Except for Japan and South Korea, those countries have tropical weather , so air conditioning is turned on . However , when we have visited Malaysia , specifically Genting highlands, of elevation 1800 meters or 6000 feet, it has been cold , cloudy and rainy .

I was planning to live and retire in Malaysia in 8 years time but I don't mind UAE, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore though - I have visited these places at least twice (Malaysia 5; Thailand 4; Singapore 3; Indonesia 2; Philippines 2; UAE more than 5 times) and went to Japan once. I would probably add Qatar on there as well

My friend worked in S. Korea for about 4 years. They are workaholics. Very poor work-life balance. They are also rather shallow. In most working sectors looks matter more than qualifications, and they are rather sceptical about foreigners

Yeah, I'd say a good western equivalent to compare S. Korea to would be Los Angeles more specifically around Hollywood and Beverly Hills in terms of how things are socially (save for maybe the skepticism surrounding foreigners).

I've been to all these countries except Philippines. I've found all of Asia is very safe, also travelled through China for 5 weeks and was safe day and night. Malaysia is nearly as expensive as Singapore, both aren't cheap for Australians because of our weak dollar. Been to Vietnam several times and have had run ins with the taxi drivers. Went to the huge shopping complex in Dubai. Nothing open and nothing much to do there as I went during ramadam.
