Lions may be good dads to their own kittens, but if they find a female with kittens they will kill them all. The female then quickly comes into season, mates with the new male, and the lion is then a good dad to his own offspring.

I had a black tuxedo male who adopted a female kitten after the mother abandoned her. He taught her to eat solid food, drink water out of a large deep bowl, cleaned her, slept with her, played with her and did everything mom would have done. The kitten loved him and even walked like he did. He had a broken hip that didn't heal right so he walked on his toes. The kitten grew up and loved her surrogate mom all her life.

I’m wondering if male tuxedo cats tend to be particularly paternal. My husband and I adopted a very tiny newborn male tuxedo kitten (Kirby), last summer. Our senior tuxedo cat (Spike), while a bit hesitant for the first few days, took to little Kirby as if he was his own. Spike pretty much trained Kirby how to “cat” and they quickly became a bonded pair. They insisted on eating out of the same dish at the same time (despite how they had two separate dishes), would constantly play together despite the huge age difference, never got into any fights, would always snuggle up beside each other, and in every picture I have of the two of them together it looks like Spike is looking upon little Kirby with pride as if to say “this is my little boy”. Sadly, Spike passed away in March after very unexpectedly being diagnosed with a form of pancreatic cancer. Kirby was devastated, however, it seems little Kirby has inherited the sweet and gentle nature of Spike, having learned from him. Major Mufasa and Simba vibes ❤️

@@oldfogey4679 I think you just have to follow carefully to see how things are. Cats are as different as we are. My second male cat here with us (the son of the former) I would have had doubts about letting him near kittens but would investigate my suspicions more closely with caution. He tends to see anything less than himself as prey or danger? But he didn't hurt a kitten that had wandered away from home and turned up at our place. So I'm still learning😊

We had a male cat and female cat both orange. The female was intact. The male was only 6 months old and had an appointment to be neutered. He kept trying to get busy with the girl but she was older than him and rebuffed his efforts. My roommates laughed and him and teased him. They said he was too short to get the job done anyway. I took him to be neutered and thought nothing more of it, until a couple of months later. I came home from work and my roommates female cat was in my closet with a litter of 3 orange kittens! 2 males that looked like my cat and one male that looked like her. They were indoor cats and the only ones in the home. She tried to keep him away by moving the kittens around the apartment but he kept following and wanted to help with the kittens. He was very gentle and sweet with both her and the kittens. We moved to different apartments a couple of months later. The kittens went with the mom and I was alone in an apartment with the dad. Six months later my old roommate called and said they couldn't find a home for this last male kitten. I took him. No introduction was necessary. They both remembered each other and snuggled all the time! They are great together! So this father was sweet and caring and they remembered each other after 6 months apart!

My flamepoint Siamese cat was an extraordinary dad, and all ‘his kittens’ were feral rescues. He didn’t just groom them or play with them, he taught them ‘martial arts’ (some amazing moves) and survival skills (e.g. light-colored cats go deep in the bushes when there is even the shadow of a flying raptor). The hardest time for him was when he got ‘kicked upstairs’ to be the grandfather cat, and a younger cat became the dad cat. He was sad. But he got used to it. Very loving and devoted, he is still dearly loved and missed. His favorite ‘son’ very much responds when I bring out a small pillow with the dad cat’s scent on it, and it has been more than 10 years since he was gone. 🙏💙🐾🌌🕊

I actually had a father cat who was the exception to these rules. And when it comes down to it, it's rather surprising! He was a true blue, tough as nails, take no crap from nobody Tomcat! But around kittens, that tough facade melted away. Whenever a mother cat was having her kittens, he'd be there, front and center to witness the event. Once the kittens were all born, he'd shift his gaze from one to the next, almost as if he was counting them, and get this look of joy on his face. If the mothers needed to leave the kittens to eat or use the litter box, he'd climb into the basket with the kittens to groom them and keep them warm. If he heard them crying in distress, he'd immediately check it out, rushing with their mother to go to their aid. As they got older, he'd gently play with them and/or teach them how to fight or defend themselves, bring them the occasional kill and even take them out individually to teach them how to hunt. I remember being completely surprised by the behavior, seeing as it all flew in the face of what I knew and/or had heard or read about a father cat's behavior around kittens!

