nice one quick point for those who only have access to speedlights...in a studio setting you can always mount 2-3 speedlights together and shoot them at lower settings to freeze smoke trails just as sharply as you can with a MUCH more expensive studio strobe and still get enuff depth of field (DOF)

Have you tried lighting a candle, blowing it out and re lighting it with a match above the candle that travels down the smoke to re light the candle and do you have a photo of it?

Very nice. I haven't found that smoke moves all that fast. For water drops for example, you really need to use 16th or 32nd of a second on manual with the flash. When shooting cigar smoke without wind, I didn't find any problems using a much higher power. I put the cigar on a grill in the garage, put the flash on top of a car to the side and shot out into the darkness at night. A camera, a lens and a flash with a built-in slave on manual with a flash on the camera (on manual) pointed to the side to trigger it. No tripod, flash trigger or studio strobe needed.

Yeah, the thing is with smoke that even with slower flash durations it still looks "ok" since the smoke travels in a line and kinda wisps up. But, you don't get the same detail you would when its a faster flash duration. It's almost like getting a little bit of that water/shutter drag type effect. Still looks cool, just different.

I am always amazed at the instructions on shooting great photos and they use $8K in gear well above the average user...
@slrlounge10 жыл бұрын
The point was to get ultra high resolution smoke textures for the Smoke Texture Pack for SLR Lounge users to use. So yes, we use super high quality gear to make the best quality product we can. But, the education on how it is done can be done with any gear you like.
