Great video. In 1999 I bought a 1976 912e for $4.500. I didn't think the car would go up in value but, i liked it. I drove it a lot and some years it was the only car I owned. In 2016 the car had over 260,000 miles on it and I sold it for $16,500. It was nothing special, just a driver.

Satch.... as a fellow Porsche nut I can only commend your excellent videos. I had a 2005 997 Carrera for 2 years and lost nothing when I sold it. Currently have a 2009 Cayman S which seems equal or almost better than the 911. Your videos have made me recognise why I love the brand, forget rms ims woes and listen to a flat 6 propelling you forward in a balanced and refined chassis. Cars that always make me smile. Keep the interesting vids coming, some classic beasts mentioned in this vid that I really want.... Keep saving !!!!!

Gary Steadman thanks Gary I appreciate your comments. Yeah it would be nice to have the money to buy some of these cars, but I often ask myself would a 964 or 993 turbo put a bigger smile on my face?... maybe, but would the smile be 15 times bigger, absolutely NOT ...... in reality the cars in this list are cars that everybody wants, but nobody needs. I have owned 6 Porsche I've the years, my present one is a 997 Targa 4S, in Mercury grey. The secret to longevity is service by experts, use Porsche parts supplied by the parts manufacturer, not in a Porsche box. The best drivers car... Cayman 3,4S, wife hasyayMacan 3.0 Diesel and loves it I preferred my Cayenne, the face llfted model, my 996 3.6was fine but a tad uncomfortable for taller guys, I have driven a 959 on a track, my first was a 930 3.2 Carrera, as you can see I luv em. The trouble is I am now 73 but thankfully my training as a Police Class 1 advanced driver still looks after me! 😁. However should anyone be interested in my 997Targa 4S,it might be orusedyaway from me for a decent price! A good site my friend, keep the channel going and enjoy the brand as much I have over the years👍

Nice video Satch, I just don't think a petrolhead should ever base a car purchase on whether or not the car will appreciate in value: Buy a car because you want it, not because it might make you money! I've been fortunate to own a lot of very nice cars but I've never bought a car with the hope of it appreciating in value, it's never been on my radar and although Porsche have always been a reasonably safe buy from a depreciation point of view, the idea of looking to make money on one isn't something that appeals. Unfortunately there have been too many speculators over the past few years buying up new/nearly new GT cars, as well as the best examples of older models like the 356 and early 911 (and even 912), which has trickled down, even to those cars in need of serious restoration, putting them beyond the reach of any enthusiast willing to consider doing up an old car - the same mentality has also filtered out to other models. Some of the car's you mention were iconic, or limited production cars where a certain price premium is warranted but others have just felt the effect of the speculators I mentioned earlier. I should add, I'm not being critical of you personally 😀, just the actions of those people who put the investment potential of a car near the top of their priority list. The other day I was in an OPC looking at a wonderful 991 R, which as you know contained many of the best bits of the 991 era cars but with a current asking price of £350,000 ludicrously overpriced, simply because someone was hoping to make a killing on the investment potential of a rare model and there's my issue with the whole investment idea - whether someone's hoping to make £20k or £200k, the upshot is it keeps the values of all sorts of cars artificially inflated and restricts access to a handful of collectors. Slow deprecation is nice but personally I'd rather not have those people looking for an investment vehicle (pun intended), to choose Porsche cars. Whether it's an early 356, rare 911 or a 914/24/28/44/68 etc buy them, them drive them, don't worry about the mileage and enjoy some of the best handling cars ever made! You can't take the money with you!! Just my view of course and each to their own - no offence intended Mark 😀 PS: Whenever I read of someone having driven their 356/911 etc for a mega mileage despite its current value, it restores my faith in real owners who love their cars. PPS: Despite disagreeing with you on this subject, I subscribed a while ago - so no need to set your good lady on me 😉.

Mark Davis great points Mark and I agree with what you are saying. I would never buy a car to make money on it, and these cars should be bought and driven. Thanks for watching I always appreciate different opinions and different angles to the videos. Ultimately it’s the drivers that have the real passion for Porsche, and I firmly put myself in that category. 👌👍

@@alsatch_ Thanks for reading and responding to my comments 👍 Porsches should be in the hands of enthusiast owners - maybe there should be a 'Porsches for Purists' movement (I'm jesting) 😉 I admire what people like Nick Mason (Pink Floyd's drummer) does with regards to valuable and rare cars - he still drives and races hi 250GTO, despite its extraordinary market value because he believes cars should be used and not in museums or garaged collections. I take the same view and whatever the value of my 911 and whether it goes up or down, driving it puts a smile on my face that neither money nor recreational chemicals could come close to (again I'm jesting - £100 rollups are fantastic) 😁
@alangil40

@@markdavis911time I agree 100%. These cars should be driven by people who enjoy them. I personally am hoping for this bubble to burst. There are far too many great cars out there of all makes that could be reasonably "affordable" and enjoyed that instead are being hoarded by collectors at outrageous prices and just sitting in garages, never or rarely driven.

The 964 Turbos shown for sale are 3.3 L models, Bad Boy was 3.6 L. I presume for the extra 0.3 L capacity it might be double the price. Over at the Porsche channel, there is a tour of their historic car restoration service. They have a dedicated team for the 959 only and iirc, they are putting about a third of them through there every year. For once this means that owning a 959 is insanely expensive, but if you have the cash, it was probably a good deal to buy the crashed 959 because you dump it on the restoration service and get a re-born 959 back. This may still be a good deal, I assume.

