People will criticize trying to learn a language through entertainment, and say things like watching anime will make you sound like an anime character. But every single person I know who has learned English as a second language has done so through watching American films or listening to American music to the point where they sound like native speakers. Art imitates reality. It's all the same vocabulary and all the same grammar. I used to think this was crazy, but I've been sort of doing this with Japanese for the past year, and I'm actually noticing genuine improvements, even if they are slow. I will always stand by the fact that immersion is far more important than book learning.

@@Amins88 This is not a good parallel. It's alright if you search anime that is purposefully close to life and watch that for education, but a lot of what is said, and how it is said, in anime does not actually mirror everyday use of the Japanese language. I've seen a lot of people who do in fact end up talking "like anime", it's just that they don't tend to care or be exposed to their faults because they don't have much to any contact with actual Japanese native speakers who are not anime fans. Having said that, I've met a few Japanese people who spoke like anime when I lived in Japan, and it is jarring. It's like when you stumble into someone in the US that talks exactly like a rap record / country album. It sounds incredibly weird, even when it's the natives doing it, let alone a foreigner. EDIT: I'm not saying that learning anything through games or anime (or movies, or whatever) is pointless / not possible / not good. It works. Undeniably. But if you are going to use media as a support material for learning, it would be a good idea to be somewhat more methodical about it and try to spread out the sources.
@Amins88

@@ivan_osorio This is a fair point. It just takes the self-awareness to understand what is "Anime Flair" and what is common vocabulary. Also having a balanced approach by watching real conversations with real people (interviews, podcasts, etc.) helps, too.

Actually that reminds me, I would love to see you guys do a top 10 or 20 video games that are works of art. Like where the visual experience and the sound design and music and story come together to make something artistic. Gameplay wise they may not necessarily be the most amazing, but everything else comes together in an artistic. I’m thinking along the lines of Rime, Abzu and so forth. But I’d like to see what you would consider works of art. Have you guys done a video like that? There’s a ton of beautiful games out there

Oh my God, this. My little brother lives close to my mom and her husband and they give him a lot of flack for enjoying video games because they know he plays them. Last time I was over there I'm like look, you guys should chill out on fussing at him over a video game. It's no different than you guys sitting in the living room watching TV for 8 hours on your days off and spending the rest of your free time on the days you work doing the same thing. Actually, playing a game is more interactive and it keeps his brain engaged. So while you're drooling in front of a television, he's actually thinking about the actions he's taking and planning and strategizing as well as making split-second decisions that affect the success of what he's trying to do. As a matter of fact, there are studies showing that video games can improve brain decline related to age. So, come on guys just please give him a break. I love my mom but she's very old school.

I do know that there seems to be evidence supporting the base theory, just nothing that has managed to work consistently enough because it doesn't exercise the mind to a great enough extent for most people. Also, I don't think they've tested with games that were complex enough to strongly support the theory as such games were, relatively speaking, too new.

@@Amins88 Partly because I started playing it at a young age, partly because it has the 8-way run system and a solid combat system. The 8-way run makes character’s with projectiles rely less on them (spamming) because a simple side-step will almost always result in a miss. But the game’s Critical Edges are awesome. I even put up a video of characters who have multiple. I’m going to have to make a part two as I have learned that Maxi has two.

10. Well said. Like you said there's games that require plenty of reading too and reading words doesn't automatically make someone smart. Also, I would like to add too that it doesn't have to be just one or the other. If someone plays games, that doesn't meant they don't ALSO read books. People CAN have multiple hobbies, you know. 9. Yeah fair point I also think sports fans are ridiculous when they rage over their team losing. And it's worse not only because they're not doing anything, but they also can become genuinely violent towards others at times... 8. Yeah I would say if you have a sudden responsibility that comes up you should take care of it, like you said with a parent needing to help a child or something like that, but otherwise people generally shouldn't be disturbed when they're playing a game like that. 7. Yeah with that just use your judgment based on the individual circumstance, but more likely than not it isn't an accident if it involves modern games since there are typically multiple clear steps to go through to delete a save file. But yeah, with the parent thing they should just be more straightforward with it. If you're concerned about your kid playing too much instead of doing chores or homework talk to them and try to work out some other solution first. Deleting a game should really only be a last resort if nothing else works and it's truly necessary. 6. Yeah if someone wants to use a catch-all term, there is a better way to do it, just call it a console. Nintendo is a specific brand, and even within that brand the consoles are wildly different from each other. Do you mean a Game Boy? A Wii? A Switch? N64? They're all very different. Definitely more different than Coke and Pepsi. 5. Yeah whatever console(s) you choose to play, there's no need to degrade someone over picking something different. Different people like different things. And yeah, if you can have all of them more power to you, but some people can only afford one, and again that's not something you should degrade someone over. Even being able to play any of them is a first world luxury we should be grateful for. 4. Yeah if you WANT to put it on easy, you can, but no one else should be TELLING you to play it that way. It's your game, you play it how you want. 3. Yeah it definitely qualifies as art. Not all art is good, but it's still art. 2. Yeah I think that situation is similar to walking in on someone watching p o r n. It's best to just not say anything, leave and let them be. 1. Yeah, the creators of the products definitely shouldn't be treating the fans like they're stupid.

Not too long ago, my 30 year old daughter came over with her two kids unannounced (which is definitely fine, BTW, not an issue at all in our house) while I was playing COD BO 4Zombies. Now, she's been watching me play video games of all varieties all her life, and I would have thought she knew the deal, but when I didn't just stop playing right then and there, she came out with that "why can't you just pause" thing. I just laughed.

Personally had not just my reading ability helped by playing video games but also my mathematical ability with games like Fire Emblem very young when doing basic multiplication because being good at the game meant knowing the metrics behind what would take down an enemy. Nobody really gives a crap about how many bags of apples that fit 7 each it would take to fit 35. Instead, I knew it was dumb to fight this guy because I wasn't gonna hit him 5 times before he dealt my health pool of 25 with 13 damage attacks. Also primed my mind for algebra in first grade, lol.

I read books all the time and mom used to criticize me for the subjects I chose. I was annoyed on a couple of points. The first was the closest I ever saw her pick up a book was to fill in one of those crossword activity books you could get in a checkout line, so why are you judging me on my material. The second was literary works could be garbage too. I was once forced to read Hawthornes Scarlet Letter in High School and I could feel my brain cells dying as I tried to get through it; its sad that the film adaptation managed to do a better job of fleshing out the character development and plot than the actual book did. Give me my Pratchett, Koontz, and Lackey any day over drivel like that.
