Candyman (Tony Todd) is the perfect example of how a horror slasher should act, being both romantic and terrifying.
@fynnthefox90783 жыл бұрын
Well, it's one way to do it. Michael Myers isn't like that, and he's still a great and terrifying slasher.
@the13throse3 жыл бұрын
I think that's rather what makes him stand out among other slashers like Jason, Freddy, Michael, etc; the fact that he's neither silent nor constantly dropping silly quips, as it seems like those are the only two ways a slasher can act. the film itself being much more psychological and making you think a lot more than most other slasher flicks would also helps it stand out and gives it a unique identity. Candyman is a slasher in a league all his own. I enjoy plenty of other slasher villains, but none of them could ever pull off what Candyman was able to do.

Candyman's primary inspiration is not the short story but the real life murder of Ruthie Mae McCoy in 1987, a black elderly lady who lived in the Cabrini-Green housing projects and was murdered there when a robber in the adjacent unit forced their way through her bathroom medicine cabinet/mirror (the apartments in Cabrini-Green were linked together with an opening behind the large bathroom medicine cabinet/mirror, which the robbers pushed through to rob many apartments that way in the 80s). When she called police to tell them somebody was forcing their way through her Bathroom mirror, the 911 operators, not exactly understanding her, thought she was crazy and "hallucinating". This factoid also inspired the hallucinatory, almost surreal nature of Candyman in the movie, and of course his originating through the mirror. Virginia Madsen's main character also meets someone in the Cabrini-Green projects named Anne Marie McCoy, clearly another nod. A recent viral Tik-Tok video also showed openings and secret passages behind bathroom mirrors in many city buildings in NYC (unrelated to the film and murder of course). Basically, they took the hook from the short story, and the aesthetic, location, and general tone from the McCoy murder. McCoy wasn't killed with a hook, she was shot to death. The hook makes better Hollywood movies.

I once had a dream where Freddy Krueger, Jason and the Candyman were all seating at what appeared to be a doctor’s office wait room. Freddy and Candyman were seating next to each other while Jason sat across from them. What made it funny is that Freddy and Candyman were being cordial to one another and engaging in conversation and then they both began scorning Jason saying he was an antisocial outcast who like didn’t like to socialize and interact with other people. Jason would just stare at them from across the room.

I'm from Chicago, been through Cabrini quite a bit of times, lol and Cabrini Green was worse than it's portrayed in the movie and by the actors/production crew themselves... It was a bad-bad-bad place, and if you're not from The Greenz then there's no way you're getting into the actual complex and certainly NOT the buildings without getting robbed and beat at the very least.. Look, it has it had a bad reputation for a reason, and IMO "bad" is an understatement - "bad" doesn't do it justice.. And yes, dozens and dozens of people were murdered there every year.. Also, it's not just "one building" the "Greenz" were an entire housing project so it's much bigger than portrayed in the movie, I mean the Greenz were the size of a large urban neighborhood which is exactly what it was - just an extremely dangerous one with their own police force (Chicago Housing Police/Authority) and post office.

also, here's the main one he missed. It was inspired by the short story partly, but Candyman was mainly based on the real life murder of Ruthie Mae McCoy in 1987, a black elderly lady who lived in the Cabrini-Green housing projects and was murdered there when a robber in the adjacent unit forced their way through her bathroom medicine cabinet/mirror (the apartments in Cabrini-Green were linked together with an opening behind the large bathroom medicine cabinet/mirror, which the robbers pushed through to rob many apartments that way in the 80s).

I grew up near Chicago and heard all sorts of stories about Cabrini-Green. It was the place of some actual horror story type of situations like Girl X a girl who’s identity wasn’t released for a long time because what happened was so bad. Many shootings, gang violence, drugs, and more. But at the same time many of the residents loved their neighborhood and were sad to see it demolished.

My wife and I visited Cabrini-Green with our church doing some volunteer work to get children inoculated (this was decades before the current pandemic (obviously, since Cabrini-Green is no longer). While we didn't have police escorts, we were instructed to have a "diverse" mix of individuals in our groups, if you take my meaning. It was not a pleasant place to live, but we definitely saw a very wide range family situations, from the almost anachronistically "normal" to the fear-inducingly bleak.

Tony Todd was absolutely brilliant and chilling. I love the dignity and empathy of his monstrous characterization. Very “Phantom”. Very “Hannibal” too. He made it his own and it’s truly iconic forever. My sister and I watched Candyman in the basement because our house was being painted and (at a time when most slashers were becoming comical) Candyman was a real shocker with serious themes and fantastic music that truly terrified us.

I got to hang out with both Tony Todd and Noah Hathaway as their personal assistant for an entire weekend a few years ago after they had made the movie Sushi Girl. They couldn't be more pleasant to be with. They're both so genuine and down to earth, especially with their fans. They were very gracious and didn't mind spending time with anyone who had questions or wanted autographs and/or pictures, from early morning through the late evening. It was also especially fun spending close personal one on one time with them at lunch and dinner in their hotel rooms or in restaurants. They truly love their jobs and enjoy making films that they hoped their fans would like. It was also an added bonus to find out that Noah and I share a birthday, November 13th. Even though it's been a few years since I got to spend true quality time with them neither one of them have forgotten me and to this day we still correspond with each other online and Noah has never forgotten to wish me a Happy Birthday each year. Oh, and wow is Tony Todd tall! Thank you for your amazing videos, Minty. I always get excited when I receive a notification that you've posted a new one, keep them coming!! 🥰

Philip Glass's soundtrack absolutely makes it. Thanks for your intelligent take on it. And thanks for mentioning one of the more unnerving aspects of it-- Tony Todd's Candyman is damned sexy, and yes, they do act like lovers dancing.