We found an abandoned tuxedo kitten (6-8 weeks old) and fostered him for about a month. One day we came home and found the kitten with an injured rat. We grabbed the kitten away from the rat (almost as big as the kitten) and our blue point siamese male cat came out out from under the truck, caught the rat and brought it back to the kitten. It looked like he was teaching the kitten to hunt. One more anecdote about siamese male cats being fathers.

We had a few generations of Siamese cats under our roof at one time. They are excellent father's and will groom them and play with them and cuddle with them too, basically giving momma cat well deserved break. They can also be disciplinarian of the family. Especially at feeding time, dad cats won't allow their kittens to get too rough with each other or steal food during mealtime. A quick swat on the head ended the bad behavior, when dad cat was in the room. Father cats teach their little kitten's to play, like the tail game, daddy would swish his tail on the floor and the little kitten's would try to grab it. Ours taught his kittens to play ball and use their scratch posts too. ❤

I knew a couple who had a male Siamese cat. He mated with the neighbor's female Siamese. The owners of the female gave the owners of the male one of the female kittens, but they made the mistake of separating the kitten from the mother too early. As a result, the daughter continued to try to nurse off her father, even after a year. At first, the father would push her away, but the daughter was so persistent that he eventually gave up and let her do her thing. Never separate a kitten from its mother until he/she is fully weaned.

I had a cat that let two different kittens “nurse” off of him. They were both 6 -7 weeks old. The first kitten “nursed” of the male cat until he was 14 months old. Some kittens just really need to comfort of nursing even after weening. Shoot, I have a rescue cat that acts like a nursing kitten with me. He’s five years old! Thankfully, he’s never tried to “latch” onto to anything, but he has his mouth right up next to me and kneeding like his life depends on it. I have never in my life seen a full grown cat do this. And he had been on the streets for some time. He was very hard to get close to at first. Took five weeks before we really heard him purr. He’s still pretty reserved. Until he needs to be a kitten again. 😂

@@MFPhoto1 I think so to. He’s had a pretty hard life with lots of disappointments and heartaches. Until we got him. He’s still pretty guarded and has a bit of ptsd (according to the vet), but when we lay down, he’s the most contented boy! The first time he laid down next to me, all the tension left his body and he purred like a fright train. Five minutes later, he realized he’d let down his guard, he actually stamped his feet as he walked away growling and hissing at me. The next day he stayed longer and no “outbursts” when he got up. That was December. I think he’s finally realizing he has a real family this time. He’s home.

I had a black cat that seemed like a super dad. He played with, groomed and spent over night with his kittens, guiding them out of our backyard to the neighborhood. Once the kittens were older, he moved onto his other kittens. I know because I would walk our dog late a night and saw him with other kittens when I thought he had gone missing. Additionally, I heard black cats in the States are part Siamese, so that makes sense. So fortunate for my kittens. Note, when those kittens got much older and they'd see him, they'd submit/lie down in front of him so he'd lick the top of their head like he used to. Sadly, instead he just smacked him.

Having rescued many street cats; I have noticed that male cats are most loving and willing to accept kittens that are not theirs. They even teach them to groom. The male cats also have long term relationships with their favorite female. A female street cat named Poppy would always mate with the same male ( a rotund thug called Bubba) even though there were other males around. They had a long term relationship of 4 years till he was run over by a speeding BMW ( as per neighbor witness).

