I truly love Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker. Yeah, sometimes there is a foolish dialogue, but I mean, I really like the guy, and it breaks my heart every time I see him turn to the dark side. The best part about his acting are his facial expressions; you can see the joy, hapinnes, and concern when padme tells him she's pregnant, and he doesn't have to say a word for us to understand that; on the other hand, when he's in mustafar all alone, we can clearly see he's in pain, that he knows it is not the best way but he feels it's the only path to follow. So yeah, Hayden did a great job

It's kinda unfortunate that these movies define his presence in Hollywood. He's a good actor, but these are the only blockbusters he's starred in. Everything else was more niche in comparison, but everything else was where he got to really show what he could do.

The scripts were written like a half baked quasi-Shakespearian play, that he and Portman had to act out so unnaturally it came off looking like it was done by high schoolers. Both actors are great actors, Portman especially has really shone in several films since. Yet, sadly, both Anakin and Padme were stronger characters in the Clone Wars series, entirely due to the differences in writing.

Qui-gon was the wisest most notably because he wasn't afraid to speak out against the incompetent and arrogant Jedi leadership, try new things, etc. I feel the same about Duku before he left the order, as he and Qui-gon both had this ethos. After Duku left though, whole different story, as he betrayed his principles in the most egregious way, far more than if he just toed the failing Order's and Republic's lines.

@@atlasmonkeyleon they hated the prequels because they were bad - not different. Terrible writing, terrible dialog, stiff and stilted acting - though, having seen things these actors have done since, it’s almost certainly the directing and material that was the problem because none of the actors are bad actors. Some of this top ten list certainly rings true though - particularly injecting new ideas into Star Wars, a new aesthetic, and some new and (what would later become) interesting characters (Binks excluded). The prequels on their own though - not viewed through the lens of The Clone Wars - are just objectively bad films.

@@ryhanon7 you just described the OT, with the only difference that in the OT there were not good actors at all. OT fans that hated the prequels hated them because they're frustrated 👌🏼😉 star wars was always bad in certain things, OT and prequels. People just hated the prequels because they were not from their time. But the movies were just star wars, with more technology to make it, and MUCH MORE SENSE in the building of the movie. Ffs. Just look at the damn truth people...return of the jedi is really shameful as writing and movie structure. All of the prequels movies are much more complex and much more deep on what they treat. They weren't perfect , but it's because dumb people that said "prequels are bad !1!1!1" that we got the sequels. So fuck all of those people !

@@JuanVargas-ob1dd LOL. The prequels had zero deepness in the story arc. It's true that there is hints at something deeper on many levels (the corruption of Anakin, the stiffness and outdating of the way of the jedi, the power corruption on political level, the militatisation of democracy, the unicity of life and expandability of clones) but everything was written by someone who doesn't seem to care or know how to act on those hints. Lucas is a terrific world builder, but he seems more focused on what looks cool and sound cool in a world than actually making sure things stick, both storywise and from the actors. Jumping to the next scene and setting as quick as possible instead of focusing on story telling. He reminds me of a Dnd's Dungeonmaster who's incredible at crafting a world settings, maps and dungeons but can run a game properly because it bores him to interact with his players. That's why you have a cardboard villain like Maul. Design was beautiful and Park brought him to life and gave us by far the best fighting scene in the prequels, but zero substance to him on who is this character and why he's there. You have a Count Dooku that have an awfully intriguing discussion with Kenobi duriung his reveal at 2/3 of AotC only to end up at the typical carboard villain that we only see as the fallen jedi who's now a Sith because everything is corrupt. Zero dev on this one and more head scratching on his motivations because we had to go quickly to the next villain who looks cool. Enter now Grievous who we never saw in the prequels, let's have an arc with him : if we catch that guy it's going to end the war! Why ? Because the script says so ! Same shit with Anakin. At no point, we see a Jedi falling. All we see, is that from right off the bat, Anakin is an unloveable asshole. He never act or behave like someone who'd be appreciate by anyone. But Padme fall in love with him and Obiwan loves him to death like a brother. Why ? BECAUSE THE SCRIPT SAYS SO. The reaction of the council to everything is based on : the script says so. Council says Anakin is too close to the Chancellor and they don't trust him to be a Jedi, let's have him spend more time with him. Nothing is backed by anything. More than eager to give us a scene of videogame level design with a automated assembly line than give us anything meaningful that makes sense Believe me, I recon that 20 years later, there is a good outcome of the movies, they expanded the universe tenfold and give us materials to come. But you all retconning a lot of stuff retroactively from other materials to excuse and rectify the gazillion downfall of the prequels. But i won't say the prequels are good because of that. In my eyes, they're terrible movies. Please stop telling me i'm dumb ''because sequels are bad''.

