I absolutely wanted the original characters to overshadow the new ones. They were the main reason why people showed up in cinemas to watch the sequels in the first place. To suggest otherwise or that no one wanted the focus to be on them is dishonest.

Of course we all did. However, having a bunch of 70+ year olds swashbuckling across the galaxy wouldn’t have made any sense. They needed to pass the baton. I blame Lucas. He should have made sequels 30 fucking years ago. Then focused on making his terrible prequels.

TFA could have been great and delievered to the OG fans. I would have started with the OG cast on the Falcon trying to rescue Ben from Snoke and bring him back from the darkside. Along the way they stop on Jakku for supplies and Luke senses something in Rey. Rey being a scavenger agrees to leave with them and join the adventure. Meanwhile Poe is on a secret mission against the first order and encounters Finn who is having doubts about being a stormtrooper. Soon Phasma captures Poe, but Finn knocks her out and save Poe and they escape together. In the second act The Heroes all rendezvous together, Rey meets Poe and Finn. Then they all learn about StarKiller Base. Fin Says I know how to stop it. So he leaves with Han, Chewie and Poe. Meanwhile Luke and Rey are off to face Snoke and Kylo. Rey is still extrely raw in this episode as we are just learning about her force abilities. The final act are the two big fights silmutaneously, but in my ending the first order wins. They wipe out the same planets they did in the version we got. Luke and Rey can't beat Snoke and Kylo combined YET...so Luke retreats to save Rey. It ends with the rebellion licking it wounds, but Luke begins training Rey for the next movie where she will be more powerful and form her connection with Ben. This is just my dreram version of the Force Awakens.

Already miles better than what we got … my only reservation, really, being that the start doesn’t feel like an Episode I remake; I’m not saying it does/would - and, as Lucas always envisaged, the overall story is supposed to ‘rhyme’ (so a tip of the hat to Ep 1 is more than fine …)

Exactly. I figured Luke had a plan, which is why he was out of the picture over the last 4 or so years, hatching it, through the power of the original Jedi texts and surroundings. Ironically, that was kind of JJ Abrams' plan...however, Rian Johnson asked him to not allude to it, at the end of Episode VII.

Your #5, A planned out story should be #1, and that would implicitly make your #1, let the past stay dead, irrelevant, plus your #8 too. Good story telling wouldn't rely strictly on call backs, raising the dead, etc. But because KK had no idea WTF she's doing, we're at where we are w/ the franchise as it stands. Halloween's newest trilogy suffered the same fate...it's obvious they had no idea WTF they wanted to do w/ Halloween

A good list. When they announced the Rey movie @ Celebration, I thought for sure that meant we would be getting more of Luke’s story (possibly not just in Rey’s movie but possibly the Mandoverse as well) as that seemed like a plausible part of the reason to jump back in to that story again so soon, we still have Mark. Contrasting choices Luke made in trying to rebuild the order vs what Rey does would be compelling and link the past & future. But we know next to nothing about Luke’s post RotJ yrs & what we do know is mostly contained in the comics and books which a fraction of the audience engages w/. As a kid in the 80s hearing Mark talk about George asking if he’d come back for an Obi type role after the turn of the century my mind always went to something going wrong in his reforming of the Jedi. I figured it might have something to do w/ his limited training & his reverence for the past & trying to rebuild the former glory. Then when the prequels came out it only seemed even more likely as he was so much older than when even Anakin started his training. A sequel trilogy generation would recognize him & Leia for the NEW hope they represented & take what they started and chart a new path. The end of TRoS left me w/ nothing but contempt. I was invested in Rey Nobody. Hearing KK say they have no interest in more Luke stories makes me even less interested in this film by an unknown director. Maybe they come up w/ something compelling. Adding Finn into the mix (if they can get him back) would be a first step. But they are gonna have to sell me HARD to convince me that I’m gonna care enough to bother going to the theatre. Thankfully there’s the Filoni & Dawn (if it ever gets made) movies for which they already have my $$ to invest my interest in.

I'm still not at all sure that they *_didn't_* have any understanding of what people wanted. Harrison Ford didn't necessarily want out. He thought GL should have killed Solo off back in Empire, but GL wanted the character to live so he could make more money selling toys. Ford likely agreed to do TFA on the condition that Han Solo gets the heroic death he thought should have happened in the OT.

