Related to the Iron Maiden German TV appearance: Muse were told to lipsync to one of their songs on an Italian TV show, so the band members just swapped instruments before the "performance" started and spent most of the time goofing off in front of an incredibly confused audience. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2ivhWZ8qbWnmMU

Honestly, the Metallica/Gaga performance won me over as a Lady Gaga fan. She instantly realized that there was a problem with Hetfield’s microphone, and adjusted accordingly without missing a beat. That’s a show-must-go-on mentality that is baked into the DNA of rock music, and a far lesser talent would have run off stage crying.

To be fair to Top of the Pops, it wasn’t just Nirvana, everyone did live vocals over a backing track at that point after decades of fully mimed performances. Rod Stewart and David Bowie both mocked it in the ‘70’s. Rod Stewart and The Faces ended up kicking about a football instead of miming their instruments. Trash Theory has a great video on the best worst TotP performances on KZbin.

I watched the broadcast of Meat Loaf's performance at the 2011 Australian Football League Grand Final. For the first one and a half songs I was confused. Was Meat Loaf experimenting with novel arrangements of his songs? Was the sound setup not working properly? Was the wind affecting the sound? Then, halfway through the second song, the female guest vocalist sang her part perfectly, and it became obvious that the problem with Meat Loaf's singing was... Meat Loaf's singing.

From a live production side, lip syncing makes the most sense. It takes a lot of time to get a mix (setting up microphones, adjusting all the levels etc) for one or two songs, to all the things that could go wrong. I remember that GNR performance. Buckethead did well to his credit, but of course, everyone probably expected Slash and all that. Then Axl, of course, had to be Axl.

Yeah unfortunately that Meat Loaf performance damaged his reputation in Australia for quite a while. A cool fact though, Bat Out Hell is 26 times platinum here, making it the biggest selling album down under.

Pretty much any Meat Loaf performance from the last decade or so of his life is pretty terrible, at least from a vocal standpoint. I think he may have had some hearing loss as he was seemingly unable to find the note a lot of the time. He did do an episode of VH1 Storytellers where he wasn't too bad and his performance as a storyteller along with his stage presence and sense of humour made up for it anyway. But yeah, there's a clip from Classic Albums of him trying to sing along to the recording of "Bat Out Of Hell" and he sounds awful, but then he says "yep, still got it", so I think there must have been something wrong with his hearing in his later years which is very sad as he had an amazing voice when he was young.

Opposite of Hardy at the Royal Rumble, they had Jellyroll preform at the beginning of Summerslam back on Saturday... and it was actually a good performance. His music's not my cup of tea, but the fans there were all for it. And it was smart to have the performance happen then and not hours in before the main event.😂

I would be at fault for not mentioning when Avril Lavigne covered "Fuel," at an MTV Icons tribute concert, *in front of Metallica*, and they had to splice in reaction shots from other performances for the rebroadcast. Because Lars, Kirk, James and (at that point) Jason were *not* into it. It was...It was not good

It really wasn’t fair for a lesser talent like Avril Lavigne to sing a heavier Metallica song in front of the band. It’s too bad they could not get Pink to do it, because she would have pulled it off nicely.

The AFL has a history of sub par/questionable music acts. Thankfully they seemed to learn from the Meatloaf "performance". If you ever do a "rock/metal bands performing at sporting events" video (pretty sure there would be a good AND bad list), make sure to check out Robbie Williams as well as KISS at the AFL grand final.

If I remember rightly as well when 'Tallica and Gaga were being introduced, it was more, "here is Lady Gaga and her band!" 🙄 However huge respect to Lady Gaga for trying to help out James, by sharing her mic with him, when she noticed he was having mic issues. Rather than simply being, "I'm alright, Jack."
