I think we can all agree that the true villain of this story is Helen's smarmy husband. At least Candyman wanted a relationship. LOL!
@Japaneseanimeguy4 жыл бұрын
True. Because she was the one disproving him, killing her and having her join him makes his desire to have her special. Some random young woman won't do, it has to be Helen. Meanwhile the man who is supposed to be there for her is off screwing one of his students and starts redecorating their apartment when she was incarcerated in the mental hospital. The murderous malevolent spirit was more of a romantic and showed more appreciation than the asshole. Plus he's cultured. There's just something about a calm cultured villain. They're better than your average psychopath.

True story. My Wife Kahlie’s Dad, when she was a little girl, found out that she was afraid of the Halloween theme cause it “sounded creepy”. He then proceeded to play it randomly throughout her childhood to freak her out. So even though she’s a huge horror fan, when we met in college, she’d never seen the Carpenter classic. She’d built up such trauma over the theme music she was subconsciously certain that Halloween would be scary on a level she wouldn’t be able to handle. After many years of being in a relationship, I was able to finally convince her to give it a try. And after all that build up, there was only one review possible: “Was that it?”

I think him saying "it was always you" had a few meanings. The first would be its literal meaning, that she was the one to do the killings (she was just in a posessed state, but it was physically her doing the killings) But i think the second is a symbolic meaning, that helen was actually Caroline in a past life, and thats why candyman was so obsessed with her and doing killings with her.

Also the quintessential Clive Barker line, in that it combines excessive violence with wanky, pretentious writing that sounds deep at first, but makes less sense the longer you think about it. 7:45 The whole thing about opening up the backs of bathroom mirrors was a really interesting touch in this story. The high rises in poor areas were all built the same all across certain areas in the US. People found out if you removed the bathroom mirror / cabinet, behind it would be a cavity for pipes that led straight into the adjacent apartment. With nothing but a slide on backing stopping someone coming in. A common way for people in bad neighbourhoods to burgle houses from empty apartments into homed ones. A woman was killed this way in NYC when teens came through her bathroom wall and were caught by her, thinking the apartment was empty. They put everything back together so well on their way out through the mirror / cabinet, police had no idea how it could have happened without breaking the door down. Scary stuff.

EDIT: i’m sorry. i didn’t read the full comment. i have the tendency to read the beginning of something and jump to the end of it thinking i read the middle part :( it was directly inspired by an actual murder case of an older black woman who was killed by an intruder able to break in via the medicine cabinet. i believe she had a mental condition so her worries were dismissed until she was found dead.

@@BrooklynBeTheBoro Hmm thats acually interesting, so what was it that made candyman not terrifying for you? was it the unique storyline or was the whole concept just not scary for you?
@BrooklynBeTheBoro3 жыл бұрын
@@tallymac I'd say it was the concept. During the early 80's pretty much everyone knew the urban legend of "Bloody Mary". Supposedly if you locked yourself in the bathroom with the lights out, and repeated her name 3 or 5 times (I'm too old to remember the exact amount) into the mirror, then Bloody Mary would appear and try to kill you. Pretty much everyone I knew had done it, and nothing happened to them. So in my young mind it all amounted to little more than a stupid prank. Also, unlike other traditional monsters, Candyman wasn't an indiscriminate killer. He wasn't a mindless evil entity that killed innocents at random. The people he killed actively sought out an encounter with him or was connected to those who sought after him. All in all, it was just a good stand-alone film. I loved seeing a Black antagonist with a focus on the evils of America's past. And I also loved the fact that it was set in the projects because I grew up in the projects in Brooklyn. Horror movies didn't take place in areas like my neighborhood. They mostly took place in the woods or small rural towns.
@ColossalM3 жыл бұрын
@@tallymac I think the style of the movie lends itself to being immersively ethereal and melodramatic. Like you get so pulled in the world and atmosphere that the scariness of the Candyman just sorta works with the whole mood rather than shock you