And just the fight scenes in the prequels in general. I loved seeing the elaborate choreography of the fight scenes (cgi or not) and that they better show you how strong the Jedi are. I love the originals but at the end of the day there were still aspects that were confined to the technology of the times. That also though is what has made rogue one and the Mandalorian so special. They have given lots of the original characters their badass moments that technology of the time prevented.

@@captainnes8520 I am not saying the CGI in the movies was flawless because it absolutely wasn't. When it comes to the fight scenes though, they benefited from the technology that wasn't around in the 70s and 80s. The prequel light saber battles were higher energy, more movement, etc. You didn't get anything near that level with the original trilogy. Great Vid! I love Episode 1 and 3. When George Lucas made his first movie, he had to adapt his story to make it more appealing for a broad audience. Hence, its simplicity with bad guy ( Vader) vs the good guys. It was a light, fun and comedic adventure. He could not go so deep when introducing the full universe or full character arcs. Once he had the fan base.... he added depth in episode 5/6 (especially 5). AFTER the revolutionary/historical success of that trilogy, of course George got free reigns for the prequels. He got to tell his story, with as much details as possible, can't blame him for that. I was a 90s kid, yes there's nostalgia, but who doesn't like backstory. Anakin needed his story to be told. Star wars needed its universe to be expanded. Could episode 2 have been better, sure, but the same could be said for Episode 6 which was only saved by the Luke vs Vader at the very end! We should all be grateful. True Star Wars fans look at the big picture and appreciate the creativity and imagination we were privy too.

I was 22 when TPM came out, and have never been a prequel (or Jar Jar) hater. As such, I have a few finer points to debate: 1) Midichlorians: while I've heard the argument countless times that it takes away from the mystery of the Force, I would counterpoint that it does nothing of the sort and is actually logical. The Jedi Order, being an organized group as they appear to be (at least prior to the Clone Wars), would require a means of measuring the POTENTIAL of a Force user. If anything, TPM overall adds a greater air of mystery with Qui-Gon's name "the Living Force" especially as it seems he turns out to be right about a great number of things and why he is considered a maverick at the time. 2) Criticism of the portrayals of Anakin: Slavery defined Anakin Skywalker's life: born into it, feeling stifled by the Order, and more or less Palpatine's lapdog as Vader. For Mr. Lloyd and Mr. Christensen, it's less wooden acting and more an interaction with non-Jedi that causes Anakin's seeming stiffness, particularly with Padmé. It's not like there's a Dating 101 class at the Jedi Temple. He talks about sand in AOTC because that's something he knew intimately for the first nine or so years of his life. He's contrasting something he absolutely hates with one of the only people that has a positive effect on his mood, particularly not knowing the fate of his mother. (I'm not saying the script and direction are flawless, but I believe that was the goal, to show Anakin as awkward for that particular scene.) 3) This point is less direct debate and to build upon the final point of cohesiveness among the prequels. Another argument that is commonly made in critique of the TPM in particular is the senate debate scenes. But these are important to world (galaxy) building and add depth, and continue throughout and even into the beloved TCW series. The larger amount of time spent in TPM, when viewed as a mere component of the whole trilogy, isn't even all that much. They actually become interesting when you know every lightsaber slash, blaster bolt and turn of the pod race. If the Clone Wars deserve greater coverage from an almost offhand remark in ANH, so does the Galactic Senate (though certainly not as much!).

The final duel between Obi Wan and Anakin was going to be at the end of The Attack of the Clones, rather than the Revenge of the Sith. George Lucas, unlike JJ 'Sieve' Abrams, was a major stickler for keeping details of his movie under wraps. One of the people in charge of updating the movies PR website either put up pictures from the duel or a clip from the actual scene (pre-SFX). Lucas was peeved, removed the spoilers and fired the guy. Massive rewrites were done for not just the ending of the second film, but also the entire final movie. The third movie was going to be about Darth Vader and the Inquisitors hunting down the last of the Jedi, and would have shown Obi Wan on Tatooine and Padme on Alderaan. One of the advantages of having three years between movies is to have ample time working on scripts, and do reshoots as necessary without crunch-time. Something that Disney didn't quite understand.

I have never understood the appeal of toxic fandom, of tearing things down. I have always enjoyed finding logical ways that films like Star Wars work. It helps sustain suspension of disbelief and makes films more fun. Mythology is meant to be communal, we all add to the works of others. It also makes for some great theorizing. So metachlorians make the force scientific instead of magic. It is supposed to be a part of our real universe, even if it is quite distant is space and time. Isn’t magic just science we don’t understand?

