I began to type this while watching your video bc I wanted to bring up a fact that is very rarely discussed, the destruction of Burkittsville, and was shocked when you starting talking about it. You deserve recognition for bringing this up and earned my respect as well. I live very close to that town, and have relatives that lived there 70+ years. What was done to that town was reprehensible. This wasn't a case of excited fans that maybe went to far. This was completely pointless vandalism destroying a town for no reason at all. Yes, some did steal, including the sign you mentioned that was over 200 years old, but considering Burkittsville is smaller than some Walmarts there wasn't much to steal meaning 90% of the awful behavior was done without any possible benefits or expectations of souvenirs to loot. In short, it was several years of assholes terrorizing a population where the average local is old enough to have great grandchildren. Seriously, it's a town of grandmas and granddad's, and it takes a special kind of dick to willfully accost senior citizens. Sorry to rant, kudos to you and your channel. The 3 min you spent talking about it was 2 1/2 minutes more than everyone else combined. You've earned a new fan!

In regards to “the witch” seen in the sequel, Blair Witch: The creature glimpsed in that movie may or may not have been intended to be the Blair Witch, but I believe the creature was simply the physical manifestation of the curse placed on the woods by Ellie Kedward, who was tied to a tree and left for dead in the winter by the townspeople of Blair. She’s dead, but cursed the town, the people and the woods. She still haunts the woods and works her will, but that creature was a manifestation of the curse, not the witch herself. That’s my opinion. Not that it matters, because, as Minty observed, that movie sucked!

This movie is golden, my absolute favourite horror film, still scares me to this day. Because it feels so genuine, so real, the acting was amazing and they did everything right. Really, the way I see it, if I were in their shoes - lost in the woods with no way out, I'd freakin poo my pants. I"d much prefer a more "subtle" movie like this one then say "Saw". I can't stand unnecessary torture/gore flicks, it's too much for me. I'd rather watch a movie that's less demented and can scare me without having to go one mile too far. However, I'm not surprised that some people didn't find it scary at all. These people have probably seen wayyyyyy too much in terms of horror films and NEED messed up stuff like Saw and The Human Centipede to get any sort of thrill...

The mockumentary was extremely well done and told the background story of the witch and what "they know" about these kids. Once I watched the actual movie, I was so terrified that I couldn't sleep for days and kept crying for these people every night. I actually believed the mockumentary about the mockumentary that said these people were actually really missing... About the interview, that's "The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn" on CBS. It aired at 11:30 pm. Some people probably watch it, but most people didn't usually stay up that late watching TV. The Appalachian Trail runs along the ridge above the town of Burkittsville. I've hiked both directions, north and south, from the point where the village road crosses the trail. To the south is Harper's Ferry, of John Brown's murderous raid. To the north, an abandoned fire tower at 6 miles and nothing else. Go off the trail and the levelness becomes the steep sides of the ridge as the woods grow thick. A few feet into the woods you will lose sight of the trail. Unlike the movie, there are no streams to follow out. The sides of the ridge fold into themselves and if you venture too far down, the steepness cannot be traversed. There are dead ends and switchbacks. Hours of effort can result in no progress in any direction. On the east side, the sun sets mid-afternoon, on the west, the next ridge over casts early shadows, so the woods are almost always dark. If you're out past sunset, there is little flat ground for a tent or even a sleeping bag. A sense of isolation permeates the dark woods. When I see other hikers, I always urge them never to stray off the trail in this part of Maryland. If you lose your bearings, you will struggle ever to make your way out.

I was around 19 when this came out. It was probably the first viral video on the internet. They had websites. Hid the actors. And made it seem like it was real. Which gave the movie even that much more appeal when it came out. I personally love the movie. It's sad we'll probably never have that kind of feeling for a movie like this ever again as the found footage market was so saturated over the last 20 years since.

Even if you know it's not real it still works when you still remember the buzz when it came out and feel it linger while you watch the movie. This is basically how i felt when i watched it for the first time when it came on TV for the first time. Awesome, Heather is so amazing. You can tell her she was really outstanding in the miniseries "Taken" :) Too bad i'm not on FB anymore. lol Would have probably friended here there too.

I remember when this movie came out, there were many that really thought it was real. It looked real because it was shot with a camcorder instead of professional filming equipment. It was set up and promoted that well. Some might think that it is a ridiculous story, but it was pure genius. It made so much money and it cost less than an average house all together.

I still remember my sister telling me this movie made it so she’ll never go in the woods again. I still love the simplicity of this movie and the mystery, but I just can’t with the sequels especially the recent one.

Yeah it surely better than the fake grittiness of todays mockumentaries. Loved the look of the artificially aged Video8 and underexposed 16mm black and white stock. Today it would have been done all with digital video and some video effects... but with this film they just went with the real deal. And that really is part of the appeal.

One of my all-time favorite horror films. I read every single page on the old Blair Witch website when I was a teenager when I was in high school. It was awesome. What those poor actors went through physically and psychologically was painful and inhumane. They all deserve awards for that, alone. GREAT CHOICE OF MUSIC for this video, btw. So much late 90s nostalgia.

In germany the movie was shown straight on free tv instead of cinemas, but we still got the "news" that made the whole thing look real. Honestly, I would argue that the "thinking it's real" thing is the onlything making this movie actually scary. Still I love what evolved from it. Have you ever seen Troll Hunter? Great found footage movie.

Heather Donahue regretted using her real name in the film, as that made it harder for her to find roles afterwards. She eventually retired from acting altogether and later changed her name to Rei Hance.

I remember seeing the mockumentary (thinking it was a real documentary) on TV. It was just a coincidence I saw this movie in the theatre. My girlfriend and I had won a free movie pass to see The Astronauts Wife. They had some technical problems showing that so they showed us The Blair Witch Project instead. I bought into it hook, line and sinker and it was probably one of the scariest movies I'd seen mainly due to the seemingly real, psychological reactions of the 3 actors as the movie unfolded. Great video about this. Thanks!