We've definitely all reviewed the issues with the sequel trilogy, and I agree with a lot of this, but I do want to say the lack of excellent work by John Williams was not one of those issues. He sampled existing themes quite a bit, of course (I don't mind fan service - "Yoda and the Force" in "The Rise of Skywalker" made me cry... again), but I found plenty of new material to enjoy. In addition to Rey's theme, but he also created a memorable Resistance theme and while not hummable, the First Order March is solid. I also found the music during the firing of Starkiller Base to be haunting. He's still got it.

This may be somewhat of a hot take but I really wanted two things: more prequel love or at least acknowledgment, and a more realized political landscape. I’m not saying to show full Senate scenes like what we got before, but maybe expanding the story a bit, taking us to other planets and maybe learning how they feel about the state of the galaxy. One thing I didn’t like about this trilogy (and tbh the original trilogy too) is that the stories always felt isolated and we were just seeing one small sliver of a galactic scale conflict. At least in the prequels and Clone Wars we actually got to see how the events were impacting the rest of the galaxy. Maybe at least let us spend SOME time with the New Republic before it was destroyed

At least its nice at the beginning that you siad that there was alot of good stuff as well. I do actually have some information about the films. For example the original script writer was trying to figure out how Kylo Ren could be a worthy sucessor to Vader and though it probably pained him, he couldn't see any other way the patrasicde. This goes to show you that sometimes to progress a story arc some tough choices have to be made.

People who complain about Kylo killing Han are morons. I knew going into the theater than Han was going to die, because that was the only way Harrison Ford would have agreed to return to the role. Granted, I didn't know HOW he was going to die, but I did not expect him to survive the movie. Aside from the real-world influences, it did elevate the story and was very on-brand for Star Wars. It's good storytelling.

Do you really believe that Star Wars fans are eagerly waiting to find out what Rey will do next? She's already perfect- how do you beat that? By becoming more human, making mistakes, learning from more experienced mentors? Nah. Just more of the same Mary Sue nonsense that has doomed the character. What is so frustrating is when Rey finds herself in an interesting situation, as in the cave of duplicates, suddenly, cut away and move in a new direction. The training of Rey by Luke could have been an exchange, where she gets wisdom, and Luke re-ignites his belief in his own destiny. So many lost opportunities. But then again, we did get Finn becoming the butt of jokes, and Rose doing whatever she did.

Although I do find thngs to like in all three sequels I do agree completely with #5 and 6 on this list. The whole sequel trilogy should have been planned out in advance, and definetely Han, Luke and Leia should have been all together at least once before Han's death in the Force Awakens. I agree with most of the other elements too to various degrees. Outside of Rey's theme I can't remember any other new sequel theme that caught my ear, and that's strange coming from John Williams. Finn should have been used better, yeah, and Palps shouldn't have been brought back in Rise when they already had a decent villian in Snoke. I still like the sequels in general, but they could have been so much more. Too much wasted potential left unused or unrealized. What a shame.

A lot to love about the Sequel Trilogy? The Force awakens was so awful it put me off wanting to see Episode VIII and IX ! . . . . . Yes I agree a lot of the topics on this list were wanted but we didn't get them. Instead We got Episode VII "Return of a New hope" , Episode VIII "The Least Jedi" and Episode IX "The Rise of Disney" - I'm not a vindictive, violent , malevolent Person but Disney, Abrams and Johnson should be sent to the Spice mines of Kessel for what they did to such a beloved Franchise. I play the Star Wars Role Playing game and have made up better stories for adventures while being tired and drunk. If they wanted decent, original source material, they'd have been better off buying the rights to the Dark Horse graphic novel series - At least that way they could have explained how "Palpatine Survived" All in all, a coherent story (#5) was all we really needed to make things a bit better.

One theory I have about Finn is the original idea was for him to be a jedi but Kennedy changed it feeling the CCP would not release the film in China since the CCP spreads propoganda.about blacks in China and allows its citizens to say what ever they no matter what the product is (Google the television programs that are made) Finn being a Jedi on makes more narrative sense

Luke was fine in episode 8. People change after decades and experience things that can make them bitter and less optimistic. It wasn't like these movies took place directly after Return of the Jedi. I was a lot like Luke in my early years. Now I'm dealing with stage 4 cancer. He of course isn't but the darkness in his nephew scared him. And there is a scene in Return of the Jedi where he was going to kill Vader when he revealed knowing about Leia. The Rise of Skywalker was a mess of trying to satisfy the fans by reading comments and incorporating them into the script. JJ should not have been allowed to do the last one.