When we got a kitten we were kind of worried about how he would react but surprisingly he became a good father to her. She would try and play with him and he would very tolerant. On a morning if she not arrived back to the house for morning feed he would not eat until she got back. When he got too old to climb a fence to get to the cat flap she would come in and tell us he was waiting to be let in at the front door. After he died she even took on some of his mannerism. Two little stories... My brother brought home a stay male while he was still a kitten. It was about after the the only cat I ever knew and loved passed away and I immediately latched onto to the little boy (Smokey). I was 13 at the time. So every few years, we ended up with another kitten. Each time we brought one in, Smokey would be the welcome wagon and mother the kittens. He cleaned them, showed them where their food was, litter box, and so on. Sometimes he hovered too much and the kittens didn't want it, lol. But over all, he was always very close with all of them as the grew into adults. And mind you, he was also an alpha! He would show his dominance, but still show Hus affection as well. He was an amazing boy, and I loved him fiercely. Second story... This is recent, happening for the last for few weeks and still is. So my boyfriend has a fairly large yard in with he planted various trees, flowers, and other plants. Almost looks like a rain forest but in a controlled manner. The strays in his neighborhood always find their way there because it's looks wild, is much safer for them, and they have shelter and food since my boyfriend takes care of them. Recently he saw some small kittens there along with their mother, a beautiful calico. What's shocking is the father is also with them all the time, watching the babies while the mother is away. He's a huge orange and white long hair. Very fluffy boy. We know he's the father to at least half of little ones. They look just like him, same color, markings and long fur. The others look similar to the mom, but could also be his too, we don't know for sure though. Since we can't get too close, we have to stand back and take pictures. Sometimes they're closer to the house and we see them through the window. We do often see them lying all together in the back under some bushy plants. The female wasn't too skittish before the kittens, but now that she has them she's a lot more cautious. The big boy has always been scared of people and will run if anyone walks in his direction. At some point we would like to do a trap/neuter/release with them, but not now because of their babies. We don't want to interfere and scare them off. There really isn't anywhere where else safe enough for them to live besides the yard they're in now. My boyfriend lives in a city and having a yard like his is pretty much unheard of there. Plus all of his neighbors have 'not so friendly towards kitties' pit bulls. They would possibly get killed if they're chased away. AND his neighbors are something to be desired as well. The dregs of society tend to live on his block. They're just horrible. I don't want to get into it here, but I'll say this... They often gather outside my bfs fence late at night to early morning just partying, then fights break out...shots are fired, etc etc. Just a very bad area and I'm trying get him to move in with me. So anyway we have to be very careful...in more ways than one. Also, my bf can't take in any more cats. He's already rescued 11 since he moved in and has now have 6 left. Half were really old and 5 died in the past two years for various reasons. He can't handle the pain of loosing anymore. He's a very loving and sweet man.

Your a lucky lass. And he sounds wonderful.Know what u mean about dregs. Was told about stray cat over2yrs ago.Been feeding n loving him ever since.A brat & it's Gran moved here recently. It is supposed to have ahdh or whatever.I think it's just a brat.I made a shelter for my sweet boy, which was wrecked. The kid lives at the end of a lane & yelled at me to "get out of my alley!"It's not his,it's HA property.About a wk ago,I went to feed him&he was coming to me,when the family living in the house at the start of the lane, came in a bunch, told me puss had a home & spoke about drug dealing & private property.I was polite, now regret that.If he has a home, why was it left to me to fix his tail when he got it hurt somehow?I cannot bear to go passed that way now.Miss him so much.Unfortunately the household would see me enter the lane, even if I go over the wall. That cat seems2be out 24/7.He did live in a kind of storage place until the Bengal, also out to all hours & who lives with the brat, chased him off. Then he retreated to a wild gdn, unused,in said lane.I am so sad not to see him.He would greet me with little mews& rolls& accepted strokes & kisses as well as food.I hear the woman has horses too.I have tried to speak to her but she is both rude & unfriendly. That kid is 9.He & his gang run over & play in people's gdns, pull plants, play soccer & leave balls & toys everywhere.I honestly don't think Snow Cloud does have a home. But if he does,is not well cared for.Sadly,am an older woman on my own as one son lives in another area & now second son has moved out to further his career.Third son does his own thing. And my partner passed some years ago. So,no back up.Also have other problems.I wish I could just grab him & my own three&go home. But it's not possible due to stupid decision made yrs ago.You make your bed,as my mother used to say.Well,I will know next time round.LOL.

@@susanmccormick6022 Thank you, he is! And I'm sorry to hear about those two moving in, being the way they are. Even if he does have ADHD, it sounds like he's a spoiled brat! I've had my fair share of those kids too... I know how you feel about this cat... Similar thing happened to me a few years back. Every morning after dropping someone off for work I would feed this cat near a trailer park. I saw him when I pulled in to check my tires. He was SOOO skinny and flea ridden, but he had a collar with a name tag. So he belonged to someone but obviously he wasn't taken care of and left to wander around outside. I had cat food in my car that I just bought so the first day I saw him, I fed him and he was hungry! So I did this every day until someone who lived in one of the trailers came out and sort of yelled at me for doing it. Said he had a home, belonging to someone up the road in the park. I'm thinking, yeah and they're doing a great job taking care of him too! 😡 So that was the end of it. I forget his name, but that poor cat was always so exited to see me every morning, knowing he would be eating and getting love. Clearly two things he was lacking there. And he was extremely friendly Broke my heart... How people can treat their animals this way is beyond me. I've always treated them like family, because they are! Some people would say I'm a little eccentric when it comes to my fur balls, but they're like my children and I would do anything for them. I don't have children of my own, so the fur balls are it!! So what I had to keep telling myself about that cat in the trailer park was, at least I gave a few weeks of something that he didn't have before and it made him happy. So in your situation, you might have to tell yourself the same thing. At least you helped him when apparently no one else was. You gave him something that he WILL remember. Cats don't forget...

