Yeah, the biggest issue is that they require a lot of in direct light they're not fit to work inside of a home so they generally die unless you have a really big massive windows open 24/7. so not only do they need a humid climate, but they also need tons of lights which is really tricky. Because most homes are not design to have the lights blasting inside. I live in Florida, so I qualify to be able to raise the Plant but most homes here are not built with massive amounts of interior lighting unless you have a sunroof, or Florida room, which is rare nowadays. even when I had windows, completely bathed in light and only had a little bit of a covering because of the side of the house being connected to a parking roof it still wasn't enough. They would probably work better if people had like a walk up area that's connected to the house with light coming in on directions full blast but still covered.

I have one alocasia growing in leca. One is a sad stalk in a prop box. It dies back to a stalk every time I take it out of the prop box. I will never buy another one ever again.

In my experience that alocasias and colocasias do better outside in humid areas..... indoors or dry places spider mites devour them without delay.

I refuse to purchase another calathea unless I’m gifting it to someone I don’t like. They are way too fussy for a plant that refuses to die. I have 3.5 and don’t plan to add anymore. The .5 is for the one that I’ve left to die but refuses to..

I love calatheas sooo much. Right now, I've got 5 and two halves of them.. 😅 The five look okay.. 3 of the are in pon really enjoying their life. The two "half plants" are medallions I am trying to save in water for the very last time... Didn't succeed with pon. If I ever find a white fusion, I will probably get it. It is on my wishlist 😍 But I'm definitely not going to try more that once if the queen doesn't like me..

Alocasias are another plant that will only thrive in the tropics. My grandmother lives in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷and she doesn’t even keep them indoors! She grows stunning alocasia in the ground on the shady side of her house and lets Mother Nature do the all the work!

I would put ferns on this list because if I whisper too loudly about how the one rabbit foot I have is still alive, she’ll shrivel up from spite 😆 Also, if you can, get an in-line water filter. I swear all of my fussy plants quit acting up when I got one. It’s under my kitchen sink and makes everything so much easier. No more crispy tips from tap water, because the tap is filtered already. 🎉

Oh yes to your choices…for me, no to: ivy, African violets, begonias, palms, pepperomias, string of anything, gardenia, croton, orchids…but I keep trying them. Last one was a beautiful pink flowered black ruffled leaf African violet. But I did so enjoy it until it was down to 1 leaf ( now).I do have 3 Hoyas ( from watching Basie Plants) that are doing well-H. carnosa, curtisii, and ‘Crimson Princess’. Phalaenopsis orchids are easy if you just keep them in bark and soak them when almost dry. They like bright indirect light. Strings of anything can go to hell tho

I've killed two alocasias before. I finally decided to get another one, but it got mites right away! It took a couple weeks of consistently doing damage control, plus putting her into a terracotta pot to get her happy again. I water her thoroughly about once a week and give her just a bit of water a few times a week. I'm also sure to keep her in high humidity. So much work, but it's so satisfying to see her thriving!

It’s crazy how different plants can grow so differently in different environments bc my micans in an 8 inch hanging pot. Big thick and lush! I’ve had it for 4 years now grown from 4 cuttings I got in a mystery box. I have them growing all over my apartment in NYC climbing the walls. They don’t like bright light and they don’t like to dry out.

I totally agree on so many of these plants and the reasons they do not thrive in your area. I have a different set of house conditions. Hot summers bitter cold winters and dark gloomy winter days. I am with you 100%. If a plant does not always bring you Joy it is time to pass it on to some one else.

I found this video very entertaining. However, I want to say that Hoya are one of my favorite plants. If you want them to thrive you need to keep therm indoors, this way they are not subjected to rainy or dry seasons. As with most plants you need to put in the work for them to do well. I agree some are more difficult than others. As for the Micans, you are right. They do grow like weeds. I have a very large one that was crawling all over the walls. I used to propagate what I cut off. Now I just throw the cuttings away. For plants that loves water. Get self watering planter pots. I have almost all of my plants in self watering pots, except for some of the ones outside. I understand your dilemma because of your climate. Alocasia, are spider mite magnets. They test your patience for sure. Nice video. Maybe invest in some cactus plants. Calathias are horrible!

I have a GORGEOUS micans! I wanted it to fill out and grow bigger leaves, so i used to prop it to add back a lot. I also let it climb a trellis, so the leaves aren't small and ugly. I'm also an alocasia girlie! I have like 11 (and there's definitely a few more on the wishlist)! My oldest is 18mos. I have the care down to a science. They're an easy genus for me!

Poor alocasia! 😂. I must have a gift for them or somethng because i SUCK at keeping most plants alive but my amazonica has become my superstar! I got it when it was 7 i ches and now it has 17 leaves. Almost a year since i got it and it has flowered twice. I keep it under a grow light. I seriously dont think i am a talented keeper. I am just as amazed but this one has been super easy to care for. I also keep it moist at all times and i keep a layer of moss on the surface of the soil.

