In all seriousness, “I don’t like sand” is actually my favorite line not just in Star Wars but in film over the past 25 years. It captures so much depth in the story of who Anakin has been and who he will be and does so in a classic Lucas way, by making you think that it’s a surface-level, throwaway line (which is part of the added beauty and mastery). The line definitely gets an added layer of depth when you realize that he’s literally talking about the very substance that he grew up on and should’ve been the very thing identified with “home” for him. And in essence, it was, but not in a good way. Sand represented all that was his upbringing on Tatooine- slavery, “very, very dangerous” sandstorms, neglect from Republic (a reason he doesn’t think “the system works”), Tusken Raiders seen as a threat to existence, and all sorts of crime and “villainy.” It’s all that he sought to get away from as a kid. It’s all that he’s come to fear more and more as he worries about what it’s done to his mother these past 10 years, haunting his nightmares… BUT IT GETS WAY DEEPER when you think about his follow-up line… “not like here, where everything is soft and smooth” (cue awkward arm stroke). In establishing 10 year-old Anakin, George Lucas made it very clear that he saw the Jedi as his answer, the solution that would one day liberate slaves and make all things right. Unfortunately, this truth is unraveled when the very Jedi seen as his liberation is instantly killed, leaving him to ask “what’ll happen to me now.” His future is again in question. His one hope was shown to be insufficient and then sends him into deeper uncertainty. But now… 10 years later, he’s found his new solution. Padme is seen by Anakin to be the new “one thing” that he can build his life around. In other words, what he’s really saying is “I hate sand, Tatooine, where I come from. But I love here, where I can build a new future and start a new identity,” which sets up the trajectory for the tragedy that occurs when he realizes she’ll die- his life, future, and hope die with her… It then GETS EVEN DEEPER when you realize that Anakin’s line isn’t just about Padme, but he says “not like HERE” and you realize that George Lucas very intentionally had one other primary character be from Tatooine as well (no, not Jar Jar). All in this one line of dialogue, George is revealing Anakin’s resentment for where he comes from, highlighting his deep need for a new source of identity and hope, displaying how that hope was initially put in the Jedi but died along with Qui-gon (and fades more and more over AotC and RotS), and foreshadowing how that hope will transition from the Jedi, to politics, from his mother to Padme, and yes, from Qui-gon ultimately to Palpatine, all of which will eventually destroy him. This line highlights the very tragedy of Star Wars and of Anakin and does so in a rather corny but extremely clever way.

To your very FIRST question, I would actually answer "Phantom Menace" was the weakest of the three. Don't get me wrong, I still love ALL of them... but Episode II is actually better than Episode I. Anakin was MEANT to be an "awkward teenager" who was taught to repress his feelings. Hayden (and I've been saying this for decades at this point) pulled that off PERFECTLY! Do any of you remember your awkward "puberty" years, or no? I do! They were quite traumatic for me, and for many of the same reasons that Anakin had. They left scars! 2:00 - My favorite line from ALL of Star Wars? Here it comes: "You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view." THAT one. Right there! It is SO central to Star Wars, it's insane!

One common complaint is the heavy use of CG and digital effects, but after watching Clone Wars several times, the CG has this odd effect of making Episode 2 the perfect Clone Wars Zero movie. It makes for a smooth transition from a live-action movie to a CG show.

I’m assuming everybody who has an issue with this particular conversationmust have absolute top-tier 10 out of 10 conversations with all of their partners at every single stage from the moment that they met them and have never once had an awkward interaction with somebody they considered to be a significant other And most importantly, as far as Yoda goes, wow we’re now making fun of peoples ticks and the language cadence of their people.