This story is from my friend katherine(rip) Her Male was neutered and never mated, but he was NOTORIOUS for stealing kittens, he'd come to the door hauling one at a time, sometimes coming and going with a whole litter. He even almost died doing this, hopping a fence and snagging pouch and tearing it open. He was extremely dedicated to bringing home the babies for his mom.

When I adopted my youngest, a 5 weeks old kitten, my only son cat naturally started taking care of her. He groomed her, played with her, taught how to eat solid food, and even stimulated her to help peeing. I was surprised as I thought male cats don’t parent, not to mention he was a very timid cat. He always yielded foods to her, let her play with his tail and ears. I’d say he’s the most loving father in the cat world! He left us last fall and I believe he’s happy somewhere safe and warm.

We had a pride of ferrel cats make their home on our back porch. There was one orange male cat that fathered some of the cats of his mate and he stuck around to help out and raise the kittens. He would play with the kittens and watched them while his mate would go hunting. This was opposite to a male cat we called Fancy Cat who fathered a bunch of litters with several of the female feral cats, but was always making the rounds and not sticking around to attend to the kittens.

I adopted two unrelated cats a couple of years apart in age. The older cat (Vince) was very unwelcoming at first but eventually grew into a good play buddy and teacher. The younger cat (Nacho) has never been hurt, but before he learned how to play properly, he made Vince bleed a few times. Vince is always careful to make sure Nacho gets to eat enough and isn’t hurt during their play sessions. He also taught Nacho how to cover his litter and other things to make the living arrangements better.

I am glad they added the Siamese fact. We had a Siamese that was gifted to us. We were told how his father was super attentive to momma and kittens. Our boy was fixed so he never had his own kittens, but he was super affectionate and protective to every kitten that came into our household. I also had some adopted twin boys (possibly bengal mix) that would defend new kittens. We acclimate new cats by having them in a den so everyone can get used to each other. We brought in a found kitten (about 5 months old) and the twins sat outside her cage to defend her from an aggressive female.

They play and have fun and they all gather around outside my compound like one big family. He comes to visit the mum and kid from like 2 -3 times a week. I was really surprised to observe that because I was told male cats tend to be very territorial towards other males even young males and considering he wasn't there its also surprising that he knows that is his child. The cat I adopted was found abandoned as a newborn. A foster mom with a senior neutered male cat took her in. I have been told the male cat wasn't thrilled about the new arrival but still took over parental duties and raised her during kittenhood, teaching her all the proper cat behavior. I adopted her shortly after she was spayed. I thank him for his patience as she is the most well behaved cat I've ever owned. She took right away to solely using scratching posts, to not knock over things on shelves, to stay off of table and shelving units, etc.

Neat presentation. Thank you. I had a Siberian male, Philsbie. At ~ 5 years old, I brought home a 6 week old grey tortie kitten, Xena. She went to him with head bowed low. He sniffed her a couple of times, pawed her head, sniffed again. When she mewed, he started licking her head. He raised her like a daughter. He played with her, cleaned and groomed her, stood guard while she ate, and let her snuggle with him on his sunshine naps. Then at 1.5 year later, an old and feeble veterinarian accidentally killed Xena. It was a whole 6 months that Philsbie was... sad. I watched my little furry friend mourn the loss of his daughter. Things changed when we moved homes and he had other distractions. My friend, Philsbie, passed away in 2017 at the age of 13. :🐱

Both me and my fiance have quite interesting stories regarding father cats. When he was a kid, his grandparents had a huge male black cat. He, like other cats mated a lot and had a lot of offsprings, however, since he had a very good relationship with his owners the cat brought home Every Single Offspring each time they were born! He took each kitten to my fiance's grandparents and showed the kittens to them. I guess it was because of the strong bond between the cat and the grandparents. Now we also have a male cat, he's neutered though, and he was a single cat for a while, then we adopted a kitten. First we were afraid if he'll be hostile towards the new kitten but it only took them 1 day until they slept together cuddling. From that point our male cat taught everything to the kitten and cared for her as if she was his daughter. Now the little girl is 2 years old but our male cat still treats her as his daughter and even lets her "beat him up" in fights.😂 I guess our cat had parental instincts, but again, he's a neutered indoor cat.

