rather quickley in the 80's . There arent enough rich people interested in this level of aviation as even 200mph is too slow not to mention the dangers of hard IFR and night IFR and icing in light single engine aircraft . the planes shown here are pretty and impressive indeed but the few middle class folks I know who could afford 100K to 400K for sport are old and arent into aviation and flying professionally in most cases doesn't pay well enough to afford anyone of theses planes . Peace out !

@@markburton5170 sorry, cant provide links straight away, but one went down 10kms from my home, killing the student and almost the instructor, and another with two instructors onboard in the same state. Both these in Victoria, Australia. Perhaps google Bristell crash Cardinia and Stawell, Victoria, Australia. There have certainly been others overseas. I have been flying 45 years, am ultralight instructor for 30 yrs, full time firebombing pilot currently, so have some idea. The Bristell was first in recreational category here and got slipped into LSA without scrutiny of its flying characteristics. One of the schools involved in the fatal here has testing officers that refuse to stall the aircraft, even on a flight test. The RV range is a quality product. Cheers

@MustSeeTech7 жыл бұрын
ultralight was used here as an adjective, super light if you wish. However, even if we were technical about the term, in many countries classification is different. For example in Canada a 1200 lbs plane would still qualify for the ultralight class.
@myotherusername92247 жыл бұрын
I have EAA magazines going back to the 1950s and 'ultralight' was used even back then to describe any really small plane. Part 103 adopted the word and people think they are synonymous: "Part 103 Ultralight" means "ultralight = Part 103". No. They aren't synonyms. In countries that don't have Part 103, people today still use the term in its original sense: very small plane.
@michaelamick82957 жыл бұрын
International classifications use the Ultralight designation differently than the FAA here in the US. However even the European "Ultralight" is still somewhat different than the FAA "Light Sport Aircraft", with different weights & speeds for what may appear to be outwardly identical Aircraft. Can be very confusing even to people within the aviation community. Every juristiction has it's own regulations & flight stress requirements & every airplane's subtile nuiances can effect flight chracteristics at the edges of it's flight limits envelope. BTW I believe "Microlight" is the international general descriptor for US's 254lb empty weight Ultralight class.

The stol from zenith is the 750 . NO VANS no Rans you are poorly informed. No aircraft that is not on the market with a price should be listed. You really think people are going to plop down a quarter million on a new mfg that may not be there when they need support (parts). In the US I would (did) stick with Vans, Rans, Zenith, Cub crafters. All have a track record. Years ago Vans hit 5000. Seen many for sale well under 100K for a very nice low time. Now compare performance. I am happy with my Rans. You may look up what a Roatx 912 uls burns at 4200 rpm to see why. Sea planes seem like a better idea than they are. Figure a 20 percent performance hit, many complications. The cri cri is an amazing piece of engineering, no thanks. Built from fiberboard (some say cardboard) flying on 2 15 hp drone 2 cycle motors. Build a 3 wheel go kart with those wheels and drive it at 60.

I'd even like to have an ultralight! I went on a flight in one at Spearfish SD Spotted some deer and circled them realized I was getting a little low, and tried to pull up, but had a air wing lock, just then the pilot told me, you better get this up a bit. stick was totally locked, I didn't know that he too was trying to pull up on stick. Had one idea and knew had to do it hard and fast, so he wouldn't try and prevent me, I kicked right rudder as hard as I could, and instantly the lock let go...when he landed he said he was just reqdy to pull the parachute, and thought my trick was amazing!!