It’s called “duel of the fates” because if Qui-Gon fights Maul first and dies, Anakin’s fate is the dark side after growing to hate the Jedi and Obi-Wan’s teachings. If Obi-Wan fights Maul first and dies, Anakin and Qui-Gon’s fate might have been to reform the Jedi order or start their own.

Such an awesome video. So refreshing to hear someone praise the prequels for a change. As a Millennial, I grew up with them too and, although they are flawed, I still adore them, particularly Obi-Wan, Padme and Palpatine's portrayals. Love how level-headed, fair and honest this video is and how it spreads such positivity about three, not perfect, but criminally underrated films. I really like The Mandalorian, but I'm so sick of hearing about how it's "saved Star Wars" after the supposed "diasters" of the prequels and sequels. 🙂

Thanks for this. I’ve been working my way through The Clone Wars and decided to revisit the prequels recently (I was in that camp that didn’t like eps. 1 & 2). Since watching TCW and, quite frankly, the current state of politics. I’ve found a much greater understanding and appreciation for the prequels... And yes, the bullying by so-called Star Wars “fans” is quite disgusting when you weigh it’s real consequences for these actors.

I'm not really a Star Wars fan but I've always loved the Prequels. I loved how it delved further into the small hints we were given in the originals about the world before the Empire, showing us the Jedi at their peak and even showing us hiw Anakin became Vader. But for some reaon everone around me just hated these with an almost religious passion. But everytime I asked why, all they could say was "they are bad" or had no answer at all. SO I could only conclude that they hated them because "it was cool" and because others hated them. So it's really nice to see people actually liking these movies now.

The best decision made for the entire franchise was Episode 1’s lightsaber speed. Original trilogy was a bit slow, however it does perfectly encapsulate how one would act using a stick of pure energy that can slice through any matter like butter. Episode 1 Jedi’s were both cautious and skilled, so it really felt like more of a battle of the minds than it did a battle of might. From episode 2 to 3 and then 7-9, the lightsaber action just kept getting faster. Episode 3 was definitely the worst in that, but the battles just became more of a spectacle than a grounded and dangerous fight to the death.

My problem with the sequels is that I'm not engaged in the story. The reason for me is because they feared working in Star Wars and didn't dared to be creative. The OG trilogy and sequels makes you empathize with the characters and made you wait for how the story would unleash. In other words prequels and OG Star Wars aged as fine wine and the sequels are fading away.

Thanks for making this great video. Personally I did marathons over and over, and always had a blast with the prequels, especially Episode II and III. I is great, I concur (I love the sando monster!) but you have to delve a little deeper, like you said about the Duel of Fates. Ah, the sequels. I strongly dislike Episode VII, sorry. I understand and laud the effort of paying homage to Episode VI, I understand that it all makes sense in the end, since the First Order wanted indeed to pay homage to the Empire, but I find it a bit inconsistent. On the contrary, I loved Episode 9. Conversely, I understand why many people don't like it, but Palpatine's return was like a cliff to hang on for me. Overall, I think the sequels are great too, and that the part of the fanbase who pestered Boyega, Rose Tico (can't remember her real name, sorry), Gina Carano, or even the Chinese actress who played live action Mulan, are truly horrible people, detached from reality and common sense: that's their job, and they're not responsible for the script. People blame the massive CGI use in the Prequels. Well, you try to do something like that. Are you all film directors or costumists or computer whizes? No. A big thank to the meme creators who helped restore the love in those three essential movies!

As some of you know, I've always maintained that complaining about Hayden Christiansen's delivery in the prequels should be aimed at George Lucas for writing crappy dialogue. For those of us who've been around long enough to remember the interviews with the actors of the original trilogy, they were quite vocal about his scripts foibles. I clearly remember Carrie Fisher telling interviewers of her conversations with Lucas regarding their clunky content, even quoting one passage she struggled with and telling him, "George, it's one thing to sit at the typewriter (no word processors back then, folks), but trying to wrap your tongue around it is something else!" Coupled with his unfamiliarity with the science and terminology---not exactly rare in filmdom---you get stuff like "parsecs" measuring time instead of distance, overuse of the adjectives "thermal" and "century" instead of "sentry," etc. Christiansen is credited with being very good in other, better written, dialog. (Reminds me of the hate people used to give actors of radio and TV "Daytime Dramas" or my dad's dislike of actor Victor Jory for portraying villains so believably.) Happy New Year, everyone! Stay safe.