We have a black barn cat, who has been neutered, who is strangely protective of kittens. He now has his second adopted litter of 9 (from at least three different litters; one mother we were able to catch and spay) and is almost always found in the barn keeping watch at the entrance. He has never fathered a litter of his own, he was from the first litter on the ranch (which is a story on its own) and was neutered as a kitten. We call him Uncle Bagheera. Bagheera deserves an award. My ancient neutered male house cat, on the other hand, is a colossal a-hole to all other animals. Even the ranch pit bull (RIP; he was a sweet dog) was terrified of him.

It should be clarified here that while dad cats aren't always great with the kittens, if you have both parents in your house and keep all those kittens, the dad will frequently still be rather friendly with them once they're bigger. He'll play with them, lick them, and sleep around them in a lot of cases, and you could end up with a cute little group of kitties running around your house, chasing each other around and flopping to sleep in clusters. Sometimes you might even find four cats all just sleeping on your bed, curled up and cuddly.

When I was a teen, I had a cat that gave birth to two litters. Two of the boys from her first litter were, I'm not kidding, attached to the same placenta, but different colors. (Both were male however.) When the second litter was born the second male from the previous litter played mister mom when the mother was gone. I would joke about it, saying that he was going through an identity crisis. As for #10, while I mostly agree, I also have an argument against it. 16 years ago, (long after my previous cats had been born, and I had moved out of my parents house) I had gotten myself 2 new cats, and the female had 5 kitten (daddy cat staying as far away as he could). Sadly, one of them died, but that's not the point. Most of the kittens, when they grew up did in fact act more like the father. But one of them, who looked exactly like the mother, also acted just like the mother as well. The mother was, what I used to call her, a bit of a socialite. And the daughter showed the same behavior. They both loved to greet people at the door. So that's my argument against #10. And it comes from personal experience.

When we got a new kitten, my mom was CONVINCED our older cat, a female, would be motherly to him- solely because she likes to carry around her toys and sometimes cuddle with them. Big fat nope. I'd heard her hiss maybe twice in her life before this, and she hissed a dozen times in their first meeting, even after proper slow introduction. They would constantly get into fights that could genuinely be vicious, though he did start most of them. After he got to be about 6 months old it calmed down a lot. Unfortunately he's already bigger than her and still bullies her a bit, but she won't try to hurt him in return unless he's going too far. It's mostly playfighting now, thank goodness, haven't seen blood in ages and they can be trusted alone together. Since so many people are in the comments sharing about their good dad cats I figured I'd share about my definitely not motherly female cat lmao. She's the sweetest, gentlest thing in any other circumstance (aside from maybe playing), she used to live with like 5 other (older than her) cats and got along with them great, but she HATED him until he grew up a lot. As a person who hates human children I can't say I blame her lmao

A female cat would need to have recently had kittens to show the maternal instincts, otherwise she would react like any other cat. You can't just plop one cat with another one without a slow introduction to get the cats used to each other; otherwise the two will see each other as invading their territory. As you yourself have written, now the two cats are behaving more friendly, since they had the time to get used to each other. It's unfortunate to say but rather than you female cat being unmotherly, I'd say that this situation was on you...

One of my cats is a male ragdoll named Whitewing (too late to change his name to Santa Claws) and he’s such a sweetie with the loudest purr! Even better, he loves his kittens. Well… one of them. Unfortunately, he clearly favors Queen, who looks similar to her mama tabby cat Ginger. Also, you mentioned cats not recognizing their offspring sometimes. All of my cats are indoor cats, so this might be wrong, but I don’t think Whitewing acknowledges Sandy (the other kitten) as his daughter. He never tries to mate with either of them, but then again I’m pretty sure animals don’t care about inbreeding. Anyway, Whitewing snuggles with Queen and mostly ignores Sandy. Maybe it’s because Sandy doesn’t look like him or Ginger? And no, I don’t think Ginger’s kittens had multiple fathers. If you cared enough to read until the end right here, hello!