Well Okay, I recently purchased a 2007 Porsche 911 Cabriolet 4. It is an unmolested low mileage for the year car. Now I know it's not the turbo but the production numbers of this car are very low and in the color combo probably even lower. It is a burgundy red with a tan interior all wheel drive 997. The car only has 23,000 miles on it. I personally think I got an awesome deal but for the Rarity of the car I could say it is beyond an awesome deal. You are going to be hard-pressed to find a car like this with this amount of miles

Great vid - couple of points I sell these cars everyday. 964 RS - sold for £154k (down from the 200k), 997 GT2 (lhd - but sold at £100k), 996 GT3 (superb - but like most GT cars unsuitable for the road) 993 Turbo S - yes a Turbo s, at 30k miles and not a whiff of a buyer, 997 GT3 RS - jesus tried to drive one of these on the road, its not a road car. Things I would of included - Modern classics a 981 GTS, 997 GTS (we have sold about 6 in the past months) and a 987 Spyder - All stunning to drive and NOT GT cars - so you can drive them on the roads.....point to note - as mentioned earlier - buy right, cost is accountable, but no-one is really buying these cars at the moment. There are soo many new car limited low number options, think the world is running out of customers......

I have been fortunate enough to see a 959 in the flesh for sale here in Sweden a few years ago... was a mint example asking approx 10,000,000SEK. Magical, but a little out of my budget :P . Meanwhile you failed to mention the 996TT... I just owned one for 2.5yrs, and didn't lose any $$ of the original purchase price. Mind you, it was a rare colour combo (Black over Natural Brown with full leather interior - even the speaker surrounds, air vents, coat hooks etc in leather) done only 69,000km, so maybe an exception to the rule - it was amazing to own and drive. And one error in your vid... the 'Bad Boys' 964 Turbo was the even rarer and more valuable 3.6, not the 3.3. Great vid though! :)

The 3.6 engine was put in the 964 turbo for the last production year 1993-1994, up until that date it was the 3.3 turbo engine as from the 930 turbo. . The 3.6 engine was a single turbo in the 964 and went into the 993 turbo but was then changed to twin turbo.

Another really enjoyable video! I couldn’t afford any of those amazing cars either now or when they were ‘cheap’. . I wonder what you can buy now for £20k ish that will rise in the next 5+ years??

In reality not many of use cand afford these high end prices which is a shame, the values are so high that people (not all) are scared to drive them and want to protect their investment. Thanks for watching I really appreciate it. Next video is out on Thursday. :-)

I think that people who spend their time and money to buy and maintain and preserve these lovely Porsche sports cars are doing a wonderful thing. No doubt Porsche owners enjoy their great cars very much. But I would not trust that any of these cars would make for an appreciating investment. Internal Combustion Engine cars are obsolete. Most people will be replacing their ICE car with an electric vehicle within the next 10 years. Under this environment I just do not believe that the collectible market for ICE cars will remain unaffected. Maybe certain models like the ones featured in this video will continue to appreciate, but in general no one is going to want to buy an ICE car within the next few years if they can afford to buy an EV instead.

Whatever model you buy, just don't over pay for a car that may have more miles relative to remaining examples and it better in in truly excellent condition. If you like to drive them, adding milage will eat away at your potential resale, so decide if it's an investment or if you want drive and enjoy.

I think out of those cars the 987 R will be most likely. I think the 981 will drop more before prices level off. Good cars if you don't mind a small amout of depreciation, but if you want one as an investment, don't buy it yet. Thanks for watching :-)

joseph worley I think they will be classics eventually. The mileage on that car is brilliant for resale value, and so long as the rest of the car matches the mileage you will probably have one of the highest price 986’s in the country. The problem of these is that they were so popular and sold a lot of them, which ultimately makes them less sought after as there are plenty of them around. But they WILL rise in price.... just not yet. Thanks for watching appreciate it 👍👌

How about the 997.2 targa as one climbing in value? Harder and harder to find here in the States. They have bottomed and will only climb in value. Wish I could find one reasonably priced before they get climb out of my reach!

In all honesty Andy, in the long term I think the prices on these will drop further. Certainly in the UK. They are not over common, but I cant see them sitting at the same price of a GT3 and will ultimately drop. That is of course only my opinion, and based on my market here in the UK. Thanks for watching I appreciate it.

Generally, the Targa variant in 996 or 997 spec carries a price penalty in the secondary market as it weighs 130 lbs more than either the Carrera 4 or 4S that is based on, and it carries that weight in the worse possible place - high up on the car. Combine that with softer springs and dampening and what you get is a heavier, slower and number version of the underlying car. That doesn't really attract purists/collectors. That being said, I think the 997.2 is the sweet spot of water cooled P cars because of the upgraded interior vs the 997.1, the DFI motor, which ended the dreaded IMS problems inherent to all m96/m97 motors from 1999-2008 and, finally, it is the last 911 with hydraulically assisted steering, so much better road feel vs the 991 (especially early 991s).

A couple of detail things really irked me about this video. Firstly the 964 Turbo. There were two versions made, the 3.3 and the 3.6. The photos were a grab bag of both. They made buckets of the 3.3 which are relatively easy to pick up with prices falling. The bad boys car was a 3.6 of which they made for one year. These currently start at around 180 GBP. A good one 230-250 GBP. Same for the 997 GT3 RS. You show a mixture of .1 and .2 photos but the current prices for the cars are quite different as is there future value prospects. The .1s were 3.6litre while the .2s were a 3.8litre. The orange car is a .1. Prices on these cars have fallen a lot in the last 6-12 months Similar comments on the 964 RS. You show a grab bag of pictures of 3.6 and 3.8. Right now in the U.K. there are around 12 x 3.6s or sale so are reality easy to pick up. Prices have fallen by over 30,000 GBP on these cars in the last 12 months. The 3.8 is an entirely different matter. They only made a small handful of these cars and they sell for over 700,000 GBP. One recently sold for over 1.0m.
