I grew up in New Mexico and I had never seen a rat. I am sure you have some in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Los Cruces but I never saw one and never heard anyone talk about one in reality. Just as a derogatory term for a person or situation (I smell a rat, for example. Moved to Texas and had a glimpse of something running across the highway and my father said it was a rat. That was the bulk of my experience with rats until we moved to West Virginia. Smallish town by the cities listed here’s standards but rats were always trying to get in the house. Husband was always emptying rat traps that he kept on the front porch to try to keep them out. As far as I know, he did but I had NEVER seen nor heard about rats running around until this time. Spent the last 30 years in Tennessee and they have RATS! I had never seen such a thing before, in my life. How do you get rid of rats, btw? I don’t have the foggiest idea! But I certainly don’t like them. I personally think that there will be rats everywhere in the next 5-10 years. Ugh!

Chicago is legit about rats. Downtown under the L, across gas station lots, and of course the allies. When I walk my dog, they hear his collar jingling as they've learned he's a threat. You can hear them jumping into dumpsters, even running into holes in the sidewalk.

It surprised me that there were no southeastern cities on the list (no, Baltimore and DC do not count). I have to think its because our milder winters allow snakes to be active most of the year. Relatedly, nearly all southern cities have lots of green area and hiding places that snakes can live and this feed on rodents.

Not sure if it still happens or not but there's tons of old video if you look it up.

All these places lack birds of prey, they have them but not enough and large snakes that eat rats, they have snakes there but not the numbers they need. The problem lies with lack of habitat for the birds of prey and due to using poison to kill the rats when the birds of prey eat the rat they are the poisoned and when snakes are seen people kill them.
