These videos are a great supplement to your online classes. lol I have my work cut out for me, as I am only about 10% into lesson one, and I already knew a lot of that. But I took the beginner class as much better to be ahead of the class than behind. I like your having the strokes written down on this video, as I sometimes have trouble keeping up with what you are doing, especially since I have to reverse it all because of limited use of right hand. But these beginner rhythms are fun because I can learn them and play even while I am taking the classes.

Amazing! A little tricky yes if you’re playing everything in reverse. But doable ☺️

Hi there! Thanks for your videos! I have the same drum as you do.. I have a question about tuning. I’m not happy with slaps and tones.. they sound pretty much the same( the technique seems to be fine). So I’m thinking may be the problem is that the drum isn’t tuned well.. I’m afraid to overstretch the skin.. what should I do?? Thanks in advance
@DjembeMaster
@DjembeMaster 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! It’s good to me careful with overtuning, although I’ve never broken a Remo skin by tuning the djembe too tight. Since I don’t play traditional slaps and tones, I cannot tell you much. I’ve only found the right spot in tuning for me by listening to the open slap that I do. I guess the slaps and tones you’re looking for may be found by using a traditional rope-tuned professional instrument. But if you still want to experiment with your Remo, just make sure to stop tuning higher when you feel the drum key start to become much heavier to turn 🛑

As a beginner ( 1 week) I am uncertain as well . I have the same Remo (Adikara sp?) for the past two days I ve been all over the place on the the drum trying out., slaps ,Bass ( fist technique) and slaps ( wrist rollover with my thumb) as for tone I don’t hear any difference from the Bass ( maybe muted somewhat) Tuning ? I have no way of determining this . Seems very tight as it is Loving it!

Got the 14 remo, great in wet environments outdoor and life span skin, not as pleasant for hands and hears, or if banging hard. I tune all djembe like this, pressing hard wt thumb in middle of skin , the skin is not visually moving 1 inch or so away from thumb to the perimeter. I put some bit of metallic tape pieces on skin to remove bits of Ping ringing . No matter what you do, a Goat skinned big wood djembe in good conditions is much more awesome to bang on and feels and hear, hold between legs, but the remo 14 is awesome for durability, tuning, light and normal banging, camping(I destroyed one goat skinned djembe after I left outdoor humid overnight and humidity shredded it like wet paper, another one left in hot sun to tighted skin shrank and ripped). And looking at this video and other he makes, great for studio and light playing fast style, nice. Goat skin are finicky, require tuning, not as long lasting by a mile.

Could you post the Bass right left Notes ? I find it little confusing as your left seems to be doing slaps And your hand is definitely doing the bass .

Usually CAPITAL letter means loud stroke, small letter is quiet stroke. The bass is usually loud and I only hit the bass with my right hand 🙂

I’m sorry for annoying! I don’t see you use much tones, they are quite and loud slaps ( As I see it.. may be I’m wrong). Please help me with those slaps and tones, I want to get them sound different. Have a great day !

You are correct 🙂 As far as what I call slaps, they are quiet and loud and also done from the front and side (which also makes a difference in sound). I replyed more about your request under your other comment 🙂

I take djembe lessons from a master drummer from Guinea, West Africa…who teaches the correct technique for your hands… this guy has great modern funky beats, but his hands technique is all wrong for the different tones…he sounds very flat…not sharp at all… but I’m still going to learn his beats and use my African technique from my teacher…
