The first Europeans to successfully create a colony in the USA (commonly known as the Pilgrims) hated the idea of celebrating Christmas. It was one of the primary reasons they left Europe to settle in the new land. Interesting that some Americans Christians make such a big fuss about a "Merry Christmas" greeting, as opposed to "Season's Greetings" because this a Christian nation.

I found it quite funny when you started talking about St. Nicholas because, in my country we have a separate holiday for him, on 6th december. In the night between 5th and 6th of december, children get small gift such as sweets and other symbolic stuff in their shoes. And the story of St Nicholas that we were told in religion classes contains the one you mentioned, it's just that there were more people than those girls (who weren't prostitutes in the version we were told).

Marie Neely Well the thing is, most Christians are really Paulians. They don't give a hoot about scripture (unless it's convenient). Jesus died to cleanse our sins, oh here, have some bread and wine. When I do see it, mistletoe is usually growing off an oak, usually in the trees hollow, or suspended from the branches. Well, more accurately they believed it was made of multiple sentient entities, as quite a few people on this planet still do.We call them Animists, and they're not technically wrong, either. Many aspects of nature do have some level sentience, and some of them influence people's everyday lives to a greater or smaller degree. Like, there are some plants in my garden that showed up without the help of any sort of gardening. It's as if the weather just spontaneously generated them, crazy how that works. Santa Claus is based on the Dutch Sinterklaas actually. A American salesman for the Coca Cola company happened to be in Amsterdam during the festivities of the Sinterklaas holiday and asked the hotel staff about what was going on. After he was told what was going on, a holiday for children based on the Saint Nicolas idea (which on turn was actually a pegan fertility festival in origin). He liked it so much that he took it up with Coca Cola HQ of where the first changes appeared in what the current Santa Claus is. I do not know the fine details of course, but knowing the Dutch version uses a white horse and the black pete's. It is the most likely candidate for America since it kept living in the slavery and racism ideas on which they try to blame the Dutch now by taking away the very holiday that started the current Santa Claus story. Speaking about stupidity and being rude... (if not keeping in touch with the racism and slavery roots of America, yet the Dutch version is NOT based on slavery or racism since it is based on a festival more then a thousand years old, if not much older). I know it's not much info, but you could use this interpretation (sintenpietengilde.nl/Geschiedenis.html) but it is in Dutch, so a translation may be needed. I however do not know how accurate that one is. There is however a video somewhere on KZbin that actually gives a more accurate idea about what it actually is.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that the 1st mention of the Nativity story/myth didn't appear in sacred writings until sometime in the 2nd century C.E., & that surviving early Christian & Jewish writings clearly state that he was an illegitimate child who had older siblings, & whose biological father may have been named Pantera. (I'm using as reference the extensive footnotes & bibliography in the historical novel The Betrayal, by Kathleen O'Neal Gear & W. Michael Gear, set in 325 C.E. during Constantine's ruthless purge of "heretical" texts. It's a non mystical account that you might find interesting, if only for the history.)
