In this video I reveal 10 of the most pest prone house plants I have ever grown. From the mealy bug manufacturing factories, to scale breeding centers and down to thrip warehouses and beyond lol . Do you agree with this list ?

I knew you was going to say the monstera is a thrip magnet! I recently got rid of mine because of it. Funnily enough, I brought a Hoya bella from a seller in a facebook 2 years ago and it was covered it thrips, they took down a few of my plants. The only thing that got rid of them was systematic pesticide.
@TheMillennialPlantDad4 ай бұрын
Yup a lot of people don’t realize that thrips really do love their Monstera Deliciousa. And yes a systemic pesticide is extremely effective against thrips

You are so entertaining 😆 And you made me run to my schefflera...! No scale. Phew! But I will keep a closer eye on it for now. The leaf covering is so dense, that I can't see the stems at all, which would give the bastard suckers a perfect opportunity to establish a colony. The aglaonema issue was also news to me.

Since you are going to do a video on ants, here’s a question that nobody seems to be able to answer. Everyone says that a plant will create EFN to attract ants, and some say the ants are supposed to help with pests? To me it sounds like ants just help pests thrive? Can you tell us how ants would actually benefit a plant? Or what is the purpose of EFN?

Good to know about that Hoya compacta. I always wanted one but I figured cleaning it would be hard. I had my first scale issue now with my Xanadu philodendron and you are right I use rubbing alcohol to rub them off right now. He made me laugh when he mentioned the thrips. I have never had them before and I hope and pray I never get them. I have 4 monstera and have seen them knock on wood.

That is so weird on your Umbrella trees I wonder if it's just where you are located. I'm in the north of the U.S. and have never had a problem with them. I every three weeks spray my plants down after their watering with "Captain Jacks Dead Bug Brew" I keep a plant journal that I fill in weekly with that has been watered and so forth but on the dote of 30 days everyone gets sprayed down then in Nov - the end of winter I don't but come spring I start the 30 day sched. all over again. I have to be smart with money and my plants so I treat before I ever see anything and it works! Also EVERY new plant gets treated and left in a room alone before I do anything with it it gets treated twice before it goes anywhere in the house so I have ZERO problems.
@TheMillennialPlantDad4 ай бұрын
You’ve probably and thankfully never experienced scales on your umbrella trees because you have a pest prevention routine that you follow fervently. It’s something more of us need to do actually 😊
@MichaelDomer2 ай бұрын
@@TheMillennialPlantDad I never do any best protection routine on my umbrella trees and they never had any pests in over 20 years that I won them, and I got 4 of them, one quite large. You get pests on them because you treat them wrong, and I know exactly what's causing your problems.

I lost a poinsettia I had for over six years to spider mites. I couldn't save it, no matter what I did. It was winter with piles of snow when she became d3as3sed. I put her outside and let the spider mites freeze to d3@th.

I truly dislike scale and mealies, ugh I attack them with alcohol on cotton, then wipe down the sticky leaves (from scale). Yes they certainly do travel , wish I had seen this sooner. The one plant I refuse to buy because of scale are any palm…🌴 good info and a heads up on certain plants! 🌿🪴🌱
@TheMillennialPlantDad4 ай бұрын
Thank you so much . Oh I didn’t know palms were scale prone . But yes best to avoid anything that is a scale magnet but scales and mealies are actually the worst!

Knock on wood, never had any pests on my Calathea collection. And they are all touching leaves and sitting next to each other. Even though my adansonii has an ongoing thrip-problem and it's sitting next to my Calatheas, they never ventured over. I have had them for two years now and every few weeks I put in predatory mite satchels, just as a prevention. It worked so far. Even the thrip damage on my adansonii is minor and just cosmetical, not even enough for yellowing leaves Also: know thy enemy. I have high humidity in my home, so thrips tend to thrive while spider mites stay away.
@TheMillennialPlantDad4 ай бұрын
Predatory mites are awesome. I wish we could buy them here .
@MichaelDomer2 ай бұрын
*_"Even though my adansonii has an ongoing thrip-problem"_* Toss it out! The best way to get rid of thrips with 100% success. I'm not joking, fighting can be an ongoing battle, and sometimes increasingly costly. take the loss of the plant and sleep well again.
@silviap44782 ай бұрын
@@MichaelDomer actually I can savely say I got rid of them. I used insecticide that is applied by watering, so the plant stores it in its cells, while not harming the predatory mites. I applied all that a few weeks before the post I made, I have since then cut and extended the moss pole (shortly before the post) and there are no more damages on the leaves. The entire room is completely thrip free 🎉
@MichaelDomer2 ай бұрын
Agalaonema scales prone? You gotta be kidding, never had any in many years. I seriously wonder what you're doing to your plants that you have so many issues. Here's a pro tip for you: scale (no pun intended) your plant collection down, and take better care of them. Major pest problems are caused by the owner!
@roots_and_ruin4 ай бұрын
Scale are absolutely the devils work, I hate them! Had them on everything from aloe to alocasia and they're so damn hard to get rid of! Yeees expose the deliciosa, I had thrips on mine for MONTHS before realising - I'd never had them before so I thought the damage was related for watering or fertilising 🙃 easy enough to get rid of luckily!
@TheMillennialPlantDad4 ай бұрын
Exactly! Scales are so indiscriminate and can appear on any and every plant . They are the worst. Lol , and in so glad you got rid of the thrips on your monstera 😊
@MichaelDomer2 ай бұрын
*_"easy enough to get rid of luckily!"_* No, they're not, unless you use a systemic pesticide and live in America that lacks any strict pesticide rules. In my country systemic pesticides are completely banned for good reasons, since they're toxic to many useful insects in particular bees. The same applies to food from the USA, I try to avoid eat it, your country has very weak rules in that area.

@@TheMillennialPlantDad *_"Thankfully I ordered a systemic pesticide and they all disappeared like magic !"_* America is very nonchalant when it comes to pesticides, and even food safety. I have 4 schefflera arboricola plants, one is like 6 times bigger than yours. I have them for over 20 years, by far the easiest plant to take care off, easy to propagate, not very prone to root root, and none of them was ever infested with pests... ever. As a matter of fact, I had a thrips infestation, yet every schefflera arboricola plant was totally ignored. I know why some of you get pests on them, and why others do. Hint: study how they grow in nature.
@MichaelDomer2 ай бұрын
I think you're misleading people. Calling that one plant a mealy bug factory is foolish. No plant produces pests. Secondly, you cannot say that a plant is pest prone, just because it had pests. A lot of times the owner was the real problem. Don't even get me started about taking your plants outside, it just multiplies any problem that a plant already had. I went without pests for over 27 years with indoor plants. I say it again, the main cause of pests are the owners. I never had any spider mites, mealy bugs, scale, etc...you name it, even the schefflera arboricola plant that you call pest prone never had any pests, and my biggest one is huge, 6 times bigger than the one you're showing, so it would be a pests first target. And look at yours... a variegated one... some people like to mess with mother nature, and then they're surprised to get a weak variety. I'm not surprised that some people often get pests the way they're treating their plant. Here's a wake-up call for you: a strong healthy plant is far more resistant to pests.

I have to agree, I only rarely see pests on my plants and I have been a grower for 5 decades now. I don't like the idea of treating bugs much because it effectively kills off the good bugs too.
