I think that the reason there's no solid description of what Jesus looked like is because we aren't meant to know, it's irrelevent because it's his word and deeds that are important. All throughout history, he's been depicted as whatever race/creed the people creating the art is... maybe it's to make him more relatable? Either way, 'claiming' him as your race, my race etc.. is a form of pride and pride is a sin and a distraction of what we're meant to be consentrating on - God created all men equal.

I think too the way a biography was written in the classical world was completely different too, they wanted to know about the important words and deeds of that person, all the background information we get told now wasn't seen as relevant. St Augustine's book Confessions is so so unusual in starting with himself as a baby, then a boy, then an adolescent, then a young man and so on. He wasn't doing that because he thought everyone will be interested in knowing all about his life as a student but to explore of how he was relating to God at different moments in his life. For us though it teaches us also a lot about what it was like to be a North African roman in the 4th century.
