Developers sometimes spend years working on progression systems in games to allow the player to feel like they have a chance without giving them too much of an advantage against enemies. I find cheating undermines this and makes any victories feel undeserved and boring.

I remember from Space Quest 6 there was a level where you had to go through a huge archive to find info on the game's antagonist. If you already knew where the last file was, either by previously playing the game, or looking it up online (you need to find a few other files first in the game!) the narrator goes "Now, now, now...what have we here? You haven't found the clue to this file's existence, yet somehow you know..." then you loose a huge amount of points for cheating.

Wow, you took me waaaaay back to middle school when you mentioned heretic. Used to go to my friends house and we go until you die or give up and switch up. 5:10 South Park: Fractured but Whole. I call MAJOR BS for this one. I was able to guess the code by trying out phrases I'd imagine Cartman would use. No looking it up involved, and he still denied my hacking skills for cheating. I call him a cheater for having a passcode that's easy to crack, but denies access anyways. Instead of a code, use a key you need to acquire. The only time I can remember that Cartman made me mad.

I started doing it in the original Bard's Tale and probably had 50 pages of notes on what each hex value did in Ultima 4. I got a bit stymied when Wasteland had encrypted saves (again, the original). It was just the curiosity that got me rather than the need to cheat and I'm pretty sure that's why most people do it. So, yeah, game developers totally thought about it. I think it's pretty awesome that developers later on seem to rather just let cheating happen and come up with creative ways to wag a finger. Before then though, cheating was getting the game guide. I'm looking at you Infocom!

I remember back in the late 80s, Ultima IV and V, if you weren't mindful of your food you could start starving, taking damage every few steps. If you made it to a town you'd see crops growing in the fields, and you did have the option to just grab from that square like you'd do to pick up any other item anywhere else in the game. If you were REALLY bad (like killing or attacking someone) you'd get the guards chasing you, but stealing food had no obvious penalty to it, other than yelling "STEALING CROPS!" in the status window. BUT the game, being "quest of the avatar", was watching you. There were several things you could do to positively or negatively impact any of the 8 "virtues", and stealing crops would seriously ding your Honesty. Talking with Hawkwind was the only way to get any sort of glimpse into the progress you were making on your virtues, and he would definitely call you out for stealing. And to finish the game you had to get all 8 virtues to 100% and then get "elevated" in that virtue (a quest all its own), so if you ONCE stole after getting your Honesty elevated, BAM you'd lose your elevation in Honesty and have a nasty black ark to make up for in that virtue before you could get re-elevated. Big pain. Actually I'm not certain Honesty was the one bound to crop stealing. Cheating a blind store owner when paying for goods would do it for sure though. And some actions would affect more than one virtue. (killing an NPC would hit five of the eight virtues iirc) I don't recall if cheating a blind clerk would get you a verbal warning - instead of a simple "pay 25 gold Y/N", you had to type in how much you paid. Paying the asking price would bump your honesty. Paying MORE than the asking price would also bump your Compassion. (by any amount - 1 gold more extra enough) I do miss games like that, it's amazing the quality of game play for a game running on an Apple ][e and (four!) 5.25" floppies. And as for the game save file editing, many games back in the day would implement a checksum flag on the save files. (Ultima did not, Wizardry did) Save slots that didn't pass checksum would usually get automatically deleted. While this may have been to weed out corrupted saves, it was probably more to discourage people from editing their save files, or discourage those that were making save file editors. (which were pretty popular at the time) For those unfamiliar with checksums, it's basically a single number usually at the end of the save file, that's computed, based on all the numbers in the save file. So if you change ANY number in the save file, it would create a different checksum. (one crude checksum would simply be to add up all the numbers in the save file, and record the checksum as the total) When the file is saved, the checksum is computed and saved to the end of the file. Then when you open it later, it recomputes the checksum and compares it to what's stored at the end. If they don't match, something in the save file has changed since the game saved it. It's not super secure, but can be pretty effective, especially if you don't know how that checksum is being calculated. (to make an editor for a game used a checksum, you'd need to dig around in the game to figure out how it was being calculated, so you could update the checksum after making changes to the save file)

I also was playing Doom 3 in college back in 1995. I entered a no clipping cheat to go down a steep cliff to explore and the was a sign at the bottom that said cheaters suck. Also, if you no clip at the end boss level and go behind the giant skull there is Bill Gates head on a pile 😁.

In Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, if you take advantage of what seems like a glitch during character creation to give yourself maxed out stats, the game will call you out on it. During the tutorial part of the game the character Jack will call you out and mention about how high your stats are. You can choose to apologize and the game will send you back to character creation to fix your character or you can say that you don’t care. If you choose the second option and continue on with the game you will find that all of the enemies are now much more powerful than they originally were.

I remember that in Warcraft 2, you'd get a rank at the end of every mission. But if you cheated, it would give you the rank CHEATER! and cut your point score by 90% Also, you could cheat in multi-player, but it would give whatever you cheated to everyone. So, if you cheated yourself 10k gold, all your opponents would get it as well. Honestly, that's an amazing way to keep the game fair and balanced ^^

I know a few! One of them is Yokai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and fleshy souls. By adjusting the system clock to the next day to use at the yokai crank, a giant red yokai named gargaros will shane you after you try to log in to the game. Then will trigger terror time a few seconds or minutes later.