I wish movies would stick to the OG characters. If they're going to kill anyone off, please let it be the new characters. Killing Luke after ruining his character is just annoying. They should've killed Rey, Finn, Po, Rose, or Kylo before they killed Luke, Han, or Leia.

I'm O.K. with the Jedi going away. They failed. Luke tried to bring them back and they failed again. Ray should try for something new. Something without the Jedi's baggage Again, I'm O.K. with the big three not meeting. They're in a really bad place and that shows us how bad a place it is. Everything else I agree with. Boyega was not used well. They kept changing direction and why the hell is Palpatine back? And why does he hate the galaxy so?

What I wanted from the Sequel Trilogy but didn't get? Solid character development for the new characters (or at least characters with fully fleshed out personalities). Sadly, only one of the new characters ended up being anything more than a one-dimensional cliche, and that character was sorely under-utilized.

Honestly I put the blame for the sequel trilogy mess squarely on Rian Johnson's shoulders. People complain that TFA relied too heavily on nostalgia, and was a rehashing of ANH. But, for the most part, that is exactly what the fans wanted. Perception didn't really change until TLJ. Rian very clearly went rogue, and just did whatever the hell he wanted regardless of the effect on the overarching narrative of the universe and the characters who inhabit it. I very much suspect that Colin Trevorrow exited his role as director of ep.9 because he couldnt see what the hell he was supposed to do with the dumpster fire RJ left for him. I don't think it was ever the plan for JJ Abrams to bring back Palpatine, but I also don't think he had much of a choice. RJ had set the stage for the weird Rey/Kylo connection so clearly Kylo had to have a redemption arc. That left JJ needing a big bad for RoS. That movie, while not great by any means, was as good as we could have hoped for given the circumstances.

@@alexhenderson1312 I agree that the biggest criticism I had is the lack of consistency between the films. Say what you want about George Lucas, but he was involved in the planning all six of his Star Wars movies. Even when he had other directors (like Irvin Kerschner and Richard Marquand), Lucas wrote all the stories and pieced them together. There are criticisms of Lucas' SW films (especially the prequels) but one criticism most SW fans can't make is that there was no direction of where the story was headed. You may not like the journey to get there, but the films, watched in order, at least head somewhere. JJ Abrams wasn't even on set when Johnson did his film. There was no firm vision. They should have signed Abrams for all three. Now, I heard that they originally had a different director for each film, but the one for the last film got fired, and Abrams was given the last one as well. Anyway, they should have had one consistent visionary to have all three films follow a consistent story. But you all wanted Lucas to stop doing it. Maybe a few are reassessing that.

I don't get the criticism of Palpatine coming back. Firstly, it isn't even an original idea. Some of the comics and other media had a Clone Palpatine in them. So it is only copying that. I never heard any of you complaining about the comics doing it. Also, any chance to see Ian McDiarmid in the role. He makes a great Emporer.

How about just making sense?? The handling of the Luke Skywalker character was so outrageous that it's really beyond explanation. It is akin to some idiot having made a movie in which John Wayne appeared as an annoying and whining character who felt sorry for himself. It would never have been tolerated and Wayne himself would never have appeared in such a film.

I guess props for finally criticizing it more than just calling it “divisive” but can we stop acting like it wa the one good movie? They all had issues, and while pretty, the holdo maneuver is not something to praise and if that’s all it takes to make a great space battle after 2 hours of boring chase… do you see how it sounds biased when you guys talk about the trilogies individual movies?

It would have been great if they created an intelligent, cohesive storyline. Episode 8 was the best of the 3 because Rian Johnson actually tried to tell a story. But it ultimately fell apart because abrams was so lazy, he copied someone else's work, and then decided story didn't matter and turned the empire into a typical disney villain. Frankly, abrams should stick to his medocare movie making, and people should stop blowing smoke up his ass. His ego is too big for such a disappointing director

Episode 8 was great! I clearly remember thinking to myself 'I bet this is what it felt like to watch Star Wars for the first time in 1977'. It was so new, so fresh. And on another note, between this and the Star Trek reboots, it's clear that JJ Abrams is criminally overrated
