In Canada (well at least Ontario) you have to do community service to graduate high school. I believe it's 40 or 60 hours but you can do more and get a certificate.

My friend (shes in the IB program in Ontario) has to do 250 hours! But shes aiming for 500 to get a scholarship! Its bizzare, but community hours really does help you in life (from what I've done so far). I'm going into grade 9, and have finished ALL my hours all ready, but I'm going to continue doing them, because I personally find it helps me grow better bonds with my community, and others in general! :)

another tip i have going along with the community service tip you had was to do a lot of things outside of school so that when it comes time to write your college essay you'll have a lot of memories and experiences from community service or just any activities that you participated in to help you make writing your college essay a lot easier :)

About the locker thing, I never use my locker either but I would still recommend getting one because you can put your textbooks in it and not have to carry them around. My teachers never use textbooks so I don't need them and it's great to just put them in your locker instead of at home or lugging them around. :)

For me we have to use lockers cause 1. We aren't allowed bags in class and 2. I live in Canada so no one wants to carry big heavy coats to every class and we are also required to do 40 hours of community service to be able to get our diploma I know people who haven't gotten it because of not having enough hours....

Jacqueline, we have different levels of education in high school here. Vmbo is the lowest, then comes havo, then vwo and the highest (smartest) level is gymnasium. Vmbo is 4 years of school, havo 5 and vwo and gymnasium 6. In the last year of primary school (year 8, you'll be like 12 y/o) every student takes a test. It concludes everything, like English, Dutch, Math, Geography.. Based on the results of that test they will tell you what level suits you.

Okay, So I'm going into 9th Grade, and I'm still gonna decorate my locker but I'm not gonna go super overboard. (A locker shelf or two, mirror, an organizing magnetic cup thing, and a few pictures).
