It may not necessarily have been practice that they were after (well, it could've been to boast too, but that's not my point, lol) The Greeting kids (and some of us adults) may have been too nervous to think of anything to say BEYOND the default conversation-openers Perhaps like studying for a written exam...but then, when you see the test in front of you, sudden your mind goes blank and you can barely remember what your name is....and then you either figure out how to cope...or have a nervous breakdown and discretely run out of the classroom

Honestly, the tissue people scared me at first but I eventually didn't mind them. Free tissues with advertising are great in a pinch in public restrooms at train stations. The one that still sticks with me was the 84 year old man I met on the subway in Nagoya, but not in a bad way. He asked if I was an American and started speaking in English (his English was good btw). He mentioned how he had been in the Japanese army in WW2, and was grateful that the American GIs brought food with them. I damn near started crying considering we were in a city that had been bombed all to hell by the US. Oh, and at 84 he was also starting to learn French!

You forgot those in stores and shops pretending you are not there: I happened to be in several stores,...even at Yodobashi Camera, trying to ask for some information regarding some items on sale (and I was going to do it in Japanese) but the guys there were ignoring me or just moving towards potential Japanese customers. They were all freaking out, because they didn't want to deal with a foreigner speaking in English. Probably they were not feeling confident enough with their English skills. Eventually I stared at someone and said loud:"Sumimasen!"...raising my hand...and then s/he couldn't ignore me anymore. And when I talked in Japanese, they totally "melted" and paid attention to me, behaving nicely

Once I was going up an escalator in a shopping center in Tokyo, and I made eye contact with a group of girls in school uniforms going down the opposite escalator. As soon as they made eye contact with me, they stopped talking to each other, panicked and ran away. For context, I was a teenage foreigner with blonde hair wearing a big pink coat. I don't know about being in Japan outside the videos on this channel because I have never been, but when I was still learning Na'vi and teaching what I knew of the conlang, we had our own "Greeting Kids" coming in just like that all the time. I was on the floor laughing because I have been in that situation countless times. I personally like to slip in slightly different responses than people are used to hearing in stock phrases to help give just a little extra push. This just tells me I would have an absolute blast with the "Greeting Kids" if I ever visited and met any on a visit to Japan. It makes me smile seeing that excitement and energy. I love helping people learn, even if it's only to give them a opportunity to practice the basics. Little example because I feel like sharing: Most people start off saying "ngaru lu fpom srak?" ("Do you have peace/wellbeing?" or "Are you well?") but that's limiting because you can technically only respond with sran/yes or kehe/no because the word "srak" forces the phrase into a yes/no question. I like to respond with sran/kehe but then slip in something like "makto fyape?" (How (is the) riding) or "pefmawn?" (what (is the) news?) to encourage people to respond with something a little more complicated than yes/no since there's usually dictionary bots on hand to help the new people out. Something like "makto fyape" especially is more conversational, and sounds less stuffy by miles. No one wants to sound like Norm. It's like the difference between walking into a room and saying a perfectly annunciated "Good day everyone, I hope you all are well." and "Hey y'all how's it hangin'?"

I just thought it was funny and nichely relatable because it reminded of the new learners I have met, and I have also been the "greeting kid" myself.

"You the viewer" was how I first went to Japan. Without knowing anything about Japan, I just decided that I hadn't had a vacation or been anywhere before, so let's go. A 4 day 3 night package with airfare and hotel was $500, so I went. But it was a just spur of the moment thought, that led up to it. The only people I really encountered on the street were the tissue givers and once we were looking at a map and a man came up to ask (in English) if we needed help, showed us were we were going and left. I currently have an Apologizer as a student, she's a young married woman and she's very sweet but good god she's always apologizing for no apparent reason. I keep telling her that she doesn't need to do that. Also in my experience the giggler is usually always exclusively female, probably because they get away with it looking "cute" even though it's annoying as hell. Men don't get to giggle like that without people calling them out for being weird.

The starers do not just target foreigners that look different. Last time I was on a train in Japan, someone kept staring at me, but I am not even a white guy or something; I am a Mongolian who has an Asian face just like them. I didn’t know Japanese so I asked him in English “can I help you??”, and then there were even more people staring at me.

Tysm Sora Sensei for teaching us that! I think I can survive in japan after knowing how to defeat the monsters. Also as a indian accent when i speak Japanese my accent kinda matches the accent of a native Japanese speaker. Good for me ig still got a long way to master japanese tho👀btw this one was informative af gotta save and remember this for the rest of my life.
