From my experience making games for jams the visuals are very important, and cohesiveness in the art and design is at the top for making good visuals (The art in the video looks very nice and cohesive). Secondly I try to come up with a clear "The End" for the game at the idea stage so it doesn't feel unfinished when the jam ends. Thirdly don't be annoying.. provide a way to turn off the music, provide instructions, provide a clear goal, don't provide instructions in the form of an essay, make restarting after loosing fast and easy but not abrupt, etc. etc.

The hardest part for me is coming up with an idea in the first place
@SuperStudiosMedia Жыл бұрын
I like to look up the definition of the words to get ideas of how to interperet the theme, also don't put too much pressure on yourself to come up with a "good idea" just write down every idea you come up with even if it seems stupid. That's what works for me at least.

@@SuperStudiosMediaagreed, try exhausting the bad or not good enough ideas first, come up with as many as possible, then somehow you could find the best ones

Addition to step one, pick your team wisely, some groups are less then the sum of their parts. I recently tried to make a week long jam in a group and despite me trying to organize the group, the teaM was more or less radio silent and made nothing up unto the due date and we barely had so much a concept in place (admittedly i gave up after a few days of trying to organize the team). It was like college group projects all over again. Which is funny cause first time i did a group jam it went swiwmmingly dispite being less experianced and in only 48 hours.

yeah that's very true, I've been in that situation in pretty much every game jam I've been in with a team, usually I just carry because I'm so used to working alone. However recently I joined an in person game jam where I was on a team with people all around the same level as me and just as motivated as well. It was the best feeling I've had during game development.

Reverse the roles? How about a visual novel where you write the dialogue options and the computer selects between them! (Oh no, I've invented "writing.")

I always miss the one game jam that I know about so then I have to wait a year. Anyone have game jams to fill the wait between jams?
@SuperStudiosMedia Жыл бұрын
I usually like to do the GMTK jam, Vimjam, Ludum dare, and the Brackeys jam. There are also constantly game jams happening, if you go to the Jams tab on itch.io you'll see heaps.

Im pretty sure you cant reuse code in gamejam im pretty sure thats a rule:] Anyways nice vid!
@SuperStudiosMedia Жыл бұрын
Yeah i'm pretty sure most jams won't allow it, for example the compo in ludum dare, but most casual ones do, such as in this case for GMTK as long as it's generic stuff, like input and settings, and not stuff designed before hand specifically for the jam. They'll usually disclose that sort of stuff on their page.

Protip--if caffeine legitimately helps you get work done you probably have ADHD. Look up the effect of caffeine on dopamine receptors in people with ADHD.
@SuperStudiosMedia Жыл бұрын
That would make sense, when i first tried caffeine i went from struggling to work for even an hour, to working basically non stop. Maybe you're right, it definitely does have a HUGE effect on me personally

This is more like, "10 tips for getting at least the game finished", which if you could already do, the video isn't very helpful.