Just discovered your channel. I love Alocasias, but I agree with you on the Calathea. I have a Rufibarba, which is all I can manage. It's in my bathroom, so it gets the humidity and I use a watering globe, otherwise I'd forget to water it. I also use a water conditioner because the water where I live is very chlorinated.

I’m with you about being over high maintenance plants! And accepting that some are just not going to do well in your climate. I want to enjoy my plants, not stress about how to keep them alive. 😂 The way you describe Micans is how I feel about Tradescantia. Grows like a weed, but requires constant chopping and propping to keep it looking nice. I’m over them lol. I keep my Micans in a corner that’s a little more shady, so it doesn’t grow as fast, but stays pretty compact.

Your are 100% correct about the Homalomena. I grow mine in a self watering pot and I keep it in a shaded/low light spot. It does well in these conditions anything different and it struggles. I live in coastal Georgia, USA.

Genuinely shocked when I heard hoyas :O They're some of my absolutely favourite plants - easy-going and healthy. Never had a problem with overwatering - just keep them in a small pot and let them properly dry up between each watering. However, I live in a temperate climate and I'm not familiar with monsoons. Maybe the high humidity makes them prone to mildew?

Aww, I really like my alocasias! Most of my established ones have 4 or more leaves and are always giving me corms. Best advice for me is to leave them where they like the conditions, maintain abt 50% humidity, and water them about one every 10 days if you have a nice well-drainin, semi-hydro or amendment-heavy soil mix. And my never-agains are ANY philodendron, most palms, homalomena, and calathea.

When I see a plant I like on instagram, I read about it before making the decision to buy or not. Some plants really are just not suited for some environments, and if it would take a lot of effort to just grow something indoors, it's not the plant for me.

with the gloriosum (and all the crawlers, really) it is possible to force the rhizome to curve so that you can keep it in the same pot longer. However, doing so stunts the leaves so they won't reach that huge size (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). My gloriosum should have a rhizome about 43 cm long but I keep forcing it to curve to keep it in the 20 cm pot. The leaves are smaller but the pot looks full so I think it is a fair trade off. It doesn't solve the heat problem, though they can be grown as understory plants in south Florida and they don't seem to mind the heat (days regularly 35 C in the summer) but this may be because they are growing in the ground where the roots stay cooler than in a pot.

I got it on the alocasia I put mine in a glass vessel with a layer or two of leca the rest of moss and they all thrive. They do not like to dry out or be wet or be compact. This has been my success and they go bonkers here! That gloriosum ugh!!!

i got an alcoasia ina a rescue mystery box it had three leaves it lost all but the most beautiful one (2x my head in size). i neglected it all winter putting it in relatively low light. it went through 3 moves and its growing finally a new leaf :D

I have black thumb and killed so many plants from succulents, herbs until indoor plants, and Hoya krimson princess is soooo aljve and thriving from 5 leaves last year now 4 vines and keep propagating now with 40 leaves. I guess bcoz i killed a lot of plants, i searched the hoya needs,, soil is 35% coco coir, 10,% perlite, 30% cactus & succlent potting mix, 10% orchid bark and 5% worm casting, sprinkle of slow released fertilizer. Pls try it, i have hoya krimson queen, matilde and pubicalyx, these are the only hoyas i dare to have 😅😅

Homalomenas are so gorgeous but like you said they can only thrive in a rain forest 😭 they need constant humidity/fine mist environment with indirect medium light which is harder than it sounds to provide!! I bought a Selby that died in like 5 business days! Never again 😅😅

I’ve tried with a snowwhite waffle and accidentally killed her so hard. She’s started so well, but ended poorly. Although it ended sadly it’s made me step up my game.

For me, the plant that I can't seem to figure out the care requirements for is the Geo plant. Bought it last spring and it's almost dead. Almost. I have no idea how/why, I'm genuinely not sure if it's over or underwatering. Not sure if I'm gonna try again. Maybe in the future, we'll see. Calathea on the other hand, I have one (the easy one) and it's genuinely doing great (in the humidity of British climate). Otherwise I stick with succulents xD

What is going on? This video is hilarious and I am in agreement on the plant choices and the issues the average person may have trying to do well with them, but every plant that you have held up looks like sweet perfection. The calatheas you held up look like samples of lush healthy foolage plants. Your Gloriosum has less leaves than your before picture but the remaining foilage is again beautiful sized healthy leaves. How can a person claim that they are dismissing a plant for their poor output when growing and then hold up Instagram looking specimens?

What I noticed in my collection and those of friends is that everyone settles on an aroid that likes their enviorment. I got rid of most philos and monsteras that weren't sentimental because they grow stupid fast. Anthuriums and Hoyas are slow, tough and have the most foliar interest imo. Alocasias are too inconsistent, they either do really well and suddenly crash, or get too gigantic and unruly when happy, coin flip on varigation

The springtail is cause of my losing.Check the soil,periodically use insecticid.
