What I would add on my list? Some options, but probably some of them wasn't such hyped as mentioned in video, but what I have in my mind: BRM P15 with V16 engine ATS (italian one) from 1960s when some engineers and drivers left Ferrari to create new team Andretti at McLaren in 1993 new teams in 2010 (mostly Virgin and Lotus maybe not something big, but there was some hope for them)

Here is one: The Arrows years under Tom Walkinshaw. He bought the team, even bought the name rights back from Footwork, hired Damon Hill in 1997 but despite one highlight in Hungary never delivered. Also fell victim to the "nigerian prince scheme" (sorry I could not resist) and later failed due to bad business practices despite having some strong sponsorships.

One hype train that was absolutely disastrous that should've been on this list was Toyota's go around in F1. A team that poured so much in terms of resources, time, effort, and so on into that works team only to be derailed by Japanese auto manufacturer's own hubris and stubborn approach of doing things "the Toyota way" rather than learning to adapt and listening to people on the ground in the team.

That’s an interesting one because they weren’t a *bad* team, comparable to McLaren-Honda or BAR’s first season. It seemed like they were always on the cusp of breaking through but just couldn’t do it. Too bad their final car - completed just as the team shut down - never got to race.
@GreenHornet553
@GreenHornet553 2 жыл бұрын
@@zombiedodge1426 Not just that but it's also interesting because of how they always got in their own way. For example, the team was forced the corporate board in Aichi, Japan to switch from Michelin rubber to Bridgestone because Toyota brass wanted to partner with the Japanese company over the French one. This is was despite the fact that the car was designed around using the Michelin tire compounds than Bridgestone ones and the team in Germany strongly being against the change to the harder Bridgestone tires.

For people who thought AM should be on the list, the list only consisted of projects that had already ended due to their downfall. AM is still in F1, had solid plans to improve for the next 5 years. The managers are still getting their heads around their new role. Who knows, maybe AM would make a radical concept in their next big upgrade or next year that would make them a front runner. Either way, it’s too early to decide after only 2 races.

I was ecstatic when BAR tried to run two different liveries. I am of the opinion that F1 cars should be identifiable at a quick glance; we shouldn't have to squint to see tiny numbers or try to make out what helmet it is (especially since they've grown less graphic and more detailed). We shouldn't have to try and guess which Alpha Tauri has gone off track, or if it's Leclerc or Sainz who managed to overtake... which Red Bull? It needn't be as different as BAR - a different rear wing and airbox would do the trick, or an additional stripe, or huge, visible numbers.

I’d also nominate Damon Hill at Jordan as not living up to the hype. The 1996 world champion joined Jordan for 1998 and despite a poor start for Jordan in 1998, the appointment of Mike Gascoygne as technical director seemed to turn things around with Jordan moving from bottom of the championship to 4th plus a 1-2 finish in Belgium, so there was a lot of hype around the Jordan 199 the following season with Damon being joined by Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Damon being seen as a possible championship contender. However, the season never got going for Damon. He never got on with the new and harder Bridgestone 4 grooved tyres and while Frentzen did win races and was a realistic contender for the title until his retirement at the Nurburgring finishing the season with 54 pts, good enough for 3rd in the championship, Damon could only muster 7 points and a 12th place finish in the championship (the same points and position he achieved with Arrows in 1997), scoring points on just 4 occasions, failing to finish 9 of the 16 races including voluntarily retiring the car at his final Grand Prix in Japan.

Especially given that Rosberg and Lewis weren't as far apart as people thought they were. Between 2010-2012 we had no idea where Rosberg was.

Degrading tyres didn't live up to the hype? The 2011 - 2013 seasons were some of the most entertaining F1 seasons of recent years with a massive upsurge in overtaking*. The tyres were now a relevant part of strategy since drivers who pushed the tyres too hard had to pit more often. *yes I know DRS played its part but the overtaking dropped in 2014 and 2015 when they made the tyres more durable.

I guess tyres are complicated, but it is unbelievable how a key performance component like that can be left to hold back the performance of F1 cars (and F1 racing) for so long. All everyone has ever wanted to see is a flat-out fight, yet tyre saving has been dominant for such a long time.