Man I love the prequels, every reason on here was spot on. My first film I watched in theaters was Revenge of the Sith, before that I watched Attack of the Clones on repeat. Clone Wars just extended that love to my teenage and adult years. Also the #1 reason is one of many why I can't like the Sequels. "They (the prequels) had an actual plan". As much as the prequels just fit Star Wars and explain how the OT even came to be, the sequels just don't fit and make the time line both confusing and contradictory to what was already there

My biggest gripe about the prequel trilogy was the glossing over of why Anakin chose to join the dark side. The Clone Wars did a fantastic job of alleviating that oversight and I completely agree that it makes the prequels better. However, the dialog between Anakin and Obi-Wan during their last fight in Revenge of the Sith will always be painfully lame.

I think each sequel trilogy episode was worse than the previous one, because of all the retconning done, even to things from the earlier Sequel episodes. VII is kinda ok, but VIII less so (for me, mainly because of what they did with Luke) and I'd rather not speak about IX. To me, the Sequel Trilogy is not canon, whereas the Prequels and the Original episodes obviously are.

The prequels started my love of Star Wars. Episode I was the first movie I remember seeing in the cinema. My dad rented the OG trilogy later on that week and I was hooked. The prequels are way better than the sequels if for no other reason than actually having a clear story to be told. Episode II I like more than most cause I know what Lucas wanted it to be an epic intergalactic war movie but also a tragic romance and a paranoid political thriller (which dominated the box office in the 70s before Star Wars). Episode III is the best movie ever to me after V and IV. The only thing I would change from the prequels is I would’ve introduced Anakin at a slightly older age. That way, Episode II could focus on the great Jedi/war hero he was. Besides that, the prequels were amazing to me. I acknowledge them as imperfect and not quite as great as the originals but I still love them. Without them, Star Wars wouldn’t be as important to me as it is.

I agree with most of this and have always enjoyed the prequels, and like you enjoyed the immersion at the time with PC games for the Phantom Menace. It was great to see advent of the design of the Empire in both the Trade Federation and the Republic armies and their tech. There are still some clunkers; - as mentioned, there was no benefit in writing C3PO into it. We get it, memory wiped, but why didn’t the Lars family remember him? He lived with them! - the heavy use of CGI in II and III has not aged well, it’s surprising watching some documentaries how much parts of the scenes were physically modelled, but big parts of EpII look likely people superimposed onto a video game - Yoda is fighting along with the Wookiee’s when the republic turns on the Jedi order, and in the whole planet of the things, Yoda happens to be friends with Chewbacca, which makes him old and also a bit odd he’s willing to eat Han in their film together, Solo. And it’s never mentioned after Luke nearly freezes to death after nearly himself being lunch “Oh yeah Yoda, good mate of mine. FYI he’s a little green troll so you know what to look for”. The need to introduce too many known characters is nauseating. - ROTJ: “how much do you remember of your mother?” Nothing, she died on an asteroid after giving birth and went back home to Naboo. “The force is strong in my family... my mother had it...” did she? I never saw that? The sequels at least showed Leah having abilities (let’s ignore that total horse manure where she survives vacuum off space and supermans back aboard her ship), and tantalisingly hints that Finn is sensitive. But nothing for poor old Padme in the films... On the sequels, can’t agree on ep8, I like 7 but walked out of the cinema thinking what on earth was that? And that was before the backlash. I actually felt better about 9 at the time of watching but the more times I watch it, the less it makes sense, and oh, Rey is actually offspring of Palpatine’s clone, not granddaughter, so genetically, he’s also her dad. But you have to buy a book... But yes back to the prequels, all in all, I have always enjoyed them, was always amazed how dark it went when Anakin chopped up kids, and even now find myself thinking “no, don’t do it!” as soon as Windu’s hands get Skywalkered off.

The original draft of what became A New Hope, which was actually called "The Adventures of Luke Starkiller", had midichlorians in it as being the way the Jedi and Sith use the Force. And it also said Vader was a Sith Knight. People claim the prequels created these terms, but they were there from the beginning. As was Palpatine's name and previous position as "President of rhe Galactic Republic", which was of course changed to Chancellor.

Honestly, I think Star Wars is at it's best when George Lucas has ideas, and someone else executes them. The original trilogy proved this, the clone wars proved this, and the Mandalorian proves this. It's just beyond stupid that when Disney bought Star Wars, their approach to making a new film series to essentially return on their investment, was to toss it between creators. Those movies are that writing exercise where one person starts a story, then it passes to another person to continue it with no input, and so on. You remember that exercise in writing class. Did it ever turn out a coherent product? But yeah, the Star Wars fanbase can be toxic, and I feel that the way they reacted to both the prequels and the sequels is appalling. Yes, the sequels are clumsy and cluttered. But they're exciting, the acting is great, visually they're the most different from anything Star Wars had done before because different directors were using different styles, and it does have great ideas, even if they're not executed right. Rise of Skywalker was practically written to try and satisfy the mob, and nothing you say will convince me otherwise.