@@valerierodger7700 I agree Valerie, it would be nice to see strategy employed whilst cars are racing at their maximum. The dull period of a race where cars are waddling around on high fuel protecting their tyres has never been a highlight, yet when everything speeds up for the last 20 laps we actually see a race. Look at Albon last weekend on the hards. He was going faster each lap as the fuel burned off. It sounds like he enjoyed it, and I can say it was a great strategy to watch. Hopefully we see more teams make use of this durable option.

Toyota needs to be up there as well. They had the biggest budget and possibly the best wind tunnel of all the teams and didn't achieve anything, besides a couple of podiums. I still can't believe they finished dead last behind MINARDI in 2002! I'd change 'BAR' to 'Jacques Villeneuve at BAR', because after he departed they showed that the team had potential, finishing 2nd in the WCC in 2004 (once Honda started to get more involved). Classic case of oversell and underachieve, starting with claiming they'd win the championship in '99 (with an underpowered engine 🤣🤣).

I still have a feeling that Renault just stopped developing the R31 car because of the sudden absence of Robert Kubica, who was scheduled to drive this car in 2011, but couldn't due to his rally accident in pre-season. So it might also be a third factor. So far we've seen two good results of the car that was basically built with intention to let Kubica drive it and who knows, maybe if he had some better results if not the accident, then maybe the Renault team would develop the car further more during the season? Just speculating, you know.

McLaren-Honda still makes me sad to think about. Senna is and always will be my favourite driver, and McLaren-Honda with that iconic Marlboro livery (specifically the MP4/5) will forever be the GOAT car for me. Complete opposite ends of the spectrum, the highest of highs, and the lowest of lows. But in the 10s I was much more a Red Bull guy than a McLaren guy, so I have to hand it to Honda for being undeniably the most improved engine supplier of the turbo hybrid era. Completely different beast in the RB16B than it was in the MP4-31

Every driver, even the ones with the most longevity (lewis, michael, alonso, kimi) start to get out of their primes when they are around 35 years old It'd be like saying "imagine if prost stayed with williams after 93"

I was wondering when the obsession with tyre deg in F1 started. Well now I know. Happened at a time where I was not following F1 and I didn't remember it being so crucial watching it as a kid. Wish the FIA got rid of the Pirelli monopoly and stopped controlling tyres options so closely. They should focus their regulations to safety purposes only, and let the teams instead pick their tyres and strategies freely. Wish they at least got rid of the rule forcing teams to use 2 different types of compounds in a dry race, that just introduces artificial element to the strategy and makes it about the rules rather than the racing.

As a huge Kimi fan, Kimi's 2nd stint at Ferrari. Mediocrity almost entirely across the board until 2018. I simply couldn't believe someone who had regularly challenged for wins and podiums in the Lotus E20/E21 cars (as the dark horse almost always lurking in the background) could then almost immediately be so many tenths behind in qualifying and always finish lower down the grid than his teammates almost every single time. I just couldn't believe it. If ALO was 4th, RAI was 8th. ALO 5th, RAI 10th. VET 2nd, RAI 4th. Hardly ever did he finish ahead. And he was always .25s off in qualifying, at least. 2018 was some redemption for 2014-17, but it just wasn't enough. I'm honestly surprised he had the willpower to carry on with Alfa for three seasons beyond that.

Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger, Benetton 1996. When Michael Schumacher joined Ferrari in 1996, Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger moved the opposite way to Benetton, who with Schumacher had just recorded their first championship double the previous year (winning 11 out of the 17 races in 1995). Along with how Schumacher would do at Ferrari, there was huge interest in how Alesi and Berger, both still highly rated at the time, would perform with the reigning Constructors Champions. However, the combination didn't work and the car concept that Schumacher had worked to 9 wins the previous year didn't suit the driving styles of either of them. The result was a huge step down with the team scoring 0 wins for the first time since 1988, and worse, although more reliable than Schumacher's Ferrari, the team lost second in the championship to Ferrari and were over 100 points behind Williams. As a matter of fact, for the rest of their time in F1, Benetton would only record 3 pole positions and 1 win (Berger took pole and the win at Hockenheim in 1997, Alesi took pole at Monza in 1997 and Fisichella claimed a fortunate pole in Austria 1998, by being the last driver to set a lap time as the weather conditions, wet at first, improved and he was last to complete his fastest lap)
